Vandal on the loose

This guy here: 2.150.4.28.--Underlying lk (talk) 20:31, 29 March 2014 (UTC)

Warned. Let's not block IPs without warning unless it is serious/on-going vandalism. This does not seem all too bad really. John F. Lewis (talk) 20:33, 29 March 2014 (UTC)
Do we have anything like Twinkle on Wikidata, or at least an index of administrative templates like en:Wikipedia:Template messages?--Underlying lk (talk) 20:37, 29 March 2014 (UTC)
We do have User:Bene*'s userwarn.js, which is able to put a few warning templates on a user's talk page. --YMS (talk) 11:54, 2 April 2014 (UTC)
If there is some need, I can also extend the functionality of the gadget. Just post me some ideas/request. ;-) -- Bene* talk 21:38, 2 April 2014 (UTC)
@Bene*: A series of spam warnings would be pretty useful: spam is not infrequent here. --Jakob (talk) 22:40, 2 April 2014 (UTC)

Hundreds of (most likely redundant) items in zhwiki

From zhwiki hundreds of items on species were imported, that are most likely bot-generated artefacts based on a slightly different spelling:

Wikidata Terminator detects much more very similar cases. What is there to do? -- Pütz M. (talk) 00:48, 2 April 2014 (UTC)

Nothing on wikidata, I suppose. This is something that has to be sorted out on zhwiki, probably with redirects. If these items contain valid sitelinks, they are valid data items according to WD:N. ElfjeTwaalfje (talk) 02:26, 2 April 2014 (UTC)
@Pütz M., ElfjeTwaalfje: see Wikidata talk:WikiProject Taxonomy/Archive/2013/12#zh-wiki.--GZWDer (talk) 10:05, 2 April 2014 (UTC)
@GZWDer: Wikidata drowning in a flood of redundant knowledge bits, created by seemingly unstoppable machines, in a language, that a lot of the acitive users here cannot read. Kafka would have loved this. :-) -- Pütz M. (talk) 14:25, 2 April 2014 (UTC)

New Property: Swiss Football Association Club Number

Roughly two weeks ago I've suggested a new property Wikidata:Property_proposal/Organization#SFV-Vereinsnummer ... since then, there was no opposition. How to proceed now with this proposal? -- Pütz M. (talk) 17:12, 6 April 2014 (UTC)

  • I personally prefer to see at least some support (2 people other than the nominator is enough), although others may have different standards. --Jakob (talk) 17:52, 6 April 2014 (UTC)
Hum ... the number of people here interested in Swiss football is maybe not that big. But for those, who are, it would be very practical to have an identifier for all Swiss football clubs. -- Pütz M. (talk) 22:06, 6 April 2014 (UTC)
No oppose and two weeks would be good enough to me, if you can show how this property could be useful. This far you have showed that this number exists, but not how it could be used. -- Lavallen (talk) 04:44, 7 April 2014 (UTC)
Primarily it's an identifier, like the zip code or the area code for a city. Football clubs in Switzerland give this number as part of their address (e.g. http://www.fcems.ch/site/index.php/verein/stammdaten "Vereinsnummer"). I consider this a standard information, that should be kept in the items of the clubs.
Helpful it is in that way, that it help us to identify easily all items for clubs being member of Swiss Football Association.
It has a very similar function like Property:P630 (digital identifier for streets in Paris). -- Pütz M. (talk) 10:49, 7 April 2014 (UTC)
I created the property because there was sufficient support for it. See SvFF player ID (P1238). --Jakob (talk) 11:35, 7 April 2014 (UTC)
Hum ... the new property is for Sweden ... here it is about Switzerland. We are a country on our own. -- Pütz M. (talk) 12:07, 7 April 2014 (UTC)
Then   Done as Property:P1241.
And this is a football game between Switzerland and Sweden. -- Lavallen (talk) 12:38, 7 April 2014 (UTC)

Hi, I've reinstated the indefinite block for Jesmion (talkcontribslogs). He has asked to be unblocked on his talk page, can someone else please review? Thanks, ElfjeTwaalfje (talk) 17:23, 4 April 2014 (UTC)

Two items for handball players

Seems as there would be two items for handball players: Q13382416 and Q13365117. Both are target for a lot of other items. I don't know how to merge that easily. -- Pütz M. (talk) 12:17, 11 April 2014 (UTC)

Resigning

Hi folks,

It's with a heavy heart that I am currently resigning as an admin on wikidata. I have been admin since the second batch of admins (the time when they were temporarily) and have helped with the growth of Wikidata.

My opinion now however is that there are enough admins to keep the project running smoothly and my flag is not used by me that much to retain it. I want to thank everyone for the great work here and I will certainly stay, but not as an admin.

Best regards, TBloemink talk 10:13, 2 April 2014 (UTC)

Sad to see you go, wish you would have waited for the inactivity rule to kick in (or not). I have done some statistics: Wikidata had 92 sysops, you ranked #47 in number of active admin actions (as per in the last 6 months). Anyway, thanks for all you have done here! ElfjeTwaalfje (talk) 10:28, 2 April 2014 (UTC)

Some opinion

Copied from my Talk:

Hi Valter, I see that you deleted Property:P75 along with its talk page. I'm pretty sure that the talk page I added Template:ExternalUse. Please don't delete any property with ExternalUse without leaving a message in village pump in the other projects that use it, as it can damage articles in other projects. For example the taxobox in he:חתול חולות was damaged by this delete (and by the remove of other properties in Q175329 by Succu). Thanks, Eran (talk) 09:40, 14 April 2014 (UTC)

@ערן: I deleted afterwards this discussion and this request. I have checked that was orphaned, so I have deleted. If is necessary I can restore momentarily. --ValterVB (talk) 18:10, 14 April 2014 (UTC)
As I read it now it seems that there was no solution for now to use Property:P171 in Template:Taxobox (outside Wikidata) until bug 47930 is fixed. Hebrew Wikipedia use the deleted property in Taxobox, and some articles don't override the properties and just use Wikidata - this is why Wikidata is so powerful, but also very dangerous - someone from "other site" (Wikidata) can just break things mistakenly and we aren't aware to it. I added Template:ExternalUse to all the properties being used in that template a year ago, but it seems no one in the discussion was aware to it :( The problem now that it isn't sufficent to restore the property, as it was removed from all entities and it is hard to find from which. I would like to:
  • Restore this property so it will be possible to restore all the removals of related claim that are being used in Hebrew Wikipedia
  • How can we prevent future situations of such removal? is Template:ExternalUse not being checked in deletion proposals?
Thanks, Eran (talk) 00:38, 15 April 2014 (UTC)

How to manage this situasion? --ValterVB (talk) 17:48, 15 April 2014 (UTC)

The project have taken to much trust in a technology who still is missing some very very basic parts.
Maybe some botowner can help hewiki to import the content in the items who cannot be linked yet.
(By the way, I have seen both P_talks and Q_talks being deleted when the corresponding content_page have been deleted, why?)
-- Lavallen (talk) 18:07, 15 April 2014 (UTC)
  • For the general case (not this specific delete), I would like to suggest adding "checklist" so Wikidata users will be more aware to consequnces of property deletion on external sites. Maybe add in MediaWiki:Confirmdeletetext, or in Wikidata:Properties for deletion/Preload (or both) a request to validate property isn't being used externally - as marked by Template:ExternalUse. (What links here isn't enougth - it doesn't know of Lua/{{#property}} in templates in other sites)
  • For the specific missing properties - I don't see any easy possiblity to fix it, as it requires to go over past edits in Special:Contribs/Succu and find these deletions (@Succu:). I think that his edits in removal of such properties aren't helpful - please keep it until bug 47930 is fixed, and than we can use bot to remove those properties. Those claims aren't wrong or bad, but just have some redundency. thanks, Eran (talk) 21:26, 15 April 2014 (UTC)

Some facts: at this moment wikidata has 1,734,558 items (query) with taxon name (P225). 3,679 items (= 0.21 %) have a link to hewiki (query). At an early stage of our development (April 2013) Eran decided (example) to use taxon properties at hewiki. I think it's time for hewiki to activate a hopefully existing fallback solution. --Succu (talk) 22:13, 15 April 2014 (UTC)

@Succu:, you are welcome to suggest a fallback to fetch "parent of parent of parent...". Module:WBHacks doesn't work in other wikis, so we can't copy the mechnism used in Module:Taxobox. I would like to know what is the benefit of removing relevant and correct claims from articles? I showed the risks, and now it's your turn. Please stop removing claims manually this way - it breaks articles, and for no real benefit. 04:24, 16 April 2014 (UTC)
I proposed a fallback-solution above. Find a bot who can add the missing statements! -- Lavallen (talk) 05:54, 17 April 2014 (UTC)

Edit Request for filter 8

Sorry if I came to the wrong place. I am not sure where to make requests about edit filters. Please add "한국어" to filter 8. The current version of filter 8 only detects "한국말", so edits inserting "한국어" to labels/descriptions/aliases of items are not marked with "Tag: adding language as label/description/alias". Confusion of article titles - Q16354588

There has been a confusion of duplicate articles at en:Bx-tree. We have arrived at a state where item Q16354588 correctly shows links to sr:Бx-стабло and en:Bx-tree, but when in the Serbian article you click the link for "English" you are taken to the deleted title en:Bx-Tree (with upper-case "T"). I have tried deleting and re-inserting the link at Q16354588 without effect. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 19:36, 16 April 2014 (UTC)

Problem solved, I think: there was an incorrect manual interwiki link in the Serbian article. Please ignore this unless I come back having failed to fiix it. Sorry! JohnCD (talk) 20:00, 16 April 2014 (UTC)

Items for deletion

I created three lists with items for deletion: User:Pasleim/Items for deletion.

Property created without consensus

Today User:Zolo created the property coordinates of the point of view (P1259) without gathering enough support and without reaching consensus. Since the reason given ("I need it") is not a valid reason for creating a property, I demand that p1259 is deleted immediately and that the property proposal discussion is opened again until consensus is reached. Thanks.--Micru (talk) 10:50, 26 April 2014 (UTC)

Some people have lower standards for property creation than others. Some people even even create properties as long as there is no opposition after some time and it seems useful (this particular property does in fact seem useful). So, since it probably exists, it's best just to leave it alone. --Jakob (talk) 11:40, 26 April 2014 (UTC)
Then what is the point of discussing properties?--Micru (talk) 11:42, 26 April 2014 (UTC)
I will create property if:
  1. With support and no oppose in 20 days;
  2. With no support and no oppose, or >75% support in one month.

--GZWDer (talk) 12:15, 26 April 2014 (UTC)

@Micru: Zolo proposed the property March 31, where have you been since then? -- Innocent bystander (talk) (The user previously known as Lavallen) 14:57, 26 April 2014 (UTC)
@Innocent bystander: If you look at the archive it is full of properties that have been proposed and rejected because they only had support from the proposer, even if they were open for months. I do not care about this property in particular, but I do care about what is the criteria to accept a new property, because by creating this property with just one support, we (property creators) are showing a lack of respect to all other users that made a proposal and theirs was not subjected to the same treatment.--Micru (talk) 16:42, 26 April 2014 (UTC)
@Micru:. That seems to be a fair point, but I think we should rather refrain from rejecting proposals without any other justification than "lack of support" rather than refuse the creation of properties that do not have enough comments. Some properties remain ignored for two long, flooding the property proposals pages and making them hard to follow. Property creators are supposed to have a better grasp of Wikidata's structure and existing properties, I'd say they should feel free to create a property that has been proposed for several weeks without comments (regardless of who proposed it).--Zolo (talk) 17:42, 26 April 2014 (UTC)
@Zolo: I think you make a fair point too, and that we should clarify how and when properties are created to avoid proposal flooding while keeping some minimal peer reviewing. I'll open a thread on the project chat to see if we can have more clear guidelines.--Micru (talk) 17:56, 26 April 2014 (UTC)
@Micru: There are proposals and proposals. The example about Swiss football above looked very straightforward to me, as soon as the usability was visible. In other cases is it more complicated and need more review. My opinion is that it is up to the property creator to use hir judgement, when (s)he review the discussion. In my opinion is "I need it" a very valid reason to not wait to long before the property is created. I have proposed several propertys today who I think has support, but I still wait with the creation, since there is no hurry. I do not have the time to fill items with those propertys yet, and in many cases, some bugs have to be solved before they become really useful. Some are for example mainly used in lists related to Wiki Loves Monuments, and we cannot create WP-articles based on such lists yet. -- Innocent bystander (talk) (The user previously known as Lavallen) 07:16, 27 April 2014 (UTC)
@Innocent bystander: I consider this conversation closed since the guidelines are not clear enough. In your particular case I think you would benefit from some sort of batch approval of properties, but please make your comments on Wikidata:Requests for comment/Clarifying the requirements for property creation and explain your needs. --Micru (talk) 09:10, 27 April 2014 (UTC)

Well, I did find the clear spamming and blocked this spam only account. Kind regards, Lymantria (talk) 13:20, 28 April 2014 (UTC)
There are no recent edits still. The last one is from this morning and the user wasn't even warned … Vogone talk 13:22, 28 April 2014 (UTC)
I did not see any constructive intentions, just plain spamming. And a couple of hours ago is not like ancient history. Lymantria (talk) 14:24, 28 April 2014 (UTC)
But it is sufficient in order to assume the spamming has stopped and I asked the reporting user to return in case they proceed with it. There is no point in blocking inactive accounts (meaning accounts under which currently no harmful edits are performed) which could possibly be human-controlled. Vogone talk 14:35, 28 April 2014 (UTC)
The edits were the very same sort of massively SEO-optimized product promotion spam spambots typically put on wiki pages. No matter if this really might be a human account, it's completely unrealistic to expect productive edits from it, with the chance of more spam coming being relatively high (most spam accounts do one edit only, this one already proved it doesn't). This is not a company owner or website owner who confuses Wikidata with the yellow pages or a link directory, this is someone who wants to spam. No need to wait and see if he does his next approach with the same account and we'll notice it again. --YMS (talk) 15:03, 28 April 2014 (UTC)

Collapsible

Is the Template:Collapsible list necessary or can it be deleted? --Fomafix (talk) 09:51, 18 April 2014 (UTC)

I'd be inclined to keep it just in-case it is ever used. It isn't doing much harm simply existing. Ajraddatz (talk) 16:55, 22 April 2014 (UTC)
It requires JavaScript code in MediaWiki:Common.js which is deprecated since two and a half years (mw:Manual:Collapsible elements). --Fomafix (talk) 18:53, 22 April 2014 (UTC)

The implementation in MediaWiki:Common.js breaks when gerrit:110680 is deployed with MediaWiki 1.24wmf2 on Tuesday, 29 April 2014 because the messages hidetoc and showtoc are not loaded on every page. Either the implementation get repaired or the already deprecated implementation gets removed. The Template:Collapsible list and other templates like Template:Collapse should switch from the deprecated collapsible to mw-collapsible or should deleted. --Fomafix (talk) 16:02, 26 April 2014 (UTC)
