Mix-n-match best practice

Connecting external sources with Wikidata using mix-n-match has become a new echo system and together with the new gadget mixnmatch_gadget.js its get even more useful. I guess

1. there are some best practices to get better hit rate?
2. the concept of synchronize?
3. how to set it up to auto crawl?!?!
4. how do you add new entries after the initial load to mix-n-match ....
5. what to do with a source were not every item should be an entry on Wikidata?
6. ?!?!?

Quality rank external sources

1. One way of adding trust to a fact is to add an external source
2. Wikidata now has +950 properties for people (instance of Wikidata property for authority control for people (Q19595382)) link list
3. many of those properties are exposed in Wikipedia ==> if we prove a fact with an external source we also need to explain how good/bad the quality of the source is for the reader

Suggestion: Start a discussion of how to rank external sources compare how articles get badges

I can see that the quality depends of:

1. If the published source has a quality process
2. If specialists in the field agree of its quality
3. If they have a proven record of delivering quality
4. If they reference primary sources and have an analyze....
5. ....

Wikidata in education

Wikidata can be a valuable tool in education. From learning how databases are built to making queries and from there to Histropedia, maps, timelines, bubble charts... Online wiki universities in South Africa and ... for free online best STEM CC-4 OpenCourseWare degrees

Seeking volunteers in South Africa to facilitate a workshop at Wikimania about developing online wiki universities in South Africa and in each of all African countries for free online best STEM CC-4 MIT OpenCourseWare degrees in official/main languages, and wiki schools for open teaching and learning, in each of all of Africa's languages. This would occur via "South Africa World University and School" here - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/South_Africa (and other African countries accessible from here -https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Nation_States). Languages are/will be accessible from here - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Languages - in each of all African languages. World Univ. and Sch. - worlduniversityandschool.org - donated itself to Wikidata/Wikibase in 2015 for co-development, and got a new WUaS Miraheze Mediawiki last year in these regards too. (I won't be able to attend due to lack of finances). Multiple creative educational wiki opportunities involved with this project. WUaS is planning to offer online MIT OpenCourseWare-centric Bachelor, Ph.D., Law, International Baccalaureate high school, and online Medical degrees, with online teaching hospitals for clinical care - again with Wikidata/Wikibase structured knowledge database - and in each of all African countries' official main languages. “Bridging knowledge gaps, the *ubuntu* way forward.” If someone would like to submit a workshop proposal please let me know at info@worlduniversityandschool.org, and I'll help co-develop this remotely. How to organize a Wikidata workshop? (discussion)

Exchanging tips about how to organize, prepare and run a workshop dedicated to Wikidata or the related tools. This session would be moderated by Lea Lacroix (WMDE) and Jens Ohlig (WMDE), who are working on a training plan for volunteers, and would love to hear feedback about experienced trainers, or people who would like to start. Demonstration of Lexicographical Data on Wikidata (talk)

At that time, the first version of Wikidata:Lexicographical data will be deployed and people will already have included data in there. It could be a good opportunity to show how it is now possible to model language in Wikidata.

@Lydia Pintscher (WMDE): Yes, of course. However, please keep in mind that many lexicographical data exist now in Wikidata. Personally, I am implementing my data about plants, animals, fruits and names of languages in Tunisian Arabic as labels to currently existing Wikidata entities. Wikidata-enabled Infoboxes

Maybe a workshop, maybe a panel discussion, on how these work, what the issues are, etc. Along the same lines as the session at Wikidatacon, but maybe with additional viewpoints. I think that a hands-on approach would be the most interesting one. No more words, let's do it! We have different approaches, but the catalan-basque way and you way could be both done in a two hour workshop with different users. Zooming in on Africa-related research: Wikidata-based scholarly profiles of people, papers, places, topics and more

Submission 243: African research is underrepresented in many disciplinary and international contexts, and even research about Africa-related topics is often given more prominence when performed or reported from outside of Africa. These imbalances have a range of causes, and the scope of this submission is to highlight how WikiCite-driven efforts to catalog references in Wikidata can help in identifying and visualizing such gaps, communicating about them and supporting efforts to eventually address them.

Scholia is a Wikidata-based website hosted on Wikimedia Labs that displays information about scholarly publications: https://tools.wmflabs.org/scholia/ . It can zoom in on the associated authors, journals, topics, organizations, events, locations and other related information and present it in a way that facilitates the appreciation and quality control of what is in Wikidata as well as an exploration of what is missing or only covered with large gaps.

Many of the gaps that can be highlighted this way have a strong link to Africa. This session will be consciously biased towards people, papers, places, topics and more in African contexts, with an eye on applicability in other underrepresented regions. After an introductory overview of Africa-related research indexed in Wikidata with an emphasis on medicine and biodiversity, session participants will be invited to use Scholia to assess the quality, topicality and comprehensiveness of Africa-related research topics in their areas of expertise, to document gaps and to develop ideas for systemic improvements based on public domain data sources.

Gaps in the Wikimania 2018 program

Submission 244: This session is dedicated to addressing gaps in the Wikimania 2018 program that become apparent once the rest of the program has been defined. It also opens a way to handle "late breaking" topics, i.e. issues whose importance has risen sharply between the dates of the submission deadline and the dates of the conference.

Gaps in the program may arise for a multitude of reasons, often in combination. For instance, they mirror gaps and biases in the Wikimedia community, in the submission process, in those that can afford in-person participation, in visa regulations pertaining to a trip to South Africa, or in events that occur before or after the submission deadline.

To the extent possible, the session will take into account the "non-public information to help improve the diversity of the conference presentations" that the conference organizers have gathered from submitters.

Integrating Wikidata and curricula

Submission 250: Wikidata is an open educational resource of growing importance but neither has it found its way into many curricula, nor has curriculum-related information found its way into Wikidata at scale. In this session, we want to explore both of these avenues for interaction between the two.

On the one hand, we will thus consider which options there are to enrich curricula with Wikidata-related activities. We will outline three main approaches to this and provide examples of attempts to implement them: - adding a Wikidata component to existing courses that involve some Wikipedia or other Wikimedia activity - building a largely Wikidata-based curriculum for data-centric fields like data science - building generic Wikidata-based modules that can be inserted into coursework on a broad range of subjects with minimal customization.

In addition, we will explore how the indexing of curricula, syllabi and related information in Wikidata or Wikidata-federated Wikibase instances can be used to help instructors, students, administrators and others find information related to courses or curricula in their fields of interests.

While the focus of the session will be on tertiary education, perspectives from other educational contexts (e.g. secondary education, continuing professional development, or language training) will be included as well.

LexData for different languages: check how to model your language in Wikidata (workshop)

The first version of Wikidata:Lexicographical data will be deployed in April, and people will already have included data in there. The data model has been designed to be very flexible and the community will have a lot of space to organize statements to describe words and phrases as good as possible. The development team would be very interested to discuss with people speaking different languages, about the specificities of there languages, and how to model them in Wikidata.

The Structured Commons team thinks has proposed several Wikimania sessions about Structured Data on Commons.

• A more presentation-like session that introduces the project, with examples of (knowledge equity-related) GLAM case studies that we are starting to work on around that time (presentation)
• A more workshop-style session on the research we did about GLAM needs on Commons, and on how Structured Commons can/should address the needs of GLAM partners around the world (workshop)

Using Wikidata, Queries and Google spreadsheets to manage editathons and conferences effectively

I have submitted for a workshop where I intend to introduce the context of a real time data management issues in a multi-community (10+ Indian Wikipedia communities as a working example)event management such as a major editathon, contest or conference and then showcase the available tools (Google spreadsheets, Wikidata queries, Wikimedia Toolforge, Mediawiki logs and XML techniques) with a demonstration on how to set up a standard, reusable and scalable framework yielding quick and effective results for analysis, assessment and statistics.
