Don't add without sources

Rename the label to ???
editI think we should rename the label (and description) to something other, so it includes also smaller places like municipality. --Nightwish62 (talk) 20:53, 30 May 2013 (UTC)
- Good question. On the other hand, we can also leave it to Wikipedia to selected a label that works depending on the item.
- BTW there is now also a property called "twinning". -- Docu at 21:01, 30 May 2013 (UTC)
- Yeah, but I don't feel comfortable when I'm editing this property, because as long as the description only says 'towns and cities', someone could delete municipalities. That's what I fear! --Nightwish62 (talk) 20:22, 1 June 2013 (UTC)
- That can always happen. Anyways, I expanded the description. -- Docu at 19:01, 3 June 2013 (UTC)
- Having only synonyms as a description, rather than a full sentence or two is not wise and adds to more confusion. I have expanded the English description a bit more. The actual Wikpedia page that this property idea is representing is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twin_towns_and_sister_cities and takes 4 clicks to get there from the Property page! This must be improved! Can WP links be used in a Property Description ? Thadguidry (talk) 21:00, 27 September 2015 (UTC)

@Nightwish62, @Docu Hi! I edited some hundred of items. twin place was the best general / common name I could find. Regards gangLeri לערי ריינהארט (talk) 13:24, 7 June 2014 (UTC)

country (P17) should be mandatory, etc.
editHi! There are some issues:
- http://tools.wmflabs.org/wikidata-todo/autolist.html?q=claim[190] AND noclaim[17] shows 30 items. They need to be fixed.
- http://tools.wmflabs.org/wikidata-todo/autolist.html?q=claim[190] AND claim[107] a reminder link to remove/delete P107 (P107).

- Thanks for noticing! The links are broken, is there a new tool? Syced (talk) 12:41, 15 December 2021 (UTC)
"Twin city" is confusing
editMaybe I should have looked here before changing this, but let me note that "twin city" is a really confusing name. Here in the U.S., it usually refers to two cities that are adjacent to each other, like Minneapolis and Saint Paul, where I come from. So I thought there was some large city I never heard of in Brazil called "Budapest"… At least maybe use "twinned city"/"twinned town". Innotata (talk) 18:33, 11 August 2014 (UTC)
Asymmetric and unclear statuses
editIt seems, that there are some grades of twinning. Paris (Q90) only twinned city is Rome (Q220), but there are some official friendships of Paris to other cities. Berlin (Q64) lists Paris as its Partnerstadt (twin town (Q184711)). I guess, this property needs a very clear definition and guidelines. Maybe there should be properties like
- B sees A as its „sister city“
- A sees C as its „Partnerstadt“
- C have signed a pact of friendship and cooperation with A, B, D
Sometimes twinning is falling asleep. One of both had forgotten its sister, but the sister lists proudly the bad sister furthermore. But who of them are right? --Diwas (talk) 22:52, 23 January 2015 (UTC)
- Good point. I just saw that Istanbul distinguished "sister cities" and "cities with whom it has signed a cooperation treaty" [1]. However, Wikidata and Wikipedia seem be treating all of the cities listed there as "sister cities". It also seems clear that the exact content of such treaties will change over time and will possibly use different terms in different languages. Therefore it is natural that the status must be asymmetric. Suggestions:
- relax the notion of sister city to be maximally inclusive (I don't see hope to come up with a narrow definition)
- embrace asymmetry: each city should list only the sisters for which it provides own references (such as a list of sister cities on its homepage)
- use qualifiers to clarify different statuses of sister city if needed
- Regards, Markus Krötzsch (talk) 08:46, 8 June 2015 (UTC)
- I agree with MK here, that it'd be a good idea to use qualifiers for different statuses of sister city. I found the Macao government has similar distinctions. [2] It has a sister city relationship with six cities, signed a "friendship agreement" with a further two, and formed a "cultural memorandum of understanding" with another city.
- I don't know if the other terms (friendship agreement and cultural memorandum of understanding) are standard official terms. Perhaps "cooperation treaty" is the same as "friendship agreement"? I also got the impression from the webpage that "cultural memorandum of understanding" is more casual/informal, or a more mild connection, than a full sister city relationship. Macau's government does at least detail all types on a single page, so the different types are related. –84.92.129.87 14:24, 2 September 2015 (UTC)
Using Wikidata's twinning data to populate the Wikipedias
editIs there any past or ongoing project or tool to more easily maintain lists such as https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taichung#International_relations?
- Any language Wikipedia is fine.
- Ideally fully dynamic, so that any Wikidata modification impacts Wikipedia immediately.
