Wikidata:WikiProject Deprecate P642/Use cases

This page documents the recommended handling of statements using the property of (P642), which is set to be deprecated. To get involved in the larger effort to deprecate this property, see Wikidata:WikiProject Deprecate P642.

Replacing of (P642)

edit

Basic process (please read!)

edit

For any statement using of (P642), if you are not sure what to replace it with:

1. Get the parents of each part of the statement (i.e. main property, main value, and qualifier value) with these queries:

2. Search this page (using the Table of Contents on the right) for use cases matching each part of the statement, and pick the most specific. (If you can't find a match, bring your statement to the Talk page, and if you're inclined, see the guide on defining new use cases.) Assume (except where noted) that:

  • "Main value" is equal to, a subclass of, or rarely, an instance of a listed class or its subclasses. ("Exactly" means equal to only.)
  • "Qualifier value" is an instance, or sometimes a subclass, of a listed class or its subclasses.

3. Make sure the recommendation makes sense for the statement (if it doesn't, ask on the Talk page), and apply it.

When to replace with a main statement

edit

Usually, of (P642) should be replaced by another qualifier on the same statement. However, it is sometimes more appropriate to use the replacement property as a main property instead, with the same value as the original qualifier. (In fact, many properties are not allowed to qualify instance of (P31).) A qualifier should usually be replaced with a main statement when two things are true:

1. The information expressed by the qualifier applies directly to the subject item, rather than to a statement about the subject. This is often the case when the statement uses a basic membership property (i.e. instance of (P31), subclass of (P279), part of (P361), or subject has role (P2868)) (and sometimes other properties such as genre (P136)).
2. The replacement property is allowed as a main statement property (i.e., it is not constrained to the qualifier scope).

For example:

YPaso Terra (Q65093014)instance of (P31)restaurant (Q11707)of (P642)seafood (Q192935) should be replaced with two statements:
 YPaso Terra (Q65093014)instance of (P31)restaurant (Q11707), and  YPaso Terra (Q65093014)cuisine (P2012)seafood (Q192935).

If the statement has other qualifiers (especially restrictive ones) or references, these should usually be copied to the new main statement.

When to remove without replacing

edit

When a qualifier presents information that is always true of the relationship between the statement value and the qualifier value, that information should be stated on one or both of those two items, rather than as a qualifier on other items. For example:

 YThe Star-Spangled Banner (Q44696)lyricist (P676)Francis Scott Key (Q320633)of (P642)United States of America (Q30)

The fact that Key was a citizen of the United States is always true, irrespective of his authorship of the national anthem. So we would ensure that Francis Scott Key (Q320633) has the statement country of citizenship (P27)United States of America (Q30), then remove this qualifier from The Star-Spangled Banner (Q44696).

Also, if a qualifier presents information that is already presented in a main statement on the same item, it can simply be removed. For example:

history of Canada (Q2945)instance of (P31)history of a country or state (Q17544377)of (P642)Canada (Q16)
history of Canada (Q2945)facet of (P1269)Canada (Q16)

The presence of the second statement obviates the need for the qualifier on the first statement.

Caution: For some types of events, of (P642) may indicate more than one semantic role, whose values may belong to the same class. Such statements require additional interpretation of context to determine the role of each qualifier; the tables suggest possibilities.

Note 1: If the same item both causes and undergoes an occurrence and is animate, it is considered an agent; if inanimate, it is considered an object.
