Wikibase client user pages edit

Disable the "add links" link on the Wikibase client's user pages. (I'm willing to bet there's a bug somewhere or another.)

Is this bugzilla:47620? It's marked as fixed... Legoktm (talk) 09:08, 24 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Still appears at en:User:Izno for me. --Izno (talk) 17:10, 25 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I think this is a problem

The Q number is nowhere written on the page edit

Often you need or want to copy the Q number of an item (e.g. to link it somewhere else without having to type something and then select one of several suggestions, or for the merge tool, or for some discussion). The problem is: It's nowhere printed on the page, you have to copy it from the URL (which is, in some browsers, more complicated and error-prone than copy&pasting normal text).

I think this is a problem

The idea was that the user should never _need_ the Q number. It seems this is not the case though for you. Could you list the cases where you need it so we can weight it against the need to hide technical details from a large part of the users? --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 11:01, 26 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • The gadget to merge items needs the direct input of the Q number.
  • If I want to reference an item in a discussion or a deletion request, I need to paste the Q number ("Q3268239" or "Q3268239" or "Coelacanthidae (Q3268239)").
  • If I want to link one item from another, and the to-be-linked one doesn't have a label in my language, I need to enter the Q number. And if it does have a label in my language, it's still much more convenient to just paste the Q number instead of typing the label and then select the correct one from possibly a lot of suggestions. --YMS (talk) 12:12, 26 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I concur to all points. A solution who would get rid of the Q number should solve every of these points, and probably more. A part of the solution would involve a way to be able to copy/paste or drag and drop an item when you know exactly what you want to manipulate. More generally, when you already identified the concept and the item, you should not have to search it again, as a general guideline for the user interface conception (it seems also related to the item creation without label somewhere else on the page). TomT0m (talk) 12:33, 26 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think it's much of an issue, even though I usually copy-and-paste Q numbers. This because if an item has a label in a given language, to be sure that I get the right item, I start at Wikipedia and switch to Wikidata from there. This may be due to the fact that before item selection through labels was unreliable. Obviously, copying can simply be done with some javascript. --  Docu  at 06:07, 27 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

We picked this up for the next sprint so it should be done in the next weeks. For further progress reports please follow the linked bug report. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 08:36, 19 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Value field not enabled after autocompletion of property field edit

When I add a new statement to an item, I begin typing in the property name and then select one of the suggestions to have it autocompleted (I actually have to, because it's not accepted if I typed it completely, even if the name is unique and so there is only one suggestion left which is identical to my input). Then sometimes the field to enter the value appears - and sometimes it doesn't. I then have to delete a character and re-select the suggestion.

I think this is a problem

The behaviour described is the same, but I'm sure that the problem is not limited to the language property (I faced it frequently while I don't think I've ever set this property, and I know that I faced the problem for at least named after (P138)). However, I can't tell if it's in deed limited to certain properties or not. --YMS (talk) 11:02, 28 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Mouseover over input suggestions messes up input edit

If I type something in a search field (the main search field or any input field on an item), e.g. "test", the system suggests several results (e.g. "Softwaretest" and "Testosteron"). If I now (accidentally) move the mouse cursor over the "Softwaretest" and go on typing "osteron" (cause "Testosteron" was what I actually was looking for), the result of my typing will be "Softwaretestosteron". (I actually used to end up searching something like "osteron" then when clicking "search", but I couldn't reproduce this now, so maybe it's fixed. Still, what's reported is nasty.)

I think this is a problem

I don't see it fixed. The scenario described initially (Softwaretestosteron) still has the same issue. (Two hours ago, the autocompletion seemed to be gone completely, which of course solved the problem [and killed the comfort of autocompletion], but it came back soon.) --YMS (talk) 14:37, 27 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

License popup keeps appearing edit

I don't know how often I have clicked that little popup away that appears when clicking into an edit field. It then keeps away for a while, but opens up some time later. This happens on different devices and login sessions, but even on the same device in the same login session. I would like it to never open up again after I accepted it once.

Language support: Properties edit

It would be good to have a list that shows the properties that do not exist in a language starting from the highest number of uses and going down. This would make the user experience improve fastest when people add translations in this way.

I think this is an opportunity

Are you thinking like in the WikiStatistics site? --Izno (talk) 23:03, 23 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I just tried that for English. Number 1 was Pegohylemyia velutina (Q14655352) but when I check how many pages link to this I got "No pages link to Pegohylemyia velutina (Q14655352)." Tried it again for Portugese and for Irish. Got the same result - something starting with P that has no links to it. Can we get a list ordered by how many things link to an item,/property, Like GerardM suggested? Filceolaire (talk) 12:58, 26 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

add links dialogue on English Wikipedia edit

If I'm on an English wikipedia page and I want to see it's wikidata page I click on 'Edit links' and it takes me there. I often do this to get to a wikidata page when the search function will only show me lots of pages with the same label and no description or a bunch of links none of which are the one I want.

However, if the Wikipedia page has no sitelinks to other languages then when I click on 'Edit links' I am brought to an 'Add links' dialog box and if I click on the X to close this I am sent back to the wikipedia page. Ther is no way to navigate to the wikidata page.

I cannot see my contributions edit

Since I've started editing Wikidata, I have been never able to check my own contributions, always getting a "504 Gateway Time-out" answer. I really don't know if this is a problem that other users have, but this is really a "big" small annoyance to me.

Show Lable description and Link to Wikidata item on every wikipedia page edit

This Script User:Yair rand/WikidataInfo.js should become core functionality at the latest when phase 2 is really used in wikipedias, that peole can go to were the data is comming from. Also at the moment you have to install it on each wikipedia seperately.

I think this is a problem

--Saehrimnir (talk) 12:43, 26 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Comments

A similar function is now installed at most Wikipedias without the need to install an individual user script. It's a link called "Data item" in the "Tools" section of the navigation bar, and being a link it doesn't show the label, description and aliases like Yair rand's script does, but at least it's a link to the corresponding Wikidata item where you find that information. --YMS (talk) 12:53, 26 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah as YMS said a link to the data item already exists in the toolbox on every Wikipedia. I don't think adding labels, descriptions and aliases for everyone is a good idea. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 13:07, 26 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
