Fjerne beskrivelse edit

Takk for svar uansett. Mvh. --Wikijens (talk) 10:42, 26 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

beetle? edit

Hi,

Why you changed Beetle for beetle in the english Label of Q22671?

Not all the articles (or data) should be using capital letter?

Thanks, Arussom (talk) 16:15, 27 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

As far as I understand, only proper nouns start with capital letters in English. This seems to be an established practice in Wikidata (with properties as well as items). This is not done in Wikipedia because of a technical limitation, but Wikidata does not have this limitation. Note that in some languages, like German, common nouns start with capital letters too. See also Help:Label. - Soulkeeper (talk) 16:28, 27 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Coincidence? edit

Is this a coincidence that we are both doing a same genus of fish for the second time? Wikiklaas (talk) 17:11, 10 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Probably not, I'm going through genera with species that lack an English label, and I often find them in the Recent Changes list. Did I cause edit conflicts? - Soulkeeper (talk) 17:14, 10 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
Not at all! In fact I'm quite pleased with your work. Only last time when we did the same genus together, Ancistrus, I was busy merging the double items (as there was an item holding the Spanish and Catalan language links, and anotheer holding the other links) and it seemed that you also added the Danish, Nordic and Swedish labels, and it was just too much for me to also move these labels. Moving a language link is easy but moving labels of languages that are not in you babelbox is very time consuming. But for now it seems you're only adding English labels, that are easy for me to move along with the language links, so everything looks fine. Cheers, Wikiklaas (talk) 17:23, 10 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
I personally feel that labels are less important than merging duplicate items in a fairly efficient manner. It's possible to recreate most of those labels from either the language link or the taxon name property anyway. There seems to me to be many duplicates, especially among fish (but I am a hobbyist fishkeeper, thus biased). I am currently making a list of probable duplicates at User:Soulkeeper/dups. I really hope there will be an easier way to merge items soon. - Soulkeeper (talk) 17:35, 10 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
That's exactly how I feel about it. Merging items is quite cumbersome at the moment but a very necessary job to make this project work. What I don't like is undoing the work of others, so I felt awkward when I left your Scandinavian labels, my only excuse being that these were labels for items that did not jet have articles in any of the nordic languages. Items lacking English labels are of much higher necessity to fix, as this is the language most people use when editing in Wikidata. I added lots of English labels and short descriptions in the last days too. Were are making a nice team. Cheers, Wikiklaas (talk) 17:50, 10 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
I saw your list, by the way. Quite impressive but I'm sure, so far it's only the tip of the iceberg. I saw more genera of fish that showed these duplicates on nearly every species than I saw genera that hadn't. Wikiklaas (talk) 19:39, 10 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, yes the list is definitively just a fraction of what's out there. It is made by adding labels to all species within a genus, then searching for the genus name, alphabetically sorting the result, and visually spotting duplicates that occur directly underneath each other. Needless to say the method is limited; It only works on items that A) is a species or genus and B) has an English label equal to its taxon name. I don't know how big that subset is, but I'm guessing it's much less than .1% of all items. I'm only doing it this way because it seems pretty effective for now (relatively speaking; I think identifying dups is going to be a major and ongoing challenge on Wikidata), and to illustrate the need for better merge tools. ;) - Soulkeeper (talk) 19:49, 10 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

On a double side note:
  1. The above is now a gadget that can be installed. Check your preferences.
  2. Got through the dups and the dups/archive over the weekend.
  3. You should have a go at WD:RFA. I don't want to have to do all that alone again, and you seem to have clue. --Izno (talk) 14:54, 27 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
Great, well done! And thanks for the tip. I must admit I'm currently more interested in finding dups than in merging them, as long as I've got this semi-effective method of identifying them, because not spending time on merging gives me more time to find more dups! :D But I'll consider RFA if that can save us some work overall. - Soulkeeper (talk) 15:06, 27 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

An offering for our new administrator from your comrades... (our gift is better than the one at Commons or Meta)

You have your gun; now here's your badge: {{User admin}}/{{#babel:admin}} and {{Admin topicon}}. Enjoy!

Soulkeeper, congratulations! You now have the rights of administrator on Wikidata. Please take a moment to read the Wikidata:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Wikidata:Project chat and Wikidata:Administrators' noticeboard), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings, or modifications of protected pages.

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikidata-admin @ irc.freenode.net. If you need access, you can flag someone down at #wikimedia-wikidata @ irc.freenode.net. You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading, although it doesn't always completely apply here at Wikidata. You may also want to consider adding yourself to meta:Template:Wikidata/Ambassadors, and to any similar page on your home wiki if one exists. (WT:Wikidata/Wikidatans on En-WP.)

Please also add/update the languages you speak to your listing at Wikidata:List of administrators. You may also like to add your username to this list to ensure that the items you delete at RfD get marked as deleted automatically. Again, welcome to the admin corps!

Q184573 edit

When you edited item Q184573, you indicated a date of +00000001891-01-01T00:00:00Z, however Q184573 is not a taxon name. It is the brown algae, and the "date of scientific description" depends upon which of several possible names one chooses to use. If it's called the Fucophyceae, then the date is 1884, if it's called Melanophyceae, the date is 1863. Also note that the date of a scientific description is not necessarily the date the name was published. Sometimes a new name is published, with reference to a description that was published elsewhere. Finally, I'm unsure how to read your date of +00000001891-01-01T00:00:00Z correctly; does the "-01-01" refer to January 1st, or is the string of zeros at the front a code for absent month and day? In any event, a date of scientific description or of piublication can only be attached to a name, and data item Q184573 is not a particular name. --EncycloPetey (talk) 00:40, 25 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

The precision is auto (year). How this is indicated or stored in the database, I don't know. At the moment, Phaeophyceae is the only taxon name in the item. If more are added, I suppose it would make sense to attach the author information (name, year, etc.) as qualifiers to the individual taxon names. The taxon related properties, and how to use them, have not been fully figured out yet, as far as I know - Soulkeeper (talk) 10:28, 25 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Please maintain StatementSort !!! edit

Hi,

I've seen the new ordering feature : it has to be defined on a PER ITEM BASIS. Arrrghhh !

Please maintain StatementSort, and make it so that it IGNORES the order defined by this.

I don't care about what every single contributor thinks the best order is on each single item. I don't want to wait for 13 million items to be sorted. I just want properties to be sorted in an order I know and can expect to be the same on every item I open.

Thanks !

--LBE (talk) 16:07, 11 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Yes, defining order on a per-item basis does seem cumbersome. I no longer use statementSort.js myself, because I want to learn about the new functionality, but I think it works as it is right now, is that correct? Btw, I have removed the "obsolete" message. Soulkeeper (talk) 17:18, 11 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
So far, I do not see any issue. Thanks. --LBE (talk) 22:00, 11 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Acrobat is the person doing the acrobatics edit

Q11957145 shouldn't have been merged into Q193036  – The preceding unsigned comment was added by Polyglot (talk • contribs) at 00:37, 22 May 2014‎ (UTC).Reply

Thanks for notifying me. It is correct that acrobat (Q11957145) was about acrobat, not acrobatics. The item had no properties, and exactly one interwiki link, no:Akrobat, which I moved to no:Akrobatikk on nowiki. That was a better fit for acrobatics (Q193036), so I merged the items. However, I understand that the item can be considered notable as per criterion 3, and it does not seem to have any duplicates, so I have restored it now. It has no Wikipedia pages linked to it at the moment. - Soulkeeper (talk) 20:43, 22 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Merge-project requiring language skills edit

Dear Wikidatan,

Even though Wikidata phase 1 (replacing interlanguage by Wikidata) is officially finished, there are still a lot a duplicate items that should be merged. Projects to list possible duplicates (and therefore possibles mergers) have been started by users such as Pasleim with User:Pasleim/projectmerge and Ivan A. Krestinin with User:Ivan A. Krestinin/To merge. Those bot-generated lists do however contain quite some false positives and therefore still need a human eye to decide whether to merge or not.

Since you are an administrator on Wikidata with knowledge of the Norwegian languages, User:Ivan A. Krestinin/To merge/nowiki and User:Ivan A. Krestinin/To merge/nnwiki might benefit from your help. As said, it lists couples of WD items that might possibly be merged. If you are already involved in these projects or not interested, I am sincerely sorry for bothering you.

With kind regards, FakirNL (talk) 23:52, 27 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
