"Discovered by" for asteroids

I have put in User:Ysogo/asteroidi-scopritori a list to drive the population of the property "Discovered by" for some thousand asteroids. Each line in the mentioned page looks like:

  • Qasteroid - Qdiscover1 , Qdiscover2 , Qdiscover3 , Qdiscover4

where Qdiscover2,3,4 are optional.

The bot should add the property "Discovered by" to item Qasteroid and fill the property with each QdiscoverX in the line.

The source to be referenced is Q522039 (Minor Planet Center).

If info in the list should be arranged differently to facilitate the bot in reading the list, let me know (pleas put a sample line at the top of the same page) and I can regenerate the whole list. --Ysogo (talk) 20:10, 3 April 2013 (UTC)

Wow, great! I'll have my bot run through this in a few hours. The reference property to use should be "imported from" right? Legoktm (talk) 20:35, 3 April 2013 (UTC)

Bot flag for EdinBot

Hi all. I would like to request a bot flag for EdinBot (SUL). There are several projects on bswiki for mass article creations which I'm working on at the moment. One of them is generating all the NGC and IC objects (about 10-15k pages). That would require me to also add the relevant links on Wikidata to articles on bswiki. The bot is currently using the Pywikipediabot framework. If you need to know more, please let me know. Regards. -- Edinwiki (talk) 15:19, 5 April 2013 (UTC)

Asteroids in sequence

I have put in User:Ysogo/asteroidi-sequenza a list to drive the population of properties "preceded by" and "followed by" (according to IAU sequential numbering) for some thousand asteroids. Each line in the mentioned page looks like:

  • Qasteroid , Qpredecessor , Qfollower

where Qpredecessor and Qfollower may be a "-" (i.e. item not currently available).

The bot should:

  1. when Qpredecessor is not "-", add the property "preceded by" to item Qasteroid and fill the property with Qpredecessor
  2. when Qfollower is not "-"add the property "followed by" to item Qasteroid and fill the property with Qfollower

Attention point: if any Qasteroid has the property "preceded by" or "followed by" already set but with a different value, it must be overwritten because it is a mistake.

The source to be referenced is Q522039 (Minor Planet Center).

If info in the list should be arranged differently to facilitate the bot in reading the list, let me know (pleas put a sample line at the top of the same page) and I can regenerate the whole list. --Ysogo (talk) 20:32, 6 April 2013 (UTC)

Gujarati Wikipedia : description adding

I don't know exactly bots can help but I am asking for help regarding Gujarati Wikipedia. Gujarati is a state language of Gujarat state, India used by 600 million. We have only few editors on Wikidata.

Language code: gu
Redirect as alias: Yes
Remove brackets and its content in labels: No
Disambiguation Page: already added
Description:
We have 15,800 articles on villages in Gujarat state out of total 22,500+ articles. They are categorised by Category- શ્રેણી:ગુજરાતનાં ગામો (means Categories:Villages in Gujarat). Is it possible to add description in Gujarati, English, Hindi and other languages you know telling a village in Indian state of Gujarat based on their Category as almost 15800 are in same category needing same description. So શ્રેણી:ગુજરાતનાં ગામો will help identify in which article you should add description.

Create items for occupations

As suggested at Wikidata_talk:Notability#Exceptions_for_a_consistent_ontology_usage, we need new items for occupations. It would be faster if a bot could import translations from Commons:Template:Creator (which would also facilitate the mapping / importation of commons:template:Creator) and add a few properties. If anyone is interested in taking this up, I can check for already existing items and provide a clean CSV file, but that is pretty much all what my skills can do. --Zolo (talk) 19:27, 8 April 2013 (UTC)

Can be useful? User:ValterVB/Sandbox --ValterVB (talk) 19:51, 8 April 2013 (UTC)
+1, this would be great. It would be good to have a public list, everyone can use and add occupations needed. --Kolja21 (talk) 01:35, 9 April 2013 (UTC)
Very useful, thanks ! I will try to integrate all that in one file. --Zolo (talk) 07:21, 9 April 2013 (UTC)

I have copied Commons translations in a spreadsheet [2]. I made some elementary cleanup, but much remains for those willing to help (notably integrate Valter's work and Wikidata items). It may also be worth checking the translations and perhaps also add some, remove those that sound insanely specific.

I think we should also try to add the most specific subclass of available (it can be another occupation in the list). I think field of work would also make sense (a subclass can have a field of work to transmit to its instances). --Zolo (talk) 19:46, 9 April 2013 (UTC)

Bot task request

Hey there bot operators (and others too, of course).

It seems like it'd be an easy task for a bot to read the "Infobox football biography" template over on Wikipedia for the "Senior career" and "National team" fields and then use those to populate "member of sports team" (P:54). Once we get qualifiers, the bot can then copy over the years field attached to each entry as well. On the one hand, it might be a good idea to wait for us to have qualifiers before doing this, but on the other hand, there are going to be plenty of P:54s filled out already that will need qualifiers added in anyways. Thoughts? Sven Manguard Wha? 05:42, 24 March 2013 (UTC)

Hi, Legobot should be able to do this by the end of the week. Legoktm (talk) 11:14, 26 March 2013 (UTC)
My bot imported around ~50% of all the football player's templates, I'm going to try and work out a system with qualifiers now. Legoktm (talk) 08:28, 21 April 2013 (UTC)

Year and film to English description

I would like a bot to do the following:

For all items which lack an English description, see if the items links to an article on the English Wikipedia. If it does, and if the title of that article ends with "(YYYY film)", where "YYYY" are four digits, the bot should add "YYYY film" as a description. An example would be this edit. Gabbe (talk) 08:05, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

I done for all film in it.wiki, but I used Infobox "Film" and I have added "xxxx film directed by yyyy" where xxxx is the year and yyyy is the director. For en.wiki maybe is possible, but don't use the name of the page, because not all the film have year in the page name (ex: en:Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope) --ValterVB (talk) 11:30, 16 April 2013 (UTC)
I wasn't suggesting this to be done for all films, merely for a much smaller subset. I only want this done for ones which have "(YYYY film)" at the end of their articles, which indicates that the title is ambiguous. In my view, the rest can be left alone for now. Keeping last stable software version up to date

Is there a bot which keeps the last stable version of a software product up to date? How is this done on Wikipedia? --Faux (talk) 18:34, 26 March 2013 (UTC)

AFAIK it is done manually on the wikipedias and I think this could be done by hunans in future, too, because this always needs kinda review. --Bene* talk 19:20, 26 March 2013 (UTC)
I think it should be possible to find a reliable way to retrieve the current stable and unstable version for almost all well-managed software products. For example many products have automated upgrade mechanisms which only consider stable releases, or tracking the tags of SCMs could be used to determine the current development release. Of course a different source for each software product needs to be found. I think the idea is not new, I'm just wondering if this is already done or if some investigations were already done by some people who can share their research results. --Faux (talk) 21:20, 26 March 2013 (UTC)
I've requested approval for SamoaBot. --Ricordisamoa 14:31, 24 April 2013 (UTC)

Fill gaps in asteroid sequence

With my previous request above, I could only give indications about how to populate property "followed by" for asteroids already named by IAU but there are several items in wikidata of already-numbered-but-not-yet-named asteroids. This means you can not yet have a journey in wikidata along the chain from asteroid 1 (Ceres) to the last numbered asteroid: in other words, e.g., from Q152016 (asteroid 3707 Schröter) you can not reach Q152021 (asteroid 3709 Polypoites) because Q152014 (asteroid 3708) refer to an object without name given by IAU and was not considered in my previous request.

I have figured out a process to properly populate "followed by" to fill the gaps in the chain. I hope a bot can do that. First of all I have created User:Ysogo/asteroidi-senza-successore which list all wikidata items referring to a named-asteroid where the "followed by" could not be set for the reason explained above.

For each Qitem in the list the bot should do the following steps :

  • A: Access Qitem in wikidata and retrieve the link to pl.wiki (let's call it PLpage)
  • B: Access PLpage and retrieve from template Planetkanav the value of parameter następna (let's call it PLnextpage)
  • C: Identify the wikidata item of PLnextpage (let's call it Qnext)
  • D: Populate the attribute "followed by" of Qitem with Qnext (setting source=polish wikipedia)
  • E: If Qnext has the attribute "followed by" already populated

Considering that pl.wiki has a fairly large number of unnamed asteroids, this process should help for several gaps.

It is welcome if the bot can write a log for every execution of line D (please put it in User:Ysogo/asteroidi-senza-successore-log): this would facilitate future maintenance work.

I tried my best to give a clear explanation, but just let me know if you need any additional info.

If this is mission impossible for a poor bot, let me know and I'll try to figure out something else.

Note: the navigation template is also present in en.wiki; but few months ago en.wiki contributors have started deleting articles of some asteroids: this makes en.wiki less useful than pl.wiki for what we need to do here.

Thank you in adavance. --Ysogo (talk) 20:56, 9 April 2013 (UTC)

automatic labeling for highly ambiguous titles

Hi. I've been trying to label items with highly ambiguous titles like "Love", "Light", "Power" and so on. I add an English label and, when relevant, a French label (my native tongue) as well as a Spanish and a German label (which I understand sufficiently to write reasonably accurate labels). Many cases involve music albums, songs or films that share a title. For instance, even if you count only things that have their own en.wiki article, "I Love You" is the title of at least 10 films, 7 albums and 12 songs. In general the label "album by Foo" is good enough which means that the French label "album de Foo", the Spanish label "álbum de Foo" and the German label "Album von Foo" are equally good labels. Judging from infoboxes on other wikis, "álbum por Foo" is correct in Portuguese, "album av Foo" is correct in Swedish and labelling could be automated for languages where the grammar is simple enough to implement this. The same could be done for songs. I think it could be a useful task because unlabelled items with highly ambiguous title are a real nuisance for human users (and they've tripped up a number of bots). To start off this should probably be semi-automated where the bot would add the labels on a list of items produced manually. I'm willing to help on the non-technical side by verifying the grammar issues with native speakers of Portuguese, Polish, and so on. Pichpich (talk) 19:52, 22 April 2013 (UTC)

For English descriptions of railroad stations, it would be nice to add the disambiguator from en to empty descriptions too. I sometimes get stations instead of the locality. Something that can't happen at Wikipedia as they have disambiguators if they don't have "station" in the name. --  Docu  at 07:53, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

Hi there. I've spent some time recently trying to add links to Q4989245, but I think the process could be automated, thereby saving time for human editors and reducing the risk of mistakes. According to simple:Category:Noindexed_pages, that category page is added locally by the MediaWiki software itself, based on e.g. simple:MediaWiki:Noindex-category or zh-yue:MediaWiki:Noindex-category or whatever. This makes me think that it would be possible for a bot to automatically maintain Q4989245, based on the rules for how these categories are created. N.B. there do seem to be some odd ones, though, e.g. als:MediaWiki:Noindex-category. It Is Me Here t / c 14:14, 28 April 2013 (UTC)

Bot Idea

  • I am non technical person so didn't know how to write codes. So I am proposing a simple idea for description adding in multiple languages. If someone writes a code to find out repeatedly used descriptions. e.g. American footballer Than list it here. Some people knowing different languages will translate it manually here than all those translations will be added back in respective languages. I dont know how it is possible or how much helpful. Comments are welcome. Is it possible? --Nizil Shah (talk) 19:37, 28 April 2013 (UTC)
My bot is doing this for disambiguation pages. If there is a category on a wikipedia my bot can get all items and set the descriptions in every language. --Sk!d (talk) 07:22, 29 April 2013 (UTC)

Fixing Commons category property errors

The property "category on Commons" is being mass imported from wikipedias, but errors are being mass imported, too. Some errors can be easily fixed by bots - in fact, bots could also check before importing:

  • Property pointing to a redirected category on Commons (e.g. a category with {{category redirect}}). A bot should change the property to the name of the destination category.
  • Property pointing to non existent or deleted categories. At least, bots should delete the property, but they could also search a working category name from another wikipedia or check the deletion summary in Commons to find the right category.--Pere prlpz (talk) 11:24, 29 April 2013 (UTC)

Add IMDb identifier

For pages on the Russian Wikipedia that invoke the ru:Шаблон:Фильм template, add the value from the "imdb_id" parameter to Property:P345 with "tt" added in front to the corresponding item here. If the number in the "imdb_id" parameter is fewer than seven digits, pad with zeroes to the beginning (that is, "654" is interpreted as "0000654"). If the value found in the "imdb_id" is not composed solely of digits, or if there's more than seven of them, the bot should do nothing.

The bot should also limit itself to pages in the article namespace that invoke said template once and only once.

Example: From the page ru:Война и мир (фильм, 1967), add Property:P345 with value "tt0063794" to item Q845176. Gabbe (talk) 13:58, 4 April 2013 (UTC)

I was thinking of that, but actually "main type (GND)" is very controversial, maybe we should start a RFC or something similar... --Ricordisamoa 16:36, 4 April 2013 (UTC)
I would avoid adding "instance of" "film/movie" by mere virtue of the usage of these templates. Someone might have added them to a TV series, or a miniseries, or similar. There are better reasons to add "instance of" "film" (such as categorisation, etc.) Gabbe (talk) 17:27, 4 April 2013 (UTC)
