Can this patch be merged and badges be worked?--GZWDer (talk) 12:58, 29 December 2013 (UTC)

@GZWDer: Hi, see Lydia's comment:

I'd like this to either be marked as experimental or not merged until we have the JS-UI part as well. (Don't know if this is already experimental though.)

So we need to wait until there is a ui for badges. See also bugzilla:58990 Best regards, -- Bene* talk 19:55, 2 January 2014 (UTC)

Interwiki-Link

RfD archiving bot

So you can try to archive requests for deletions after being marked as done for a moment. Hazard-Bot only archive general RfD requests, but if possible, bulk deletion request can also be archived automatically.--GZWDer (talk) 05:13, 25 December 2013 (UTC)

Wikibase.net

Hallo Bene,

Ahoerstemeier (talk) 13:04, 8 January 2014 (UTC)

http://tools.wmflabs.org/bene/itemsbycat

Thank you for suggesting this tool! But looks like it creates wrong links with Wikisource pages which are not linked to Wikidata items. I think such link should point to project (not Wikidata) pages. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 03:43, 21 January 2014 (UTC)

Hi EugeneZelenko, I've fixed this problem now. The tool creates interwiki prefixes so that it can also be copied to wikitext (if necessary). -- Bene* talk 21:45, 20 February 2014 (UTC)

Hallo Bene*.

Lonely items

Hi! This tool helps me to merge more and more pages. I was wondering if it is possible to add a feature. I would like to have abillity to change links destination: Wikidata (http://wikidata.org/wiki/Q###) × project (htttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/@@@@). This would make the finding and merging process faster.

+ '&title=' + mw.util.wikiUrlencode( mw.config.get( 'wgTitle' ) )

-- Bene* talk 15:21, 4 March 2014 (UTC)

Request for feedback on my GSoC'14 proposal

Hi Bene,

I am planning to work on the project titled "Tools for mass migration of legacy translated wiki content" this summer under Google Summer of Code. I have drafted a proposal for the same over the past few weeks. This project is going to help the translation adminstrators like you in a great way, as it would completely automate the tedious manual task of preparing a page for translation and then importing the translations into the Translate extension. You can check the proposal page for detailed information on how I plan to accomplish this.

As you would be an end user of this tool, it would be great if you could go through the proposal and provide feedback/suggestions. Your feedback would definitely help me improve the proposal as well help in creating an even better tool. You can do the same on the discussion page of the proposal or reply here, whichever is convenient for you. I look forward to hearing from you! Thank you!

P.S: I need to submit the proposal to Google by March 19, 2014.

Wikidata GuidedTours

Hi Bene*, similar to above, I'm contacting you about a Wikidata proposal (for OPW not GSOC), however I'm not requesting feedback on the proposal (yet!) but wondering if you could tell me a bit more about what you had planned for the GuidedTours extension or indeed if you had anything planned (I wasn't sure if you were just in favour of enabling the extension or actually wanted to contribute/create/decide on what content to include). In either case, it seems a large undertaking (when done right, at least... I'm looking at the Wikipedia Adventure pages on background research, usability testing, and script outlines for reference) and I'd like to express my interest and desire to make it the central focus of my proposal. I've been in contact with Lydia and she would be a mentor for this project but I'm also wondering if you would be interested in also collaborating or serving as a co-mentor?

cheers, Thepwnco (talk)

Hi, actually I'm already working on a first tour and will soon publish some first results. However, some non-technical help concerning content could be quite useful to keep the tours understandable for everyone. Can you provide some more information about what the user's tasks will be then? -- Bene* talk 22:13, 13 March 2014 (UTC)
sure! I like the idea of having multiple modules and packing them all together in sequence like the Wikipedia Adventure. While I am not sure if the 'gamification' approach is the best one to take I have been considering the best way of delivery content and finding a good balance between providing information and plotting user tasks. I think the tour should feature introductory content on the purpose and aim of Wikidata (i.e. what is Wikidata all about?) and some of the policies and guidelines (like notability and exceptions when an item doesn't need to have a sitelink to one of the other sister projects), so was thinking there could be multiple choice content to assess understanding of such concepts. Other, more defined tasks would include setting language preferences; improving a random item (including choosing the best label especially when possibly ambiguous, choosing a description especially with respect to general principles of Wikidata, and how to add additional statements and sources); how to look up list of properties to determine best match; how to report an interwiki conflict; how to create a new item/check if an item already exists; and more advanced tasks just as using qualifiers, and proposing properties. I don't think we should presume users would already be familiar with wikis (such as Wikipedia) so should provide content accordingly but perhaps also allow conditional logic (if possible - not fully familiar with the Extension) that allows for experienced wiki users to skip ahead to pure Wikidata content. Ideally however, I'd like to consult with current Wikidata users as well as non-users and do some background research in order to figure it all out. These are just initial thoughts...Thepwnco (talk) 23:57, 13 March 2014 (UTC)

Dein Karten-skript und Wikipedia-World

Man sieht dann lauter Q-Nummern.

Das könnten Wappen, Einwohnerzahlen, "is instance of"-Eigenschaften sein.

--Kolossos (talk) 09:04, 21 April 2014 (UTC)

Where is the logic?

Hi! grandparent (Q167918) (a gender neutral item for grandfather (Q9238344) and grandmother (Q9235758) ) refers to Q15148950 and Q15148951 in the English and Italian description. Strange deletion

Hi Bene*, I am wondering how you came to merge Appraisal (Q15752602) into Economic appraisal (Q621696). I reverted the merge by ArjanH (talkcontribslogs) and left them a note, and I thought this item wasnt listed on RfD so I didnt do anything more about it. Indeed, it looks like it wasnt listed on RfD. (Special:WhatLinksHere/Q15752602 / Special:WhatLinksHere/Q621696) Is there some other list (an edit filter?) that you are using to delete items? Just curious. Thanks for restoring it ;-) John Vandenberg (talk) 01:48, 24 May 2014 (UTC)

You are right, I deleted all items which have been merged but forgot to exclude the ones which have been reverted inbetween. However I think this errors are now entirely fixed. --Bene* talk 07:55, 24 May 2014 (UTC)

--Bene* talk 07:52, 24 May 2014 (UTC)
Guten Morgen, Bene*.

Wikidata:Tours and Q16943273

Wikidata is not a test wiki. So I think we don't need more test items. Probably a existed sandbox Q4115189/Q13406268/Q15397819 can be used, or directly link "Start this tutorial" to testwikidata.--GZWDer (talk) 11:06, 27 May 2014 (UTC)

Wikidata:Tours - tour 1 & 2

Hey Bene*,

when you have time, please have a look at Wikidata:Tours/Project_Plan_and_Content_Outline/Statements for a draft of the first follow-up to the Wikidata basics tour. I've run this by Lydia_Pintscher_(WMDE) for initial feedback, and would welcome your comments on content too, but am specifically interested in your thoughts on the questions at the top of the page under implementation? My main worry is user experience for the tour - would it be possible to curate a testwikidata page so there are only ever a few statements on it and thus users don't have to scroll down a lot to [add] a new one? Also, if part of the tours assume that some statements will pre-exist on the testwikidata item page (for example, "let's have a look at the statement about Mount Everest for Earth"), is it possible to prevent people from changing the page (perhaps by leaving some kind of notice there)? Let me know if you'd like to discuss on IRC.

I've also created a modified script for the current Wikdiata basic tour at Wikidata:Tours/Project_Plan_and_Content_Outline/Items. The changes mostly reflect overall 'theming' of all the tours (i.e. a shift from Paris to Earth) and how the tours relate to each other. It's still a work in progress but if you have any concerns or hesitations with the proposed changes, let me know.

thanks Thepwnco (talk) 19:38, 9 June 2014 (UTC)

Hi, I'll take a more detailed look at your draft later but try to answer some questions now. Your concerns that the item might get edited or that there might be too many statements are not necessary because before a user takes the tour the whole item will be cleared and optionally some basic contents will be added to it. With Lydia I even discussed to create a new item every time a user takes the tour.
I'm really happy that you also take care of the overhaul principle - 'theming' - so that the tours get connected and make sense together. This is a very important aspect because we want ore users to stay and take as many tours as possible. This are my first answers for now, I'll answer the other questions later. --Bene* talk 05:53, 10 June 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for the update! This is all sounds good for me. I look forward to your more detailed feedback. Thepwnco (talk) 19:40, 10 June 2014 (UTC)

Hello, I just wanted to let you know that I removed the first tour from Wikidata:Tours because the Items tour I created was mostly just duplicate content of it (albeit, updated and modified so it focused on Earth, not Paris). Please let me know that this is ok—I didn't want you to feel like I was deleting your work! Thanks again for all your awesome work with the tours. -Thepwnco (talk) 18:57, 11 July 2014 (UTC)

Import of sourced statements

Hi, the lack of sources in Wikidata appears to remain very much of a concern for Wikipedianers. What your bot did a few months ago was interesting, but I have not seen anything of late, is is there still anything going on ? --Zolo (talk) 12:12, 21 July 2014 (UTC)

At the moment my bot is not importing sources any more because the data set it worked on is already finished. It will take some work to adjust the code for other lists etc. but if you have a great amount of more or less structured references in Wikipedia I can try to import them asap. -- Bene* talk 20:14, 23 July 2014 (UTC)

Badges

Hi Bene*, should badges items be specific to a language (i.e. good article badge (Q17437798) for en.wikipedia.org only) or can they be used for several languages/project (good article badge (Q17437798) = "Bon article" on fr.wikipedia.org)? Thanks. — Ayack (talk) 08:11, 29 July 2014 (UTC)

The latter one. If there is an equivalent to good article in frwiki please use the same badge. -- Bene* talk 10:53, 29 July 2014 (UTC)
OK, thanks! — Ayack (talk) 12:23, 29 July 2014 (UTC)

request - help with brainstorming Main page redesign!

hello again :) as you may know, I've been working on planning & implementation for a new Main page—for a mock-up of possible changes, see Wikidata:Portal_Redesign/draft.

You may notice that the language links have been moved from the top of the page. This is because they take up a lot of precious 'above the fold' space that probably could be better used. However, they *are* important and need to be prominent so that people understand it's a multilingual project. I was discussing with Lydia recently and she suggested you might be a good person to ask for insight and suggestions for how we could deal with this problem. One idea was to treat language links as a standard Wikimedia banner than can be collapsed by users...

I'd love to hear your thoughts! thanks in advance. -Thepwnco (talk) 17:44, 29 July 2014 (UTC)

Hi, there was the suggestion to use the translate extension on the main page like it is done for all help pages etc. Then we'd have the buig box containing all languages on the top of the page anyway. However, we also might hide the box with some css and display the languages box in another way. What do you think about just displaying the page in the language the user currently has set? Then there is no need to add a languages box anyway because ULS can do that for us. -- Bene* talk 17:58, 29 July 2014 (UTC)

user testing feedback for tours

Hello! I've summarized the feedback from three (non-Wikidata) users who agreed to run through both sets of tours for me. It can be found at Wikidata:Tours/Project_Plan_and_Content_Outline#Testing. Let me know if and how you would like us to address the feedback or if you think it's worth testing more people (IMO, it's likely that these same issues would be reported regardless of the # of people we test with) -Thepwnco (talk) 18:43, 17 July 2014 (UTC)

@Thepwnco: I have added some answers/comments to the suggestions. Maybe you have even better ideas how to improve the experience? -- Bene* talk 20:21, 23 July 2014 (UTC)
apologies for the delay in getting back to you - I have now replied to your comments under a new section of the page, Proposed Changes based on Testing feedback. Let me know if I can start on the changes not needing any technical support (i.e. updates and review of content) and your thoughts on the other suggestions. Cheers, -Thepwnco (talk) 17:30, 29 July 2014 (UTC)
Hello again - just nudging you about this to see if you've given thought to how we should proceed. -Thepwnco (talk) 16:29, 5 August 2014 (UTC)

Is there (new) consensus yet? I would be grateful if you have a link to a RFC or anything similiar for me. Thanks in advance, FDMS 21:52, 29 July 2014 (UTC)

What I found is "There are no namespace restrictions on linking items with galleries and categories." … FDMS 21:57, 29 July 2014 (UTC)

Hi FDMS4, sorry if my revert feeled offensive, I thought this rule was obviously clear consensus. However, I found Wikidata:Commons#Com:category-w:category, com:gallery-w:article which tells "  On hold Wikipedia article = Commons category". Furthermore, there was Wikidata:Requests for comment/Commons links in which this matter was discussed, too. Its outcome was, that point 1, "Direct link between article and Commons category […] fails for a lack of consensus."
Besides that your edit only creates redundant information because the commons category is already linked by a statement. Now if someone moves the category (just imagine) the information has to be fixed at two places. However, if we just have it at one place ie. the statement we still have the information and it could be easily moved to the sitelinks section if we decide that we want this but we avoid this evil redundancy. Do you understand my concerns? -- Bene* talk 09:00, 30 July 2014 (UTC)
Sad, sad :) . It's not about the information, but about the sitelinks (which get updated automatically when a page gets moved anyway). There are already (again) several Commons categories I would like to add sitelinks to, now I have to wait until there is a solution (which could be a long time, right?). Moar tours!

Hello, hello,

I am trying to finalize the remaining tours content so when I'm no longer around here full-time they can be implemented with or without me :)

I think there are two that are more or less ready to go, see:

I've included comments in the markup for actions to be done during the tour. I think the only thing that is left to be done is creating a new population statement for the fake Earth item page. Let me know if you want to work on this together at any point, have questions, or else suggestions for where we should put this content so it can be picked up and worked on by other Wikidata users who so desire.

cheers. -Thepwnco (talk) 20:12, 15 August 2014 (UTC)

Thanks Thepwnco, so how much time is left for us to work on that? I will try to implement the two tours as soon as possible in the next few days. -- Bene* talk 17:03, 18 August 2014 (UTC)
Hi Bene*, this week is officially my last working full-time with Wikidata but I'll still be contributing and around to answer questions at the end of it. I am hoping to launch the new Main page this week so I don't mind leaving the tours for now and working on the language links with you instead if that suits you too? -Thepwnco (talk) 17:18, 18 August 2014 (UTC)
We can work on what you think is more important at the moment. So if you think the main page has higher priority, lets do it. -- Bene* talk 17:41, 18 August 2014 (UTC)

Question for tools

Hello

Do you know any tools who are able to give me such results:

  • show me all entries on wikidata, what have link to pl.wiki and have 0 properties (so in wikidata we don`t know what is that)
  • show me top used qXXXX what don`t have labels (so when user come to any linked qXXX he don`t know whats that and he see only number).

Do you know anything about such tools or who would know? PMG (talk) 00:10, 16 August 2014 (UTC)

2. Terminator --Infovarius (talk) 08:26, 16 August 2014 (UTC)
Almost good :) PMG (talk) 11:32, 16 August 2014 (UTC)
This might perhaps be possible by some simple SQL queries. I'm however a bit busy at the moment so perhaps waiting for Magnus until he enables terminator for plwiki is the better option. -- Bene* talk 17:02, 18 August 2014 (UTC)

Frage zum Bot

Hallo, hab [2] gesehen.

-- Bene* talk 16:52, 18 August 2014 (UTC)

Problem with Preview gadget on wikisource links :)

Hello Bene°,

As part of the Book project, Wikisource pages are begining to be imported here, but it's impossible to quickly preview them using the gadget.

Here and example with transcluded text : La Maison Tellier (Q3210330) and here with simple plain-text page Q17357868.

If you could fix it, it would be much easier to document the properties )

Thanks, --Hsarrazin (talk) 20:57, 21 August 2014 (UTC)

in most texts, there is no display at all - on Q17357167, strangely, the preview shows only references :D --Hsarrazin (talk) 06:26, 23 August 2014 (UTC)

An important message about renaming users

Dear Bene*,

I am cross-posting this message to many places to make sure everyone who is a Wikimedia Foundation project bureaucrat receives a copy. If you are a bureaucrat on more than one wiki, you will receive this message on each wiki where you are a bureaucrat.

As you may have seen, work to perform the Wikimedia cluster-wide single-user login finalisation (SUL finalisation) is taking place. This may potentially effect your work as a local bureaucrat, so please read this message carefully.

Why is this happening? As currently stated at the global rename policy, a global account is a name linked to a single user across all Wikimedia wikis, with local accounts unified into a global collection. Previously, the only way to rename a unified user was to individually rename every local account. This was an extremely difficult and time-consuming task, both for stewards and for the users who had to initiate discussions with local bureaucrats (who perform local renames to date) on every wiki with available bureaucrats. The process took a very long time, since it's difficult to coordinate crosswiki renames among the projects and bureaucrats involved in individual projects.

The SUL finalisation will be taking place in stages, and one of the first stages will be to turn off Special:RenameUser locally. This needs to be done as soon as possible, on advice and input from Stewards and engineers for the project, so that no more accounts that are unified globally are broken by a local rename to usurp the global account name. Once this is done, the process of global name unification can begin. The date that has been chosen to turn off local renaming and shift over to entirely global renaming is 15 September 2014, or three weeks time from now. In place of local renames is a new tool, hosted on Meta, that allows for global renames on all wikis where the name is not registered will be deployed.

Your help is greatly needed during this process and going forward in the future if, as a bureaucrat, renaming users is something that you do or have an interest in participating in. The Wikimedia Stewards have set up, and are in charge of, a new community usergroup on Meta in order to share knowledge and work together on renaming accounts globally, called Global renamers. Stewards are in the process of creating documentation to help global renamers to get used to and learn more about global accounts and tools and Meta in general as well as the application format. As transparency is a valuable thing in our movement, the Stewards would like to have at least a brief public application period. If you are an experienced renamer as a local bureaucrat, the process of becoming a part of this group could take as little as 24 hours to complete. You, as a bureaucrat, should be able to apply for the global renamer right on Meta by the requests for global permissions page on 1 September, a week from now.

In the meantime please update your local page where users request renames to reflect this move to global renaming, and if there is a rename request and the user has edited more than one wiki with the name, please send them to the request page for a global rename.

Stewards greatly appreciate the trust local communities have in you and want to make this transition as easy as possible so that the two groups can start working together to ensure everyone has a unique login identity across Wikimedia projects. Completing this project will allow for long-desired universal tools like a global watchlist, global notifications and many, many more features to make work easier.

If you have any questions, comments or concerns about the SUL finalisation, read over the Help:Unified login page on Meta and leave a note on the talk page there, or on the talk page for global renamers. You can also contact me on my talk page on meta if you would like. I'm working as a bridge between Wikimedia Foundation Engineering and Product Development, Wikimedia Stewards, and you to assure that SUL finalisation goes as smoothly as possible; this is a community-driven process and I encourage you to work with the Stewards for our communities.

Thank you for your time. -- Keegan (WMF) talk 18:24, 25 August 2014 (UTC)

Lonely Items

Hi, I have noticed that the Lonely Items tool doesn't work (at least on my side). You can get to the main page but you won't get the result. Sometimes it is even difficult to get to the main page. Could you please take a look, this tool is very important? Thank you. Matěj Suchánek (talk) 12:47, 8 September 2014 (UTC)

Hi, the tool works for me. However, you can only use it for not too large wikis, otherwise it will timeout because the SQL query is not efficient enough to handle millions of pages. What do you mean with main page? The form of the tool without any data should work fine. -- Bene* talk 13:38, 8 September 2014 (UTC)
The main page is [3] (no query in URL). There are no problems now. I want to get some items for cswiki (400,000 connected items) but even if there is limit of 50, I can't get the result. It's strange because few months ago there were no such problems even with limit of 5000. Matěj Suchánek (talk) 14:08, 8 September 2014 (UTC)
Although loading takes some time, this query works for me and gives me this output. -- Bene* talk 17:37, 8 September 2014 (UTC)

Referenzen in WD

Moin Bene,
Martina Oertzen (Q15433304); und Günter Schwarz (Bürgermeister) (Q1561053);

:-) -- Bene* talk 17:37, 16 September 2014 (UTC)

itemsbycat tool

Hello! This tool is not worked right now, e.g. [5] lists all categories as missing. Fix it please. Yesterday itemsbycat is worked fine. -- Sergey kudryavtsev (talk) 06:11, 17 September 2014 (UTC)

@Sergey kudryavtsev: so what is the problem? As far as I can see they are missing in Wikidata and don't have an item associated yet. -- Bene* talk 10:26, 13 October 2014 (UTC)
When i was wrote to you, absolutely ALL categories was in "Missing items". Several days later i checked this link again, and all categories was in "Missing items". But now is all ok. This seems as some kind of temporary problem... -- Sergey kudryavtsev (talk) 10:44, 13 October 2014 (UTC)
