"Nghề sơn" / "Tranh"

Hello, you seem to be the only Vietnamese speaker here for now. I have a problem with interwikis. I wanted to merge Q1264543 and Q3305213, as they both referrred to painting (the object, not the activity). However, it appears that both items have a vietnamese sitelink ("Nghề sơn", and "Tranh"), could you have a look at that ? --Zolo (talk) 08:42, 23 March 2013 (UTC)

WMF projects - translation of labels and descriptions

Dear Mxn; I have seen you contributing at Wikimedia Incubator (Q846672) and at other pages related to WMF projects. OSM scripts

Just a quick note to thank you for your overpass.js user script, which is going to be very useful for me and, no doubt, many others.

Nôm character for Jesus

@Greenknight dv: I think I blindly copied what was on vi:Giê-su, specifically in vi:Đặc biệt:Khác/55755174. 支秋 is what Girolamo Maiorica apparently used in his works. I've removed the alias from Q302. – Minh Nguyễn ^💬 02:42, 18 March 2020 (UTC)

The WikiProject seems to be losing momentum. Perception of the size of COVID-19 as an enormous problem is fading. That is good, but it is also dangerous.

Postal service abbreviations - lexeme forms?

You've added a lot of US Postal service abbreviations as lexeme forms - for example L3755-F3 (RIV) on river (L3755). This doesn't seem right to me. There's no real grammar associated with these abbreviations, and they would only be used in addresses. Have you discussed it with anybody who's been working on lexemes? Wikidata talk:Lexicographical data would be the place to bring it up. Maybe this should instead be a special property (US Postal service abbreviation)? ArthurPSmith (talk) 17:28, 3 August 2020 (UTC)

@ArthurPSmith: Thanks for reaching out. I was going off of how Special:PermanentLink/1230867700#F3 had been tagged with the feature abbreviation (Q102786), USPS abbreviation (Q30619513) being a subclass of abbreviation (Q102786). I can see how a property would be more appropriate, though, especially considering that each abbreviation can be singular, plural, or both. OpenStreetMap numeric user ID (P8754)

Is this property supposed to replace website account > OpenStreetMap? Or should both be used together? --Trade (talk) 10:07, 17 February 2021 (UTC)

@Trade: I don't think it can, because Wikidata:Property proposal/OpenStreetMap user name was rejected. OpenStreetMap numeric user ID (P8754) is only the numeric user ID, which is more stable than the user name but not as useful for linking. Maybe OpenStreetMap numeric user ID (P8754) should be a qualifier on website account on (P553) though. – Minh Nguyễn ^💬 10:10, 17 February 2021 (UTC)

Call for participation in a task-based online experiment

I am Kholoud, a researcher at King's College London, and I work on a project as part of my PhD research, in which I have developed a personalised recommender system that suggests Wikidata items for the editors based on their past edits. I am collaborating on this project with Elena Simperl and Miaojing Shi.

I am inviting you to a task-based study that will ask you to provide your judgments about the relevance of the items suggested by our system based on your previous edits. Participation is completely voluntary, and your cooperation will enable us to evaluate the accuracy of the recommender system in suggesting relevant items to you. We will analyse the results anonymised, and they will be published to a research venue.

The study will start in late January 2022 or early February 2022, and it should take no more than 30 minutes.

On the topic of Shell

Hi, I saw that you added a new wikidata for Shell, and was just wondering why you made a new one, it confused me since I do work on OpenstreetMap and it changed the preset. Thanks in advance. Kline | vroom vroom 17:02, 9 February 2022 (UTC)

@Kline: Yes, I created Shell (Q110716465) and switched OSM's name-suggestion-index to it for a few reasons. Like most oil companies, Shell has many operations besides it franchised gas station chain. Commons has a separate category for the gas station chain, which created a need for a Wikidata item to represent the gas station chain specifically. The chain has also formally changed ownership a couple times in its history, most recently in 2005 as part of a corporate restructuring.

My changes were prompted by another recent name-suggestion-index change to update the corporate name from Royal Dutch Shell to Shell plc, which also would've required updating tags in OSM. Shell's association with the Shell corporation has been relatively stable over the years, making this distinction somewhat pedantic. However, most major gas station chains have changed ownership in more complex ways over the years, requiring this more detailed modeling (Conoco (Q109341187) is one example). Are you seeing any problems caused by Shell (Q110716465), other than validator suggestions to retag items (which would've happened anyways due to the Shell plc renaming)?

USPS abbreviation (Q30619513) as a grammatical feature

RUE in French or English ?

Hi,

I've seen that that added the USPS abbreviation (Q30619513) RUE on rue (L10101) and I reverted you as it's strange to have an English form on a French Lexeme. But afterward, I'm not so sure. Should we :

• keep as it was before (strange)
• keep the form but putting the language as French? do we consider the USPS to speak also French?
• create an English Lexeme "rue" to put the English form? (if we consider the USPS speak only English)
• something else?

I'll let you tell me what would be best.

@VIGNERON: Thanks for spotting that. I had been going through this table adding the abbreviations. The table is meant to include "common" street name abbreviations, regardless of the language, but most of the words are in English because most street names in the U.S. are in English; French is only common in a few regions like Louisiana. The Spanish-derived words are in a separate table because Spanish is the official language in Puerto Rico addresses.

Unlike many local authorities, the USPS doesn't consider words in street names to be language-specific; they only acknowledge that the names may be derived from one language or another. This makes some sense because streets can be named after people speaking any language, and many other names are total nonsense. Near me there's a Rue Avati; I suppose you could say the street name is French but it has been borrowed into English verbatim.

There's no consensus on how to do about the USPS abbreviation (Q30619513) (see the section above). But since it's especially strange to put an English form on a French lexeme, how about we create a new "rue" lexeme in English and put a USPS abbreviation (Q30619513) form on both lexemes with their respective languages?

We probably need others sources before creating lexemes. I couldn't find "rue" in any English dictionary. So maybe we should wait before creating it. For French, rue (L10101), I re-reverted myself and change the language to French.

One other small thing bothering me here is that an abbreviation is supposed to abbreviate but here "RUE" is juste the full word "rue" in all caps (I search if there are French references for abbreviating "rue" but apparently it's unclear, either R or also RUE ; I'll look more into it).

PS: indeed there is some "rues" in San Jose, see https://overpass-turbo.eu/s/1zLw (including https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/8969704 which is definitely a French name :D ).
