Clarify access rights? edit
I just fixed a link at Q24091322#P953 and noticed that full work available at URL (P953) is used there to point to a page where the full text of the piece (1 page) is available for free at a rather low resolution, whereas the default resolution is behind a paywall. On his talk page, User:James Hare (NIOSH) explains that he thinks P953 can point to full texts hidden behind access barriers (which may come in different flavours, e.g. paywalls or requirements to register for free to get access). I do not think this was the intention when the property was created, but I could not find any concrete stipulations on that matter, so I would like to invite clarifications. --Daniel Mietchen (talk) 23:13, 14 June 2016 (UTC)

- I understand that it was probably not the intention. I used full work available at URL (P953) as a last resort for situations where the DOI did not resolve for some strange reason and I wanted some way to get to the document from the item. Non-free only? edit

- Perhaps because if they are free they could be included in Wikisource? Which also begs the question, should works in Wikisource always have this property in addition to the sitelink? I guess that will make queries more consistent (or at least easier to construct). If so, it would be a nice bot task to add this property to all items with Wikisource sitelinks. mandatory qualifier constraint property archive URL edit
Can we delete the "mandatory qualifier constraint property archive URL" it is very confusing as to what it wants and every instance of using the "full work at" gets the message which appears as if an error, even though it is just a suggestion. Is it suggesting to me I should be using a link from the Wayback Machine? --RAN (talk) 19:54, 6 February 2020 (UTC)
- It's suggesting that you should add archive URL (P1065) as a qualifier whenever you are using the property. I know that we have a lot of pages missing the property, that's why i marked it as a suggestion constraint rather than a mandatory constraint. --Trade (talk) 00:09, 26 February 2020 (UTC)
Is there a good reason to limit this property to texts? edit

Many of the current labels and descriptions suggest that values should be texts, but why should that be so? The type constraint has always included work (Q386724), which includes non-text works. Although the proposal was limited to texts, since then several languages have expanded the scope of their label or description to encompass non-text works, including: English ([1], [2]), Russian ([3]), Swedish ([4]), Czech ([5]), Danish ([6]), Tajik ([7]), Hungarian ([8]), Hebrew ([9]), Spanish ([10]), and Esperanto ([11]).
Somewhat contrary to this trend, Trade added a conflicts-with constraint last year, excluding podcasts ([[12]]) and giving a replacement property of described at URL (P973), which IMO isn't the same thing. (Though I do support the constraint for YouTube videos and tweets, since more specific properties exist for those types of works).
There is no other property for linking to the full content of non-text works. Why shouldn't this property allow non-text works? Swpb (talk) 20:03, 14 July 2022 (UTC)

- Indeed, I didn't even notice that it was defined as text only. We included a URL for the full work of in the historical news reels collection of the Israeli Film Archive. See for example The Platters on a concert tour in Israel (Q112613885). Keren - WMIL (talk) 08:32, 17 July 2022 (UTC)

Full work is being mismatched edit
See for example this edit using a bot, where the "full text" of an ancient Greek play is provided, but the link points to a German translation. The "full work" of a book text should always link to instance of (P31) version, edition or translation (Q3331189) in a matching language, and never to instance of (P31) literary work (Q7725634) or the like. A warning should be displayed when trying to attach "full work URL" to a work data item instead of an edition data item. --EncycloPetey (talk) 14:36, 6 February 2023 (UTC)
- Did you change the constraints @EncycloPetey? Sorry I find it hard to work out who has done what in property histories. I have just noted that all my theses (which are items we enter at work level, not edition/version etc) are now throwing up constraints for P953. Your claim that full work should only be applied to editions is based on what exactly? Because I am not terribly happy at having tens of thousands of constraint violations on theses suddenly appear! - It was @Алексей Скрипник who removed work (Q386724) from the allowed values in Special:Diff/1905352964. I've undone that edit because it created over 450,000 constraint violations (see Special:Diff/1905684894). Maybe there are some other values which could be added which would bring the number down significantly? Although looking at the previous topic, it seems like work (Q386724) probably shouldn't be removed at all. Perhaps a "conflicts with" constraint would work? - Nikki (talk) 01:38, 2 June 2023 (UTC)
- Hello. According to FRBR (Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (Q16388)), a literary work can't have a link to a text. Link to a text should belong to a manifestation of the work. Unfortunately, Wikidata is full of these violations, but we should sooner or later address it. Constraint violation warnings might help editors to be aware of difference between a work and edition. --Алексей Скрипник (talk) 07:40, 2 June 2023 (UTC)

Allow usage of this property for all subclasses of periodicals edit
i have added a new subject type constraint, allowing the usage of this property for all subclasses of periodical publications. i think it is very useful to have this property on items of magazines, newspapers and all kind of such publication types if there is a website containing the full work of such publicaitons. e.g. Gasseziitig Lozärn (Q119216434)full work available at URL (P953)https://zentralgut.ch/toc/991354580105505/ Mfchris84 (talk) 12:55, 8 June 2023 (UTC)

- Thanks for pinging me, i was not aware that two type constraint Statements occur such an error. I added periodicals and changed the relation qualifier in the first subject type constraint. not allowed for poems or short stories? edit

- For books (fiction or non-fiction), Wikidata utilizes the FRBR model (see Wikidata:WikiProject Books). According to this model, we need to distinguish between a creative work (for example: The Raven by E.A. Poe) and its editions (for example: The Raven from "The Raven and Other Poems", 1845). Thus, a work itself is merely an abstract concept; it does not include the text of the work, but rather its accumulated editions and translations. If you wish to add a link to the text of a short story, you'll first need to create an edition of that story and link it to the corresponding work using Property:P629. Unfortunately, Wikidata currently lacks a user-friendly interface for managing works and their editions, thus this process can be time-consuming when executed manually. --Алексей Скрипник (talk) 10:50, 2 August 2023 (UTC)
