WikiProject India is started today. It is a great joy to start this project. Hope this project will help to further improve Indic Wikidata content. Suggestions are welcome. Thanks. --Titodutta (talk) 16:56, 7 September 2017 (UTC)

Lok sabha pages

Mahir message below I have created a module for fetching Lok sabha member names and populating infobox for Lok sabha pages. But need efforts to key-in data in Wikidata.

We can just compile the constituency name, candidate name, in you own language in excel then upload the data in wikidata.

Article: 1

Template: 2

Wikidata: 3

if we compile/translate the member/constituency names in wikidata then just copy the module/template in your langauge wiki and then the data will be populated directly in the article.

In next election (2019) nothing needs to be done in wikipedia. just upload the new data in wikidata is just enough.

What you can do? Just copy these template and module and run for one loksabha in you language wikipedia (Malayalam?)

--Naveenpf (talk) 03:43, 9 September 2017 (UTC)

I am already preparing a Google Sheet with data extracted from the loksabha website etc. that can be shared among interested contributors to do off-wiki translations for the names for all parliamentary persons since Independence. After wetting for all mistakes, these can be exported to Wkidata in bulk later. Please wait a few days and get in touch with me
Viswaprabha (talk) 20:48, 9 September 2017 (UTC)
@Naveenpf, Viswaprabha: Are you two still working on improving Lok Sabha members' Wikidata items?
WikiProject India has more than 50 participants and couldn't be pinged. Please post on the WikiProject's talk page instead. I am trying to establish a data model so that the information about their tenures in the Lok Sabha resembles in some fashion the data regarding other countries parliaments (you can see an example of what I intended to model at Mamata Banerjee (Q465041)--notice the claims pertaining to the Lok Sabha and compare those claims with similar claims about the House of Commons at David Cameron (Q192)). I would like to avoid what @Mdmahir: did in constituency items like Kolkata Uttar Lok Sabha constituency (Q6427315), where such election information is in the item for the constituency itself. If it is possible as well, I would like to do something similar for each state's Vidhan Sabha. Mahir256 (talk) 05:51, 22 January 2018 (UTC)
Also why is "Mahir" at the start of this subsection's title? Mahir256 (talk) 05:43, 22 January 2018 (UTC)
@Naveenpf: My question about whether you are working on items for Lok Sabha members still stands. Mahir256 (talk) 13:38, 22 January 2018 (UTC)
Hi Mahir, my interest is on maps side of Wikidata [4]. I have placed your old message if anyone else is interested in Lok sabha members. Just checked your recent edits, it looks every good. I will try to get Lok Sabha constituency public domain map, so that we can place in commons.--Naveenpf (talk) 14:51, 22 January 2018 (UTC)
@Naveenpf: See my work in relation to politicians in India below #Indian_politicians_and_related_information politicians in India below. I'm also planning to do some work on elected representatives in the Lok Sabha. Can you provide an update on where you have got to and what approach you have taken to adding this information? What identifier properties do we need?

Greetings to all the new Wikidata editors from India!

What new properties for identifiers do we need, at a national or state level, for people, places, organisations or other things in India?

By way of example our identifiers for the United Kingdom are listed in: Template:United Kingdom properties and those for Australia in Template:United Kingdom properties.

Properties must be proposed via Wikidata:Property_proposal, but I am happy to help anyone who wants to do that. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 14:59, 10 September 2017 (UTC)

Thanks for the great gesture and offer. We will make sure to seek your help anytime we need it from now onwards. :-)
As the collection grow up, we will be needing many more national / regional IDs and codes. Right away, I want to have a University Code and College Code to be assigned by the All India Survey for Higher Education, a standardization body constituted by the Govt of India. These Ids start with a U- (for universities) and C- (for colleges). eg. a typical ID for a college will be C-xxxxx (5 digits) and for a college will be U-xxxx (4 digits) where x is a digit 0 to 9. We may name these as AISHE IDs for Indian Colleges and AISHE IDs for Indian Universities.
Next, One of the basic coding system now having acquired as a somewhat concrete structure is the [Indian Standard Classification of Education]. Essentially, this is a schema of classification to be used for all official communications and documentation in the educational sector within India. Will you please have a look at it and see how we can evolve a translation of this structure as properties and items within WIkidata? Thanks again. ViswaPrabhaവിശ്വപ്രഭtalk 20:27, 10 September 2017 (UTC)
@Viswaprabha: OK, first thing - are there URLs for any of these? Specific examples relating to individual Wikidata items would be useful. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 20:48, 10 September 2017 (UTC)

I have now made India properties. Please translate its texts. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 21:01, 10 September 2017 (UTC)

 • All locations in India have a six-digit PIN code. That's one. Might be postal code (P281) based on tinyurl [dot] com / y9affxcz
 • Most cities and towns in India have an STD code for phone number prefixes. Might be local dialing code (P473) based on tinyurl [dot] com / y9ylzcvj
 • Every state has its own vehicle code(s). A two letter prefix for vehicle numbers (AP, WB etc)
Thats the first few I can think of, from the top of my head. Soni (talk) 16:33, 13 September 2017 (UTC)

In India Technical Colleges are approved by All India Council for Technical Education (Q3532608) and they have been provided with a Institute ID to each college. This ID gives details
 • Institution name
 • Address (postal code (P281),State,District)
 • Institution type (Government/Aided/Un-aided).

If this identifier property is added to wikidata it's easier to fetch/Verify an institution. I have proposed the property at Wikidata:Property proposal/Aicte Institute ID. -Jinoytommanjaly (talk) 20:12, 25 February 2018 (UTC)

Wikidatan of the Month

WikiProject India has more than 50 participants and couldn't be pinged. Please post on the WikiProject's talk page instead.

Inspired from the idea of Featured Wikimedian of the Month by Wikimedia Chapter (India), I propose the concept of "Wikidatan of the Month" to WikiProject India on Wikidata. For this, we can discuss create a workflow to select the Featured Wikimedian, and various criteria pertaining to that. Before we start, I suggest the project members to give their inputs. Thanks to User:Titodutta for supporting me proposing this. --Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (talk) 16:53, 10 October 2017 (UTC)
Support Sounds like a great idea, thank you for proposing it! Could you share some links on what the process and criteria looks like elsewhere? —Prtksxna (talk) 17:12, 10 October 2017 (UTC)
Sounds like an awesome idea to me. Thanks Krishna. It would be great if we can have a featured Indic Wikimedian every month. It would be great if we can honor them with (specially if they are from India) a Wikidata Tshirt or something like that. --Titodutta (talk) 18:07, 10 October 2017 (UTC)
Excellent Idea. This will be very motivating. Thanks for the proposal. --Pavan santhosh.s (talk) 18:42, 10 October 2017 (UTC)
This is a great idea. I support this whole heartedly. I suggest not to have very strict process and criteria. This should be fun and motivating. --Satdeep Gill (talk) 13:22, 12 October 2017 (UTC)
Really good, motivating idea for contributors -- Suyash Dwivedi (talk) 06:06, 13 October 2017 (UTC)
Thank You all, I'll propose a draft workflow, that we can discuss upon. @Titodutta: "specially if they are from India"? I didn't understand this phrase, we are only focusing on India Wikidata editors right? --Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (talk) 12:07, 13 October 2017 (UTC)
Yes, do that and create some wonderful template to put on the userpage of the winner! --Kritzolina (talk) 19:58, 13 October 2017 (UTC)
Krishna, I meant if we are including T-shirt, it would be easier to courier to the editors who are based in India. Sending tings abroad takes more time and energy. However we can not have this restriction forever, and the point is up for discussion. --Titodutta (talk) 10:17, 14 October 2017 (UTC)
@Titodutta: Hi Tito, got your point. Sorry for the delay. I'll come up with the draft framework by the end of tomorrow. --Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (talk) 16:02, 16 October 2017 (UTC)

Proposed workflow

Apart from the work flow we need to take care of the following points before we can execute the program.

 1. Creation of 2–3 member team who are responsible to ultimately select the Featured Wikidatan, interview him/her, update the concernced pages etc. Simply to say they handle the entire program
 2. Creation of a pages to handle the entire program, including main, nominations page, voting age, archival pages etc.
 3. T-shirt to be awarded if the Featured Wikimedia in based in India
 4. Digital Certificate to be awarded
 5. What happens to the nominations are do make it to the final i.e. are not featured, whether to forward them to next month, and to archives? They may renominated.
 6. If an editor is Featured once, he/she automatically becomes ineligible for further nominations.
Workflow
 • Step 1: Nominations are proposed on the nominations page. (before 7th)
 • We need to have a limit for nominations, like only the first five per month, else we may end up with nominating everyone by everyone.
 • Step 2: Eligible Nominations are forwarded to the voting page. (before 10th)
 • Step 3: Voting takes place (10th – 20th)
 • Step 4: Featured Wikidatan selected (before 25th)
 • Step 5: Interview and updating pages, and community notified (before 29th)
 • Step 6: Archival and Clean-up (before 30th)

WikiProject India has more than 50 participants and couldn't be pinged. Please post on the WikiProject's talk page instead. Pinging for discussion. @Titodutta: Sorry for the delay. --Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (talk) 13:52, 21 October 2017 (UTC)

Hello @Krishna Chaitanya Velaga:, I appreciate your idea and interest towards this. In my opinion the selection time should be shortened. Means voting can be one week long. "(10th-17th)" and selected before 20th.
As an award T-shirt would be great. In my opinion instead of digital certificate, we can send them post cards. The post card may contain their best contribution, some interesting facts about that contribution like how many page views it got in a month and etc. --Gopala Krishna A (talk) 08:07, 27 October 2017 (UTC)
Yes, that is nice idea. We can send a digital certificate, but for postcard or t-shirt, I would like to know whether CIS-A2K would help us in this. Pining @Titodutta: for this. Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (talk) 05:28, 31 October 2017 (UTC)

Hi everyone, I've requested CIS-A2K to help us in desigining a logot for this project. So that we could represent ourselves with a standard model in long term. The A2K team has given us a model of Wikidata dertivative, it can be seen at File:Wikidata_Workshop_South_India_Logo.png. I'm proposing that the colour to be spread to entire India map with a title WikiProject India. I request for your comments on aspects of design that may be included. --Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (talk) 05:33, 31 October 2017 (UTC)

Monthly stat

User:Jayantanth works on a monthly stat for Indic Wikisource. If we start a similar stat for Wikidata (Indic languages): a) what do you think, is it a good idea, b) what all should be included there: I can think of Labels and Descriptions count for Indic languages (as, bn, hi, ta, te, kn, ml and so on), and what else? --Titodutta (talk) 10:09, 11 April 2018 (UTC)

@Titodutta: We have such a stat (which can be updated however frequently we wish) for labels/descriptions/aliases; see the first query under ‘Quarry’ in the queries tab. As for other things, this would depend on which items we consider important for this WikiProject and a series of queries to identify them all. Mahir256 (talk) 12:39, 11 April 2018 (UTC)

Alias in Indian language

A name like "Kalpana" is quite common in many Indian languages, such as Assamese, Bengali, Hindi, Marathi, Telugu etc. Adding alias in Devanagari such as this, in my opinion, does not add any value. I feel these alias should be avoided unless absolutely needed. Note: we have similar issue in many more (mostly female given name) articles. Regards. --Titodutta (talk) 21:19, 24 April 2018 (UTC)

@Harmonia Amanda:, as the subject of @Titodutta:’s linked edit. This does play into a concern I have about labels for name items in languages which do not use the script marked for that named item (e.g. Bengali labels for names in the Latin script or Hindi labels for names in the Cyrillic script or something like that). Mahir256 (talk) 23:03, 24 April 2018 (UTC)
Hi! It's because the item is about the given name "कल्‍पना" (the string, not the language). So the string is used as label for all languages using devanagari, and is present as an alias and in the description of all other languages. We separate names based on how they are written, for all languages/writing systems; Victor (Q539581) is in Latin script, so the Latin script string is in the description of all non-Latin script languages and as an alias. Viktor (Q30106749) is in Cyrillic, so the string is in the description and as an alias for other languages… otherwise we wouldn't be able to differentiate between people named "Victor" and people named "Виктор". It's the same for कल्‍पना, which is not the same name as "Kalpana". The label needs to be in the language of the label, so every time the item is about a name in another writing script the label is a transliteration and not the name itself. So the real subject is both as an alias and in the description. It's the system we use so it works no matter what writing system the original name is using. Kind regards, --Harmonia Amanda (talk) 14:08, 5 May 2018 (UTC)
@Titodutta:, in case you didn't see her response. @Harmonia Amanda: So if we are to add name items to people whose native language is any other Indian language not written in the Devanagari script, we would need to make items for those name items in every other Indian script? I contend that it is already very scattered having seven different Latin script family name items (each of those last seven words is a different link) for the same Indian name that in all cases would be rendered identically in a given script Mahir256 (talk) 20:34, 9 May 2018 (UTC)
@Mahir256, Titodutta: basically, yes. It's the only way we found to be able to deal with all the difficulties with names. We chose the "one string : one item" approach because it's the only one which allow us to work with sources from all other the world, with different scripts, with people who changed names, emigrated to other countries, etc. this way, we have one item by string, which is in native label (P1705); then we have the labels/descriptions/aliases saying what the items is about and all transliterations are added as aliases. It's tiring to create the names in the first place but after that we have data we can use. Otherwise, we wouldn't be able to know if people are really named चक्रवर्ती or Chakravorty (one name would be transliterated differently in some Latin-script languages, the other would stay written that way). The difficulty with this approach is only in creating the names entries (which can be automated). All other approaches we thought of made problems when using the data, which is way more complicated to solve. For some languages, we even have another layer: several Japanese names will share the same kanjis, but be written differently in kanas. So for Japanese we have different entries for all couples kanji-kanas… Basically, after months and months of thinking it's actually the easiest way we found to deal with that. --Harmonia Amanda (talk) 08:56, 11 May 2018 (UTC)

Painting by Indian

I think these ("painting by Indian") descriptions are not descriptive enough. However, I do not know much about the subject. Suggestions? --Titodutta (talk) 20:52, 29 April 2018 (UTC)

@Titodutta: In the absence of information about the creators of those paintings on the information pages themselves, it may be better to alter the description merely to note when the specific painting was made (as in "painting c. 1745-1750 housed in the National Gallery of Victoria"). Indian politicians and related information

WikiProject India has more than 50 participants and couldn't be pinged. Please post on the WikiProject's talk page instead. I'm working to add information on elected politicians across India - at the level of state and city legislatures as well as nationally. I'm doing this work in my job as a Data Analyst at mySociety mySociety (Q10851773) and it is part of a larger project to collect similar information across all countries

mySociety (Q10851773) is working with Gender and Politics to collect some of this data, but would love to work with others on this as well.

In terms of entering the data I'm currently following the model from Wikidata:WikiProject_every_politician, but would appreciate any feedback on that model and whether it is appropriate for India.

At the moment I'm focussing on making sure all the basic information all exists for all States plus Puducherry and Dehli which includes: State legislature A role for members of the legislature A head of government for the state/UT An executive for the state

This is all using the approach at Wikidata:WikiProject_every_politician. Once this is complete (and most of this is already there) I will be working on adding information about political parties (I'm expecting most of that information to be already in Wikidata) and constituencies/electoral districts (where I expect there will be more work.

Only once all that is done will I look at adding details of individual politicians.

Any advice, comments, questions or help with this work are very welcome Owenpatel (talk) 14:52, 22 June 2018 (UTC)

Just to update on this, I've spent the last few weeks updating/creating items for constituencies of state legislative assemblies in India. I believe (barring a few little bits of tidying up) this work is now complete Owenpatel (talk) 10:59, 29 July 2018 (UTC)

Label-a-thon around Indian independence day

A couple of Indian Wikipedia communities are planning small edit-a-thons around 15 August. You may see mr:विकिपीडिया:भारतीय स्वातंत्र्यलढा संपादन अभियान २०१८. I was thinking we can do a small edit-a-thon or label-a-thon on Wikidata. Unlike the other community, I think we can do it for 2-3 days, 14-16 August, or 15-17 August? We can pick a particular topic which requires work, and we can work on it. Please share your opinion. @User:Mahir256, User:KCVelaga --Titodutta (talk) 05:55, 7 August 2018 (UTC)

@Titodutta, KCVelaga: This sounds like a pretty good idea! We should first nail down the scope of the items to which labels/descriptions/aliases will be added (places? people? things?—but more specific, of course), but we could also assess if existing labels/descriptions/aliases need to be cleaned up, such as names with incorrect pronunciations, as well as if a set of items has an incomplete set of labels/descriptions/aliases (e.g. only some winners of a set of National Film Awards have sufficient labels/descriptions/aliases). Mahir256 (talk) 13:40, 7 August 2018 (UTC)
@Titodutta: Hi Tito, this seems to be a nice idea. Adding to what Mahir said, I would suggest using the lists here, in the best way possible, if at all they can be. 15–17 August is a good option (personally). Also, we need to decide on how are we going to track and assess the participants, who would be organizing this etc. Do you have any thoughts? KCVelaga (talk) 16:22, 7 August 2018 (UTC)
@KCVelaga: I may go through and rework the lists on that page a bit (moving them to a new page just for this label-a-thon). Tracking and assessing participants can be done on the Outreach Dashboard as with previous editathons. Before this begins I will try to come up with a condensed, combined version of Help:Label, Help:Description, and Help:Alias. Mahir256 (talk) 16:38, 7 August 2018 (UTC)
Both the suggestions are quite good. Tomorrow morning we can start the event page. I am ok with any list or task related to the theme. --Titodutta (talk) 18:49, 7 August 2018 (UTC)
User:Mahir256, User:KCVelaga, I have quick-started a page here. I'd ask Mahir to add a couple of tasks. As verifiability is an important issue, most probably I'll add a few notable items for source addition later.
Mahir, Krishna, any thought on WD:Showcase? Perhaps we can try to make a few itmes as showcase? About the dates, please feel free to change dates. --Titodutta (talk) 17:24, 9 August 2018 (UTC)
@Titodutta, Mahir256: Everything looks good for the edit-a-thon. Keeping the edit-a-thon aside, in the past, I've tried to promote and revamp this process, you can see the discussion here. However, due to other commitments, I was not able to spend time on this. I think that we can promote showcase items through this edit-a-thon, by asking the participants to develop items to showcase grade. KCVelaga (talk) 11:32, 11 August 2018 (UTC)
I would like to ping @Rajasekhar1961:, a Telugu Wikipedian who is interested in IID-Edit-a-thon and especially working on Wikidata Items of Indian Independence activists. --Pavan santhosh.s (talk) 16:59, 11 August 2018 (UTC)
Pavan, please message him personally as well, if it helps. Krishna, exciting idea. --Titodutta (talk) 21:59, 11 August 2018 (UTC)────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────

Should the ending date be changed to 19 August to include the weekend? I mean, during weekend some editors may more time to work on the label-a-thon. --Titodutta (talk) 21:59, 11 August 2018 (UTC)

@Titodutta: I have no problem with that. Mahir256 (talk) 22:07, 11 August 2018 (UTC)
@Titodutta: Yes, including the weekend is a nice idea. Then I would suggest the start date to be 15 August 2018, so that we can mark the Independence Day, and close it by the weekend. So the dates would be 15–19 August 2018. Also as Mahir mentioned in the FB group, the event's title should include label-a-thon. Finally, I would suggest renaming the event title to "Indian Independence Week Label-a-thon 2018". KCVelaga (talk) 01:39, 12 August 2018 (UTC)
For showcase items, let us not mix that with this event, but have it some other time. KCVelaga (talk) 01:44, 12 August 2018 (UTC)
Yes we can include the weekend. -- Ranjithsiji (talk) 03:04, 12 August 2018 (UTC)

Adding items and information to help in natural disaster management

Hi everyone! हाय

I am a Wikidata enthusiast, mostly active in Switzerland, Europe. I had a look at Kerala Rescue to see how I could help and started writing some queries / code around Wikidata. I thought that it might be useful to visualize points around the rescue requests, to somehow concentrate help around them. See also the GitHub comment that I posted here.

I wanted to ask if there is a group (within Wikidata India) focusing on the creation and description of items that might be useful for such situations with natural disasters. I wonder if I could somehow help around that. I visited India last year and I was fascinated by it. So, I would like to contribute to anything that could help people via information and technology. Showcase items

Hello board, and User:KCVelaga, a few days ago on this noticeboard we touched the topic of showcase items. However we could not continue the discussion the because of the ongoing label-a-thon. The event will end for this year in less than next 22 hours. Perhaps we can resume the discussion about showcase items? --Titodutta (talk) 22:27, 18 August 2018 (UTC)

Hi @Titodutta:, thanks for the ping. Yes, I strongly feel that this aspect of Wikidata should be focused for two reasons. As the Wikidata community, we'll have to feature our best works (as FAs for Wikipedia), and also, the lack of references for Wikdata statements is often criticized (this also has been a long-term concern by English Wikipedians, for Wikidata-enabled infoboxes). So focusing on showcase items to will help us to reduce this gap, even to some extent. I am not sure about how we should proceed with this. But to take this spirit into the community, we definitely need a campaign. May be we can plan something similar to this label-a-thon, marking some other important days. I would suggest doing a focused campaign from 14 October (World Standards Day) to 29 October (Wikidata birthday). This is just my opinion, comments are welcome. Pinging @Mahir256: KCVelaga (talk) 04:08, 19 August 2018 (UTC)
or 1 December or 7 December (Armed Forces Flag Day). KCVelaga (talk) 04:18, 19 August 2018 (UTC)
That's an interesting idea. In addition to what is being planned here, I'd like to follow general Wikipedia's aim, the way some editors want to improve important articles such as Indian Independence Day, city, state, language, favorite writer etc to GA/FA. Fully developing important items would be really good. --Titodutta (talk) 04:32, 19 August 2018 (UTC)
@Titodutta: Yes, we should first focus on important items. Maybe we can create a list of 2,000 important items in the first stage. It is because, since the items have to be completely improved with all the statements and references, more time needs to be spent on each item. For generating the lists, I would suggest using the stats table at en:Wikipedia:WikiProject India/Navigation. KCVelaga (talk) 14:58, 19 August 2018 (UTC)
@Titodutta: Yes, I felt so. How about 250? What do you mean by personal tasks? KCVelaga (talk) 16:43, 20 August 2018 (UTC)

Skill-enhancement online sessions

Hello, we have just finished India Independence Day 2018 - Label-a-thon. (It was great to see so much involvement and energy).
I was wondering if we should conduct a few online Wikidata training sessions. This may help to enhance Wikidata-related skills.

The idea is: we can have 1 hour's or 2 hours' online sessions. We can use platform like Google Meet, Google Hangout, or Bluejeans. We can invite resource persons to talk on it.

A few topics I have in mind are: a) Lexeme structure (see WD:Lexeme), b) 10 Wikidata tools like resonator, petscan. . . c) understanding identifiers, d) current events such as ASI monuments works, e) advanced quarries, f) better understanding of properties and property proposals. We can have a detailed needs-assessment of what you need (please share your opinion below) before we start.

I'd encourage your views on the draft plan. With best wishes, --Titodutta (talk) 19:33, 21 August 2018 (UTC)

@Titodutta: Hi Tito, this is a good idea. I would suggest doing one session for every three weeks (depending on the need). If we are trying to record the sessions then we can opt for Bluejeans, else Google Meet should be enough. Before that, let us do a needs-assessment survey, and see what Indian Wikidata contributors are in need of. KCVelaga (talk) 16:05, 27 August 2018 (UTC)

Station code and Indian railway station code

Hello, what is the difference between station code (P296) and Indian Railways station code (P5696). Should all station code (P296) in India (Q668) be changed to Indian Railways station code (P5696) eventually? --Titodutta (talk) 07:32, 24 August 2018 (UTC)

P296 is intended for those rail stations whose countries do not have specific properties for their station codes, so as a result values for P296 on Indian railway stations should be moved to use P5696. Mahir256 (talk) 00:48, 25 August 2018 (UTC)

Importing around 40000 ngodarpan non-profit organisation information to wikidata

Hi

I've downloaded about 40000 non-profit organisations (probably out of around 300000 in india) as were available in ngodarpan (from niti ayog) database. It would be great to import this into wikidata and maintain there.

Could any of you suggest more on this, as I'm new to wikidata... Cheers  – The preceding unsigned comment was added by Suman.bahuguna (talk • contribs) at 06:33, 7 November 2018‎ (UTC).

Vehicle number plate

How do we handle vehicle number plate codes in India places? w:en:List of Regional Transport Office districts in India is there. Do we add codes for administrative territory only or in each place item like cities, towns, villages? In Wikipedia articles, a value is added like GJ 12 for w:en:Kutch district and also in each place article. Currently such value qualifies as a constraint violation in licence plate code (P395). Regards, -Nizil Shah (talk) 04:18, 14 February 2019 (UTC)

@Nizil Shah: I'd think that the property is best used in the highest-level administrative division for which the code applies. In your case, the code "GJ 12" should only be present on the item for Kutch district and not on the items for any administrative division located within Kutch district. If the district is divided between license plate codes, then the individual codes should be added to the items for the appropriate talukas, and if the talukas are divided then to whatever divisions lie below them in the hierarchy. Wildlife sanctuaries of India

Hello, Need help in adding IUCN protected areas category Property:P819 -IUCN category IV: Habitat/Species Management Area Q14545639 tag to all Wildlife sanctuaries of India. This is to create map of WLS . We have already mapped and tagged wikidata. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_national_parks_of_India#Map . We have already mapped 250+ WLS https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Wildlife_sanctuaries_of_India -- Naveenpf (talk) 02:39, 15 February 2019 (UTC)

@Naveenpf: (Yay, you're back!) First, I assume you're referring to IUCN protected areas category instead of "ADS bibcode". Second, are you sure these are all IUCN category IV? I see Kuno Wildlife Sanctuary and Kalesar National Park in that list, which suggest that they should both be category II (national park). Third, you can probably add this statement to all of the items in PetScan: simply go there, take the SPARQL query you used in the wildlife sanctuary list to which you linked above and put it in the "SPARQL" box in the "Other sources" tab, then click "Do it!", then (if you have already logged in to Widar) in a text box in the top right of the query results you can add "P814:Q14545639" and then click "Process commands" to add the statement to all returned items. These have recently been digitised and OCR'd by the British Library and may be of interest:

"The datasets for this collection are based on the British Library’s collection of bound volume Quarterly Lists: printed catalogue records of Indian books published quarterly and by province of British India between 1867 and 1947.

"The catalogues are predominantly in English language with some Bengali and mostly arranged in table format, capturing descriptive metadata about the books, including the name and addresses of printers and publishers, the number of copies printed and often the price, as well as much more." Maintenance list to add depicts (P180) statements to artworks in collections in India

Hello everyone! I have recently noticed that Wikidata has a lot of items for artworks from collections in India, and I have just created a maintenance list in my user space to add depicts (P180) statements to them. By all means, feel free to re-use this list if you think it's useful! Cheers, Spinster 💬 13:22, 29 February 2020 (UTC)

Workflow to assist curation of Indian-language strings versus Wikidata lexemes

WD:Ordia is a Wikidata frontend for lexeme-related Wikidata content. It has a text-to-lexeme utility that allows to enter text in a given language and to check to what extent this text is already present in forms of known Wikidata lexemes. Some basic support currently exists for about a dozen languages of India (Hindi example) but it needs some testing in terms of the appropriate recognition of things like word boundaries, punctuation and such, for each of the supported languages. This utility can in principle be coupled with the lexeme forms tool but no language of India other than English is currently supported there. I plan to assist with smoothing out these workflows, but I am not very familiar with Indian languages, so would like to team up with others who are. --Daniel Mietchen (talk) 23:10, 16 March 2020 (UTC)

@Daniel Mietchen: I can help you (@Fnielsen:?) with support for Bengali if I had a better idea of how word boundaries, punctuation, and such are handled in the tool for other languages. Mahir256 (talk) 23:34, 16 March 2020 (UTC)
I do actually think Ordia (Q63379419) supports other Indian languages,e e.g., Punjabi (Q58635) [5]. I did introduce another word tokenization back in January 2019 based on feedback. Breton (Q12107) is still an issue [6], but Indian languages might work. Let me know if it doesn't. Lexeme forms are support by other languages, — not just English. I use if for Danish. — Finn Årup Nielsen (fnielsen) (talk) 16:14, 17 March 2020 (UTC)
I misread Daniel's comment on Indian and English languages. Sorry. In short: Let me know if there is any problems. — Finn Årup Nielsen (fnielsen) (talk) 20:11, 17 March 2020 (UTC)

National Institute of Virology

Information related to the National Institute of Virology (Q6973748)   is not much curated here at this point. Would be great if we could improve that. --Daniel Mietchen (talk) 04:56, 26 March 2020 (UTC)

@Daniel Mietchen: Can you elaborate on what specifically you want done in this regard? Mahir256 (talk) 05:32, 29 March 2020 (UTC)
@Mahir256: What I have in mind starts with affiliated people, their publications and the topics and co-authors of these. --Daniel Mietchen (talk) 00:59, 7 April 2020 (UTC)
@Daniel Mietchen:, thanks for pointing the data gap. Yes, we can start working on that. -- Bodhisattwa (talk) 04:59, 7 April 2020 (UTC)
Scholia has a dedicated page for curating inferred gaps related to the institution. --Daniel Mietchen (talk) 02:07, 12 April 2020 (UTC)

Identifiers for Public Listed Companies in India

For Companies listed on Indian Stock Market, can we add an identifier against its Market listing number. For example Bank of Baroda can found as BOM: 532134 on Bombay Stock Exchange. An assistance would be grateful, still learning WIKIDATA. -Abhinav619 (talk) 08:11, 31 March 2020 (UTC)

@Abhinav619: Yes we can have new properties for both both the stock exchanges Bombay Stock Exchange (Q638398) and National Stock Exchange of India (Q638740) in India. You can propose new property here-❙❚❚❙❙ JinOy ❚❙❚❙❙ 19:03, 31 March 2020 (UTC)

Needs assessment for Wikidata Movement Resource

Hi WikiProject India,

CIS-A2K is planning to invest some resources from May-June 2020 to create community movement resource (CMR) materials in English and different Indic languages for Wikidata in the form of tutorials, handbooks, infographics, videos, animations etc. The aim of this initiative is to build a pool of resource materials for Wikidata eventually, which will serve as ready-made handy references for new as well as experienced users. You are requested to fill up this form, so that we can understand your needs on different topics of Wikidata. You are also very welcome to actively participate in the process and help us build the CMR with your different areas of expertise.

Indian scientists datathon

Hi WikiProject India,

You are receiving this message as you are one of the participants of WikiProject India on Wikidata and/or a subscriber of the Wikidata India newsletter.

Hope you and your loved ones are safe and sound during this ongoing COVID-19 pandemic situation.

This is for your kind information that, from 22nd May, 2020 Friday to 24th May, 2020 Sunday, a datathon will be happening on Indian scientists on Wikidata. The lack of data about Indian scientists, their works and publications on Wikidata is the reason behind conducting the datathon. Considering the ongoing pandemic, the datathon will also focus on scientists working on SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19.

The tasklist of the datathon is flexible. Participants can choose their own preferred task on this topic

Hoping for your active participation.

Take care and stay safe,

Bodhisattwa (CIS-A2K)
