Scope for this property in science edit

This property may be taken to refer only to sports. However, in science you would often have researchers and scientific papers "funded by" a foundation. sponsor (P859) could be used for to describe that case, e.g., for my own article Mining the posterior cingulate: Segregation between memory and pain components (Q21012713) we put in the "Acknowledgment" section: "Finn Årup Nielsen is funded by the Villum Kann Rasmussen Foundation." This could be translated to Mining the posterior cingulate: Segregation between memory and pain components (Q21012713) -> sponsor (P859) -> Villum Foundation (Q12341080). I wonder what the intention was with the property. Would it be ok to use it that way? — Finn Årup Nielsen (fnielsen) (talk) 15:30, 21 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

Just for reference, it seems that this proposal has been widely adopted. (On at least 100,000 publication items.) − Pintoch (talk) 09:46, 9 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
Would it be appropriate to add more "Wikidata property related to __" to this so that it's really clear that this is not just for sport? It seems to be fully-described in the context of sport with the examples and Discussion page making it clear it's appropriate to apply to research as well. I was thinking adding Wikidata property related to science (Q61058429) for example. Ruthbrarian (talk) 13:00, 15 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Fnielsen, Pintoch, Ruthbrarian: I suddenly find Commons:Structured data/Properties table, where says:

Created with support by | sponsor (P859) | Item | To indicate a funder, a Wikimedia affiliate, and/or a specific program through which this file was created or uploaded

Should they alter this thing to use another proper property? Or this property should in fact not be a sport-only property? --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 13:09, 29 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

There doesn't seem to be any reason to limit it to sports since the term, activity, and set of constraints could apply to sport, science, art, writing, and more. Perhaps instead of removing references to sport, also add references to science, art, etc? Ruthbrarian (talk) 15:00, 2 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

Item requires statement constraint edit

I've removed the item requires statement constraint because it only applies to items, when this property is used on items and media files. See T269724 for the ticket asking to be able to limit constraints to particular entity types. - Nikki (talk) 10:07, 3 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

  • It's a bug if SDC uses an "item requires" constraints to refer to Media Entities. --- Jura 13:08, 3 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
It's not a bug. That constraint has been used for other entity types for years. The oldest I found was from 2014 [1] (and I didn't check all the properties, so there might be an older one). Even you use it for other entity types: Special:Diff/684418391, Special:Diff/1325374630.
Either way, it doesn't matter whether it's a bug or not. This property is used over 1.2 million times on Commons and that many constraint violations is completely unacceptable (especially when they're false positives). Removing the constraint is not intended to be permanent, but it should not be re-added until the number of violations it creates is significantly reduced.
If in the meantime someone wants to find items using this property which don't have instance of (P31), it is very easy to query for (e.g. this query). - Nikki (talk) 20:35, 6 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
    • It's not meant to apply to MediaEntities. I'm not aware of anything to support that "item requires statements" constraints should apply to media entities or be usable outside Wikidata. Please point me to the discussion on Wikidata to the contrary. --- Jura 08:48, 11 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

Thibaut (talk) 20:55, 11 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
