Odd edits from 78.55.25.245 (and related IPs)

This IP (and I believe some nearby IP's) edited a lot of format as a regular expression (P1793) values and the related property constraints over the weekend - see Contributions, for example this edit; see also this edit undoing another user's edit of a formatter, from IP address 78.55.177.69. I don't see that any of these edits were harmful - they seem to preserve the regular expressions in terms of content, while re-ordering the elements. But it's a bit idiosyncratic, and odd for an IP user to be doing this sort of thing. Somebody we've banned? ArthurPSmith (talk) 13:11, 7 May 2018 (UTC)

The anon user has not made a secret of their intention, which was to unify some regular expressions to be able to better search for patterns in them, as well as to make some of them more precise. Not sure whether it is helpful, but as long as it does not harm I would not worry about it.
Based on the topical contributions of the IP user, their excessive workload during the past months (and years), and the ISP of the ranges they use, I have a clear idea who could be the person behind it, and if I am correct it would indeed be a globally banned user (in 2015). However, the contributions as well as their tone look pretty okay these days, as far as I can see. Range blocks would be pretty complicated here anyways, since that banned user has proven to be able to switch IPs swiftly within pretty large ranges. As soon as something goes wrong with their editing this would be the measure to use, but at this point I guess it would be wiser to keep an eye on them, rather to provoke excessive range blocks. —MisterSynergy (talk) 13:54, 7 May 2018 (UTC)

Hello, I just noticed that the place Baliya Q638652 is in Nepal while the most of the Wikipedia projects linking here are meant to link a place with the similar name Ballia Q7180187, Uttar Pradesh, India. Could another administrator review Pasleim's closure of Wikidata:Properties_for_deletion#Property:P4839. It seems that their conclusion mainly reflects their view expressed in the discussion. This somehow makes my doubt about their other closures of discussions there.

Part of the reason Pasleim closed that proposal, @Jura1:, is because the aforementioned page is specifically meant for properties for deletion. If you think the Wolfram Language entity code property should be created, then your nomination of the property (and other properties) on that page as that page is presently named makes little sense. In the interest of keeping your discussions alive just a little bit longer, I will wholeheartedly support a change in the name of that page, in the spirit of enwiki's "templates/redirects/categories/etc. for discussion", to "Properties for discussion". I leave it to you to propose the change on Wikidata:Project chat if you so desire. Mahir256 (talk) 06:24, 9 May 2018 (UTC)
I think it should be deleted and created once we figured out what to do. If the conclusion would be that it should remain but converted to another datatype, this should be stated in the conclusion and implemented that way. The result here is now that we had a messy situation for three months and it hasn't been fixed.

For my batches, I noticed that one needs to enter view that displays a single batch and stop it from there. The button on the summary list didn't work. I haven't followed the story around MQ, so I haven't much of an opinion on the block.

There are at least 20 parallel batches by MechQuesterBot and Tim Hardcastle still running in QuickStatements right now. I can’t see more, because the list ends at 20 entries and I cannot expand it. Right now, no edits are made due to the block.
I should inform @Rschen7754 here, who blocked MechQuester in April. With the Artix Kreiger accounts the user has made millions of edits this year at a rate which caused lots of server strain. As far as I understand the current edit rate limitations were also, but not exclusively, added due to MechQuesters edit behavior.
Anyway, MechQuester should not evade an indefinite block with new or unblocked accounts. If they want to edit again, they should request unblock, preferentially at User talk:MechQuester, and convince the community that there will not be another abusive behavior involving multiple accounts (as again in this case), and no excessive edit rates in their batches. —MisterSynergy (talk) 10:31, 14 May 2018 (UTC)

  Info there is an unblock request by MechQuester on their user talk page. I ask fellow admins to have a look, and inform particularly @Rschen7754, Jasper Deng who have recently blocked MechQuester’s “fresh start” accounts named “Artix Kreiger” indefinitely due to socking. As far as I know, MechQuester’s socking at Wikidata has never been as severe as in other projects, and the “fresh start” Artix Kreiger accounts were relatively easy to identify as alternate accounts of MechQuester from the very beginning on. The MechQuester account itself has not been blocked indefinitely for socking until April, although the socking activities are know since last summer. Since I think that the user deserves a fair treatment, I suggest to review their current block based on their own statement at User talk:MechQuester. —MisterSynergy (talk) 20:53, 15 May 2018 (UTC)

Any admin available to help Wikidata hackathon on Wed 16 May?

Hi, I'm running a Wikidata hackathon on Wed 16 May (1-3pm GMT) as part of the Digital Day of Ideas at the University of Edinburgh so looking to avoid situation whereby multiple new users (digital scholars at the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences) attending these events are not able to create accounts simply and easily or are not able to run mass edits through Quickstatements. Looking to get attendees practising making manual edits and making mass edits to Wikidata. As per last time, I've created a ticket on Phabricator to see if the IP cap can be lifted temporarily and also left a message for sysadmin on IRC because this is short notice. @Stinglehammer: I'm not an admin, but I am one of the lead organizers of Art+Feminism, so I have confronted this problem before: If you are regularly holding outreach events you should consider applying for Account Creator role, or the soon to be created role, which is designed for exactly this purpose. I don't think AC is widely (if at all) used on Wikidata, but you could potentially apply for them on enwiki and create the accounts on enwiki and they can then use them on Wikidata. --Theredproject (talk) 16:58, 14 May 2018 (UTC)

I'm now pretty sure that user TvOneIndonesia is another sock of Guntur (merges and sitelink swap vandalism). Account was open for 8 month (Oct 2017), doing edits of varying quality but not clearly reproducing the original pattern... until yesterday. Since his/her edit history was not all wrong, maybe just a warning? For sure the last 4 mergers need to be reverted. For info, the last time I dealt with Guntur was in November 2016. Request for creating a new tag for edits made by Wikimedia Commons Android app

As part of #252 we are making P18 edits to the corresponding wikidata entity whenever an image is uploaded to commons. We want to maintain a log of all such edits made using the Wikimedia Commons Android App client.

The recent changes list already tags the edits made by the commons app with Mobile app edit, Mobile edit, but these tags are apparently used by other clients as well. Is it possible to create another tag that just the Commons Android app uses? 1. I told to 77.65.13.26 that these parameters are irrelevant. The info is in the infobox here in case of spanish wiki, but the user insists on placing them. 2. @HernánDávalos13: You seem to be seriously misunderstanding the purpose of Wikidata. Correct information should never be deleted from here, wikidata provides information to *all* language wikipedias, as well as to thousands of other users who don't see this data through a wikipedia at all, so it is totally irrelevant what any one language wikipedia chooses to do with their infoboxes. If the data in wikidata is displaying incorrectly in a particular infobox, then the people managing that infobox need to fix the problem, you cannot fix the problem by editing things in wikidata (unless that data is in fact wrong). Hello. Sorry for my bad english. I received a message in eswiki from HernánDávalos13 to review the changes in this entry. I did a neutral review (even I am not interested in this topic). I did a cleanup of the false parameters and put real data with their respective sources. I have not deleted any data with real references. My changes were:
  1. Added es:aliases «Sin tetas sí hay paraíso», as this is used in Colombia.
  2. Changed “instance of” from «television program» to «television series», because first one caused conflicts with some identifiers.
  3. Changed “genre”, because «television series» is not a valid one, adding «telenarconovela» and «romantic fiction» with external sources.
  4. Added external sources to “original language of work”, “start time”, “production company” and “original network”.
  5. Changed “country of origin” from «Colombia» (country of the original network) and «United States of America» (country of the production company) to only «Colombia» (country of the recording location of the television serie) with an external source.

Well, I think there are no «unnecessary» data in a database. There are true and false information. Maybe Suik 2000 are deleting the data because are false. The page has seen a lot of vandalism lately as Petro is in the running for President of Colombia. He just finished second place yesterday and will be in the upcoming run-off. The page is semi-protected on the Spanish Wikipedia, but the infobox incorporates Wikidata, and the vandalism here has made its way there where it's harder to identify and rectify. -- irn (talk) 15:27, 28 May 2018 (UTC)

Trolls adding Arabic to French

Please note a new vandalistic trend, I have seen three different "new" accounts, all in the past few hours, who have replaced the links for French with Arabic script on 1) "Facebook" 2) "Internet" 3) "Sport".

The accounts who did this are: 1) User:Mazouni oum elaz 2) User:SARRAHAM 3) User:Chahrazed Ait

I reverted the last two myself.

Hello @Mahir256:, ummm they have no edits on ar.wiki, all of edits on fr.wiki. As I see, that we can consider them as good-faith contributions, because, for example, user:SARRAHAM create a redirect from fr:الانترنت to ar:إنترنت then change the label on Wikidata. So, please undo the block and only warn them, any further vandalism after the warning then we can block them, also I hope if CU in frwiki can check them as they have the same pattern of edits. @Arilo91: it is not possible to link page from the main namespace (this is the case with your example on en.wiki) and from user namespace (your case on es.wiki). So you need to move your es.wiki page into the main namespace on es.wiki. To do that, I think you must ask to a sysop on es.wiki; Wikidata cannot do anything for you for now. @Pigsonthewing: While I have no issue with that in practice, I am not sure whether leaving a message on the talk page of a /64 IPv6 subnet (corresponding roughly to a single LAN) renders it visible to all addresses on that subnet, which is especially important since IPv6 addresses within a given subnet are pretty volatile. For example, I see four different IP addresses in the subnet used over two days, meaning if I had left a message on one IP's talk page, there's a close to zero probability that the person wouldn't see it since the person would be using another IP in the subnet.
