Strange to help an aggressive abuser. How much bureaucracy and formalism do we need to delete obvious spam? When strictly appying your understanding of the notability criteria, and an LTA creating "content" sufficiently quickly, it could happen that spam never can be deleted because it is used in some way all the time, Q-item links to commons, and picture on commons i used by the Q-item or a spam page waiting for deletion for the umpteenth time. No, no, no. See here, a discussion is not where you fire back and forth with edit summaries while reverting each other. A discussion is held on a Talk page while you all refrain from editing until an agreement is reached. You haven't even attempted to discuss anything with this IPv4 user, and you're still stubbornly refusing to discuss it with us. This is definitely putting the cart before the horse. Now I've found nothing wrong with this IPv4's.edits.(except the one revert I made) and so until others weigh in with more.compell8ng arguments, I'm going to ask you to stop edit-warring on those items and rather.try to explain yourself in clear,.plain terms. Desde hace tres días este usuario solo edita los elementos del mismo grupo empresario, las descripciones no cumplen con el estilo establecido (lo que agregó hoy es una tremenda publicidad encubierta para esa empresa), tampoco acepta en dejar los aliases que permiten recuperar otras formas de los nombres a lo largo de la historia o las estilizaciones que se hacen en cada lengua. Está borrando todo según su criterio y solo deja lo que le parece, si te fijas en algunos casos con sus modificaciones ya no hay relación con los títulos de los artículos en las diferentes Wikipedias. I blocked Ewa Lipton as a sockpuppet of Matlin per the DUCK test (see also Wikidata:Administrators' noticeboard#User:Ewa_Lipton_is_User:Matlin). They posted a lengthy response in Polish language at User talk:Ewa Lipton. I used a translation service, so I’m not a 100% sure what to make of it but it seems to be some sort of conspiracy theory (?). You know, I'm just a simple country editor, but it flabbergasts me that, since Wikidata eschews a formal bot policy, that a newly-registered editor has no problem racking up over 100,000 edits in the space of a few days, before we can discover and block them. Whether or not these edits are in good faith, it is highly irregular for a brand-new user to bust out of the gates with six digits worth of edits, and it also seems highly probable to me that these are going to be mostly bad edits that someone needs to check through and mass-revert.

Is there any technical means available at our disposal to rate-limit or throttle new accounts in some way that will at least shine a spotlight on their activities? I think a strategic edit filter or two should do it, at least alerting us to the existence of these powerhouses when they first show up. But frankly, I would rather see a technical rate-limit to new users' contributions on the order of what a human is capable of, for about a week until they can be patrolled and vetted by someone around here. This batch is vandalism, adding duplicate items that was deprecated for a good reason. Any idea how to revert them without writing custom script now that KrBot have done the autofix after these edits?

I would like to report disruptive editing by @Flandria12 if I may. User has been lately (I mean for more than 2 months) engaging in disruptive editing in Ingush-related pages, more specifically, changing the descriptions. I will enlist some of them: Fyappiy (despite it being quite literally a consensus in the scientific community that this ethnic group/society is Ingush, he keeps on adding "Chechen"; some examples here, here, here), Troitskaya (despite being warned twice by two different users, @Kaganer and @Ksc~ruwiki, on his talk page that adding "historical details" to the description isn't allowed, he keeps on doing that; examples here, here) Sulumbek of Sagopshi (an Ingush abrek; here he for some reason removed Sulumbek's Ingush ethnicity and didn't explain), Arshty (here changed description to Chechen village and removed mention of Ingushetia, despite the village being in Ingushetia), Chemulga (here he did same thing like in Arshty), Belkharoy (the teip is Ingush according to a number of reliable neutral scholars such as Wimbush, Bennigsen or Gammer, but according to Flandria, no; changing the ethnicity to Chechen here, here, here). I could continue with bringing up many disruptive edits of his but I think this is enough. I should also note, that for some reason, a user who has over 270 000 edits has been engaging in this matter as well, @Takhirgeran Umar, here backing up Flandria12 in making the Orstkhoy "Chechen tukkhum (tribe)" (despite Orstkhoys being present in both nations and some Orstkhoys considering themselves a separate ethnicity from Chechens and Ingush) or in making here a Ingush teip (this opinion is stated by majority, including reliable neutral scholars like Wimbush, Bennigsen, Gammer) Belkharoy Chechen. Overall, I also request adminstrators to protect these pages.

Create new item

I would like to create three new items:

• Module:NUMBEROF/meta
• Module:NUMBEROF/doc
• Template:NUMBEROF/doc

They would be similar to Q94132908 (Module:NUMBEROF/data) and Q7479504 (Template:NUMBEROF). I am receiving an error and was directed to report here it says: "Warn: Links to certain pages, like the one(s) you are trying to add (eg. template documentation subpages), are not allowed in Wikidata. Our notability rules say:

It is permitted for a sitelink to point to a redirect (although the software intentionally makes this difficult),[6][7] but such a link will not count towards establishing notability.

User:ChristianKl, thank you for the explanation. This is unfortunate as I am using a cool tool mw:Synchronizer to keep template/module files synced across 100s of wikis. Synchronizer depends on each file having an entry in Wikidata. So the /doc is a problem since that's a big part of what needs to be synced. Also /meta since that is literally the name of a Lua module, in this case. Is there any way to get an exception, at least, for Module:NUMBEROF/meta? If it's generally useful to have /doc or /meta pages in Wikidata, that would be the place to suggest a change in the rule. Module:NUMBEROF/meta is not a regular meta page, it just shares the name, in this case. We could have called it /feta and there wouldn't be a problem, we just happened to give it a reserved name by accident. I suppose it would be possible to rename it, but this would entail a lot of work to update many modules on many sites. Would it be possible to create an item on Wikidata for this one page as an exception? It's a Lua module the sort of thing we normally have items for.

Adding a redirect wikipedia link

I wanted to add a sitelink for Q3148063 to a Hebrew Wikipedia redirect page that I created, לו הייתי רוטשילד, but the software wouldn't let me add it with an "intentional sitelink to redirect" badge. It says:

Upon further inspection, the edits that added images are a lot more than I first thought (stopped counting at 5k). I think this might be an interesting case to be investigated by a CU. There might be more connected socks, like Preeze. I don't think your idea of protection and stripping is too radical. The user more or less has solely been dedicated to uploading vectorizations of logos, several of which are based on copyrighted raster files, and then adding them across various wikis (including Wikidata). c:Commons:Requests for checkuser/Case/Moonrivers has a fairly decent summary of the behavioral reasons linking the accounts together with the IPs (it's the same pattern of use to add vectorizations created by the sockmaster to Wikidata, among other places).

I'm filing here, rather than requesting CU, because the two accounts are already confirmed to one another, and because CUs can't confirm IP information publicly. Wikidata:Sockpuppetry states Creating an account just to joke around with, or just to have an alternate account... is still considered an illegitimate use of alternate accounts. The policy also states that, if acts would be considered to be illegitimate use if multiple accounts were used, using an IP address... will also be treated as an illegitimate use. As such, given that there doesn't appear to be cause for the use of multiple accounts here, this appears to the the illegitimate use of alternative accounts and IPs to edit on Wikidata. — Red-tailed hawk _(nest) 15:52, 21 September 2023 (UTC)

I'm not 100% sure he's the same disruptive IP, but his actions are literally the same; see also this discussion on my talk page. • I deleted Q121295037 because it was an item not meeting the notability criteria; it did not have sitelinks (anymore), no references, no external identifiers, no structural need. There was furthermore a BLP issue with the English description. I usually delete of the order of 1000 such items per week—we have plenty of similar cases, way more than we can discuss. Down the rabbit hole

Examined closer the user who recently had his share of fun defacing this page. He or she knows the internet well. The first service provider he used explicitly permitted VPN servers and had in total over 1000 IP ranges available, although presumably not all of those were dedicated to hosting or private VPN use. This was a big global provider. The next one was an obscure low-cost cloud provider which does does advertise allowing private VPNs, so I'm not sure they permit this. Not sure why he switched ISPs though, as the first one had truly enormous IP-ranges available which would have been a PITA to manually confirm and block.

Plugging the holes in a colander doesn't make it water-tight. It's a waste of admin effort to block single IPs if it can be reliably determined that the IP-range is exclusively used for hosting services or VPNs. It is extremely rare that these ranges have any legitimate usage, and in the case it does they can edit logged in. Amazon Web Services are consistently blocked globally under the open proxy policy and it should be no different for IP-ranges known to be used exclusively for hosting services and similar. @Infrastruktur: How would I go about determining the full range that can be blocked in these cases? I always block the /64 for IPv6 (and generally block the /24 for IPv4), but I'm wondering if I should do other checks to ensure I am covering the full range allocated to the hosting provider. –FlyingAce^✈hello 02:57, 29 September 2023 (UTC)

In normal circumstances I try to block as little as possible since range-blocks will typically affect innocent people as well. The blocking page has a link to a range calculator which is nice to use to determine the smallest effective range for a block.

Querying a WHOIS database with the IP address usually returns an "inetnum" object first, one or more "roles" and typically also a "route" object. The inetnum object represents a contigous range of addresses that the IP address is part of. The routing object represents as the name suggest the routing block associated with the address. These ranges might be different, but they will overlap.

Having a look a look at the whois information for 45.12.222.43 you see that both ranges are the same - 24 bits for the network part, which leaves 8 bits for the hosts, so 2^8 = 256 possible addresses.

A lot of different IP addresses was messing with the Administrator's noticeboard page, but again looking at the WHOIS you see that they all use the same provider M247 Ltd. but located in different geographical places. Having a look at the provider's webpage we can see which kinds of services they offer which is a lot, everything from hosting to internet backhaul. They also have a lot of big VPN providers as customers which explains their policy with regards to VPNs. They do appear to offer connectivity to companies but not to private customers, this is why I think it should be fine to block any of the providers' ranges in their entirety for at least a year where there is abuse. Report concerning User:Flandria12

I would like to report disruptive editing by @Flandria12 if I may. User has been lately (I mean for more than 2 months) engaging in disruptive editing in Ingush-related pages, more specifically, changing the descriptions. I will enlist some of them: Fyappiy (despite it being quite literally a consensus in the scientific community that this ethnic group/society is Ingush, he keeps on adding "Chechen"; some examples here, here, here), Troitskaya (despite being warned twice by two different users, @Kaganer and @Ksc~ruwiki, on his talk page that adding "historical details" to the description isn't allowed, he keeps on doing that; examples here, here) Sulumbek of Sagopshi (an Ingush abrek; here he for some reason removed Sulumbek's Ingush ethnicity and didn't explain), Arshty (here changed description to Chechen village and removed mention of Ingushetia, despite the village being in Ingushetia), Chemulga (here he did same thing like in Arshty), Belkharoy (the teip is Ingush according to a number of reliable neutral scholars such as Wimbush, Bennigsen or Gammer, but according to Flandria, no; changing the ethnicity to Chechen here, here, here). I could continue with bringing up many disruptive edits of his but I think this is enough. I should also note, that for some reason, a user who has over 270 000 edits has been engaging in this matter as well, @Takhirgeran Umar, here backing up Flandria12 in making the Orstkhoy "Chechen tukkhum (tribe)" (despite Orstkhoys being present in both nations and some Orstkhoys considering themselves a separate ethnicity from Chechens and Ingush) or in making here a Ingush teip (this opinion is stated by majority, including reliable neutral scholars like Wimbush, Bennigsen, Gammer) Belkharoy Chechen. Overall, I also request adminstrators to protect these pages.

It's not a simple topic because it relates to a local inter-ethnic conflict - Chechen and Ingush people are both closely related Vainakh enthnicities who may have different views on origins of specific tribes, cultural aspects, and so on. I could've restore the (presumably) correct versions and semi-protect the pages but I'm afraid of being involved into a conflict I have nothing to do with. I would like to ask/find somebody who has a special interest in the Vainakh history - maybe Simba16 could help us with a neutral reviewing of the edits above? Even if someone isn't familiar with the topic, it's clear that atleast Flandria12's editing in Troitskaya, Arshty and Chemulga is disruptive editing - removing information that the rural localities are currently located in Ingushetia and adding unnecessary historical details from 1920-1930s instead - he was warned by two Russian speaking editor's already about this behavior, but instead continued doing this. In wiki, we base our views on reliable and neutral sources so I don't think a wiki editor's personal opinions decides which tribes become Chechen and which become Ingush. If needed, I can provide reliable and neutral sources regarding the Ingush ethnicity of Belkharoy and Sulumbek of Sagopshi; Orstkhoys are a mixed tribe (for example Sulumbek was an Ingush Orstkho while Dzhokhar Dudaev was a Chechen Orstkho) with some even seeing themselves as a separate Vainakh unit (if needed I can provide neutral RS for this). Furthermore, I don't really think Simba16 would be the right person to ask - we have had some arguments with him in Wikipedia and, as he's Chechen, there would be definitely some bias on the Orstkhoys for example, as of course there would be some bias if you had asked an Ingush user to give his insight on the matter. At best, these links may show the notability of Jon Morgan (the CEO of V.S.), who is presented there as an expert.

@Leadspringllc: For me two these newer sources are not much better than previous ones. Also, the sentence like "To know more about LLC and how to bring out the best in building your own luxurious hotel, visit Venture Smarter as they provide intel and business consultation." is clearly advertising. The company should not be necessary covered by Forbes, Fortune, or BusinessWeek, we would just like to see e.g. an article which is completely dedicated to Venture Smarter, or at least an article which contains a significant information about the company and clearly describes its main activity.
