Bulk deletion request: Ambiguous Crossref journal stubs

Someone bulk added (what they thought was) journals from a uncleaned Crossref dump. This was highly problematic as some of the resulting new items only included a title (these are often not unique), the Crossref journal ID (which is only an internal id that is not openly resolvable), and the statement "item is a scientific journal" (which is in many cases wrong).

Items with an internal Crossref id as their only identifier (and no other identifiers like ISSN or DOI) are a big problem: As the Crossref ids are internal there is no efficient and reliable way of applying these items (e.g. adding other identifiers) as a Wikidata editor.

And even worse, these items are usually of the lowest quality: Crossref is a DOI registry, so if there was no DOI (or ISSN) available in the Crossref data set, there is a high likelihood that there is a problem with what is identified in the first place, eg. these journals were planned, but not published in the end (or not published yet), they are duplicates (there are more than 20 Crossref ids [and thereby Q ids] for the same journal in the query alone), or they are no journals at all (e.g. there are even articles in the mix).

Here a SPARQL query ("items that have the internal Crossref id as their only external identifier") showing all of the items that are included in my request for deletion (3052 items at the time of writing this). Only the items in this query are part of the bulk deletion request: https://w.wiki/wyN

I checked that there are no relevant backlinks (Special:WhatLinksHere) to any of these items. That means Wikidata will definitely be a better place if all of these items are deleted. --Okami (talk) 10:30, 31 January 2021 (UTC)

@GZWDer: for your info --- Jura 14:53, 31 January 2021 (UTC)
Leaning for   Delete as we cannot improve this item. For instance, on Insight Turkey (Q96709518), there is said to be the same as (P460) = Insight Turkey (Q6038114) but we have no way of knowing if it's indeed the same journal or not. Cdlt, VIGNERON (talk) 14:58, 31 January 2021 (UTC)
I agree! This looks like a massive dump of completely unverifiable information. Alright that you detected this, @Okami! --Dick Bos (talk) 16:35, 31 January 2021 (UTC)
There is a DOI for Q96709618, and it redirects to the same URL as the DOI for Q6038114. The only difference is for Q96709618 the ISSNs are missing and the DOI has an additional ".2020221" at the end - not sure of the purpose of that unless it's to link a specific issue or article. There is https://www.insightturkey.com/issues/2020/22/1 but the DOI doesn't redirect to that. Peter James (talk) 18:30, 31 January 2021 (UTC)
Q96704985, Q96704988, Q96704990 can be deleted as the Crossref data just says "Deleted". Peter James (talk) 18:38, 31 January 2021 (UTC)
Some of these can be improved, for example Landscape Architecture (Q96724106) is not the same as Landscape Architecture (Q96331023). Was there a reason the DOIs were not added? Peter James (talk) 19:05, 31 January 2021 (UTC)
Thx @Dick Bos! :) --Okami (talk) 20:08, 31 January 2021 (UTC)
@Peter James: Some of these could in deed be improved theoretically. I started with this task in mind actually. But I soon realized that this was not a useful task for anyone to invest in. By the way: The examples that you give (Landscape Architecture (Q96724106) and Landscape Architecture (Q96331023)) are not in the list of items that I suggested for deletion (no problem there as they do contain additional external identifiers like ISSN). --Okami (talk) 20:08, 31 January 2021 (UTC)
There are also some entries in Crossref with "Crossref Test" as publisher - I made a list at User:Peter James/8. Some were added to existing items, others are new, and some of the new items combine other sources and have the "test" title from Crossref as the label and the correct title in statements. These identifiers should probably be deprecated, but some appear to have valid data - what should I use as the reason for deprecation? Others have been added where Crossref has no data, for example "60429" was added to Q14293915 but Crossref has "Test deposits" with ISSN 11111111. Peter James (talk) 22:19, 31 January 2021 (UTC)
Interesting! That means this data import was even more problematic than I thought. To be honest, this request here is also a test balloon for requesting the deletion of Crossref journal ID (P8375) in the next step. This ID is treated as an internal ID even by Crossref itself. [1] That is probably why there is no public resolver for this ID (which is actually called "publication ID" in their documentation). For Crossref itself the proper IDs to search and resolve for are ISSNs and of course DOIs. I am interested in your thoughts about this. As I see it: An external non-public identifier is hard to maintain for the Wikidata community (there are probably a lot of faulty claims already). As this is an *internal ID of the Crossref system* only, there is not even a real use cases for this property. In my opinion it makes little sense for the Wikidata Community to maintain that property. But first I would like to see how step 1 goes (this request for deletion). --Okami (talk) 23:32, 31 January 2021 (UTC)
Of those items I found 28 items that can be deleted as they only refer to test data; the list is at User:Peter James/8#Delete and includes four where ISSNs are in the data but are not valid or have not been issued. Peter James (talk) 00:38, 1 February 2021 (UTC)
I have made separate deletion requests for these 28 items[2]. Peter James (talk) 23:44, 1 March 2021 (UTC)
All Crossref entries are imported based on a request at Wikidata:Bot_requests/Archive/2020/07#Crossref_Journals. Feel free to delete any of these if there are no valid articles in Crossref referring to that journal ID.--GZWDer (talk) 09:00, 1 February 2021 (UTC)
Thank you for the link to that discussion @GZWDer! From what I read there the original intent was to (only) include journals that have an ISSN associated to them. This makes a lot of sense. My request here is to delete only those items without publicly resolvable identifiers. All imported journals that include ISSN, DOI or other identifiers were not included in my request for deletion (see query above). --Okami (talk) 10:12, 1 February 2021 (UTC)
Crossref provided a list of entries that is used as source of import. Another issue is there are a Mix'n'Match catalog and errorous ISNIs may be added to Wikidata via this catalog (such as the Q14293915 example above). Luckily the match is mostly complete.--GZWDer (talk) 17:09, 1 February 2021 (UTC)
I see one entry (Birds of the World (Q96696556)) which has a sitelink, and hence should be excluded from bulk deletion. Bovlb (talk) 18:16, 25 April 2021 (UTC)
Done for those items in the query with instance of (P31) scientific journal (Q5633421) (there are 21 items without that P31 that I'm not touching just yet; @Bovlb, VIGNERON, GZWDer, Dick Bos, Peter James: if you could assess those). Mahir256 (talk) 18:10, 29 June 2021 (UTC)

Invalid lexeme. Meaning of combibnation of words is not different from the literal meaning. Bodhisattwa (talk) 02:53, 10 April 2021 (UTC)

  •   Keep In my opinion, this lexeme is not a random combination of words. There is a Wikipedia article on this . Additionally, there are scientific articles using this lexeme, as seen on Internet Archive Scholar (than 300 articles). A search on Google (with quotes ""), for example currently gives more than 75,000 articles, whereas a search for "Red sea ice decline" returns 0 results. Personally, I feel that such combination of words cannot be considered as invalid. Some languages, especially minority languages may not use 'word economy'. An item like shame of flying (Q59564056) has Occitan translation 'Vergonha de prene l'avion', French translation 'honte de prendre l'avion', English translation 'shame of flying', whereas languages like German (Flugscham), Swedish (flygskam) have only one word. Many of the labels of this item use combinations of words and their meanings are not different from the literal meaning. Articles can already be found in the respective local language newspapers using these long combinations. John Samuel (talk) 06:48, 10 April 2021 (UTC).
  •   Comment "Red sea ice decline" has no results because the Red Sea (Q23406) is a tropical sea that never had any ice! Note that there are numerous results if you substitute other polar bodies of water: "Antarctic sea ice decline", "Barents sea ice decline", "Chukchi sea ice decline" 73.170.147.86 00:16, 24 June 2021 (UTC)
It's interesting that both @Jsamwrites, Jura1: somehow found the word "random" hidden in the depths of Bodhisattwa's request rationale and addressed that, rather than addressing the "whole not more than the sum of its parts" argument that he did actually present. Mahir256 (talk) 15:32, 14 May 2021 (UTC)
There wasn't much provided to support the deletion request either .. I think the question should probably be if it's a term (multi-word name of a concept) or a phrase that is attested somewhere. When we do have an item with that label, there generally is. --- Jura 16:13, 14 May 2021 (UTC)

Delete This is not a proper noun describing a specific model or event. Rather it's a general phenomenon that is completely described by the component words. There's no need for this as a lexeme. I realize in some languages there may be a single word for such a thing, so that's fine, but it's not so in English. ArthurPSmith (talk) 15:53, 11 June 2021 (UTC)

there's a good number of references and identifiers here that identify them uniquely. I think it's marginal but they do seem to be notable enough. Please note that this doesn’t mean that the person, company or product described by the item isn’t important; it just means that it might not be a suitable item within Wikidata at this moment. Doesn't meet the notability criteria. No sitelinks, internal links or external IDs. The only reference is an unreliable website where anyone can get their biography published. And the creator of the item has the same name as that website. Kam Solusar (talk) 19:55, 11 May 2021 (UTC)

Doesn't meet the notability criteria. No sitelinks, internal links, external IDs or references. The "described at URL" statement leads to a website that is not considered a reliable source. Kam Solusar (talk) 01:54, 12 May 2021 (UTC)

    • I'm not sure numbers of subscribers alone are enough to make a social media account notable, especially since subscribers can easily be bought. --Kam Solusar (talk) 19:35, 16 May 2021 (UTC)
      • @Kam Solusar: Personally, I think the question is more how many than if. When working on mixnmatch:3804, I used 1M as benchmark. Admittedly, Twitter is somewhat different (Twitter profiles are more public than Instagram's) and I'm not particularly interested in Instagram, nor do I have any idea how much it would cost to buy them if that is possible. --- Jura 08:55, 17 May 2021 (UTC)
        • @Jura1: I guess my views of such things are heavily influenced by my past work on Wikipedia. Where it wasn't uncommon to see social media personalities who created promotional articles for themselves arguing that their high subscriber numbers alone make them notable. But in too many cases, those high numbers didn't result in any meaningful coverage in serious sources. Which is why I'm now hesitant to rely on such numbers alone. --Kam Solusar (talk) 13:00, 18 May 2021 (UTC)
        • I understand the Wikipedia problem. --- Jura 10:55, 23 May 2021 (UTC)
Delete To quote WD:N #2: “The entity must be notable, in the sense that it can be described using serious and publicly available references.”. I couldn’t find any serious and publicly available references other than the profile itself and minor user-generated information. --Emu (talk) 11:16, 23 May 2021 (UTC)
The number of subscribers can be described with a serious and publicly available reference. --- Jura 12:02, 23 May 2021 (UTC)
That depends on the definition of “serious”. In any case, if we accept this criterion, then there is nothing to prevent us from accepting every social media identifier as evidence of notability. Why should there be a difference because of an arbitrary threshold of the number of subscribers, be it one million or one? --Emu (talk) 13:26, 23 May 2021 (UTC)
The reference is for the number of subscribers, not the identifier. It seems obvious that, e.g. a newspaper with 1 reader is not notable, whereas one with high number is. --- Jura 14:12, 23 May 2021 (UTC)
Hm. We would certainly include any newspaper with only one reader if it’s included in any serious publication (say, an encyclopedia). It’s certainly unlikely for a newspaper but not totally unthinkable. --Emu (talk) 18:04, 23 May 2021 (UTC)
And the one with a high number of readers, but not described in a tertiary source (encyclopedia)? --- Jura 07:12, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
Doesn’t need to be a tertiary source (although this would certainly be ideal), not even a secondary source, if at least one independent primary source exists. And I don’t see that in this case. Which btw is curious as most big social media accounts get at least some minor coverage in local newspapers over the years. --Emu (talk) 12:08, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
So the newspaper should be included? --- Jura 13:14, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
About which newspaper are we talking about? Is it still a hypothetical one? --Emu (talk) 17:48, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
Any with a high number of readers (where the readership isn't determined by the editorial staff themselves). --- Jura 07:45, 28 May 2021 (UTC)

Delete All of the above. None of them is notable (maybe hoax?). Worrida (talk) 01:01, 23 June 2021 (UTC)

Yes, it is possible that all of the above is a hoax. Especially because of the name of the company (NONAME) is suspicious. It literally means the same as the statement  . So my guess is that all of the above must be deleted due to being a very elaborate hoax with a film company saying a statement that states its opposite within itself, as in this example. I guess this is one of the most elaborate hoaxes of Hungarian Wikipedia. Alfa-ketosav (talk) 21:59, 24 June 2021 (UTC)
