Parenthèses

Bonjour,

-Ash Crow (talk) 16:42, 29 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

What do you mean with P580

edit

For example [1], what do you mean with start time (P580)? begin date of what? Normally P580 should be used as qualifier to indicate the start date of something defined. For creation date, rather use inception (P571) or service entry (P729). Michiel1972 (talk) 15:25, 20 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Duplicates

edit

Hi, thanks for marking duplicated items, but when both items can be merged it is much better than adding "instance of Wikimedia duplicated page (Q17362920)". Q17362920 is only for the case when there are sitelinks to the same Wikipedia in two languages so that we cannot merge items. -15:23, 11 November 2014 (UTC)~

Parliament Q35749 = P31:Q167037?

edit

Hello DavidMar86hdf. Sorry for my bad google english. Why do you set for Parliament Q35749 - P31:Q167037 - Corporation?

Hello,

thank you for comment. I think, here we have a Problem of Translation. The Item you mentioned has the german Item-Title "Körperschaft" Körperschaft has a broad meaning. I am not a Lawyer, so can not explain its exact definition. In Germany we have some kinds of "Körperschaft" which are not comparable with Corporation in its classical definition. Corporation is more connected to business. Körperschaft can also include entities state actors, For example, our municipalities or cities (or other actors of separation of powers: Courts, government organizations or parliamentary organizations)

As I said, I am not a Lawyer but that was my thinking behind it.

Requests for deletion

edit

Hi, I notice you always remove everything from an item before proposing it for deletion. Items don't need to be blanked before they can be deleted (as far as I'm aware!), so you shouldn't need to do that, it's just more work for you. It also makes it harder to check (for me at least) whether it should be deleted or not (often they can be merged, sometimes they can/should be linked from other items) because you have to dig around in the history to see what data was there originally and if we do think it is notable, or that it can be merged and had some information we wanted to keep, the edits have to be undone first. I think it would be better for everyone to just propose the items as they are. :) - Nikki (talk) 21:04, 14 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

thank you for your comment, good to know that DavidMar86hdf (talk) 17:51, 15 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

Could you please stop adding the link to the history to your nomination reason. The link to the article in the DR already contains a link to the history and it breaks the setting of the deletion reason when an admin clicks the link "delete". Mbch331 (talk) 14:22, 21 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

Sorry for that, I only wanted to help. Thank you for comment.

--DavidMar86hdf (talk) 14:30, 21 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

I noticed you were using "no link to Wikipedia" as a reason to delete an item. This can never be a valid reason to delete an item. Items without a link to Wikipedia can still be notable. In this case there was no information to show the notability and the linked article was deleted. There were no incoming links, so it wasn't notable. Please use a better description in the future. Mbch331 (talk) 16:25, 12 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

topic's main category (P910)

edit

Hi again :) I think you've misunderstood what topic's main category (P910) is for (the wording is confusing (in English at least) so I can see why). It's not designed for linking to the category that the item belongs to (that is already implied by instance of (P31) and subclass of (P279)), it's for linking to the category which has the same meaning (it's the inverse of category's main topic (P301), so if X has topic's main category (P910) Y, then Y should have category's main topic (P301) X).

For example on Bellamy Bach (Q4883450), you had added topic's main category (P910) Category:Collective pseudonyms (Q6510810) which I removed, because that statement belongs on collective pseudonym (Q16017119). If there were an item for a Bellamy Bach category (probably called "Category:Bellamy Bach"), then that would be the right thing to link using topic's main category (P910).

- Nikki (talk) 02:17, 23 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for that comment.

P1080 and P1441

edit

Please, do not add P:1080 with works like in this. from narrative universe (P1080) should be used with fictional universes (see the constraints and the talk page). It's present in work (P1441) that should be used for indicate in which work the item appears. I corrected it but I would appreciate if you are more careful next time. Both P1080 and P1441 have 0 constraints violations in value now and I hope it can remain so. Many thanks! --Harmonia Amanda (talk) 18:15, 25 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hi DavidMar86hdf,

please add "given name" (Q202444) and "family name" (Q101352) only to items made for such names. Sample: John (Q4925477)

"David Burke" is the full name a several persons, not a first name, nor a family name. The same goes for a series of other items you add this recently. --- Jura 05:31, 19 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

All linked articles have been deleted

edit

Do you ever check the history of an item before nominating items with the reason All linked articles have been deleted? If so the text Removed link to [[xxwiki]] doesn't mean an article was deleted. It only means that a user removed the sitelink. This is something that often happens with bad merges. They don't merge, but remove the link and add it to another item. In those cases it's a question of finding out where the link was added and merge those items. If User:Hoo Bot removes a sitelink, then you can be certain the article was deleted, but only in that case. If you actually check what happend to the link and perform the merge yourself, that would safe us time for doing other things that actually are more useful. Thank you for your comment and your information. Now I know better to deal with the matter.

Wrong mergers

edit

Hi, please by more careful with the merge game. I've just checked 4 of your recent ones, and three were wrong. --Zolo (talk) 15:41, 24 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your comment.

I try my best to avoid wrong merges (I play the "merge-game" from the distributed games series). I think the game offers enough information to make the right decisions. If it does not, I can not play

--DavidMar86hdf (talk) 15:56, 24 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

I have sometimes played that merge game. It is not always easy to know for sure that two items should be merged. It can be especially tricky for location/administrative units, where things are often more complex than first meets the eye. Checking properties like foundation date or external identifiers is often a good idea too. For instance, following ISSN links, you can see clearly that Moyen Age (Q15765775) and Le Moyen Âge (Q15766195) are not the same (different dates, different publishing location). Given that wrong merges are often hard to spot, and can create real issues, it sounds reasonable to use the "not sure" option generously. --Zolo (talk) 18:23, 24 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

I use the "not sure" option mostly in the game. May it is a good idea that the identifiers are displayed on the game ( in the trad. Wikidata game this is the case I think)

--DavidMar86hdf (talk) 18:39, 24 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Ok but it seems that you still need to be more careful with your matchings. I went through all of your PSS-archi ID (P1838) mix'n'match edts, as I found out that there was an error rate of something like 20 or 30%. Better do less of them, but carefully enough that it does not need to be done twice. --Zolo (talk) 09:00, 25 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
This merge is also wrong: https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q3988497&diff=287087104&oldid=168926198. One is an album by James, one by Hooverphonic. M!dgard (talk) 10:18, 25 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Invitation to Wikidata user study

edit

Dear DavidMar86hdf,
I am a researcher of the Web and Internet Science group of the University of Southampton.
Together with a group of other researchers from the same University, we are currently conducting a research aiming to discover how newcomers become full participants into the Wikidata community. We are interested in understanding how the usage of tools, the relationships with the community, and the knowledge and application of policy norms change from users' first approach to Wikidata to their full integration as fully active participants.
This study will take place as an interview, either by videotelephony, e.g. Skype, phone, or e-mail, according to the preference of the interviewees. The time required to answer all the questions will likely be about an hour. Further information can be found on the Research Project Page Becoming Wikidatians: evolution of participation in a collaborative structured knowledge base.
Any data collected will be treated in the strictest confidentiality, no personal information will be processed for the purpose of the research. The study, which has submission number 20117, has received ethical approval following the University of Southampton guidelines.
We aim at gathering about 20 participants, chosen among experienced Wikidata users who authored a large number of contributions.
Should you be interested in taking part or wish to receive further information, you can contact us by writing to the e-mail address ap1a14+wikidata_user_study@ecs.soton.ac.uk.
Thank you very much, your help will be much appreciated!

Locator maps in Thailand

edit

edit

Not sure why you added 'unknown value' to the Country of Citizenship for John Murray, 1st Earl of Annandale (Q18527375) diff. He's clearly born in Scotland of Scottish parents & hence would have been a citizen of the Kingdom of Scotland. Per his en.wiki article, he was naturalised as an English citizen in 1610. Unless values are indubitably unknown, it tends to be better not to add 'unknown value'. --Tagishsimon (talk) 16:37, 12 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Salut David. Genium. 22:45, Nov 30, 2019 (UTC+02:00)

Bonjour ! En 2017, vous avez indiqué que Marcus Claudius Marcellus (Q4281785)said to be the same as (P460)Marcus Claudius Marcellus (Q6758092).

Cork (Q36647) merged into Q12825207

edit

Hi DavidMar86hdf

I noticed you merged Cork (Q36647) into Q12825207.

The default is to merge into Q36647 especially as more than 1000 uses seem to be of that item and only 2 of the other.

Apparently you did that in other cases [2] too. I think Help:Merge recommends the opposite.

Is there a reason why you unchecked the option "Always merge into the older entity (uncheck to merge into the "Merge with" entity)"? --- Jura 08:25, 26 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hello,

thank you for your Input. I did not know that. I hope I did not to much wrong?

Thanks for your support.

Concepts and terms

edit

Hi. Please note that Wikidata items as well as Wikipedia articles generally are about concepts not terms (i.e. lexicographical data that should be treated differently). Concepts and terms are distinct, single concept may be denoted by multiple terms, and single term may denote multiple concepts. Hence we shouldn't really presume that items like Q11800704 and Q12311620 and are about terms. Moreover I see no reason to think that these concepts are specific to particular language just because there happens to be sitelink in one language. Even if no other language truely doesn't have corresponding term, then language is about the term and not about the concept that it denotes. In many cases like "Fojait" rock you apparetly fill in English/German label based on sitelink language, despite the fact that it's easy to find corresponding terms in other languages (in this case for foyaite). This indicates that you simply don't know corresponding terms in other languages. Please avoid creating such confusion and leave such items to other users who are familiar with the concept and can read Wikipedia article in relevant language. 2001:7D0:81F7:B580:D8F5:3846:16A3:B358 08:08, 11 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hello DavidMar86hdf, could you clarify the English description of Q9306086 and consider adding the subclass of (P279) adverb Q380057 if relevant. Every help to improve the list of Parts of Speech is good to take :) Yug (talk) 16:14, 11 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

unknown value in coordinate location

edit

Hallo David, I stumble over a lot of unknown value for coordinate location (P625) of places entered by you - examples: Keçeli (Q6924278), Dazcana (Q6934461), Izdara (Q6967448). What is your source for those coodinates? The place names are all from kuwiki... --Katpatuka (talk) 08:31, 11 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

"Driver" in azwiki

edit

Hi David,

I've wanted to get rid of the duplicate articles about device driver (Q1033951) in Azeri Wikipedia.

Sadly creating a redirect at https://az.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=S%C3%BCr%C3%BCc%C3%BC&action=edit is maliciously classified as "page blanking".

May you please help me when you also think the shorter article could be redirected? Regards, --Magic Ruickbie (talk) 20:24, 8 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

P31 and P279

edit

Please avoid using both P31 and P279 in an item, unless P31 value is a metaclass like ship type (Q2235308). E.g. seat (Q2207370) and stool (Q33163) are both classes of physical objects (neither is metaclass), and Schegn (Q13212356) in turn cannot be type of physical object (class) and a concrete physical object (instance) at the same time (as set here). German

edit

Bonjour David,

your German is very good, but there are a few traditions originating from the German Wikipedia. Please don't add suffixes like , geboren 1871 (Vladimir Benak (Q95281701)) to German descriptions.-- Jackie Bensberg (talk) 15:36, 30 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

technical term

edit

Hi there. I see you are the primary adder of technical term (Q12812139) to many items. I am interested in removing all the instance of (P31) technical term (Q12812139) statements for items that represent concepts and not vocabulary words. The current addition of this statement makes items conflate the two things. There's also the fact that if an item represents a word, it should probably be a lexeme and not an item. Finally instance of (P31) technical term (Q12812139) should not be an statement on most items since technical term (Q12812139) is not a metaclass. Does this sound good to you?   Hello, I'm Eihel. I wanted to let you know that one or more of your recent description edits to Q15987216 didn't meet the Wikidata description guidelines. Descriptions should appear as though they were in the middle of a sentence, typically start with a lowercase letter, and written from a neutral point of view. For example, "pop singer" would be a better description than "He is the best pop singer." If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thanks!  Eihel (talk) 01:31, 14 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hi, can I ask what you are basing your addition of "Finnish" on when adding this property to items? For example, you added "Finnish" on this author's item, yet she is a Swedish-speaking Finn. - Yupik (talk) 18:51, 19 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

AN discussion

edit

There is a discussion at Wikidata:Administrators'_noticeboard#User:DavidMar86hdf that would benefit from your input.

Also, I note that you do not appear to respond to feedback. This is an important part of participation in the Wikidata project. Bovlb (talk) 17:42, 28 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your remark.
I do respond to feedback if I now what to say.
Is there a rule that says what appropriate communication should look like on this platform? I just want to pass the time here.
best regards DavidMar86hdf (talk) 19:33, 2 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
If you don't know understand feedback, that's something you can say, and ask for clarification. If you accept the feedback and resolve to do better in future, that's also something you can say. If you reject the feedback, you can say that too, preferably with an explanation of why.
I see dozens of instances of feedback here, going back ten years, and this appears to be the first time ever that you have responded. This is below the level of responsiveness that we expect from editors. Bovlb (talk) 00:32, 3 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for the clarification. That wasn't meant badly at all. Of course, I try to accept and implement criticism. Maybe I react a little sensitively when the word “expectation” is used against me. I'm trying to contribute here to the best of my knowledge and belief. and yes, maybe I'm not as responsive as you'd expect.
Best regards DavidMar86hdf (talk) 23:15, 3 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
You do the same mistakes over and over, I'd say in about every other item. This is why it seems that you simply ignore the feedback. Over time I've also reverted numerous edits of your, providing further commentary in edit summaries. Maybe you have disabled notifications and so you don't receive these additional comments? In case you have disabled notification, I let you know here that I responded to your last comment at the administrators' noticeboard. 2001:7D0:81DB:1480:D034:69CB:B488:2999 08:22, 3 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Descriptions in Wikidata

edit

Please note that descriptions in English and other languages (including Danish) generally should begin with a lower case letter, not be longer than 8-12 words and should not normally begin with initial articles (a, an, the): Help:Description#Capitalization. In the same way Danish descriptions should not begin with "er en " or similar. Hjart (talk) 20:38, 4 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
