sex/gender being assigned to anything with a given name in the label

Hi there! There is a script being run the last couple of days that assigns sex or gender and given name to seemingly any items containing a (male) given name in the label. This includes music albums with a name in the title, singles, discograhies, other (double) names, double (patronymic) surnames, etc. I have tried to contact the editor but so far they haven't responded and the script continues (see https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/User_talk:%26beer%26love ). The editor's name is red, so I'm not sure they actually get the messages. Is there a way to stop this, or at least make the script runner aware, so they can fix the script? @Tagishsimon: Moebeus (talk) 15:15, 1 May 2019 (UTC)

Yup. It's @&beer&love:, who uses Petscan. &beer&love does an enormous amount of wikidata work, and issues arising, though annoying, are IMO on the margins. (Although equally that view may be because I only look in places where the issues are not.) From a previous interaction, &beer&love is not the best at communicating, but their heart is in the right place and I hope they'll join us soon, here or on their talk page. Right now &beer&love is running a Petscan over people with ORCID IDs, from their local machine, I think. My hope is that a) &beer&love will start talking - they may well be away from their machine right now; they certainly get messages despite having no user page; and b) that we can work with &beer&love to work out how to b1) minimise issues arising and b1) put in place e.g. petscans which can be used to recognise and remediate issues that are arising. So by way of example, checks in &beer&love's petscans to determine that an item is not linked to an article which is in Category:Albums would perhaps assist in ending mistaken codings of items based on the article also being in a subcategory of one of the list of humans categories. --Tagishsimon (talk) 15:31, 1 May 2019 (UTC)

I certainly don't think it's done in bad faith, but it still creates some problems unfortunately. Small update: It seems the the script is looking for items beginning with a male given name (from a list on male given names, I assume), followed by another word. Yup. Their selection algorithm in the example Miguel Ríos discography (Q62481380) sucks, given that it had a P31 clearly specifying that it was a discography. --Tagishsimon (talk) 15:49, 1 May 2019 (UTC)

Can any one start discussion about user name policy

We do not have one, and I am not sure whether we need one. Is there a current case which we should have a look at?

Be aware that this is a "global" project. My IRL last name is offensive in Russian, my IRL first name is confusing in American and my username here contains both the words "sex" and "sju". I do not have to explain the potential problems with "sex" but if I pronounce the word "sju" aloud to a Russian, he starts to laugh. I do not know why, but it happens every time. I can assure you that in my native language, Swedish, none of this is neither offensive or confusing. "sex" is simply the Swedish word for 6 and "sju" simply means 7. My username simply tells "62.20.170.74". If you hear two Swedes talk about "Q31928", they are probably discussing the labor union (Q178790), not necessarily something offensive. Once I saw a program about a place in South America. Many people there had the name "Kuk". Kuk in Swedish describes the male genitalia and is used as F*** is in American. If you block somebody here only because you do not understand their username, it could affect their ability to move pages in Wikipedia et al. ┌────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘ Considering the mixed response to Wikidata:Requests for comment/Adopt a username policy, and the practical issues of enforcing a local username policy at Wikidata, I think it would be more productive to propose a global username policy. w:en:Template:UsernamePolicy (the summary itself, not the full text) could be a good start, although it would have to reflect the reality that some usernames may only be considered acceptable at particular wikis and may be locally blocked at others (e.g. if your username represents your non-profit organization, Wikidata would allow it but many large Wikipedias wouldn't). Misleading usernames

Disruptive usernames

Usernames that allude to hacking, trolling, vandalism, legal threats, or computer malware (viruses, spyware etc...). Usernames that include profanity, or obscenities, or references to genitalia or sexual slang. Promotional usernames: Usernames that match the name of a company or group, if the user is using the account as a promotional tool. Confusing usernames:Usernames that are very similar to the name of another Wikibooks user and might cause confusion. @Tropp100: I've collapsed your previous comment because it's really long and I'm not sure what your point is. I don't know why you would want it, given that you're a new user with six edits across the Wikimedia projects, but you're not going to get a username policy through discussion on this page (this page is mainly to notify administrators of disruption or other issues that can only be resolved by administrators), and there is already an open request for comment on creating a username policy. Hello!

I have added a new article which describes Richard Whitcombs' Area Rule (in Aerodynamics). The article exists in few languages, including English. I have added the Hebrew version (link below). I am an Aeronautical engineer, and one of my professors read and authorized it, so I'm guessing that counts as 'proofread'? Am I correct?

IP-hopping user with severe conduct issues

There is a user with severe conduct issues who has been jumping between many different IP addresses, including 117.13.95.116, 117.14.243.223, 117.15.55.57, 125.38.13.34, 2409:8902:9300:2967:8520:E396:FDC6:D58D, 2409:8902:9021:E391:E6E6:3F77:A39A:C1B3, 60.26.9.220. (I'm assuming they are the same person since they appear to be continuing on discussions as though working on the assumption that others will consider them to have been the same person.) Conduct issues include blatant antisemitism (1 (calling another user "a Judaic" as part of an attack of some sort), 2 (proclaiming "we should anti-Judaism here")), personal attacks, general antagonism and an extreme lack of civility. @Liuxinyu970226: What, those IP accused me "Islamophobia" because my edits on the Golan Height page was allegedly benefiting Israel, and then my edit on Spratly Island included removal of a "claim" for Indonesia that was not real (which is just like fake claims of other countries that I removed at the same time, like Japan and Australia and United States and such). I can understand why they would subjectively antagonize me as "Islamophobic" under charged emotion but I will not accept such accusation under objective evaluation. If you're using your discretion, then say "I'm using my discretion". You can do that. But don't say "You didn't take the first prerequisite step" when there is no prerequisite first step. That is justifying your response with a falsehood. protection of a wikidata element

Hi, the following wikidata element Lomita (Q984162) is the target of reccurent vandalism due to it's proximity with the pseudo of a french admin, vandalism which appears on the wikipedia page despite the protection measures in place there. I don't understand why Multichill opened another conversation, since in the last one the issue now with divergence was already stated, and I tried to obtain an explanation and din't obtain one. If I am not mistaken, the question now is: Can we, or we can not, insert an Administrative location (P131) and a related Country statement in a painting item?

Almost in all mine previous contributions creating painting items, at the Location (P276) statement I inserted un administrative one, probably induced by the synthetic definition in portuguese, "local onde se situa um objeto físico ou onde ocorre um evento", which still not refers to the P130, and because thinking that having the name of the city/town/village in the item was enriching the information. And as I normally use the portuguese platform, when at left the statements boxes open, what I used to see was the synthetic definition of Location (P276), and I persisted in the wrong practice (still don´t understand the dificulty arisig to querys from having a administrative location at the P276, but I accept and now respect).

But since the previous conversation, after being advised to insert the administrative location at the specific statement (P131), and after beginning to do so, Multichill started reverting this contributions, namely at the ones cited at the beginning of this conversation. And, as I had said in the previous conversation, I don't understand why. And would very much appreciate an explanation for the Multichill actions of deleting the P131 statements in painting items. As explained before. How to model works of art is described at Wikidata:Project_chat#Edition_War_Q63256315. For movable objects like paintings we only use location (P276) to indicate location, we don't use located in the administrative territorial entity (P131). Adding that is redundant information that lowers the data quality. The located in the administrative territorial entity (P131) can be derived from location (P276). I also do not understand why the admin allowed the labels, charges, and parody accounts to be listed. According to the policy they must be well cited and neutral which I do not believe that they are. If an organization has a temp domain it is clearly not a reliable source. Also the website has been suspended for who knows what. This was clearly an attack against the individual in question. The info left on the page seems to be a Violation of the Wikidata:Living people policy which clearly states "Labels, descriptions and aliases need to be neutral and well-sourced (ideally based on referenced statements on the item) and particular care should be taken in editing these for items about living persons. Talk to Andy - I agree. Everyone got a 3 day block as far as I can tell. What I don't understand is why the suspension was the same. Trade / Jasper Deng - I want to clarify something... the charges section on this property is simply false and libel. According to the charges tag, it is "offence with which someone is charged, at a trial" see Property:P1595. This individual has never been criminally charged not once. I only removed the violations of LP that looked obvious to me, namely the sockpuppet ones. Maybe I shouldn't have fully protected it, but since some information like the Facebook ID wasn't in violation of LP (he has a blue check there), there was edit warring and therefore both editors received blocks. This user keeps periodically vandalizing descriptions in Swedish. I've been keeping an eye on them for almost 6 months, thinking they would get a grip and stop this nonsense if I just gave them some time. Unfortunately, it seems like they are not stopping any time soon. I believe a 6+ months block would be appropriate as a warning.

This started back in November 2018 and they seem to take a break for a couple of weeks before finding some new descriptions to vandalize. I have reverted the older ones, but will take care of the newer ones now.

@Mohanad Kh: looks like these ip's are part of a larger range from an ISP in Egypt. The range 197.40.0.0/13 is registered to them and all these ip's seem to be covered by Special:Contributions/197.47.64.0/19, but is it all vandalism? Not everything is reverted, also see ar:Special:Contributions/197.47.0.0/16.
Blocking these individual ip's now is pointless because of the dynamic nature. Blocking the /19 might be overkill. Opinions please. Multichill (talk) 14:08, 24 May 2019 (UTC)
