Wikidata:WikiProject sum of all paintings/Sandbox

Gotta' collect 'em all!

WikiProject Sum of All Paintings (SOAP) is a WikiProject to create a Wikidata item for every notable painting.
It is a universal Catalogue raisonné in structured data!

Wikidata knows about: <xxxxx> paintings,
<xxxx> painters, and <xxxx> collections.

The scope of this project is notable paintings. That is, the painting is:

  • in a collection of a notable museum, library, archive (e.g. any painting in the Metropolitan Museum of Art)
  • made by a notable artist (e.g. any painting by Vincent Van Gogh).

These criteria mean that the works generally have documentation written by reliable secondary sources. The scope can always be expanded - in the future we might have the sum of all sculptures, drawings...

Recommended metadata stye and common problems edit

Below are some commonly seen circumstances in adding Wikidata properties for art (and artists, collections), how the SoAP team recommends they be handled, and example items for each.
See also the WikiProject Visual arts Item structure. For more unusual cases, please ask on the talkpage.

Type (instance of, genre, movement, material, format, shape) edit

  • Movement:
  • Height/Width:

Attribution (artist, creator, anonymous, school of, attributed to) edit

  • Creator:
  • Anonymous: When the artist of a work is declared by the source to be "unknown", "anonymous", <blank> etc. set the Property creator (P170) to anonymous (Q4233718) (not to be confused with the many other items with the label "anonymous".
  • School of:

Collection (location institution, inventory number, catalogue, private, unknown) edit

  • Collection: Add collection (P195) and link to the organisation (not the building, if different) that "owns" the work). For add a "start date" and "end date" as qualifiers if acquisition/sale date(s) are know.
  • Inventory Number: As well If you are absolutely sure the collection does not use any inventory numbers.ou can give it inventory number (P217) with "no value" (the snak).
  • Location: Most commonly this is the same item as "collection" but can be more specific (a building, a room) or separate (e.g. if on permanent/long-term loan to another location). Add the most specific location that Wikidata has an item for. Not to be confused with "coordinate location" which should very rarely be used for paintings (cave paintings being a notable exception). Subject (main subject, depicts) edit

  • Depicts: The Property depicts (P180) can refer to specific buildings (if a cityscape), or to people (if a portrait), but it can also be something less specific, such as "snow" or "umbrella". example item
  • Main subject:
  • Iconclass:

Medium (material) edit

Catalogue edit

  • Catalogue code: Use Property catalog code (P528) for the catalog number; then the Property catalog (P972) as a qualifier for the specific catalog (if the catalog doesn't exist, create an item for it). An artwork will often appear in more than one catalogue, so add a new Statement for each. example item

Groups (series of works, cycle) edit

  • Painting series:
  • Diptych, triptych, and polyptych: When there are multiple separate canvases that are known by a collective name (for example the Ghent Altarpiece (Q734834)...
