Incorrect Harvest Templates import

Hi, please block Edoardo88 if he doesn't pause his Harvest Templates import of song data. He is adding a lot of incorrect data to items about compositions; the data being added pertains to the respective items about the audio tracks. Jc86035 (talk) 15:03, 4 November 2018 (UTC)

User MB-one always splits the one item into two because of some "fictional" concepts. Because I'm creating hundreds of this form of locality, please block him from doing so.

There is a train station called "Bahnhof Aichach" which all its train station related properties. In Bavaria there is a term called "Gemeindeteil" - this term stands for any named place in a municipality like towns, villages, hamlets, hermitages and sometimes castles, sanatoriums, mills, forester's houses, train stations and so on. These "Gemeindeteil" are named by the municipality and sometimes it revokes some of the names too.

Aichach (Q55133909) is a train station, which is proved as train station (Bhf.) for example in the "Amtlichen Ortsverzeichnis von Bayern" (official gazetteer from Bavaria) 1964 page 9 [2] under the municipality "Algertshausen". From the same gazetteer, page 6* [3] I cite "Die Bahnhöfe sind mit ihren bahnamtlichen Bezeichnungen und der Höhenlage über Normalnull in den Gemeindeteilen angegeben, in denen sie liegen. In manchen Gemeinden bilden sie eigene Gemeindeteile." (The train stations are specified with their train-official name and absolute altitude in the Gemeindeteilen, in which they are. In some municipalities they form own Gemeindeteile). So the train station themself is a Gemeindeteil.

User:MB-one always divides this train station in two items without any need. His reason is, that train station and "Gemeindeteil" subject two different concepts. Is this the idea of wikidata, to create concepts and divide one physical existant object in more items? I cant't follow him. He distributes the properties to the two items and ignores the sources. Why ist inhabitants a property of his created "Gemeindeteil" but not of his train station? Like the source of 1964 shows, there live 11 inhabitants in the train station (perhaps the station master with his family and so on). Why is located in the administrative territorial entity (P131) with Algertshausen municipality value only in the "Gemeindeteil", the train station is there until first of January 1974, too. Why he deletes the alias name "Bahnhof Aichach" from the "Gemeindeteil" I don't know - you can see at [4] that the "Gemeindeteil"/train station is named so at 1980.

I'm importing for a long time many information from the Bavarian official gazeteers from 1877 to 1987 and there are many such objects (train stations, castles, mills, even powerhouses, and so on). I don't think, it's a good idea to divide all of them into more items without any need. --Balû (talk) 14:17, 5 November 2018 (UTC)

@Balû, MB-one: You should probably discuss this on the relevant item Talk page, or to come up with a general rule perhaps in Project Chat. I'm aware that some very small places are included in old gazetteers (I have some ancestors who lived at a mill that was a little apart from the nearest town in Bavaria in the 1800s). Is a mill or station a conceptually different thing from the small community of people who lived there? I think that split is (somewhat) justified. This seems similar to how we may split off an item for a building from the organization that operates there (say a hospital or institute, etc.). I don't think the splitting is required, but if somebody wants to put in the effort to do it it improves the internal conceptual integrity of the items in Wikidata, so in general it seems a good thing. Closing of the RFC Allow the creation of links to redirects in Wikidata

There's a clear consensus on https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Requests_for_comment/Allow_the_creation_of_links_to_redirects_in_Wikidata . I don't see any reason why the RFC doesn't get closed more than a year after it has been opened. Given that I myself started it, I'm not in the position to close it but I see no reason why any other admin shouldn't be able to close it. ChristianKl11:11, 4 November 2018 (UTC)

Hello. Are Q58235622 and Q58214574 useful or should be deleted? Thank you David (talk) 11:55, 6 November 2018 (UTC)

(Posting not in admin-role here, since I am somewhat involved). Those classes are useful and part of a new initiative/WikiProject to improve coverage of cultural heritage in Germany (ping item creator @Derzno: FYI). In case of doubt about notability, please ask the item creator about their plans with the item(s) in question, or request deletion at WD:RfD directly to have a notability discussion over there. —MisterSynergy (talk) 13:06, 6 November 2018 (UTC)
MisterSynergy thx for heads up. I’m currently working on two main topics. Cultural heritage and geotopes. The discussed items above are usual terms of geology. It’ll be a characteristic for a clear definition of the content on specific geotopes. You can ask “Mrs. Google” on “Schichtfolge” and will get x1000 results. Anyhow I’m preparing approximately 3000 geotopes to be moved to WD and in advance I’m defining much more of such still missing geology expressions. Please don’t delete any item without knowing background. In this case it ‘ll be better to ask the creator before discuss it somewhere. Normally I don’t get any notice on such issues if nobody is waking me up.--Derzno (talk) 14:20, 6 November 2018 (UTC)

Edit request on Q16503

Hi,

I would like to change the french label of this fully-protected element from Project:Le Bistro to Wikipédia:Le Bistro because french namespace Project: is translated to Wikipédia:.

Cordially. --Niridya (talk) 19:45, 7 November 2018 (UTC)

@Niridya:   Done, please check it. Bencemac (talk) 07:36, 8 November 2018 (UTC)
@Bencemac: But that's only the Wikipedia page name, other French projects don't use "Wikipédia" as the translation for "Project". The idea behind using "Project" is to make it more neutral. - Nikki (talk) 08:48, 8 November 2018 (UTC)
Then we cannot complete this request (but we are able to use it as an alias). I will revert my edit as soon as @Niridya reacts. Bencemac (talk) 10:43, 8 November 2018 (UTC)
@Bencemac: Thanks a lot for your edit! That's perfect! Can you delete the Project:Le Bistro alias because this namespace was replaced by Wikipedia: in majority of wikis (including frWP and enWP).
@Nikki: But I don't understant why Nikki don't agree with this edit because all Wikipedias are using the Wikipedia: namespace. See this page in enWP for example. --Niridya (talk) 18:36, 8 November 2018 (UTC)
@Niridya: Other wikis such as Wikibooks, Wikisource, Wiktionary, and others do not use the "Wikipedia:" namespace; they use namespaces such as "Wikibooks:", "Wikisource:", "Wiktionary:", and others. In order to stay neutral, the namespace should be replaced with "Project:", with other specific namespaces used as aliases. Mahir256 (talk) 18:41, 8 November 2018 (UTC)
@Mahir256: That's what he wanted to say... That's true. I don't know if it is a neutral point of view but I think that setting the label to the Wikipedia name is the best idea. Also, almost all others Village pumps are using the Wikipedia (or other translation of this word) instead of Project:.
If you prefer don't use the Wikipedia: name, you can set the label to Project:Le Bistro and set Wikipédia:Le Bistro as alias. ;-) --Niridya (talk) 20:48, 8 November 2018 (UTC)

NessieVL edits

Could this be somehow stopped? Firstly, I though that this user additions are not entirely correct, because of different structure in Wikidata and Commons chemistry field and specifics of the Wikidata items about chemical compounds, but now I see that NessieVL is probably adding just random images from different articles to WD. Just take a look at Q5925744: File:Fe-TableImage.png... really? He or she didn't answer to my comment and is adding more and more images to WD items. Most of these images are wrong without proper media legend (P2096) (which is not imported from Wikipedia articles), because without it one cannot say how certain image is connected to the concept described in the item. Wostr (talk) 20:35, 10 November 2018 (UTC)

Am I really the only editor using WDFIST, or does it not leave adequate edit summaries? Also, thank you for just now mentioning specific examples. Though how an image of iron on the periodic table is "wrong" for an item on human iron metabolism is not as clear as your attitude suggests. Plus if additional P items are needed to the edits, this maybe needs an alleyoop or a discussion with the makers of WDFIST. Perhaps you shouldn't start with accusations of malfesiance, WikiData isn't known for its clarity and usability, and I don't feel I was straying too far fom Being Bold.--NessieVL (talk) 04:58, 12 November 2018 (UTC)
@Wostr: see the response above and on your talk page. Mahir256 (talk) 05:05, 12 November 2018 (UTC)
@NessieVL: maybe you're the only one using WDFist this way; probably you're the only one using it this way in chemistry-related items that I have on my watchlist. I can't speak about how many images should be included in botanical items and if images you added there are useful or not, I see how many redundant or wrong images you've added in chemical items. Examples below, but first: image (P18) is not the only property for images and there is clear instruction on P18 page that more specific properties should be used when available. Secondly, Wikidata is not Commons, we don't create galleries of the concept, so similar images, especially if these images are very similar to each other, are usually not needed. What's more, Wikidata is not Commons again: we don't use pictures that are loosely connected to the concept, but pictures that clearly illustrate the concept — if i want to add picture to an item about a writer, I should add picture of the writer himself, not the book he wrote, not his wife and not his house. Many images that are loosely connected to the concept or images inadequately described when it's necessary to establish a clear connection between the concept and the picture are a huge problem for any data re-user. Examples in chemistry field: ironeman (Q5925744)File:Fe-TableImage.png is way out of scope of this item, it does not represents iron metabolism, but position of iron in the periodic table (it's okay to use it in Wikipedia article, but not in Wikidata); File:Cellular iron homeostasis.png and File:Métabolisme du fer.jpg are okay, but how re-user can get the proper image without a qualifier stating the language used in the image? And does File:Fe transport mechanism.jpg and File:Firrtin.JPG represents iron metabolism? I don't know, but seeing that you have added a picture about iron position in the periodic table as an illustration of iron metabolism I'm afraid that these two may also be some random images from Wikipedia articles. Let's take a look at items about chemical compounds: your edits in L-arginine (Q173670) – 3 sticks models (why all three? one is okay), one image of both arginine enantiomers (wrong image, as this item is about only L isomer, not about both like some Wikipedia articles), one incorrect image and two redundant PNG images (there is already a good quality SVG picture in chemical structure (P117)); your edits in palmitic acid (Q209727) – 4 redundant PNG structures while there is better SVG structure in chemical structure (P117), three 3D models (one is okay, but the rest are of very low quality), 2 schemes of chemical reactions involving palmitic acid (so these two pictures should illustrate items describing that reactions) and 1 odd picture with Spanish text and a background (in fact, totally unsuitable for re-using anywhere); your edits in L-aspartic acid (Q178450) – 5 ball-and-stick and stick models (including one incorrect of zwitterion), 2 structures (but one structure of only L isomer and the second with both isomers...). I also wonder how this or this is helpful in any way... but that's not my field, so I won't try to enumerate potential problems with edits outside chemistry field. All I ask is that you stop adding chemistry-related images if you're not sure that these images are correct (e.g. showing the right stereoisomer, the right and correctly drawn structure) or adding many redundant/low quality images while there are already better versions present in the item. You should keep in mind that Wikidata differs from Wikipedias; each of your edits may affect dozens of Wikimedia projects or even projects/websites outside Wikimedia; with over 50M items many of your edits may be left unnoticed for a long time, so any 'be bold' attitude should be at least limited, instead some competence is required, because tools like wdfist shows only propositions, something you can do, but not always should. Wostr (talk) 18:58, 12 November 2018 (UTC)
So only English-language text is allowed? Or if you don't understand the language, you want it removed? Also, if an article is about one stereoisomer, wouldn't an image distinguishing it from the other isomer be important? --NessieVL (talk) 19:45, 12 November 2018 (UTC)
@NessieVL: Image about L-isomer should be in an item about L-isomer, image about D-isomer should be in an item about D-isomer, image about both isomers (with proper description) or image about structure without defined stereochemistry (with proper description) should be in an item about group of isomers. We don't need (and don't want) images to distinguish one isomer from another, that's the purpose of a specific property, because Wikidata is based on statements, not visual comparison between items. Wostr (talk) 20:17, 12 November 2018 (UTC)

Please block User:Simon Villeneuve to stop controversial mass adding of owner of (P1830) if it's possible by block policy. It's not vandalism, but I'm afraid it might get difficult to undo it. I apologize - I don't know how to properly merge (or connect?) the pages V-a-c Foundation (Q27346283), V-a-c Foundation (Q30589015) which are the same subject property. Quite a lot of vandalism going on there. I don't really speak Spanish, but I think some kind of tv show used some other name for her during an appearance and now people who saw it try to insert that name here. The article on the Spanish WP was already protected two days ago following similar vandalism, but unfortunately their infoboxes still have edit buttons leading to Wikidata even when the pages are protected. --Kam Solusar (talk) 23:11, 23 November 2018 (UTC)

Daniel Mietchen pointed out on the talk page that User:Lucas Werkmeister/Wikidata Lexeme Forms should really be in the Wikidata namespace, and I figure he’s right. Hi. Please merge José Falcão (Q20049100) and José Falcão (Q923866). The real name is "José Falcão" but is also knowned as José Falcón ("Falcão" is portuguese but it's dificult to say for spanish speaking people so they started calling him "Falcón" (same as the english "Falcon"). Since he was a "matador" he spent a lot of time in Spain. Thank you, FilipeFalcão (talk) 18:06, 26 November 2018 (UTC)

@FilipeFalcão:   Done though was he born in 1942 or 1944? (The articles seem to differ on this point.) Mahir256 (talk) 18:12, 26 November 2018 (UTC)
@Mahir256: Thank you and thank for the question. Well, I think it's 1942 has the exibition, called "José Falcão. 1942-1974"» (a clue), in his hometown (based on the book "José Falcão. Justiça para um Valente" - Solilóquio (1974, Anuário Comercial de Portugal) OCLC 252819437) indicates. In the exibition booklet you can read "At 1 in the morning of August 30, 1942 was born in Povos, Vila Franca de Xira, José Carlos Frita Falcão, son of Sofia of the Conceição Frita Falcão and Fernando Morgado Falcão.". I've not found yet a better and more extensive information. I think that someone in Spain, at some point, confused the "4" his death (1974) with is birth (1942). 95.26.90.101

This is the Billy Boyd repeat vandal: Special:Contributions/95.26.90.101. Ghouston (talk) 22:21, 24 November 2018 (UTC)

Let us start with 31h.--Ymblanter (talk) 22:34, 24 November 2018 (UTC)
Hello @Ghouston, Ymblanter: thank you for managing this case in Wikidata.
For information: this is not the IP of a new user. This is the current IP of the cross-wiki long-term abuser who is described in my long report meta:Steward requests/Global/2018-07#Global block for 95.26.124.172.
The report lists 122 Russian IP, with 1313 edits since May 2017, in 5 ranges (83.220.236.0/22, 95.25.0.0/16, 95.26.0.0/16, 176.14.0.0/16 and 176.59.32.0/19), but mainly in the third and fifth IP ranges. The report also lists earlier reports, and is concluded by a mail from myself to the stewards on 14 July 2018 (following the advice by There'sNoTime). Since then, I have sent another mail (on 21 November 2018), with 20 additional Russian IP (including 95.26.90.101), with more than 300 edits. I am waiting for the answers by the stewards.
Regards --NicoScribe (talk) 17:56, 25 November 2018 (UTC)
I am not comfortable blocking IP ranges, but may be somebody else can.--Ymblanter (talk) 20:31, 25 November 2018 (UTC)
@Ymblanter: no problem. There are legitimate users in these ranges so you (and the stewards) do not want to block them: I understand.
My only goal here was to inform you and Ghouston, so that you will not be surprised if more vandalism comes from these 5 ranges, and that you can set long block on individual IP used by this abuser. --NicoScribe (talk) 18:56, 26 November 2018 (UTC)
Also, the 31h block wasn't long enough: [5]. If you want to block each new IP as they are used, that's OK, since seems to take a few weeks before they get a new one. I suggest some administrators put the favourite items to vandalise on their watchlist. Ghouston (talk) 02:50, 27 November 2018 (UTC)
I protected Q329734 for a year.--Ymblanter (talk) 21:01, 27 November 2018 (UTC)
@Ymblanter: thank you, but the abuser is back and is still using 95.26.90.101. I think that it could be interesting to set a longer block for this IP, and semi-protections of Q276425 and Q30888528. --NicoScribe (talk) 22:15, 28 November 2018 (UTC)
I blocked the ip for a month and protected Q30888528 for a month. I am not sure about Q276425 and will welcome a second opinion.--Ymblanter (talk) 22:21, 28 November 2018 (UTC)
@Ymblanter: thank you for the block.
About Q30888528, I don't see a protection in its log?
About Q276425, I add just one note: in the item's history, all the anonymous edits since 5 September 2017‎ belong to the cited 5 ranges (except one honest IP user on 28 August 2018). --NicoScribe (talk) 23:30, 28 November 2018 (UTC)

Block tool broken?

On 22 October I blocked Atobot indefinitely after having conversation with the bot operator and some other involved editors, because it is used for an unconventional page archiving scheme in huwiki that annoyed lots of other editors. The Atobot account block has not been changed since. Nevertheless, the bot account made another edit this night in spite of still being blocked, see Special:Contributions/Atobot. Am I missing something, or is the block tool broken? —MisterSynergy (talk) 00:56, 30 November 2018 (UTC)

Opinions needed

I have problems with West Kowloon Station Mainland Port Area (Q48928408). I was the one who protected the page during its edit war (see the page history) and asked the participants to reach consensus. Two days ago, an anon reverted my edit and started again deleting/changing the problematic statements. Maybe I am the blind one, but I do not see clear consensus about it. I am not sure about that what I or we should do, so please check the item and help me deciding what would be the best move. Thanks! Bencemac (talk) 14:26, 28 November 2018 (UTC)

Just block these new IPs (and better, just range block them /24):210.3.92.226, 210.3.92.210, 223.17.64.233, 223.17.65.23, 223.17.66.210 --180.97.204.18 00:02, 29 November 2018 (UTC)
Anyway this page should permanently be semi-protected. --180.97.204.18 00:04, 29 November 2018 (UTC)
I started watching the item this afternoon, and saw continuation of the edit war just now. Thus I protected the version I currently found for another week, without expressing preference for it. Editors still need to find consensus, otherwise we do indeed need to issue user blocks or range blocks.
Thus: involved editors, please elaborate a consensus at a suitable page (preferentially Talk:Q48928408; mind this and that discussion). I’m watching the item talk page as well. —MisterSynergy (talk) 00:12, 29 November 2018 (UTC)
@MisterSynergy: I will consider the result of Wikidata:Property proposal/Generic#administrated by the administrative territorial entity as the final consensus. 210.3.92.210 03:41, 4 December 2018 (UTC)

@MisterSynergy: I am unsure about the current label deletion and because of it, I do not want to act. Bencemac (talk) 14:49, 7 December 2018 (UTC)

Well, this IP user still do removal of aliases, *without any fair reasons provided*, that said, an alias isn't the article naming, with the exception that affects BLP, an alias can be itself useful for any external users to find an item much more easier, the removal IMO should only be happened because 1. affecting BLP, or 2. the redirect points to a local "was-redirect" page, where it's altered to an article (and so by technical you have to remove it). --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 15:01, 11 December 2018 (UTC)
@MisterSynergy: And, instead of full protection in some periods, can we please semi-protect this item infinitely? --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 15:10, 11 December 2018 (UTC)

Does Liuxinyu970226 trying to control Q48928408 and not allow IP users to edit it? There is no such alias "Shenzhen West Kowloon". No evidence on Google search. Please do not swear black is white. 223.17.64.233 13:59, 13 December 2018 (UTC)

Seems like there is still no consensus about the matter, thus the item is now fully protected again for a week in the state that I found. If edit warring continues, user blocks for involved editors may be an option next time. Did any new discussion take place meanwhile? —MisterSynergy (talk) 13:57, 13 December 2018 (UTC)

On the other hand, the High Court of Hong Kong has made a judgement today (13 Dec 2018). According to paragraph 64 of the Judgement, Judge Anderson Chow said:

It is not in dispute that the Mainland Port Area falls with the territory of Hong Kong under the “Order of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China No 221” dated 1 July 1997, which was promulgated in accordance with the “Decision of the National People’s Congress on the Establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region” adopted at the Third Session of the Seventh National People’s Congress on 4 April 1990.

223.17.64.233 14:11, 13 December 2018 (UTC)

Can we please close this huge huge and huge section? It's already staled for one year, and seems already have consensus to delete original language of film or TV show (P364). --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 12:00, 13 November 2018 (UTC)

The problem doesn't seem to be the decision to delete or not, but rather that there are still open questions about how to handle various use-cases without this property that haven't really been fully answered. And from my understanding, lots of items for editions/translations would have to be created to keep all the information intact, but there doesn't seem to be concrete plans or volunteers to actually do that for thousands of works. --Kam Solusar (talk) 22:12, 13 November 2018 (UTC)
@Kam Solusar: Can you point to an example item which will break if we merge original language of film or TV show (P364) with language of work or name (P407)? Thanks. --2604:A880:CAD:D0:0:0:52E:4001 08:49, 14 November 2018 (UTC)
Well, it's the impression I got from the discussions there. Maybe User:Jura1 or User:EncycloPetey can chime in on whether the poential problems brought up by them have been resolved. --Kam Solusar (talk) 23:20, 14 November 2018 (UTC) Edit: User:Fnielsen also brougt up some potential issues with books/editions. --Kam Solusar (talk) 23:22, 14 November 2018 (UTC)
  • P364 seems to have emerged as the property to use on films and related items. In the meantime, some subsequent discussion took place on Property_talk:P407#Label about its label and apparently not much came from it either. This despite that Property:P2439 was deleted under the assumption that the label would change (If I recall that correctly). Maybe there is a gap between contributors using the properties and participants in PfD discussions. --- Jura 12:42, 15 November 2018 (UTC)
And what it is your argument that language of work or name (P407) should not be merged with original language of film or TV show (P364)? seems to have emerged is bushwa, not a reason. --2604:A880:CAD:D0:0:0:52E:4001 07:59, 20 November 2018 (UTC)

As the originator of the discussion on WD:PFD, I'd like to give my personal view on this issue. The original discussion was closed by User:Matěj Suchánek in May 2017 with the conclusion that there is consensus to merge the two properties [6]. The subsequent and now still open discussion is dealing with the question how to merge the properties. For songs, books and theater production that discussion was fruitful, today original language of film or TV show (P364) is not used anymore in these domains (with a few exceptions, see #2 and #6 below). Contrary, movies and TV series still largely depend on P364, although for TV series the situation is more complicated (9.8K statements use P407 [7], 19.1K statements use P364 [8]). But most importantly, there are no items which use both P364 and P407. So why are both properties required? In the discussion on WD:PFD no telling argument was made why movies can not migrate to P407, WD:WikiProject Movies does not list any case where an item would need two language properties because original work and dubbings are separated, and the above comments in this section also don't mention any problem which would occur from merging. To be honest, the only reason why we still have P364 is the stubbornness of very few users. I can understand that people try to defend their opinions, unfortunately the current situation comes with some drawbacks:

  1. it is against community consensus [9]
  2. it causes conflicts in certain domains, e.g. a speech can be filmed or written down, a musical film is a performing arts production and a film
  3. data usage and querying is complicated
  4. code reusability is not possible
  5. on Wikipedia, templates have to be adapted to expect both P364 and P407
  6. it causes additional maintenance work. User are regularly erroneously adding P364 to books or P407 to movies. Even experienced users make these mistakes [10] [11] [12].

The question which remains to be answered by an administrator is whether the stubbornness of very few users or these drawbacks should be weighted higher. --Pasleim (talk) 20:40, 26 November 2018 (UTC)

Anyone? --Pasleim (talk) 13:37, 2 December 2018 (UTC)
This is not an area I have any particular interest in, but from reading the above (and previously reading at least at some point the looong discussion on PfD) it seems to me if no example can be provided where both P364 and P407 would both be needed on a given item with differing values, they should be merged. I think one (fringe?) case that came up in that discussion is a case where you know the language of an edition and of the original work, but there's a gap somewhere in the chain of linked editions/translations between those two. E.g. you have an edition that isn't directly based on the original work but rather on some edition or translation, yet you don't know which edition. In that case, the original language can't be queried by going up the chain of edition or translation of (P629) statements all the way to the work item. But maybe that's already solved by the books Wikiproject? --Kam Solusar (talk) 21:03, 8 December 2018 (UTC)
Can you provide an example? I could not find it in the deletion discussion. In case an edition can not be linked with the original work, I'm wondering how original publication date or original publication place is retrieved. 81.171.26.9 21:41, 14 December 2018 (UTC)
Unfortunately not. I don't really work on book items, so I don't know how often such cases occur or how they are handled now. My guess would be that the original publication dates and places can't be easily retrieved either. It's probably not much of a problem with many other kinds of works. Though I haven't looked into how video game items handle games that are developed in one language and then published with several languages/translations already included in the original game. --Kam Solusar (talk) 17:59, 18 December 2018 (UTC)
