On the reverts, i put the reasons "Return to original official writing according to sources" and "Veuillez respecter la première graphie choisi et le PMS. Merci= Please respect the first choosen writing and the Principle of least Surprise (WP:PLA). Thank you". I always adopt a NPOV based on sources.

Discussions with TED are more than problematic in the French Wikipedia on this topic of the word "Taxonomie" or "taxinomie" (both are accepted in french but "Taxinomie with "i" is scarcely used). Even the french president Macron use "Taxonomie" in his speaches !. The vast majority of people and researchers and pCW uses "o" but a small part of 2-3 people in french wikipedia uses "i" without respecting the official sources. That's not a problem for me if they respect the sentence choosed by the first pcW author in wikidata (or WP) or the word used in the sources. I do not modify his statements when he choose its "i" version (despite the fact that he do not respect the majority of french sources), i just hope that he will respect the choice of other persons based on reliable sources. @Emu: I'm not sure how far the recent notability guidelines allow, but I think this item has a problem of notability. As a Korean author, only a few articles(papers) are searched for by this person's name, and there are thousands of such people in Republic of Korea. What to do about User:BBC400, he is banned from Commons and multiple Wikipedias under at least 6 SPAs. He deletes links to images and deletes links to family member entries here at Wikidata, but he does occasionally add useful information here at Wikidata. Should we lock all the entries that he is vandalizing so that they cannot be edited by new users? For instance look at this deletion he did even though the information comes from the website he created called Man8rove and information at Geneanet and Ancestry. He is also editing anonymously, See: Special:Contributions/2A01:CB05:8915:D300:E852:D616:673D:4D5F. Here is another account he is editing under: Special:Contributions/AnjouFiertéH. If you look at Special:WhatLinksHere/Q104854552 you can follow most of the entries he is editing, and all the accounts that are not me, are him. I think we need to lock these entries to people with less than a certain number of edits. If you click through from Wikidata to English Wikipedia you can look at the edit history to see his multiple accounts that have been blocked there.

Bot-maintaining protected page?

Hi all. Yesterday I wrote some code to auto-update Template:Watchlist summary/PFD and archive things from Wikidata:Properties for deletion, and have requested bot permission to run this regularly at Wikidata:Requests for permissions/Bot/Pi bot 25. However, I've since discovered that Template:Watchlist summary/PFD is admin protected. I'm not too sure how to proceed now - I think there are two options, either changing the protection level of the template to autoconfirmed, or requesting admin bot access (either through the main 'Pi bot' account, or by creating 'Pi admin bot'). Edit warring?

Nikki on the Telegram chat told me that I should report this. I don't understand why user MPF has removed a number of aliases that I added to Viola tricolor (Q190326), and changed many taxon common names that I added under English to American English and deprecated them. Weren't they correct under the English tag? And why should they be deprecated? I regularly have this user changing the capitalization in aliases to capitalized words when I don't think that Wikidata policy for labels for animals and plants says that they should be capitalized. Can someone explain what was wrong with my edits on that item (and others that user regularly changes)? UWashPrincipalCataloger (talk) 05:47, 3 April 2022 (UTC)

I did so because they are American names and not English names; they are therefore correctly cited as en-us, not en. I tagged them as deprecated, because they are imprecise or even misleading, referring to potentially more than one taxon (notably to Viola × wittrockiana (Q12861234)).

Wikidata policy states "Labels begin with a lowercase letter except for when uppercase is normally required or expected" (my emphasis). In English (but I gather, not in American), uppercase is normally expected for formal species names (see e.g. the numerous referenced citations from IUCN Red List (Q32059), IOC World Bird List (Q27907678), Mammal Species of the World (Q111172813), and others, all highly respected and influential international standards for species names). Therefore, en labels & aliases should be capitalised where they are official standard names, but en-us need not be. - MPF (talk) 21:04, 3 April 2022 (UTC)

When someone searches using an English name, regardless of whether it may refer to more than one taxon, they should retrieve all of the possible items that could be species they want. The search bar searches aliases in Wikidata, but not taxon common names that are just in the taxon common name statements. We should be aiding users, not limiting their ability to retrieve items. The aliases do that. When someone searches for "Johnny-jump-up" they should be given the choice of items Q4013802 and Q190326. Many editors also disagree with this interpretation that uppercase is normally required or expected for common names. These names are not capitalized in general encyclopedias or dictionaries, in newspapers, and even in many scientific articles. Your interpretation of en labels and aliases is another peculiar interpretation of what should go in them. I don't see your problem there. The search will still pick it up, and now, will tell users correctly that it is an American name, and not an English name. So precision is advanced, not hindered, by my edits. The search bar is case insensitive, so it won't fail to show the standard Wild Pansy if 'wild pansy' is entered; but they will see the name as it is given in flora textbooks, field guides, etc. (i.e., capitalised). And using the 'deprecated' tag on the vernacular name list will also help people understand that a name is not a clear, unique name, but a loose term used for multiple taxa (or, equally, if it is deprecated for any other reason, such as being archaic, or an offensive term, etc.). What would be useful is to be able to add tags easily for reasons for deprecation (e.g. imprecision, archaic, offensive, etc.). - MPF (talk) 08:48, 4 April 2022 (UTC)

The search bar does not search terms in statements, only terms in label, description, and aliases. If you enter "Johnny-jump-up" in the search bar, you do not get Viola tricolor (Q190326). I don't think deprecating a valid statement that is supported by a reference source, and that is not incorrect ("Johnny-jup-up" is a name for two different species of Viola), is a proper use of deprecation. Ultimately, I just don't think your policing of what can be put in an alias is proper or what aliases in Wikidata were intended for: "Aliases are alternative names for items that are placed in the Also known as column of the table on top of every Wikidata item page. ... The label on a Wikidata entry is the most common name that the entity would be known by to readers. All of the other common names that an entry might go by, including alternative names; acronyms and abbreviations; and alternative translations and transliterations, should be recorded as aliases" (https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Help:Aliases). @MPF: Please do not further modify the aliases or the P1843 statements on that item unless you're able to provide references to explicitly support these; your argument from some notion of "English vs. American" (as if what is spoken in Detroit is so fundamentally different from that spoken in Windsor, or that of Miami from Nassau, or that of Wilmington from Bermuda, or that of Derby, Connecticut from Derbyshire) is rather flimsy at best. Once you are able to substantiate that the names given are explicitly "American English" to the exclusion of the rest of the Anglosphere, you might only then readjust the language codes, but given that these names are in fact used whether you like how they're capitalized or not, you should have no reason to deprecate them, with or without a reason for deprecated rank (P2241). @Mahir256: - the names I cited as en-us are all from American sources, and can be considered explicitly American (it would for example be "three-coloured violet" if it were English). That should be adequate for them to be tagged en-us. Their absence from English sources is trying to prove a negative; impossible to do, and should not be a requirement. I can add reason(s) for deprecation: what are the options to chose from? We are currently left with the very undesirable situation whereby American names like "johnny jumpup" are stated to be English, which they are not; they are not used by English people, and are actually considered offensive in English as foreign cultural imperialism, an unwelcome attempt to rename one of our favourite native species for us. A perhaps roughly comparable example from your frame of reference would be the minimal reference to the name "Calcutta" in Kolkata (Q1348) (inclusion as an alias, but not included at all anywhere in the Statements); I presume this is because the native people resent the old English imperial usage pushed onto them? - MPF (talk) 17:56, 4 April 2022 (UTC)

@MPF:, before en-us was available as a language option, you were in the habit of changing "en" to "en-ca" for vernacular names sourced to USDA PLANTS (a website run by the United States government, although it also includes Canadian species). Have you made any effort to go back and change all of those "en-ca" you imposed to "en-us" in order to accurately reflect the national variety of English represented by the cited source? @MPF: of course "brinjal" should be listed as a common name for Solanum melongena (Q7540). I've now added it with the print version of the OED I have at hand as a reference (I wasn't finding "brinjal" in any of the taxonomy databases that are usually cited for common names on Wikidata). Regretfully, I had to enter "en" as the language for "brinjal" since "en-in" and "en-pk" are not available option. I won't revert you if you delete "brinjal" as not being an "en" name, but if you do so, I will completely disregard your arguments about "foreign cultural imperialism" related to en-us names. Fusion between Q2256434 and Q30269374?

Good morning all, sorry if i am on the wrong page. I noticed 2 Items about the same scientific group:

• the oldest "Swiss Group for Clinical Cancer Research (Q2256434)" has been created in 2013 and is used by 2 Wikipedia pages (1 german, 1 french)
• the newest " Swiss Group For Clinical Cancer Research (Q30269374)" has been created in 2017 and seems not used in any wikimedia page

Is it possible to fuse both to the oldest? Second question, both items are named in english version, however, the real name of this organization is the german one "Schweizerische Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Klinische Krebsforschung", should we rename the item with this name?

Hi, this item Q111592126 was deleted today. Even I challenged the deletion request with an argument, which deleting admin no just completely ignored, but took just 10hrs to delete item in some kind of hurry. I've been participating in Wikipedia AfDs, but never seen any deletion like this. Item qualified WD:N point#2, as it was clearly cited with "serious and publicly available references" like; the guardian, Mynet, cemre, Social blade entity and her own official website. Each and every statement and value was properly cited. Item clearly qualified Notability policies of Wikidata. Please review this case, and undelete Q111592126. @Abdulhaseebatd: Wikidata RfDs are very different from Wikipedia AfDs; they rely much more heavily on admin judgment for quicker action than AfDs. I don't think whether the article/item's subject is trying to use the Wikipedia page in some way (like the verified tick marks) should impact our decision on whether the subject is notable (though it would serve as evidence of bad-faith editing). Whether or not the subject is trying to spam, we should make our own decision on whether to have the item in the first place independently of that. In this case, I think that criterion 2 is fulfilled, because the person in question is "clearly identifiable" and "can be described using serious and publicly available references" — namely, the Guardian article, and potentially some others. Well, I partially agree: I believe that Wikidata's notability policies are intentionally much looser than the Wikipedias' (at least the Wikipedias that I know of). For criterion 2, the policy states that items "must be notable", and describes notability as being able to "be described using serious and publicly available references". That's it. Wikidata's notability threshold is not that of significant coverage, just that of being describable using serious public references. TheAafi notability of an item on Wikidata is guided by Wikidata:Notability not by WP:GNG, and subject clearly meet #2 of WD:N. I agree with you, Urdu page was "complete rubbish", as it was under active creation. But there's no point in explaining that creating editor didn't text me about the article locally. They're free to recreate it provided that it is written in a clear and understandable text. here. Discussions is about Wikidata item.
And secondly to give a complete picture of whole story, I'll add ms pages were deleted on basis of foreign language. And deletion by Sabri76 on tr Wikipedia (on which your whole argument is based) is nothing less than being controversial. Article had neutral, unbiased point of view about subject, and was very first time created on tr wiki. But still they speedy deleted it and placed creation protection on the page. Massive rearranging and redefinition of established items by User:Micga - need expert help!!!

This user has been rearranging, merging, and redefining a number of items related to law in an avalanche of edits, in many cases turning one item into another already extant item, while leaving porobably dozens of Wikipedia links in the wrong places and probably hundreds of Wikidata links to the wrong items. If there is any cleanup needed to these items, it can surely be done with 1/100th the disruption. I've reverted and advised the user to stop and discuss first, but I don't have the subject-area knowledge to parse what they are trying to do, and do it properly. Calling anyone with knowledge in this area to try to determine what, if anything, actually needs to be done with corporate personhood (Q3376073), personal law (Q3039751), juridical person (Q155076), legal person (Q3778211), personal law (Q5803452) and possibly others. There is a violent anon who is forcibly trying to introduce a different structure without a community agreement.

These are elements of ambassadorial positions for which there is an elaborate structure: User:Metamorforme42/Ambassadors. Now, it’s not interesting that it’s “just” a user page, because the structure of 3,000 affected items follows that https://w.wiki/4iFF.

However, anon has redesigned about fifty items, making it impossible to find the modified items with this query.

I have described to him several times that a change of this level requires a community agreement, and to change the structure in all 3000 elements with a stick, but he did not do so, he just tried to convince me. He did this so violently that I had already sent it off my discussion board because it is harassment: it is not me who needs to be convinced, but the community. However, he has not initiated such a conversation so far.

Now he started demonstrating and changed the structure of 200 of the 3,000 affected elements: Special:Contributions/2001:7D0:81E6:EF80:844D:A334:E7C3:D8F0. I ask that we stop and repair what has gone wrong until there is a new consensus on what the structure of the elements should be (I stress that there is currently a consensus as 3000 elements follow the same pattern). (With a little hesitation, I have also allowed account creation as I feel having this editor use a consistent account would greatly improve communication.) Thanks for this alleviation. However, I still don't quite see why am I blocked at all. As explained in unblock request, I feel that above report outlines a heavily distorted picture of this situation. As you can see, over the past month or so I've already engaged in discussions on this issue. Older comments and edits by multiple other users, which I carefully referenced in edits comments as well as in unblock request, already show that previous structure is generally unwanted, but these references apparently were simply ignored here. In contrast, no evidence has been provided about the claim that there ever was a consensus to use ambassador classes as P31 values. Also, as already commented earlier, I get the concern that (eventually) the data should be consistent and queriable, but this shouldn't be a sole reason to be stuck with erroneous data structure that happens or happened to be more common at some point. 2001:7D0:81E6:EF80:30FD:194A:2299:1841 20:07, 3 May 2022 (UTC)
