Hello @J. Smile (Love & V.A.V.I), Ymblanter:, This article has a good chance of becoming a good article when you see the votes, but it is not technically right now. See Jimmy Page (Q165467) and w:vi:Thảo_luận:Jimmy_Page (with a star). Is it really necessary to put a badge now? Cordially. —Eihel (talk) 20:13, 5 October 2020 (UTC)
I do not speak Vietnamese very well, but I checked that the article on the Vietnamese Wikipedia has a badge, that the badge is linked to some policy, and that the English interwiki page for that policy is a Good article. I do not see what else I should have checked to be honest.--Ymblanter (talk) 20:17, 5 October 2020 (UTC)
However, I see that now it does not have the badge anymore, therefore I have removed the badge in the Wikidata element.--Ymblanter (talk) 20:19, 5 October 2020 (UTC)

Long term vandal back after block

The IP user who has been vandalizing various TV show items is back after their 2 week range block. See last report here.

This time under 2600:1700:3720:3770:2CA3:5663:AC21:F151 (talk • contribs • deleted contribs • logs • filter log • block user • block log • SUL (for IP: GUC)). And like always, various edits of descriptions and labels seem okay, but other edits remove labels without reason and then they simply remove interwiki links and move them to some other, unrelated TV show item (removal 1 + addition here, removal 2 + addition here, removal 3 + addition here).

Pinging @Mahir256: as the admin who last blocked the IP range. Seems two weeks wasn't enough for this person, vandalism re-started right after the block ended. Seeing as this has been going on for months (or even longer, these edits from an IPv4 range were back in March), maybe a long time block is needed (if this IPv6 range doesn't include other editors). --Kam Solusar (talk) 10:45, 10 October 2020 (UTC)

Advice on who can use wikidata

Guys

So im confused as to who can add stuff to wikidata on my behalf.

I had someone create a profile for me, i then added some facts about me alongside references of these facts

I do not sell services, i dont really have anything to promote, i simply added factual information about me, my IMDB profile and a number of other press citations alongside some of my social media links.

It has been deleted and ive been told im note noteworthy? Ive been told a video creator isn't noteworthy, im also told that im spamming.

Now ive never claimed to be noteworthy, ive never said i was an actor ( ive been in a handful of things ) and ive never tried to spam.

My profile was deleted for me adding in a citation about me on forbesindia.com

I was trying to add more factual information about me citing the correct sources.

However from what i can see anyone can be on wikidata, its not only for Hollywood celebrities am i right or wrong in thinking that?

Just im about to make a case study on how this works, and want to make sure that i have my facts right before telling people how this process works, as its seems rigged to me that some admin guy tells me im not a video creator, i never claimed to be one, but i did state ive a youtube channel on there to cite who I am.

So just looking for clarification on who can and cannot have a wikidata profile, as i see many others with wikidata profiles and im only doing the same as others.

And looking for clarification as to who can edit my profile, do i need to get an agent to do this, or am i able to do this myself.  – The preceding unsigned comment was added by Craigcampbell0302 (talk • contribs).

(not an administrator) Hi, Wikidata exists to support Wikipedia and free knowledge in general. Therefore we only accept items that serve this mission and are relevant to a general audience, see also Wikidata:Notability. This also means that we don't want to have an item for all 7 billion people, but just data for notable individuals. Currently notability for living persons is not precisely defined, in general persons are notable if they have a Wikipedia article or are listed in the authority file of a national library or other well-respected catalog. SEO Experts in particular are known to create an item for themselves, to promote their own person and the services they sell. The Wikidata community dislikes this form of advertisement and deletes it. If you know other people with Wikidata profiles that don't fit this description of notability, let me know. --Pyfisch (talk) 13:50, 7 October 2020 (UTC)

Friendly reminder

@Andreasmperu: just removed items Q15304738, Q16738068, Q18445392, Q19967347, Q63042499 with no discussion, claiming they were not notable. But all these have a Commons category with a linked infobox. Now their infoboxes are blank. See for instance this category and this other one. The admin also went on to blank Q55395318 then re-adding some basic info. [3] (after being reverted herself, they reverted back and protected the item claiming "excessive vandalism" - where there obviously isn't). And then also deliberately removed a link to an item they just deleted. Although the notability policy says category items with a sitelink only to Wikimedia Commons are not permitted, in what relates to Q15304738 there is not only the Commons category (and related ones as pointed out above, including one for images uploaded by the individual and other with images taken by the individual) but also another which includes Wikinews articles written by the former Wikinews user and an interview on Wikinews: --200.112.102.19 03:18, 4 October 2020 (UTC)

I have redacted the references to the real name. Please do not add them back --DannyS712 (talk) 05:17, 4 October 2020 (UTC)
??? The right to vanish was conceived for contributors who are leaving a project permanently, not to enable users to abuse the system and boycott several projects. That user has not abandon his aim of self-promotion, and to do so he has used several sock-puppets to try to hide his true identity. That self-promotion is shown by the public use of his real name. Andreasm háblame / just talk to me 05:27, 4 October 2020 (UTC)
Discussions about whether or not this should be shown should not be taking place here. If you believe the hiding was in error, I suggest using email to discuss it DannyS712 (talk) 05:28, 4 October 2020 (UTC)
Sorry, I'm not understanding what you are trying to do. But please be my guest and deal with that user. Andreasm háblame / just talk to me 05:31, 4 October 2020 (UTC)
I don't understand your hostility. I think you should read again the right to vanish page on Meta. I have not created sockpuppets in order to fulfill that (as you put it) "aim of self promotion": just to make things clear, I had a primary account, which ran by my real name, and a secondary account which I used on public computers. I lost access to my primary account in 2015 and the secondary one became my primary account. I retired definitely months ago and you can see I have not used my former accounts ever since. I vanished (yes, I did).
Also, requesting a second look is, by no means, a boycott. My petition was made respectfully and if the deletions are confirmed, I have absolutely no problem with that. 200.112.102.19 05:37, 4 October 2020 (UTC)
Looking at the first item, Diego Grez Cañete (Q15304738), it does appear to meet the notability policy, since it has Library of Congress authority ID (P244)nb2018003453 which on its own should be enough (since Library of Congress authority ID (P244)instance of (P31)Wikidata property for an identifier that suggests notability (Q62589316)). I believe it should be undeleted. The other items are less straightforward, but at least to me appear notable at first glance, and I would suggest sending them to RfD for a second opinion. DannyS712 (talk) 05:42, 4 October 2020 (UTC)

Please consider blocking User:MusicologoVzla or preventing him to edit Q2939142

Repeated erroneous inputs in Q2939142, though he was utterly informed that his conclusions are incorrect. The person described was Italian and had no second surname as it is commonly used only in the Spanish speaking world, and he was not an UK citizen. No trustworthy references available for all that. See my reverts: [10] [11], thx.--Jordi (talk) 10:11, 13 October 2020 (UTC)

Please consider urgently blocking this user for that object. He is already changing the facts again in his home Wikipedia and probably will arrive soon again in Wikidata, too. Remains completely unreasonable.--Jordi (talk) 12:25, 13 October 2020 (UTC)
Here he is, user remains completely unreasonable, please fullprotect this page.--Jordi (talk) 12:33, 13 October 2020 (UTC)
In the discussion of the article in Spanish by Carlo Acutis link, consensus is being reached on whether or not to put the maternal surname, that is why the change of details had been made in Wikidata. Jordi, I ask you to contextualize before coming to report.--MusicologoVzla (talk) 12:35, 13 October 2020 (UTC)
There is no consensus necessary, this is a simple question of facts you cannot prove because your conclusions are erroneous. The person was Italian and simply did not have any maternal surname because Italians do not use second surnames and the paternal surname was his only one, there cannot be reached any consensus to the contrary. Also, the person was not a British citizen as you state. So there are no details you shoud change in Wikidata, please stop to do so immediately. Thx.--Jordi (talk) 13:21, 13 October 2020 (UTC)

Vandalism by anonymous users

I tried to undo some vandalism from anonymous users on multiple items, but my edits are undone again by other anonymous users. Last items Q3238917, Q3611365. Users: 47.60.39.36, 137.101.15.134, 95.60.85.109, 46.25.191.95 (and maybe others). The vandalism is consistently adding false claims to recently died persons like burial at sea or ocean as place of burial, homicide or accident as manner of death, drowning or conjoined twins as cause of death, absurd medical conditions, etc. GeeJee (talk) 10:00, 19 October 2020 (UTC)

Tempoary block for GeertivpBot

GeertivpBot (talkcontribslogs)

GeertivpBot is a bot currently engaged in low-value label fiddling. It is paying no attention whatsoever to maxlag. maxlag has been > 5s for a number of periods this afternoon. As I write, maxlag is 6s. Maxlag recommendtions are afaic to limit edits to 12 per minute when maxlag > 5s - https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Maxlag_parameter - but GeertivpBot ploughs on at the rate of just below 30 per minute.

I did advise the owner of a problem earlier today. No response. diff.

@Geertivp: FYI. --Tagishsimon (talk) 17:52, 18 October 2020 (UTC)

I stopped my Pywikibot User:GeertivpBot, temporarily. I have changed put_throttle = 6 now in user-config.py. Please advise me what parameters I can still adapt. Geertivp (talk) 19:07, 18 October 2020 (UTC)
what is your maxlag set to? BrokenSegue (talk) 19:43, 18 October 2020 (UTC)
maxlag=5 in user-config.py is the parameter which matters here. ---MisterSynergy (talk) 19:53, 18 October 2020 (UTC)
I have now set maxlag=4 (less tenacity than 5) and put_throttle=1 (original value). Those values will be used for the next runs. I have now read mw:API:Etiquette#Use maxlag parameter. I have also discovered the meta-query get userinfo ratelimits. Hoping that subsequent processing will be OK? Geertivp (talk) 08:16, 19 October 2020 (UTC)
There is nothing wrong with maxlag=5 ;-) Besides this, put_throttle=1 is fine (sets your edit rate to max. 1 edit/sec while maxlag<5). You do not need this API query, though; your bot is currently still not ratelimited as far as I am aware, but soon it will be to 90 edits/min maximum (just like all other bots). ---MisterSynergy (talk) 11:30, 19 October 2020 (UTC)

About sockpuppets blocked at enwiki editing Q97661447

Multiple accounts which have been blocked on enwiki as sockpuppets have edited Q97661447 (see w:en:Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/P Tune Studio BD for them all). I'm not sure on the policy about multiple undisclosed alternate accounts editing the same item on wikidata, but would an administrator deal with this as appropriate. The accounts are P Tune Studio BD (talkcontribslogs) (the master at the enwiki spi), Bijoyakash (talkcontribslogs) and Usmita mim (talkcontribslogs). There has been timings overlap (i.e. P Tune Studio BD edited the item, then Usmita mim did and then P Tune Studio BD did). attempting to add a sitelink to WikiProject Webcomics (Q21829798) got me the error

A Wikiproject task force is not an item or property or lexeme. Arlo Barnes (talk) 22:25, 20 October 2020 (UTC)

Which sitelink did you try to add? ---MisterSynergy (talk) 22:27, 20 October 2020 (UTC)
What was the link you were trying to add? The abuse filter logs show you were trying to add a link to a Wikidata item, which is what the filter is meant to prevent DannyS712 (talk) 22:28, 20 October 2020 (UTC)
Oh, I think I see why. Right now I'm the only member of the Wikidata Wikiproject Comics (because I recently started it). As such, the task force for webcomics comprises the same group of people (me). However, on English Wikipedia the sister Wikiproject thrives, so I planned to invite them to help edit on the Wikidata side too. Therefore I anticipated WD having a webcomics TF too and made a page for it, but because it is empty I made it a redirect for now. I went to add wikidata:WikiProject_Comics/Webcomics_work_group as a sitelink with the 'intentional sitelink to redirect' badge, but I guess it being a redirect made it seem to the filter software like I was linking to the target page. Could badges be taken into account, technically speaking? Arlo Barnes (talk) 22:41, 20 October 2020 (UTC)
Why not just make a page about it and then add that? Don't add anything that redirects into a Wikidata item. --- Jura 05:59, 21 October 2020 (UTC)

Hotels

Beyond the item mentioned at Wikidata:Contact_the_development_team/Query_Service_and_search#Hilton_Izmir_-_Removal_Request, would someone look into this and advise them how to go about it? It seems to me that statements get incorrectly deleted and overwritten, as if Wikidata was a webdirectory. Beyond that, I think the item mentioned has a good degree of completeness. --- Jura 06:13, 21 October 2020 (UTC)

Uallv (talk • contribs • deleted contribs • logs • filter log • block user • block log • SUL (for IP: GUC))

First of all, I have tried to reach out to the user before writing this. The user has not responded and made some edit on WD in the time frame. Now to start with the user’s bot account, User:UallvBot, that has been running on WD and created items with data gathered from a website/database.[18] The problem is that the user has not made any request for permission regarding the bot account for this import of “Montreux Jazz Festival” (MJF) IDs. Also, the website (example [19]) clearly states in the footer “Copyright © 2020 Cultural Heritage & Innovation Center, EPFL (formerly Metamedia Center)” so, the user has imported copyrighted content into WD as CC0 (most likely). A lot of the item created is also questionable, concerning WD’s notability criteria’s (example Q99783833). The user has also made some edits regarding MJF from own account with QS, mostly matching MJF IDs with items. This has for music interested WD editors been an extreme load of work for cleaning up. This item is one of the worst where the user has added 14 MJF IDs, based on that they have the same name (song). By manually looking through all the IDs there was none of them that had a connection to the “original song written and composed by Stevie Nicks”. I also recommend reading the users talk page for further inconvenience edits. There is probably much more to bring up in this post, but I hope that the administrators discuss this matter in further detail and makes a statement. Regards Premeditated (talk) 10:54, 16 October 2020 (UTC)

Update: The edits was made by "an agreeement with WikimediaCH". In the time period of the import this was not disclosed anywhere, but has later been fixed.[20][21] It's still a mess and the user has not made any effort in a cleanup. --Premeditated (talk) 07:08, 23 October 2020 (UTC)

Requesting the reversing of a deletion concerning non compliance of the notability policy

Hello there,

i'm user --Evaccari (talk) 18:08, 23 October 2020 (UTC) and i woke up this morning and after less than 12 hours 5 entries i carefully added are gone, deleted by the user Wiki13 (talkcontribslogs) without any possibility of enriching/contesting that.

On the 22th of October the user also deleted a page i added about my persona (i'm a well known italian SEO consultant) citing that i lacked notability and the page lacked references.

I accepted the "verdict"(i didn't put in references, my mistake) and moved on, re-doing the entry, adding references and, in my opinion, being compliant to the second rule of the notability policy:

"It refers to an instance of a clearly identifiable conceptual or material entity. The entity must be notable, in the sense that it can be described using serious and publicly available references."

I've got several public available reference:

  • I co-authored a book (that has been published by a publisher already present on Wikimedia, reference URL: S.F. Flaccovio editore (Q3702595)), made an entry about it and provided the correct ISBN number (properly formatted) and the Google Books page that had my name clearly stated as a co-author (reference URL);
  • I provided an university thesis, hosted in the University of Padova website, in which i was cited and quoted as an expert in the field (reference URL). I found it through Google Scholar (reference URL (last entry));
  • I provided a newspaper article where i was interviewed about my work (reference URL) and was published both online and on paper;
  • I provided references to big industry events where i was called as a speaker (reference URL AND reference URL AND reference URL). These events have very big companies attending them and attract a lot of attention;
  • I created an entry about my popular (in Italy) YouTube SEO related channel (Q100736080) , which isn't very big in absolute numbers but its the most popular in the SEO community in Italy and added a reference to it. It was deleted too.

As i already mentioned i also created entries for the said book i co-authored (Q100733263) and the main author (Q100733747) providing references and making sure the data was correct.

Well, everything was just deleted in a matter of hours without, less than 8, without notice. I think what i submitted doesn't lack the notability, as user Wiki13 said, and want to ask for reconsideration and re-instatement of said pages.

I'd like to add even more references (i was cited in 3 university thesis and in other books) but i don't want to find hours of work deleted for some debatable reson again, if possible. I really respect this platform and wouldn't submit entries if i didn't think they would enrich it.

I don't need "publicity" or to advertise myself to pick up "new clients" (i already have too many, being actually "notable" and popular in the italian SEO community), i just want to put consistent data about my work on the platform and to be disambiguated from an italian olypic sailor with my same name.

Thank you in advance for your time and hard work,

E.V. --Evaccari ( talk) 18:08, 23 October 2020 (UTC)

Given the extra information provided i agree thst deletion was a mistake. --Trade (talk) 18:53, 23 October 2020 (UTC)

Glad to hear that. Is there a chance this will get un-cancelled someway? --Evaccari (talk) 10:23, 24 October 2020 (UTC) @Wiki13:--Trade (talk) 14:39, 24 October 2020 (UTC)

@Trade, Evaccari: Restored both, as references were given. At the moment of the deletion it was not meeting the policy. It had no sitelinks, was structual or described by serious references. Now it fulfills two of the three criteria we have for notability. If there's anything still missing after the two undeletions, please let me know and I'll take a look at it. --Wiki13 (talk) 11:37, 25 October 2020 (UTC)

Hello @Wiki13:, the reference were given for the entity of my persona (Q100735089), which wasnt un-deleted, and for my YouTube Channel too (Q100736080), i thought they would get un-deleted too? That was the point of this request together with the 2 that got un-cancelled (and for which i thank you). --Evaccari (talk) 11:47, 25 October 2020 (UTC)

There are some few "references" provided in the items, but it seems that all of the sources are either under control of the subject themselves, or the usual spammy promotional articles that most other "SEO experts" have as well. We usually delete those items, and I do not see a reason to keep any of the content here. The only purpose of these items is self-promotion. —MisterSynergy (talk) 12:24, 25 October 2020 (UTC)

Hello @MisterSynergy:, i'm glad you voiced your concerns so i can, hopefully, ease them. I'm sure i can better myself as a member of this platform and welcome criticism and chances for improvement.

That said, albeit i would be very happy to be able to claim that, i certainly don't control or have direct influence on:

  • Google Books content where you can find a book i co-authored, with my name clearly stated on the book (there is even a photo of myself);
  • The publisher, historical and already present on the platform, that published said book and provides ISBN and other identifier of said book, very well known in the italian marketing community;
  • University of Padova site that hosts the university thesis that cite and quotes me as an expert of the field;
  • The national newspaper site, one of the most well known in Italy, that interviewed me about my line of work;
  • The very important SEO events sites that list me as a speaker;

Quite frankly don't see "spammy articles", as you defined these indipendent, verifiable sources. There are no articles cited in these references. I avoided putting in any of the many interviews that i was invited to do in other blogs/podcasts to avoid looking "spammy", as you put it. I don't spam and i don't deal spam.

That said i agree these documents are "self referencial": the discussed notability regards myself as an entry on the platform and so, yes, the references are about me: how could i demonstrate notability otherwise?

I didnt ask for the first 2 pages you cited (Q99527542 and Q99528687 to be un-canceled because, even if the podcast show is pretty popular itself, i can see why you would consider these pages, as they were made (i didn't put enough references, absolutely my mistake), not properly built. The second iteration of my entry, Q100735089, was re-made to be compliant with the notability policy, something that i believe was reached with this iteration.

To be honest i really fail to see what "spammy articles" are you referring to: i only see indipendent, verifiable sources of notability. Hopefully i can change your mind or, at least, make other admins agree about this. I don't want to waste anyone time, i know the admins of this platform cares very much about the platform itself and are very vigilant: i wouldn't have posted all the references if it wasn't my belief they would be instrumental as reference to assess notability.

I know my area of experise has quite the rotten reputation but really, i wouldn't be writing so much and being so focused and hard-working if this was a spam attempt. I would move in a very different way and wouldn't try to discuss things with you admins which i, as i already said, really much respect.

I hope we can sort this out because i'd really like to enrich the platform and disambiguate from the sailor with my same name. --Evaccari (talk) 14:23, 25 October 2020 (UTC)

@Evaccari: To disambiguate you from the sailor of the same name the item for the YouTube channel is not really needed, right? Usually items for YouTube channels are only created for very big channels. By the way describing "gelocal.it" as a "national newspaper site" is clever, because one reads "national newspaper" implying importance although it is actually a collection of regional newspapers.--Pyfisch (talk) 09:47, 27 October 2020 (UTC)

IagoQnsi - suboptimal US college basketball players upload.

Not very sure how to handle a user - IagoQnsi (talkcontribslogs) - who is on a mission to add all US college basketball players to wikidata; has loaded up ~70k items to date. Two main issues: these people are all male - at least, the ones IagoQnsi's coding as playing in a men's league - but IagoQnsi is refusing to give the items a P21 statement. And they are all basketball players, but IagoQnsi has decided, from about edit 35k, not to add a P106=Basketball player statement. The consequence is either to accept, say, 100k obviously and avoidably suboptimal records; or to follow IagoQnsi around with a bucket, sweeping up the mess. Or to cause IagoQnsi's upload to be paused by a temporary non-punative block until they have remediated the deficiency of their work.

The question really is, is there a minimum standard for mass data ontakes, or do we accept mass creation of poor quality records; and if so, why?

@IagoQnsi: fyi. --Tagishsimon (talk) 09:33, 27 October 2020 (UTC)

There is nothing wrong with the data I'm uploading; it just lacks those two fields, which are easily added later. Lesson learned that I should have included them, but I hardly think a block is in order. OpenRefine doesn't handle stopping and starting very well, so I'd rather just update the items after the upload finishes; I've told you this on my talk page. I don't appreciate the characterization of me as a stubborn lone wolf; I've been very responsive whenever you've left me talk page messages. –IagoQnsi (talk) 12:03, 27 October 2020 (UTC)

Q81448592 (Gérard Gertoux)

Please examine the problems raised at Talk:Q81448592. They have given rise to two reverts.

@Jairon Levid Abimael Caál Orozco:
Theodoxa (talk) 10:41, 27 October 2020 (UTC)
User theodoxa, who has been blocked on en.wiki, says that God's name is not Jehovah, and that some fans are clinging to pronouncing the name Jehovah: "It would be interesting to have an article in Wikipedia about the curious case of the invented form "Jehovah": how it came about, how it came to be abandoned by scholars in general and how some fanatics still cling to the idea" [30]. What a pity that personal feelings are involved in editing! Gertoux is one of the contemporary proponents who propose that in the 1st century the pronunciation Jehovah was the one used, so the user on different occasions comes to Gertoux's page editing to denigrate the author. Theodoxa in conjunction with C. Chanson have come in bad faith to make destructive edits. C. Chanson has a website, where editors who hate Jehovah's Witnesses can register and edit. There is denigrating claims about Jehovah's Witnesses on this website, and this site has a page exclusive page dedicated to Gertoux, where there is denigrating claims about him. These users are busy wanting to make wikipedia their website, and C. Chanson has been in trouble for it.
Among the edits I reverted, there is one that is on Gertoux's education. In academic major, I deleted "Hebrew alphabet" and put "Hebrew" because Hebrew alphabet gives an error, and in ORCID, it read that Gertoux get a master in Hebrew. Also I reverted the occupation "hebraist", from National Libraries because these users insist that the information has been taken from a page of their book, but leaving it as the users had left it, it also presented an error, and the link no longer worked. Not only is Gertoux called a Hebraist there, but I'm already a little tired of months of discussion with these users, who go from wikipedia to wikipedia with one purpose.--Jairon Levid Abimael Caál Orozco (talk) 02:44, 28 October 2020 (UTC)
1. Is it correct to present four different catalogues in support of the statement that Gertoux is a Hebraist, when each and every one of the catalogues simply informs of (without endorsing) a claim made on the cover (blurb) of one book by Gertoux, the real source of the claim but not mentioned as a source?
2. In spite of the statement by Jairon Levid Abimael Caál Orozco that he has put "Hebrew" in place of "Hebrew alphabet", Wikidata still gives "Hebrew alphabet" (!) as the "subject (Gertoux) studied at college/university". The study (presumably of the Hebrew language, not merely of the alphabet) consisted of a ten-day intensive source, what the French call a "stage".
The problem has been brought here, because Jairon Levid Abimael Caál Orozco ignored the questions raised at Talk:Q81448592 and merely reverted. Theodoxa (talk) 09:19, 28 October 2020 (UTC)

User:Uallv - Montreux Jazz Festival mass upload

Without wishing to be the grinch, I think we need to discuss Uallv (talkcontribslogs) and their recent Montreux Jazz Festival mass upload. In short, just about everything to do with this creation/alteration of circa 48k records seems to be wrong.

Uallv's items point to records of the performance of a song at a festival. But they're being coded as P31=song (Q7366) rather than P31="performance of a song". For completeness, even the concert interludes are being added, again as instance of a song rather than instance of a toilet break - example Q99824885, but there are very many of these.

Montreux Jazz Festival song ID (P8302) values are being added haphazardly to existing items based, it seems, on a sting match of the song title; so that an item for a single such as Working Class Hero (Q958795), part of John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band (Q603000) is now apparently the same thing - https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q958795#P8302 - as Marianne Faithful's three renditions of it - https://mjf-database.epfl.ch/public/songs/15986 &c. See https://w.wiki/iyi for the extent.

MusicBrainz work ID (P435) values are being added haphazardly to Montreux Jazz Festival performances, for example, for Q99826293 pointing to https://musicbrainz.org/work/441c485e-33e3-4b54-a36d-0a56aaf3ab66 (i.e. pointing to a parent instance of a song, where musicbrainz has discrete & different IDs for the recorded performances of the song) ... which is to say, the wikidata record is pointing at the wrong thing entirely. It's not always clear, beyond a string match, whether a musicbrainz link makes any sense. Q99826231, a performance by Jade Bird https://mjf-database.epfl.ch/public/songs/162619 is now linked to https://musicbrainz.org/work/c15f4695-91f1-3c40-aeca-9e73b33cd318 which seems to be a Cat Power rendition of a Chan Marshall song. Based on a string match of a sing title. Nothing more.

So. I raise this here, in the first instance, because the ontake of 48k records and/or alterations to existing items, *all* of which seem to be flawed or deeply flawed, represents an existential threat to the quality of music items on wikidata; the longer the problem goes unaddressed, the more likelihood there is of issues being compounded by unsighted users merging items based on Uallv's GIGO input.

The large-scale issue might be solved by running appropriate SPARQL and fixing issues, which, obviously, will require a significant input of time, and competent analysis of the issues. I suspect I've just scratched the surface here. Or it might be solved by reverting all of Uallv's edits.

I'm sure Uallv has worked in good faith and I bear them no ill will; there but for the grace of god go I, &c. But they have created a compete buggers muddle of a problem, which I think warrants discussion here rather than simply on their talk page. --Tagishsimon (talk) 10:34, 27 October 2020 (UTC)

My sympathies, since I understand you have only recently recovered from a mass-upload of poorly referenced basketball players. No idea how to help, but thanks for highlighting these to the wider community. Jane023 (talk) 11:54, 27 October 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for bringing this important issue to our attention. We are addressing the problems right now, and will get back to you on our next steps and how to solve it. --Debora (WMCH) (talk) 11:08, 28 October 2020 (UTC)

Ok it is evident that uploading songs I made a lot of mistakes. I propose you two steps to solve this problem and avoid a lot of work to the admins:

  1. I remove my contributions to the preexisting songs, reverting the modifications I made. I start immediately. If you want to check what I’m doing I will publish a list on pages I’m working on a subpage of my user-page.
  2. Regarding the new item created you suggest to change the instance type from “song” to “performance of a song”. Is this a feasible way for you to mantain on Wikidata these items? Which Q would be the best to represent the "performance of a song" concept? --Uallv (talk) 14:18, 28 October 2020 (UTC)
    1. In fact, "performance of a song" as such doesn't exist, as far as I understand, but it may be a subclass or even cohincide with musical performance (Q6942562). I tried to add a few aliases and translations under the assumption that people here agree that "performance of a song" is included in musical performance (Q6942562). --FedericoMorando (talk) 09:45, 29 October 2020 (UTC)

There has been added multiple suggestion to add more translations since May 2020 on MediaWiki talk:Gadget-autoEdit.js. Could an administrators, stewards or interface editors add some of the suggestions into the gadget? Thanks. -Premeditated (talk) 14:09, 29 October 2020 (UTC)

This requires an interface administrator, and shouldn't be done by a steward or global interface editor since there are local users who can deal with it DannyS712 (talk) 14:48, 30 October 2020 (UTC)

@Hasley:、@Hazard-SJ:、@MisterSynergy: This is a user who often changes better English descriptions into over-simplified ones (almost 90%). I know his edits may not be vandalism. However it's very tiring to check his every edit and my words on User talk:118.136.4.35 seems not useful to change this situation Could you help? Thanks. --迴廊彼端 (talk) 11:10, 6 November 2020 (UTC)
This does indeed not look okay. As the anonymous user is difficult to contact, I have blocked the main namespace for 118.136.0.0/19 (should be sufficient) and invited them to show up here for a discussion. Once the editor understands the problem, we can remove the range block again. —MisterSynergy (talk) 12:26, 6 November 2020 (UTC)

    2. If it's always a live performance, seeAlso concert (Q182832). --FedericoMorando (talk) 09:51, 29 October 2020 (UTC)

I also edited three items with more detailed and accurate informations. Here they are: Q99750652, Hammertones (Q99771784) and Chicken Shift (chte) (Q99771418). What is suggest is:
All these tasks can now be done easily with QuickStatements. --Uallv (talk) 22:48, 2 November 2020 (UTC)
Please note that there has been made a deletion request for close to 41k items on the RfD page in regard to this subject. I have put that request on hold for now, as I want to know if @Uallv: intends to fix this whole batch so that it will meet our notability policy. If after some time the items still do not meet that policy I am inclined to delete them. --Wiki13 (talk) 22:01, 6 November 2020 (UTC)
I am willing to edit the items in order to satisfy notability policy. I made a proposal in this discussion. I'm am waiting a feedback from someone of the Wikidata:WikiProject Music or some other user to start editing. I also wrote on their page Wikidata talk:WikiProject Music#Improving_Montreux_Jazz_Festival_Songs_Upload, @Premeditated, Tagishsimon, Flor WMCH, Debora (WMCH), Jura1:

From our side (WMCH), the proposal from Uallv sounds good. Please publish the list of edits you are going to do in QuickStatement, in order for the community to be verified and approved.--Debora (WMCH) (talk) 13:03, 10 November 2020 (UTC)
Hi, I wrote a discussion about Uallv in mid October 2020 without anyone making any comments. So, I'm glad that Tagishsimon got people interested. Uallv has shown little to no interest in fixing the around 41k bot created items, before WMCH got informed about the circumstances. Uallv has also broken multiple policies, without any restrictions from the Administrators and/or Bureaucrats. This makes it looks like it's not problematic to import 41k items that is Copyrighted (at the time), missing bot request, not notable and not disclosing that it is paid edits (at the time). Allowing this behaviour gives the impression that polices like Terms of Use, Wikidata:Bots, and Wikidata:Notability are not important. I will call it vandalism.
How items like Q99783833 will ever meet the notability policy is an interesting question. There is also created items for existing songs on WD. They has to be merged, because of the extremely bad importing. Using MusicBrainz work ID (P435) on a musical performance (Q6942562) item makes no sense unless the MB entry is connected to the Montreux Jazz Festival performance (and not the standard song). The items should be built like this example: Super Bowl LIV halftime show (Q74108782). --Premeditated (talk) 14:37, 12 November 2020 (UTC)
I'm really interested in solving this issue, as a matter of fact I already manually reverted all 1800 edits on preexisting items. Now I'm asking admins' opinion about my proposal of improvements. I also prepared the list of edits that should be done to fix the upload. I also added the removal of the MusicBrainz work ID (P435) considering the fact that with this modification is now wrong. You can find the list of modifications in this pages MJF_quickstatement_list_1, MJF_quickstatement_list_2 MJF_quickstatement_list_3, MJF_quickstatement_list_4, MJF_quickstatement_list_5, MJF_quickstatement_list_6, MJF_quickstatement_list_7. --Uallv (talk) 20:33, 13 November 2020 (UTC)
This does not solve items like Q99783833. And you are not solving the huge amount of duplicate items you have crated like: Christian Mazzalai (Q99596736)Christian Mazzalai (Q64176254), Deck d'Arcy (Q99596720)Deck d'Arcy (Q64176251). All of the title has also language code und. The items still does not give any useful information other then a connection to a concert item, that is linking to duplicated participant (P710). --Premeditated (talk) 12:28, 14 November 2020 (UTC)
To solve the un-merged issue I created a subpage (User:Uallv/MJF musician match list) with a list of musicians that has a possible candidate for the merge. I also merged the two candidates you proposed. In many cases I did not merged entities because there were not enough information to determine if the two entities are the same. I'll check again the entities to further improve the quality.
I choose the language und because it is impossible to automatically determine the language of a song title. Lastly the unknown songs were part of the database and were added to describe the performance. I'm open to discussion about that items. Of course we should consider that some of that titles are the real titles of a song. --Uallv (talk) 16:41, 16 November 2020 (UTC)
