Help needed

I'm not sure whether this is the correct noticeboard or not, but I'm extremely confused.

I uploaded an Image onto Commons (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Evangelical_Johannes_Church_Hofheim.jpg), when I was supposed to enter Wikidata entries in the image, I looked up Evangelische Johanneskirche (Evangelical Johannes Church), the only item that came up was item:Q106498993, which in the German description said "Kirchengebäude in Großheide" meaning Church Building in Großheide, while mine is in Hofheim am Taunus. I came here to create a new item for the Church in Hofheim (Whcih is also in 2 other photos on commons https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hofheim,_Evangelische_Kirche.JPG and https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hofheim,_Evangelische_Kirche,_Turm.JPG)

Though it seems like I created something else, a "Lexeme" (Lexeme:L1218705) which should probably now be deleted, because I don't understand what I did and made a mistake.

Could somebody explain to me how to create an item/point me to the correct noticeboard? Crainsaw (talk) 12:38, 2 December 2023 (UTC)

@Crainsaw: You probably hit "Create a new lexeme" instead of "Create a new item". You can do that on Special:NewItem. It is worth putting some keywords to Special:Search in case the item already existed. --Matěj Suchánek (talk) 13:25, 2 December 2023 (UTC)
I searched on Wikidata but couldn't find it, so I created a new item, but realized the German Wikipedia page about the church was already connected to another item, to which I could add the images. My apologies for the hassle, but could you also delete item:Q123613884? Crainsaw (talk) 13:51, 2 December 2023 (UTC)

He or she has been selfelected Admin. This is why Wikipedia lt has only 214.500 articles : https://lt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pagrindinis_puslapis With this vandal user any new article is deleted. Final decision is yours. --138.99.239.142 14:21, 4 December 2023 (UTC)

Escape Velocity / Cosmic Velocity German

The english escape velocity site currently does not Link to the german Fluchtgeschwindigkeit site, but the cosmic velocity site (which redirects to escape velocity) does. It would make a lot more sese if:

Escape Velocity -> Fluchtgeschwindigkeit (Raumfahrt)

Cosmic Velocity -> Kosmische Geschwindigkeit (These are both redirects in English and German)

Maybe Just Merge Cosmic Velocity and Escape Velocity, it seems like they mean the same thing.

Thanks! Root4222 (talk) 17:12, 3 December 2023 (UTC)

They cannot be merged since the sites to which they have sitelinks aren’t disjoint. I tried to change the German sitelinks the way you suggested, but it seems that as an IP I’m not allowed to remove the “Fluchtgeschwindigkeit (Raumfahrt)” sitelink from cosmic velocity (Q4234997) (which has to be done before it can be added to escape velocity (Q166530)). --2A02:8108:50BF:C694:4197:A16E:4D80:1B76 17:45, 3 December 2023 (UTC)

Report concerning piracy websites, User:Hazraaa, and User:103.215.224.171

Please forgive me (and correct me) if I make a faux pas here, I'm not nearly as versed in Wikidata protocol and etiquette as I am en.WP. This is concerning Q65080690 and Q60773936, piracy websites. They fairly constantly get additions of links to clone sites on en.WP, and that seems to have spilled over here. The above user and IP have been adding links as the official websites despite there being no evidence that these are in any way official. In addition, these are piracy sites hosting, or at least linking to violations of copyrighted works. I couldn't find a policy or guideline directly concerning that, but I assume that for legal reasons we shouldn't be linking to them even if they were somehow "official". Could somebody more experienced take a look since my warnings have had no effect? Thanks! Apparition11 (talk) 15:51, 8 December 2023 (UTC)

Nonsense /simple translations

You might want to nuke the „translations“ by Special:Contributions/24.244.23.164 and Special:Contributions/173.183.113.24. That's an xwiki LTA, most of the page creations are not simple English but just poorly written, e.g. „Wikidata does not have of an executive publisher or of a publishing joint...“ [2] (original text: „Wikidata does not have an executive editor or editorial board...“ [3]) or „that at Wikidata do not have to find valuable and exact information; at most of the cases, will find it“ [4] (original text: „that you will not find valuable and accurate information in Wikidata; much of the time you will“ [5]). Johannnes89 (talk) 22:32, 17 December 2023 (UTC)

„Requests for the law confirmed“ [6] instead of „Requests for the confirmed right“ [7] is almost amusing, if this wasn't long-term & xwiki abuse. Johannnes89 (talk) 22:35, 17 December 2023 (UTC)

Undeletion request

Hey Admins, can you please assist in undeleting the following items.

We are tracking them in the Name Suggestion Index project. The items in NSI are generally retail chains, health clinics, transit systems, or other points of interest which are found in OpenStreetMap. These are generally entities which exist in the real world more than 50 times, so we consider them notable.

Thanks for your help and for all you do!

Phone number spam

I've figured out a recurring pattern of adding false phone number (P1329) to the items about airlines. The IP address is changing, it is always a new user and a trustworthy looking reference is added, but the phone numbers do not match the reference. For example, https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q32245&diff=2025013122&oldid=2009171749, https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q4548&diff=2024022778&oldid=2019954579, https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q8766&diff=2010495526&oldid=2009502513, https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q69906&diff=2025011639&oldid=2020963779, https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q9325&diff=2024008072&oldid=2019954291 etc. This could be vandalism, spam or worse, perhaps part of a vishing scheme. Unfortunately I'm not sure what to do when there are different entries and different IP addresses. Unfortunately, I'm not sure how to deal with this because of changing IP address and mulitple items affected. Jklamo (talk) 15:12, 6 December 2023 (UTC)

We could create a filter that prevented new users from adding or changing phone number (P1329). I do see new users creating items for businesses, including (presumably) valid telephone numbers, so that would be collateral damage (assuming you believe that activity to be valuable). I think we have a general problem that it's not at all straightforward for us to verify telephone numbers. As a softer measure, we could create a tagging filter and monitor. Bovlb (talk) 17:45, 6 December 2023 (UTC)
More recent cases: https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q9325&diff=2026974328&oldid=2024763148, https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q822614&diff=2027011396&oldid=2026991971, https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q4548&diff=prev&oldid=2027005539, same pattern. In some cases I've been "reverted", which doesn't seem like normal vandalism anymore. I am afraid that the vishing option is more plausible. Please create the above filter. Collateral damage seems minor to me, it's mostly just spam items anyway. Jklamo (talk) 19:38, 10 December 2023 (UTC)
Today three reverts needed at Spirit Airlines (Q1190598). Jklamo (talk) 21:44, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
It seems to have shifted to companies in the health care business, see https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q677488&diff=2029811688&oldid=2007068948, https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q642271&diff=2029810902&oldid=1975822000, https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q642271&diff=2029810902&oldid=1975822000 etc. Jklamo (talk) 22:35, 15 December 2023 (UTC)
I have created Special:AbuseFilter/247. Right now, it takes no action, just adds the tag "new-user-phone-number". I'll monitor it, and in a few days we can upgrade it to "prevent". Bovlb (talk) 23:17, 15 December 2023 (UTC)
Tag Report
One false positive so far. Bovlb (talk) 16:22, 16 December 2023 (UTC)
Based on the logs so far, I'm not seeing any edits that are definitely wrong, although all are hard to verify. Given that, I don't think I can set this filter to "prevent", unless there is a strong community consensus that the benefit would outweigh the cost. Hopefully the tag will allow us to patrol such changes more efficiently. Bovlb (talk) 16:57, 18 December 2023 (UTC)
Yes, things seem to have calmed down. I don't think there is a need for preventing editation at the moment. Thanks for the filter. Jklamo (talk) 19:55, 18 December 2023 (UTC)

Erik den yngre (talk • contribs • deleted contribs • logs • filter log • block user • block log • SUL (for IP: GUC)) has a long and extensive history of harrassment of Aage Borchgrevink, that has received attention even outside of Wikipedia. He clearly has some kind of beef or "problem" with Borchgrevink. This is detailed on the talk page Talk:Q4661195. His main activity there is the attempt to remove the meticulously well-sourced fact that Borchgrevink is a human rights activist (Q1476215), that has three high-quality sources (including one scholarly one) – Aage Borchgrevink is indeed a well-known human rights activist in Norway who has worked with the Norwegian Helsinki Committee on human rights in Russia for the past three decades. The removal is plain vandalism and started right after the invasion of Ukraine (Borchgrevink is known for his critical analyses of human rights abuses in Russia).

We've had similar problems on Wikipedia, as also detailed on the talk page Talk:Q4661195, including the attempts to add claims such as "He is widely known in Norway for spreading propaganda for Washington", "he focuses on justifying military campaigns" etc.etc. The campaign of harrassment against Borchgrevink on Wikipedia and now Wikidata started on a Norwegian website called "Steigan.no", a known purveyor of Russian propaganda and conspiracy theories. --PetterLøkd (talk) 18:27, 18 December 2023 (UTC)

Report concerning User:Hmmmdhin and User:Gggggk

Reasons: Account "Hmmmdhin" has been blocked indefinitely in both idwiki and enwiki as it is a sockaccount of Eiskrahablo (again). For user "Gggggk", although has not been confirmed as sockaccount (yet), the contributions already have some similarities with previous socks as of DUCK:

  • Repetitive username
  • The first edit of the second account is literary seconds after indefinite block on first one
  • Similarities between both accounts to edit nusantaras Wikipedias [ace, bjn, ban, mad, id, jv, etc.] items
  • This might be some sort of coincidence: topics they're currently edits is similar (notice on Gazal which is mentioned in the confirmed-to-be-sock edit)

Requests for unblock Q123688229, Q123757765

Hello, I want to request an item to be unlocked because the admin who blocked the first one refused me, in my opinion, absolutely categorically, without even going into the essence.

My goal is to add marketers and organizations to the service so that more knowledge about them is available. I want to add well-known marketers, based on their social profiles and activity. I'm a newbie, so my first topic that I created was failure — I admit this and understand that this is entirely my fault. Furthermore, I wanted to create a second entity, not knowing that I shouldn’t do that — but I filled it out absolutely correctly, provided all the links to social profiles, etc.

The niche in which I fill marketers is small, so it may seem that they are not very popular, but within this niche they are experts, tool owners, etc. https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q109247961 — for example, this marketer is very famous in Germany, but in general he is not considered a popular person. I decided that since Olaf is here, I should try to add marketers who I consider famous, with evidence of course.

Regarding notability, https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Notability — I believe that the second and third points are observed, because I'm going to grow entities that will need these topics. And I will comply with the first point by providing links to Wikipedia in the article.

I filled in the number of subscribers on X (formerly known as Twitter) (about 5-6 thousand — https://twitter.com/rossoshanski), as well as OrсID https://orcid.org/0009-0007-9572-3349 — which is proof that Q123688229 is the author, and he is real and have an education. And he got knowledge panel — https://g.co/kgs/VwAF2W. More information here — https://rossoshansky.com/.

https://minsport.saratov.gov.ru/u/мероприятия.doc He also spoke at a government forum to educate people about his niche.

He is also a speaker for the Rush Academy course.

And there is also a little on the YouTube channel of the Rush Analytics tool

The company where he works now is represented in Skolkovo, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skolkovo_Innovation_Center, https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1091186. Prove: https://navigator.sk.ru/orn/1123579?ysclid=lq6el38k7764279958

Hi, sorry, I didn't mean to seem rude, just bc. I'm new, I don't fully know the processes, how the discussion takes place. I try, I add what I know) Average Person 2 (talk) 18:08, 18 December 2023 (UTC)
This request has been open for a week, and no-one has spoke in support of undeletion, so I think we can close this as no consensus to undelete. Bovlb (talk) 19:45, 22 December 2023 (UTC)
@Bovlb Hello, to be honest, I don’t see any activity in other topics, it feels like no one really speaks out anywhere as intended. Can we assume that no one spoke in favor of deletion? :)
If no one comments, maybe we can discuss it with you? Because it’s strange for me that the person whom I indicated as a reference was deleted, although he had been there for a very long time — as soon as I indicated him, his profile was demolished. https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q109247961
And Scott Jehl, whom I indicated, was not even touched. https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q123821224. But it’s only being supplemented. In my opinion, all these people should be present, because they contributed to SEO and marketing, just from different countries.
It just feels like the rules are perceived by everyone in their own way and there is no objectivity of significance. For a person who is far from marketing and close to poetry, for example, all this will be bullshit that means nothing. Especially if he is an admin.
So you are my last hope @Bovlb — I don’t know how I can contribute to the general database if I don’t understand the rules of the game. Average Person 2 (talk) 07:09, 23 December 2023 (UTC)
All seems like spam/advertising to me. It doesn't help that the info for ORCID has the subject themselves as source. I don't see reason to undelete. --Lymantria (talk) 10:52, 23 December 2023 (UTC)
I'm sorry you're having a frustrating time here. I'll offer some specific facts in response to some of your points and then give some suggestions for you.
  • Q123688229 was proposed for deletion at Wikidata:Requests_for_deletions/Archive/2023/12/06#Q123688229 by a well-established member of our community, and it was deleted after review by an administrator. This may not be the level of discussion you're looking for here, but that's two people who have already weighed in on the question before you posted your appeal. The deleting administrator has also reviewed the case based on your second version of the item. There's really no consensus here to overturn those assessments.
  • Regarding Q109247961, I can't tell what led to Wikidata:Requests_for_deletions/Archive/2023/12/16#Q109247961, a deletion proposal by a different well-established member of our community, assessed and endorsed by a different administrator. It's possibly that it was a consequence of the item being mentioned here, but that does not mean that there was anything nefarious going on. Public discussion invites scrutiny. Old items can be reviewed for notability; indeed there are probably a lot of older items that did not get proper review at the time, and our policies around notability have evolved.
  • Regarding Scott Jehl (Q123821224), if you feel that this item does not meet our notability criteria, you are welcome to propose it for deletion at WD:RFD. The fact that I may have supplemented it with an identifier does not make it immune to deletion. Indeed, I have made many thousands of contributions to items that ended up getting deleted. As administrators, we're not trying to play "gotcha" with item deletion, but considering the best possible case for each item.
If you want some suggestions on how to contribute to Wikidata, there are a number of ways you can do that. One of the best ways for a new editor to find their feet is to look at existing items and find a way to improve them. For example, try clicking on Special:Random and see if you can find any way to improve the item you find. Regarding item creation, you could start by writing articles in an appropriate Wikipedia (securing N1). Alternatively, you could create items for entities where you can find good references (e.g. two solid articles in national newspapers) and identifiers (thus securing N2). Good faith edits with less than 50 % correctness. No reaction on talk page. Stop him editing for a short time, please. Like already mentioned, not all edits are incorrect, but probably nobody has the time to identify the few good ones. So my suggestion is, that all edits from today on (23 Dec 2023) should be reverted, older edits look fine. Florentyna (talk) 17:29, 23 December 2023 (UTC)

Last time the admin told me, that I was too slow when reporting here (what I do really very seldom, i.e. 2 or 3 times per year), because in the meantime were added 5000 wrong statements. Nevertheless, who checks the user's additions from today, who will revert if needed? --Florentyna (talk) 19:13, 23 December 2023 (UTC)

Re: sv:WP:KAW#Smitingen

@Roufu, Kitayama, Ternarius, Yger, Adjoka, KonstapelKatt, Adville, Tostarpadius, Lucie Manette et al are on svwp discussing to set a limit to my block on that project. Your talk is notifying me, and I have only the option to respond here on Wikidata where my activity is declining, but not really finished yet. And my brutal response is: I have no interest in the project of yours and my activity here have very limited effect to you!!! I have no desire to end my block on your project! Låt stå!

Who Dan Koel is, I have not a clue! I can assure you I have nothing to do with him/her! Feel free to send the hounds after me there!

If I need your help, I will notify you from here like I did with Roufu! So end that talk of yours and send it to your recycle bin! If you want me something, you know where my personal talk_page is. Smitingen (talk) 20:18, 29 December 2023 (UTC)

There is already a clear consensus among us admins on the Swedish Wikipedia for you to stay blocked. Cross-wiki pinging is not appreciated, and this is not the place to discuss issues on other wikis. I have therefore blocked you for a week. EPIC (talk) 20:59, 29 December 2023 (UTC)
@EPIC: Thank you for blocking the user for disruptive editing. Even though your actions is to shorten the block of the user, that's a good way that a user that their block will be shortened a little bit, such as reducing the duration from 1 week (which is 7 days) to 3 days, so the user may learn from what they did wrong. Recent crop of new Nigerian items

There seems to be a lot of new item creation recently by new users where the items appear to relate to Nigeria (Q1033), often specifically Gombe State (Q376241). The item quality largely ranges from empty to not establishing notability. None of the users ever seem to respond to messages. Does anyone know what's going on here? Is this a poorly-run school project? I don't suspect anything nefarious here, just incompetence. These people are wasting both their time and ours. How can we stop this?

Some examples:

@Bukky658, @Semmy1960: Is this your part of the world? CC @LiAnna (Wiki Ed) Bovlb (talk) 22:13, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
Hi @Bovlbthanks for bringing my attention to this. This is North-East of my part of the world and maybe link to this project led by @SadiqY56 based on the edit made on https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q123784444 by @Muhammed 000. Bukky658 (talk) 16:09, 20 December 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for that. I note that SadiqY56 has fewer than 500 contributions here, most of which have been deleted. See also Wikidata:Requests_for_deletions/Archive/2023/02/13#Bulk_deletion_request_of_items_by_User:SadiqY56. I see that their last two item creations, within the last fortnight, were an empty item and Q123758652, an item that does not establish notability, has a poor description, and poor aliases. This is on a par with the other poor item creations reported above.
I'm sure they mean well, and I'm all for improving our representation of traditionally under-documented parts of the world, but it doesn't look like they have gotten past the "rookie" stage themselves, and they don't have a good enough understanding of the project to be teaching other people how to create items. I wasn't aware that the foundation was handing out grant money to people with no track record of quality editing. Bovlb (talk) 17:29, 20 December 2023 (UTC)

@ SadiqY56, Gwanki, Bembety, Usmanagm: These are the four named participants on the grant application mentioned above. Bovlb (talk) 17:51, 26 December 2023 (UTC)
Hello @Bovlb,
I am writing to address a recent discussion regarding my purported involvement in the Nafada Wikipedia project. While my name is listed on the grant application, I want to clarify that I was not invited to participate in the project, and I have no knowledge of its implementation or outcomes. It has been brought to my attention that there are concerns about new users creating problematic articles on Wikidata in connection to the Nafada project. I want to explicitly state that I am not part of the project, I did not facilitate any activities, and I lack familiarity with the specific details of its execution. I value the commitment of Wikidata administrators to uphold content quality, and I want to ensure there is no confusion regarding my role. If you have any further questions or require additional information, please feel free to reach out.Thank you for your understanding. Gwanki (talk) 18:42, 26 December 2023 (UTC)
@Gwanki Thanks for following up. Given that you are mentioned four times in the grant application, and you also endorsed the project, you may wish to add a note there clarifying your role.
But the main point here is that we're not trying to point fingers or assign blame; we're trying to fix things. We can't tell how many of these editors are associated with this project, but it gives a very bad impression of WMF projects if we have people organizing outreach, giving inadequate training, and then all of the contributions end up being deleted. Some of these items may, in fact, represent notable entities, but the research effort has to start with the contributing editor. If all of our attempts to communicate and inform fall on deaf ears, then we have no choice but to delete them all. This makes the whole thing a sad waste of both their time and ours. Bovlb (talk) 18:53, 26 December 2023 (UTC)
Hi, @Bovlb!
Thanks for your efforts at keeping with the activities of the new participants around Gombe region.
I would make efforts to reach out to project organizers m:Wikimedia Awareness in Nafada to find a better way the editors can improve on their Items creation to avoid creating extra workloads for you guys.
I would want to believe the organizers have received pings but might be avoiding responses in order not to take responsibility for their actions.
Thanks for patience and willingness to help and support newbies. Regards! Atibrarian (talk) 22:24, 26 December 2023 (UTC)
Dear @Bovlb
Firstly, thank you for your efforts on this and for the follow-up. I want to assure you that everything you've suggested is being implemented. I just want to clarify a few points here:
1. Regarding @Gwanki's comment, which we recently communicated, he understood that he wasn't exempted from the project. Initially proposed as an offline facilitator, due to budget constraints, he was reassigned in the project's budget to serve as an online facilitator. The project was in the process of delivering its first part when the issue occurred, thereby prompting us to ask participants to wait while we rectify the problems. Consequently, Gwanki was expected to conduct the online session and follow-up. However, due to the ongoing issues, everything was put on hold for the rectification process. I have just communicated with Gwanki and we'll be requesting an extension of the project to address these issues.
2. Most of the participants causing the issues didn't attend the physical sessions. Some were introduced to the Wikidata by friends who attended only the introductory sessions but aren't yet finished with their training themselves let alone teach others. Hence, the disruptive edits. I assure you we've identified the root causes and are handling everything amicably. There will be no further disruptions from the participants.
3. I've already explained to the participants to hold on with any contributions until issues are resolved. As such, it's advisable for you to proceed with mass deleting the items. They will receive proper guidance to make new edits that meet the criteria. I've discussed this with Gwanki, who will lead the process, and I am confident the issues will be resolved.
Thank you for your efforts on this, and I am committed to ensuring that these issues are effectively resolved. Will keep you updated of any developments! SadiqY56 (talk) 11:38, 27 December 2023 (UTC)

There was no consensus for this addition, see Wikidata talk:Main Page. Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 19:41, 26 December 2023 (UTC)
What consensus, where are the rules? The entry with the number Q123456789 (T:294) has been in the news since 15 November 2023, what do the rules say about it? As I said, there are so few milestones that the occasional news item is more likely to liven up the main page than harm anyone. I'm curious to see if the statement "Feel free to add to this list." is true. --Quick-O-Mat (talk) 02:22, 27 December 2023 (UTC)
A text added by a random person in 2012 is not significant. If there are no rules, there is a default catchall that applies namely WD:UCS. And I would be more sympathetic to you if you did not namecall Sjoerd the Bruin "the Grinch" as you did [here]. Funny as it may be, name-calling is technically not considered appropriate, so please do not do this. Infrastruktur (talk) 14:13, 27 December 2023 (UTC)

Mass undeletion of talk pages of deleted properties

Per the discussion archived here can an admin (with a bot?) please undelete the talk pages of all deleted properties?

In future, when properties are deleted, their talk pages should be left in situ. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 12:36, 24 December 2023 (UTC)

I would be willing to do this, but let's please figure out in which condition we want to keep those pages. Keep them fully protected, or semi protected, or unprotected? What do we do with the {{Property documentation}} template that does not really work without the property page itself, and several other things that might not be there anymore such as links to deleted covi report pages? —MisterSynergy (talk) 12:58, 24 December 2023 (UTC)
I have no strong views (@Fuzheado, Vojtěch Dostál: do you?). Perhaps if someone will undelete a couple of examples, we can experiment and see what works best. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 13:47, 28 December 2023 (UTC)
@Pigsonthewing @MisterSynergy No strong views either, but I'd say that it would be best if we prevent further editing/commenting on them and perhaps replace the {{Property documentation}} with a simple banner explaining that the discussion page is kept for 'archivation purposes'.
The "Grinch" thing was only meant as a joke, because he really doesn't want to see the surname "Tannemann" in the news at Christmas time and accuses me of being serotonin-driven [here]. --Quick-O-Mat (talk) 14:31, 27 December 2023 (UTC)

This user has made a very large number of changes, in a relatively small amount of time, through the Wikidata game. I don’t have the time to go through them all myself right now, but the ones that I’ve taken a look at appear to be incorrect (with the speed at which edits were made, I might also question whether or not it would even be possible for due care and attention to be given when making the changes). I don’t know if some sort of mass rollback may be advisable, but in any event I wanted to bring someone else’s attention to this, as right now I’m unable to go through the editor’s contribs myself.

I think that this discussion is resolved and can be archived. If you disagree, don't hesitate to replace this template with your comment. EPIC (talk) 11:07, 2 January 2024 (UTC)

Delete Main Page

[[Main Page]] (not Wikidata:Main Page) had been deleted since 2013 (hacks are bad), but was undeleted by User:Koavf this August. I think it should be deleted again. Hacks are still bad; the main namespace on Wikidata should only contain items and nothing else, and having a wikitext page there is quite confusing and certain to break expectations by various tools, data users, and possibly Wikibase itself. If there are “some incoming links locally and on other wikis” to this incorrect title, these should be fixed instead (example). Lucas Werkmeister (talk) 18:19, 15 December 2023 (UTC)

Can you give an example of something that is negatively impacted? —Justin (koavf)TCM 18:41, 15 December 2023 (UTC)
I agree that it should be deleted. We've never had that page, so if you're linking to it, your links are wrong and should be fixed. Looking into this, it was originally created at Justin's request (Wikidata:Administrators' noticeboard/Archive/2013/10#Please_recreate_Main_Page_and_have_it_redirect_to_Wikidata:Main_Page) and deleted because Lydia explicitly asked us not to do that (Wikidata:Contact the development_team/Archive/2013/10#Making_main_page_redirects_happen). Justin requested it again in phab:T58258, which was declined because these links are apparently not as common as Justin seems to think. Given that history, I don't think it was appropriate for Justin to unilaterally decide to undelete it. - Nikki (talk) 19:42, 15 December 2023 (UTC)
Deleted, at least for the short term (and to be clear, I won't recreate it without explicit confirmation that it's okay). @Lydia Pintscher (WMDE): can you advise if this page did in fact cause problems or if it would have caused problems had it remained? —Justin (koavf)TCM 19:45, 15 December 2023 (UTC)
As Lucas said there are assumptions that the main namespace only contains Items in quite a few places so I'd also prefer if it stays deleted and links were fixed. I also fear it opens the door to other pages being created. Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 19:56, 15 December 2023 (UTC)
Yes please delete this redirect. Generally speaking, these kind of oddities are nightmare stuff when writing code that interacts with Wikidata. You do not expect such content because it is so rare and not documented anywhere, but at some point your code breaks and you need to add all sorts of extra checks into the code to make sure it does not crash again. It is much easier if you can assume that all pages in main namespace are actually entities. —MisterSynergy (talk) 20:01, 15 December 2023 (UTC)
As a small piece of irony, this deletion caused the ingester for User:Bovlb/wd-deleted to break yesterday. I had made the assumption that all items deleted from mainspace would be entities.  :) Bovlb (talk) 16:16, 16 December 2023 (UTC)

Deletions in 2023

A little early, but here's a review of deleted items so far this year. In 2023, there were 205876 deletions, 580 per day, 24 per hour. Of these, 23% had no instance of (P31) claim.

Thank you, that’s quite interesting! --Emu (talk) 20:26, 21 December 2023 (UTC)

My (prototype) tool only looks at mainspace because that seemed to be where we had the problem of item recreation. Bovlb (talk) 15:43, 23 December 2023 (UTC)
I've been searching all the usernames for recreations of these and I've found quite a few and nominated them for deletion. A trend I'm noticing is that about half aren't just recreations, they're also hijackings of existing items -- usually those of researchers. -- William Graham (talk) 22:55, 25 December 2023 (UTC)
I noticed this trend as well, rather difficult to trace. Thank you for the reverts and nominations! --Lymantria (talk) 13:20, 27 December 2023 (UTC)
It's on my long-term task list to extend the current wd-deleted tool with a trained model that predicts whether a given item is a recreation. This will make it easier to scan new items and may reduce the need for abuse filters. If I can do this for new items, it would also be possible to extend it to detect existing items that are repurposed to previously-deleted items. Bovlb (talk) 19:48, 29 December 2023 (UTC)

The "Grinch" thing was only meant as a joke, because he really doesn't want to see the surname "Tannemann" in the news at Christmas time and accuses me of being serotonin-driven [here]. --Quick-O-Mat (talk) 14:31, 27 December 2023 (UTC)

Large amount of potentially problematic edits

মোহাম্মদ জনি হোসেন (talk • contribs • deleted contribs • logs • filter log • block user • block log • SUL (for IP: GUC))

@Albertvillanovadelmoral @Lopezsuarez You both need to stop edit warring across multiple items and allow a discussion to take place. Pick a venue, lay out the case, and invite third party input. I suggest WD:Project chat.
@Albertvillanovadelmoral I note that you are making these edits with AVMbot and they do not appear to fall within any of the approved tasks for this bot. Please explain here why we shouldn't block the bot for unpermitted operation. Bovlb (talk) 01:19, 28 December 2023 (UTC)
I have not threatened that user nor have I participated in an editing war. He created the item "municipality of the Valencian Community" without any consensus, without any use. "Municipality of Spain" already exists. Today I returned the previous version of this controversy. If he wants to eliminate the terms "Spain" this is not the place. Lopezsuarez (talk) 01:43, 28 December 2023 (UTC)

@Boblv, please note this is the chronology of events:

  1. As I explained in the Requests for deletion page (https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Wikidata:Requests_for_deletions&diff=prev&oldid=2038669387) the creation of the item municipality of the Valencian Community (Q123754112) and its addition in all the corresponding municipalities was a preliminary work: I am working on adding all the current mayors of the municipalities in the Valencian region from the official portal Argos: https://argos.gva.es/va/ (they have not been updated since 2 terms ago). The next steps will be the request for approval and the run of a test on a subsample.
    • I apologize if this is not the right procedure and I take note that I should ask for bot approval even for preliminary works.
  1. User Lopezsuarez made an edition of municipality of the Valencian Community (Q123754112) to make it irrelevant (https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q123754112&diff=2036977695&oldid=2030512302) and then requested its deletion
    • This violates the "Do not blank items in anticipation of deletion"
  1. I reported this fact, which I find at least dishonest: https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Wikidata:Requests_for_deletions&diff=prev&oldid=2037320416
  2. The user Lopezsuarez threatened me ("This is not going to end like this."): https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Albertvillanovadelmoral&diff=prev&oldid=2038413179
  3. The user Lopezsuarez made a personal attack on me ("He only wants to eliminate the word "Spain" for political reasons."): https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Wikidata:Requests_for_deletions&diff=prev&oldid=2038424534
  4. The user Lopezsuarez started an edit warring reverting all my preliminary work: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Lopezsuarez
  5. I did not participate in the edit warring and instead I immediately reported it
  6. The user Lopezsuarez made a second personal attack on me ("If he wants to eliminate the terms "Spain" this is not the place"): https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Wikidata:Administrators%27_noticeboard&diff=prev&oldid=2038775140

I sincerely insist I would formally report that I have been threatened and personally attacked by the user Lopezsuarez, so I would appreciate if you could inform me about the correct procedure. I think the Wikimedia projects should not tolerate harassment and intimidating behaviors, and these kind of behaviors must be immediately reported. I also think the Wikimedia Foundation has already made some efforts in this direction through the establishment of the Universal Code of Conduct (UCoC) policy.

Note that this user has a long history of vandalism and bullying behavior:

 – The preceding unsigned comment was added by Albertvillanovadelmoral (talk • contribs).

Comment For some reason the user Albert Villanova del Moral does not sign his messages. First of all, I don't understand why he talks about past issues from years ago to justify his totally incorrect actions. I have not threatened or harassed him, but I have informed him that his actions were not going to continue. I have not participated in any user wars, I have simply rolled back to the correct previous version.

User Albert Villanova deliberately omits the word "Spain". He mainly contributes to the Catalan Wikipedia, famous for omitting everything from Spain and saying that Catalonia is "a country" and "a nation." This user uses the term "País Valencià" [Valencian Country], an expression only used by nationalists. He is bothered by everything related to Spain, but I consider that his (respectable) political ideology has no place in Wikidata. Lopezsuarez (talk) 13:16, 28 December 2023 (UTC)

Again, I strongly recommend that you two focus on resolving the underlying content dispute here: Start a discussion, state your case, and let others help you to resolve it. Remember that Wikipedians should treat each other with respect and civility. If you continue to make it about conduct, then I'm not sure this will end well for either of you. Bovlb (talk) 17:47, 28 December 2023 (UTC)

Comment I would like to leave a written record that I have been personally attacked again (third time) in the comment above:

User Albert Villanova deliberately omits the word "Spain". He mainly contributes to the Catalan Wikipedia, famous for omitting everything from Spain and saying that Catalonia is "a country" and "a nation." This user uses the term "País Valencià" [Valencian Country], an expression only used by nationalists. He is bothered by everything related to Spain, but I consider that his (respectable) political ideology has no place in Wikidata.

And additionally (fourth time), in the Catalan Wikipedia, where I asked information about the right procedure to escalate a report of harassment: https://ca.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tema:Xw6ahz52qb28z2a5

The only thing I have done in Wikidata is to prevent you from spreading your innate nationalism outside of this Catalan Wikipedia. It is necessary to put limits on ideological editions, such as avoiding the word "Spain".
It is clear that what bothers Albert is that the municipalities of the Valencian Community are "municipalities of Spain".

--Albert Villanova del Moral (talk) 18:54, 28 December 2023 (UTC)

OK. It looks like the content issue has been resolved by discussion at WD:RFD.
@Lopezsuarez You are warned to stick to discussing the content and not the editor. You should also not be anticipating deletion.
@Albertvillanovadelmoral This could have been resolved much more easily without all these walls of text. There is little point in dragging in issues from the Catalan Wikipedia. You are warned not to abuse your bot flag. And please remember to sign your messages.
Both of you could be a lot more focussed on improving the project and less on importing your political squabbles. Treat your fellow editors with respect and civility.
Are we done here? Bovlb (talk) 22:50, 28 December 2023 (UTC)
For my part, yes. Thank you. Lopezsuarez (talk) 03:08, 29 December 2023 (UTC)

It is with this commitment in mind that I brought the harassment incident to the attention of the appropriate channels, seeking protection and a resolution in line with the principles of zero tolerance for any form of harassment.

As an advocate for positive workplace culture, I cannot accept a resolution that asks me to look away and act as if nothing happened. This not only compromises my well-being but also sends an unsettling message to potential victims and aggressors within the organization. I strongly believe in the importance of taking a principled stand against harassment and ensuring that those responsible are held accountable for their actions.

It is disconcerting to note that the aggressor has not shown any evidence of regret for their actions nor extended an apology for the personal attacks. This lack of remorse is a crucial factor to consider in evaluating the appropriateness of the proposed resolution.

It is disheartening to perceive that impunity might be the outcome of such harassment, as this contradicts the values and standards that any organization should uphold. This not only undermines the severity of the harassment I have experienced but also sends a troubling message that such behavior is tolerated and can go unpunished.

I kindly request a reconsideration of the resolution and a thorough review of the harassment incident. I would like to emphasize that clear policies on blocking and addressing harassment incidents exist. These policies are designed to ensure a swift and effective resolution that upholds the principles of zero tolerance for any form of harassment.

Thank you for your attention to this matter, and I trust that we can work together to ensure a workplace that values the safety and well-being of all its members. --Albert Villanova del Moral (talk) 19:47, 29 December 2023 (UTC)

Albert, absolutely no one has harassed you. Neither me nor anyone, but if I have said something that may have offended you, I apologize. You created an unnecessary item and it has been reverted to the previous version. Lopezsuarez (talk) 19:57, 30 December 2023 (UTC)
@Lopezsuarez: I'd really like to be able to close this with no sanctions. Can you please respond to Amadalvarez's question above? Bovlb (talk) 20:14, 30 December 2023 (UTC)
The user didn't have consent to create that item, I still think it's totally useless. These municipalities have always appeared as "municipalities of Spain" and there is no objective reason why they cease to be so. If they want to include that element they should discuss it. For me this matter has no further answer. Lopezsuarez (talk) 02:15, 31 December 2023 (UTC)

Someone had translated those names that exist in Spanish into Valencian. Is that really a reason to ask for help? This is a collaborative protection, if you don't like it you can modify it yourself. They are names that exist. That starts to be a personal attack on your part. I ask you to be more serious, please. Lopezsuarez (talk) 20:00, 30 December 2023 (UTC)

Backlog of unblock requests

Since one of them just went over the one week mark, perhaps it's time for wider input into our open unblock requests.

  • User talk:Root4222: Blocked by @Jasper Deng for "abusing multiple accounts", specifically as a sock of @Jayden Gottwald (also blocked, same reason) using CheckUser which "which confirms beyond any doubt that [they] are the same person". This is fallout from Wikidata:Requests_for_checkuser/Case/MrProperLawAndOrder, requested by @Emu based on "Another instance of weird discussion activity in connection with suspicious IP range" (a reference to Wikidata:Administrators'_noticeboard/Archive/2023/12#Escape_Velocity_/_Cosmic_Velocity_German). The checkuser investigation was inconclusive regarding the original subject, but linked the two accounts. I note that Jayden Gottwald has no edits on this project, and only two at DEWP (a self-revert). Root4222's only contributions outside of the unblock request have been the AN thread and the creation of a user page on Meta. So two new users with no strong behavioural evidence of anything, just the checkuser evidence linking them together. (There's an argument that Root4222's edits are not typical for a new user, suggesting a prior history.) There's also a bizarre intervention from Mdrustamansari, which might mean something, or could just be unrelated incompetence.
  • User talk:2600:387:15:1B16:0:0:0:6: Appealing a /40 block by @Multichill that apparently affects a substantial fraction of US AT&T subscribers. This block was based on a substantial history of vandalism, including item blanking and abusive content on user talk pages. In my review, I did find a number of likely-good-faith edits, but I had to go back to July to find any changes that were actual improvements.

@Bovlb: A few days ago I reduced the block to a /43, an eighth of the size, to reduce collateral damage while still blocking the LTA on that range. I have declined the unblock request for that range; a lot of it is likely w:en:User:Andrew5 (whose history here started with User:Gale5050 and Special:Contribs/2600:387:5:800::/56) who has a history of wasting time/trying to split hairs with every IP block they get. Note that while I directly blocked the /43, I consider it a modification of Multichill's block and not a new block, and hence don't consider myself involved for the purposes of reviewing; that said, anyone else is free to re-review it as long as they consult me.--Jasper Deng (talk) 23:43, 24 December 2023 (UTC)
There's an unblock request at User talk:Mwintirew that was opened last year, but didn't show up until the other day because of a formatting error. This relates to Wikidata:Requests for checkuser/Case/Oliver Nortsu. As I read it, this user was blocked because checkuser evidence showed they were "Likely the same" as an LTA, but with no investigation into behavioural similarity. The user has a substantial history here and on ENWP, with a hitherto clean record. In my opinion, there is no basis to claim a behavioural match to the LTA. I don't know the details of the checkuer evidence, but the user claims to be an organizer of training events and editathons, which is a plausible explanation for technical similarity. @Jasper Deng, blocking admin and checkuser, has not yet responded. Disruptive edits & POV-pushing

Hi all, there is an ongoing discussion here that requires your attention and ruling, regarding edits being reverted for ideological stances. Reda benkhadra (talk) 01:50, 6 December 2023 (UTC)

Your personal attack deserves an adequate response: you are the single purpose account who is using the project to push a political POV (your edit history here and on other projects speaks for itself). M.Bitton (talk) 04:04, 6 December 2023 (UTC)
To summarize the discussion:
  1. @M.Bitton removed legitimate sourced or sourceable claims (namely Morocco (Q1028) in country (P17) and urban commune of Morocco (Q3327862) in instance of (P31), the later also having had stated in (P248) as 2014 Moroccan census (Q19599909), which can be applied to country (P17) as well as other claims). His original changes can be found here, here, and here. He also repeatedly reverted later edits by @Reda benkhadra and myself to restore the state of the item (here, here and here). He refused to cooperate or consider suggested solutions which are in line with Wikidata guidelines, quoted multiple times in the discussion, namely to add statement supported by (P3680) and statement disputed by (P1310) (in addition to sourcing circumstances (P1480)) to the potentially contentious claims. His responses in the discussion invoke ideological claims and personal provocations, rather than data modelling issues, which is what the discussion is supposed to be about.
  2. The intervention by @Koavf while it moved the discussion somewhat forward, in the end amounted to basically stalling and wasting time, bringing up unrelated or general topics. I'd be happy to discuss proposals and policies about disputed territories and reliable sources, at any point, but that has nothing to do with resolving the specific issue at hand. @Koavf has also edited the same item just before @M.Bitton, removing mentions of "Morocco" and/or adding "Western Sahara" to the descriptions in English and German. I must thank him though for the thought-provoking discussion overall, and pointing me to aformentioned proposal pages, which will certainly be very useful in the future.
  3. Examples of ideological claims made by @M.Bitton from the discussion:
    • ... nor do I need to prove that some of it is illegally occupied by Morocco. The bottom line: Western Sahara is not and has never been part of Morocco
    • The trouble is that all the reliable sources (the government of a occupying power doesn't count as one) describe WS as how everyone knows it.
    • Every part of it, be it a city or a village, cannot be part of Morocco.
    • Dakhla being part of Morocco is pure nonsense
    • Regardless of how you look at it, there is no way that it will be defined as being part of Morocco.
    • It's not administered by Morocco, it's partly illegally occupied by it (the difference speaks for itself).
    • the city, just like parts of Western Sahara, is illegally occupied by Morocco (again, per the reliable sources that are about the subject)
    • Also, there is no way that it can be described as being part of Morocco (as you claim) because that would mean that SADR is claiming parts of Morocco, which obviously is pure nonsense.
  4. And also this personal attack from @M.Bitton: Your wall of text does not address any of the raised concerns about your double standard and the fact that you are making up new rules as you go along.
  5. Next are several sources, with highlighed quotes, which I've provided in the discussion showing that Morocco and its related items should definitely be added to Dakhla (Q345204) (as well as any other opposing claims if they are backed up by sources):
    • source 1

Dakhla is a town in Western Sahara under Moroccan control. It is the capital of the Moroccan administrative region of Dakhla Oued AlDahab.

    • source 2

Twenty-eight other countries – mostly African and Arab – have opened consulates in the Western Saharan cities of Dakhla or Laayoune in what Morocco sees as tangible support for its rule of the territory.

    • source 3

As you leave Dakhkla airport, don’t be taken in by the long, straight avenues typical of Moroccan urbanism from the 2000s. Because while the city emerges out of the dune ridge, it is the lagoon that makes Dakhla a grandiose site. A vast expanse of salt water located in the extreme south of Morocco

    • source 4

In July 2004 Moroccan authorities began demolishing parts of the Fort of Villa Cisneros (fort de Dakhla) ... In the meantime ICOMOS Morocco has informed us that the Moroccan Ministry of Culture has a great interest in this building and is planning to initiate the process of listing the fort as a historic monument.

    • source 5

In Dakhla, an Atlantic seaport town punctuated with military buildings in Morocco-administered Western Sahara, swarms of kitesurfers now sail in the lagoon daily

  6. This additional source shows that "Western Sahara" can be used as a purely geographical term (alongside Eastern Sahara in Algeria), and therefore the statement "Western Sahara, Morocco" is perfectly acceptable, contrary to what @M.Bitton claimed:

The second critical moment in the evolution of Moroccan–Algerian relations, from Morocco’s perspective, was the summit between King Hassan II and President Boumediene in 1969 in Ifrane, which led to the borders agreement of 1972 in which Morocco recognized the Eastern Sahara as part of Algeria while Algeria supported Morocco’s claim to the Western Sahara (Hegoy 1970). Boumediene’s relatively sudden change of heart regarding the Saharan issue and support for the pro-independence POLISARIO were perceived by Morocco as the second time that Algeria had turned its back on a major bilateral commitment.

  7. Other sources which I didn't quote: BBC, Lefigaro, the 2014 Moroccan census results
  8. I will reiterate my recommendation (with some additional specifications) concerning the dispute itself, which @Koavf agreed was a sensible one:
--19:45, 7 December 2023 (UTC) Ideophagous (talk) 19:45, 7 December 2023 (UTC)
That's not a summary, all that shows is your POV. I don't need to cite all the contradictory BS that you kept throwing or the fact that you started making new rules to suit your political agenda (it's all there for everyone to see).
ideological claims that's exactly what your claims are. Furthermore, you failed to answer any of the questions that I and the other editor kept asking you. The reason: you couldn't because answering them would show the contradiction and highlight your political agenda.
this personal attack nope, that's a response to your Your claims are making about a political ideology (again, everyone can see who started personalizing the discussion, i.e. YOU).
amounted to basically stalling and wasting time all you had to do was answer the questions, but the again, you couldn't because that meant explaining your contradictions and the rules that you invented.
"Western Sahara" can be used as a purely geographical term tell that to the UN, the African Union, the ICJ, the European court of justice and every scholar out there. If this nonsense is not meant to push a political POV, I don't know what is.
There is nothing in what I said that isn't attributable to many scholarly sources that I can literally flood any discussion with (they are undisputed facts that clearly bother you, otherwise you you wouldn't describe them as a "political ideology" while claiming to only care about can be sourced). I stand by all of it and if the community decides that any so-called "sourced" BS can be added to whatever, then I'll know exactly what to do. M.Bitton (talk) 19:47, 7 December 2023 (UTC)
Given the behavior of @M.Bitton, as he's systematically removing mentions of Morocco from items that are by definition administrative regions of Morocco (i.e. they only exist and have meaning within the Moroccan administrative system), such as:
And other POV-motivated changes. I would hope that the administrators will deal with this situation appropriately. Ideophagous (talk) 23:35, 7 December 2023 (UTC)
You are systematically reverting all my edits. As for the POV, how on earth can you describe Laayoune as a city in Morocco when everyone knows that it's the capital of Western Sahara? M.Bitton (talk) 23:38, 7 December 2023 (UTC)

As someone who has edited this item before, I wanted to be conservative about trying to impose any kind of solution, etc. My perspective is that this is a larger systemic issue that needs to be resolved policywise rather than re-litigated across hundreds of items repeatedly. Until or unless that happens, I fear that there is going to be a lot of back-and-forth, including personal interpretation of ambiguous or non-existent policy. —Justin (koavf)TCM 00:06, 8 December 2023 (UTC)

Agreed - and honestly I think the status quo should be a bit different than it currently appears. For locations that are de-facto administered by a different country than is most widely recognized within the international community, I think it harms our database to not list things like which administrative sub-unit the location is actually governed by. Maybe we need some more specific properties to capture nuaunce and prevent the data from appearing biased. -- Ajraddatz (talk) 03:10, 8 December 2023 (UTC)
Hello @Ajraddatz. I'm not sure what you mean by the "status quo", but if you mean the current state of the aforementioned items, it is simply the result of user @M.Bitton removing almost any mention of Morocco (Q1028) and related entities from those items systematically, and with complete impunity. I have refrained from reverting his edits further, so as to avoid edit-warring and to seek the community consensus, but such concerns do not seem to interest @M.Bitton. Before we can seriously talk about a new policy, I think the items should first return to their original state, with the addition of sourcing circumstances (as I have already suggested in my recommendation above). The current guidelines, which I have quoted ad nauseam, clearly state that multiple view points can and should be represented in the item (in this case, the items should be linked to both Morocco and SADR) especially with the presence of supporting sources. Furthermore, SADR is by far not the "most widely recognized within the international community", and both claims to the territory put together do not have the majority support of the international community (each has the support of less than 50 member states of the UN).
I would also draw your attention to further absurdities in this whole affair:
  1. The two regions Dakhla-Oued Ed-Dahab (Q21235104) and Laâyoune-Sakia El Hamra (Q19951088), which together form Western Sahara (Q6250) (or Southern Provinces (Q1418613) in Moroccan terminology) only exist because they were created by the Moroccan administrative system. Had another authority controlled the region, it may have divided Western Sahara (Q6250) to 4 or 5 regions with different borders entirely, and gave them different names. It makes exactly zero sense to have instance of (P31) = region of Western Sahara (Q123689937) (an item created by @M.Bitton 2 days ago to serve his ideological purposes which has no real correspondence or meaning) instead of region of Morocco (Q845643) which is an actual administrative term in Morocco, with its 12 region administrative system, and has 27 Wikipedia articles written about it.
  2. In all of these items, statistics are listed from different years, which were collected by the Moroccan statistics institution High Commission for Planning (Q3128426). How is it possible to ackowledge the population statistics from a state authority, but then remove every mention of that authority's terminology for the item in instance of (P31) and also the country it belongs to in country (P17)?
I agree that more specific properties are needed for such complex cases, but it would be absurd to not fix the vandalism on these items until the proposals for such properties are drafted and approved. Ideophagous (talk) 19:18, 8 December 2023 (UTC)
Let's be clear about one ting: the only serial POV pusher around here is you (a single purpose account that does nothing else but push a Moroccan political POV).
Morocco claims all kind of areas and even gives names to areas (the mentioned regions) that include those that are under the control of a founding member of the African Union (a ridiculous claim that only a POV pushing nationalist would try to ignore). If creating a name for a country is all it takes to make it yours, then the world map would look like a joke. In any case, the fact that those regions are in Western Sahara can easily be sourced.
If an area is in Western Sahara (a fact that is supported by reliable sources), then it makes no sense to claim that it is part of Morocco as doing so is a) factually incorrect and b) it would also mean that SADR is claiming part of Morocco (which obviously is pure nonsense).
12 region administrative there is a big difference between what Morocco claims and the facts that are based on reliable sources. What you've been doing all this time is giving UNDUE weight to what Morocco claims, while ignoring every RS out there and even trying to make a new rules that suit your agenda (you did claim that the entries should be based on official sources and when asked why, you refused to answer).
How is it possible to ackowledge the population statistics from a state authority mentioning it is not acknowledging it, because the only authority whose job is to count the indigenous population of Western Sahara for the purpose of the referendum is the UN (easily sourced).
It's not just about the instances, it's mainly about the description (you know that all too well).
Talking of vandalism, yesterday you removed the fact that Laayoune is the capital of Western Sahara. Care to explain why? M.Bitton (talk) 19:48, 8 December 2023 (UTC)
Just a general note: calling someone a POV pusher, when it appears that both sides are trying to contribute in good faith (though in a slightly heated environment), is not conducive to meaningful discussion. Please refrain in future communications. Stick to the points, if you are making good ones then you will convince others without the need for name calling. -- Ajraddatz (talk) 21:01, 8 December 2023 (UTC)
No only did they start casting aspersions (I did mention this right at the start and can provide the diff if necessary), but they are still are doing it (and nobody asked them to refrain from doing so). M.Bitton (talk) 21:23, 8 December 2023 (UTC)

@Ajraddatz: M.Bitton continues to revert edits unopposed, and without justification. The item Laayoune (Q47837) for example has biased descriptions in several languages, but correcting one of them as I did here, only results in reverts. Also tagging @Houssam Atlas: since he's involved in that item.--Ideophagous (talk) 21:19, 11 December 2023 (UTC)

correcting one of them that's not a correction, that's a removal without even an explanation (the justification for the revert was given in the edit summary). I have no particular opinion about that one, but if you suspect that it's biased, then, given the circumstances and the fact that you ignored the above question, the correct course of action would be to justify its removal. I will note that you have ignored all the questions (even single one of them) that you've been asked.
The other editor that you tagged has been changing the entries for a while (without explanation and without participating in the discussions). Let's see what they have to say for themselves. M.Bitton (talk) 21:31, 11 December 2023 (UTC)
@M.Bitton I have answered all the questions from serious editors such as the gentlemen above. Questions from vandalizers do not count and are a pure waste of my time. A description like "عاصمة جمهورية الصحراء الغربية المحتلة" (capital of the occupied republic of Western Sahara) is definitely a very biased description. Until the status of that region is settled by the international community, the only NPOV way to model those items is to reflect all sourced territorial claims to the region in the Wikidata claims of those items. Even if the matter is settled, the losing territorial claim should remain in the item with the addition of an end date, and should be deprecated. Ideophagous (talk) 22:48, 11 December 2023 (UTC)
Nope, you haven't answered a single question (whether from me or from Koavf). The discussion is still there.
Questions from vandalizers do not count if that's not another clear-cut personal attack, I don't know what is. M.Bitton (talk) 22:56, 11 December 2023 (UTC)
Yes, that is. Ideophagous, please also refrain from that commentary. It would probably be a good thing if both of you stepped back and let other people decide on this. -- Ajraddatz (talk) 03:42, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
@Ajraddatz Sure. have a nice day! Ideophagous (talk) 07:09, 12 December 2023 (UTC)

After consulting with @Nikki:, I'm adding back this discussion, which was automatically archived due to inaction, since it has not been resolved yet.--Ideophagous (talk) 11:52, 23 December 2023 (UTC)

Note that this spilled over to Commons (pl) and M.Bitton got blocked for two weeks.

Too long without admin action. This topic even got archived. Let's do it like this: We'll start on Dakhla (Q345204). Ideophagous please add the statements you consider missing preferably with sources. M.Bitton don't remove these statements, you can add the relevant statement disputed by (P1310) and statement supported by (P3680). Let's see if a middle ground is possible here.

I hope other admins also can keep an eye on this. Multichill (talk) 11:44, 24 December 2023 (UTC)

Hello @Multichill. Thank you for moving this discussion forward. Per your suggestions, I've made the following changes to the item Dakhla (Q345204):
I can't think of anything else at the moment, except cleaning up the item a bit more (I don't think I'm the only one who disagrees with the usage of imported from Wikimedia project (P143) as reference. M.Bitton, and anyone else, are welcome to add sourcing circumstances as long as it's in line with the guidelines and community concensus. Ideophagous (talk) 12:55, 24 December 2023 (UTC)
The deprecated rank is not correct, see Help:Ranking#Deprecated_rank (that's always confusing people). I modified the ranks.
imported from Wikimedia project (P143) is not a reference, but just a way to track where automated tools got the data from. Should never be added by a human. See also Help:Sources#Different_types_of_sources. Multichill (talk) 13:07, 24 December 2023 (UTC)
@Multichill: thanks for stepping in. That block on Commons makes no sense (a series of personal attacks by them, just like the above, are ignored, but a response from me is judged unacceptable). There are also the other issues, such as: 1) they keep claiming that we should use official sources while refusing to explain why or even respecting their own claim. 2) they keep changing this (repeated again today) while claiming that Western Sahara is not a country (a claim that is contradicted by reliable sources). 3) worst of all, they describe the easily sourced facts that I want to add as "idealogical opinions". M.Bitton (talk) 13:08, 24 December 2023 (UTC)
  1. "Official sources" as I previously used the term are a subtype of "Authoritative sources" as listed in the guidelines, which are issued by political or legislative entities.
  2. The item Western Sahara (Q6250) is not an instance of (P31) or subclass of (P279) country (Q6256), If you believe this to be incorrect, you'll have to provide proof that it's a political territorial entity (Q1048835), which I don't think it currently is. I'm open to being corrected though.
  3. That's a moot point. If you have reliable sources backing your claims, please cite them here and/or add them to the items in question.
Ideophagous (talk) 13:39, 24 December 2023 (UTC)
  1. There is no mention of "official sources" in that guideline. Besides, "official" is anything but trustworthy (when it comes to the reliability of the sources). Again, you have failed to explain why you keep insisting that we only use official sources.
  2. It is a country and the sources that support that are easily found (but don't worry, we'll get to that once we sorted out what can and cannot be added).
  3. You describing what I want to add (illegally occupied by Morocco) as an "idealogical opinion" (your exact words) is anything but a moot point. Why did you say it and why did you refuse to explain why such facts shouldn't be added? M.Bitton (talk) 13:51, 24 December 2023 (UTC)
    1. I used "official" with the meaning "authoritative" as applied to political institutions, as used in the guidelines, since I wasn't quoting them word for word, and the discussion was too heated to elaborate any further at the time. Anyway, the page I linked in my previous comment explains what "Authoritative sources" are, and lists "policy and legislation (including government and international organization reports)" as a type of such sources.
    2. My understanding is that the usage you're referring to is a loose reference to Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (Q40362), but should not be understood strictly as a separate political entity. Otherwise, we'll have three political entities here disputing the territory: Morocco (Q1028), Western Sahara (Q6250), and Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (Q40362). I think it's rather that Western Sahara (Q6250) is a disputed territory (Q15239622) disputed by Morocco (Q1028) and Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (Q40362). More experienced editors are certainly needed here to weigh in on this issue, and you're welcome to provide references supporting what you wrote in your comment.
    Ideophagous (talk) 14:09, 24 December 2023 (UTC)
    1. Authoritative is not synonymous with official and the guideline in question is clear on that, therefore, there is no reason for you to insist on only using "official sources".
    2. Nope, the fact that Western Sahara is a country is easily sourced (that's all that matters). In other words, your claim is baseless.
    3. I repeat the point that you ignored once again: you describing what I want to add (illegally occupied by Morocco) as an idealogical opinion (your exact words) is anything but a moot point. Why did you say it and why did you refuse to explain why such facts shouldn't be added?
    M.Bitton (talk) 14:16, 24 December 2023 (UTC)
@Multichill OK thank you. I had misunderstood the usage of rank deprecation and imported from Wikimedia project (P143), but now it's clear. Ideophagous (talk) 13:12, 24 December 2023 (UTC)

Hello @Multichill and @Ajraddatz What's the logical next step now? I've made a quick check of Dakhla (Q345204) and apart from a minor cleanup, the item seems overall OK to me. Concerning statement disputed by (P1310) and statement supported by (P3680), what should we add as value? The whole list of countries that oppose/support each claim? Do we need to repeat this for every geographical element in Western Sahara (Q6250)? An alternative would be to move on to other aforementioned items that have been subject of dispute, such as Laayoune (Q47837), Dakhla-Oued Ed-Dahab (Q21235104) and Laâyoune-Sakia El Hamra (Q19951088)--Ideophagous (talk) 10:17, 30 December 2023 (UTC)

The next step is for you to answer the questions that you keep ignoring (the root of the issue). M.Bitton (talk) 12:33, 30 December 2023 (UTC)
I think the next step is to start a discussion on how these cases should be dealt with generally. Personally, I think these items should reflect both the international consensus and the reality on the ground: if a country claims some area and is the de facto administrator of that region, it seems strange as a neutral data source for us to intentionally not include that information. I'm a bit busy over the holidays, but I might start such a discussion in early January. In the meantime - this is actually not time sensitive, and I really recommend that both you and M.Bitton find other things to worry about. -- Ajraddatz (talk) 22:13, 30 December 2023 (UTC)
Hello @Ajraddatz. I just want to make sure the discussion doesn't get archived automatically, which already happened once due to inaction, which is why I wrote a reminder. I totally agree that creating a policy to deal with such contentious items is very important. But before we try to create a policy, I think we have to deal with the items based on current guidelines. In addition to the above items, I think region of Western Sahara (Q123689937) which M.Bitton invented out of thin air, and has no basis in reality (not an administrative concept used by any organization or government institution as far as I know), should be deleted. Take care, and I wish you great holidays! Ideophagous (talk) 08:36, 31 December 2023 (UTC)
I too agree that a clear policy about how to deal with this and other similar topics is extremely important as it will prevent editors from inventing policies (eg. only using official sources) and describing a fact (eg. illegally occupied by Morocco) as an idealogical opinion. M.Bitton (talk) 11:58, 31 December 2023 (UTC)

Adding a reminder so this discussion doesn't get automatically archived.--Ideophagous (talk) 18:45, 6 January 2024 (UTC)

  • Ok, I think this discussion has run its course. Resolved per my last comment on the talk page. If any uninvolved editors have further to add or feel a point has been missed, please feel free to re-open. I do not want to hear further from M.Bitton or Ideophagous on this issue, and a general warning that sanctions up to and including a block may follow for further unproductive editing. As I've mentioned before, probably best for those with a strong interest in the matter to stay far away from these pages. -- Ajraddatz (talk) 04:16, 13 January 2024 (UTC)

Is there any way to improve anti-vandalism tools on Wikidata?

Is there any way to improve anti-vandalism tools and to create some of them on Wikidata, and to improve time by time, such as Twinkle, Huggle, RedWarn, and Wikipedia:UltraViolet? Those tools are used to fight vandalism. And should we make 3-revert and 1-revert rules? User:Solaris5296 (talk | contribs | warning advice) 16:04, 30 December 2023 (UTC)

@MisterSynergy: you might be in the best position to answer this. Ymblanter (talk) 20:14, 30 December 2023 (UTC)
Thank you, well yes there is something I can contribute here. Basically two things are very different at Wikidata compared to Wikipedias that makes these existing antivandalism tools hardly useful for this project:
  • "Atomic edits" at Wikidata. When editing via the web UI (as most anon users and newcomers do), edits are "atomic" in the sense that they usually represent the smallest possible change, and thus often an entire change set of revisions on a given item page are made by an anonymous user or newcomer that require patrol. In many cases, it is practically impossible (and in fact useless) to patrol individual revisions out of a series of edits on an item page without looking at the context of the other changes. The entire change set needs to be reviewed in total, and (usually) either accepted or rejected entirely. It thus needs to be presented as a single patrollable unit to the patroller. As much as I am aware, the existing tools do not allow such a review process, as the patrol functionality is inherently single-revision-based (and not page-based or user-based).
  • Necessity of filters. With Wikidata being a multilingual project, plenty of revisions require language skills in order to patrol them. A useful antivandalism tool provides filters that allow the patroller to limit the event stream to those changes that they are actually able to understand and clear from the backlog. Some of the Wikidata-specific patrol tool provide such filters, but the classical tools do not.
So far from me. I don't think that anyone works on these issues, but I'd be happy to hear if I was wrong here. Happy to answer questions. ---MisterSynergy (talk) 23:46, 30 December 2023 (UTC)
There is Wikidata:Quonter Vandal by BrokenSegue, it does help with vandal edit detection. –FlyingAce✈hello 05:48, 31 December 2023 (UTC)
yes so I have unfortunately been very busy with work and haven't had time to work on Quonter Vandal. I still believe there is a lot more room to get a lot more sophisticated here but sadly I'm not sure when I'll have the time. I designed it very explicitly to deal with the "atomic edits" problem (I group sets of consecutive diffs together and analyse them together). Unfortunately a lot of tooling (even ones being made today) only looks at the per-diff stream and so misses a lot of signal. Honestly for multilingual issues I just use google translate in my browser when patrolling. Yes it is not optimal but lots of obvious vandalism can still be caught even through an automated translation system. I wish wikidata had a built-in translation system to help with this. I'm not sure what other filters you want? BrokenSegue (talk) 07:08, 31 December 2023 (UTC)
Even if the vandalism detection still has to be made by humans, Twinkle (which I use on en.wikipedia) has functions that makes it very easy to welcome, warn and report users. It seems to me that would be as useful on Wikidata as there. Sjö (talk) 08:57, 31 December 2023 (UTC)
I know those tools especially when the actions warn the user and revert the vandalism. We should gain access to Huggle, Twinkle, RedWarn, and UltraViolet. And we should also create those pages on the Wikidata namespace. There will be new user warning templates and blocked templates. I will create some of the new user warnings too. Even though I'm not an administrator. Even though this, however, that's why we need them because wikis made out of MediaWiki like this wiki are subject to some vandalism. And just like English Wikipedia, we should also create a 3-revert and 1-revert rule, and sometimes even the 0-revert rule. The new policies will say if the user made enough reverts (generally 4) will be blocked for 24 hours. Thank you for your cooperation. You could now try to improve anti-vandalism tools on Wikidata. Solaris5296 (talk) 00:44, 5 January 2024 (UTC)
I think Navigation Popups can ideally be a great tool for RC patrol with some improvement. It can display the diff when we hover over the diff link (See File:Navpopups diff screenshot.png for an example). Changes are usually small on wikidata and we usually do not need to open the page, so Popups can save a lot of time. But unfortunately Popups currently does not support wikidata content models and we can only see the raw JSON. 94rain talk 08:04, 5 January 2024 (UTC)
@MisterSynergy, BrokenSegue, Solaris5296: Independent of this topic, I started working on something.
First, here are some ideas about patrolling in 2024:
  • You can patrol synchronously (in real time) or asynchronously (by browsing reports).
  • There are many changes by IPs and new users for an individual. Even if I have 500 latest unpatrolled changes loaded, it takes just around two hours for another 500 to show up. A lot of these changes are sitelink additions, Automatic Update from Connected Wiki, or Sitelink Change from Connected Wiki. I usually ignore them (or patrol them if I cannot hide them).
    • Idea: We could have a bot patrol new links if there is "some match" with the item.
  • You can think of three kinds of data that vandalism concerns: terms (language dependent), claims (language independent) and sitelinks.
    1. For sitelinks, we are mostly concerned about link removals. Automatic updates (from page moves) could be malicious, but we cannot do substitute patrolling for all wikis here.
    2. For terms, the problem is the language dependency. There are too many languages out there for an individual to understand.
      • Could AI (LLMs) help us? ("Does this piece of text make sense in that language? Is this piece of text explicit/defamatory in that language?")
      • What about a simple user script that provides machine translation inline? (WMF does have privacy preserving services for that.)
      • Tools like reCh are excellent for asynchronous patrolling. We should reach various language communities around for help.
    3. For claims, we already have a working quality assurance system in place: Property Constraints. More on this below.
      • Wikidata has built its trust by storing facts with references. You can tell by presence of a reference if you trust a statement or not. Still, it's possible to change a sourced claim to a total nonsense, keeping the reference(s) intact.
      • Some debt is sitting around: phab:T190529, phab:T213630, phab:T90881, ...
That said, I tried to create a Python (Pywikibot-based) library that can identify and evaluate a (series of) change(s) and tell if some property constraints were violated (or satisfied). It's supposed to be a library, i.e., it could be used in various anti-vandalism application. No machine learning involved, that can come later.
I'm testing it here: User:MatSuBot/test. The first column is the "score". Higher means more problems were identified. I'm interested in feedback.
--Matěj Suchánek (talk) 19:59, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
I would be interested in a bot that given a series of changes tells you what constraint violations were added/fixed. That would be very useful signal in any bot. My Quonter Vandal bot already is quite good at multi-language scenarios where people inject insults or other such things. I think LLMs in general would cover that though an extension that did translation in the UI would be good.
My general opinion on the situation is still that we ought to be able to fully automate a substantial portion of the anti-vandalism work. BrokenSegue (talk) 20:18, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
What works well for the Wikipedias might not work so well for Wikidata. Wikidata gets a lot of edits, so it's hard to follow recent changes.

Vojtěch Dostál (talk) 14:51, 28 December 2023 (UTC)
@Pigsonthewing, Fuzheado, Vojtěch Dostál and others: some sample property talk pages have finally been undeleted: Property talk:P28, Property talk:P387, Property talk:P794, Property talk:P1655, Property talk:P4877, and Property talk:P5326 (I have relatively randomly chosen them via Wikidata:Database reports/Deleted properties). Before we undelete all property talk pages, I would like to hear opinions on the questions raised above (protection status, property documentation template, other related items, maybe more things to consider…). Thanks, MisterSynergy (talk) 22:51, 5 January 2024 (UTC)
Thank you. I have forked {{Property documentation}} as {{Property documentation/after deletion}}, using an old, non-automated version; please undelete Template:Property documentation/row in order that the latter template may work. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 15:24, 6 January 2024 (UTC)
@Pigsonthewing: done. Let me know if there is more to restore (besides the actual property talk pages, once we have figured out what needs to be done exactly). —MisterSynergy (talk) 16:28, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
Thank you. I've used it on Property talk:P4877, but there is an unwanted deletion notice being transcluded from somewhere - and I can't figure out where. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 19:50, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
@Pigsonthewing: there is {{#ifexist: {{SUBJECTPAGENAME}} | |{{d|Talk page of a deleted property}}}} in line 6 of Template:Property documentation/after deletion. It nominates the property talk page for deletion if the property page does not exist. Not exactly sure what needs to be modified here, templates are none of my expertise really. —MisterSynergy (talk) 21:36, 14 January 2024 (UTC)
