Ideal would be if the value is not a simple number, but a length value which can be converted into several different units (e.g. m, ft, km, ...) and then each Wikipedia can choose which value(s) they want to show. en:Template:Infobox station currently offers two parameters, "depth" and "elevation". However, they are mutually exclusive, so possibly there should be only one property, or not? I am also unsure about more specific name for this propetry(-ies); "depth of platform" and "track elevation" would have been good, but en:Template:Infobox station suggests providing "The depth of the primary platform below ground level", while according to Russian standards, "Глубина заложения" is measured as the difference between the track level and the ground level. Should we enforce uniformity of measurement or leave it to local traditions? The difference (height of platform) can supposedly be readily calculated, as there should only be a couple of standards for en:railway platform height within a single system. P.S. Ну если в это поле можно будет запихнуть отрицательные значения, то наверно вполне можно будет обойтись и им. А не возникнет конфликта округления/погрешности? Глубина залегания на ru.wp прописывается с точностью до полуметра, а размер станции под 200 метров - надо будет точно центр высчитывать, а его и не узнать... Поэкспериментировал сейчас — похоже авторы эту дыру закрыли, при попытке установить это поле ботом появляется ошибка. Другая грань проблемы, которую вы упомянули: координаты и глубину залегания мы скорее всего получаем из разных источников и как их указывать, если это будет одно поле — непонятно. К тому же, какой смысл предполагается под altitude - высота над уровнем земли в данной местности или высота над уровнем моря? Of course there will be an internal unit – this will be SI-Units for sure since this is the international technical standard. What's important is, that this won't be important since the system will have a build in unitconversion. When using a statement of an item in Wikipedia you will be able to say witch unit the value should have. And when adding (or viewing) a statement in Wikidata.org you will be able to add it in any unit you like nut have to declare witch unit it is in. It hasn't been implemented jet and I haven't seen any mokups, so I can't tell you how it will work, maybe you'll have to input-fields (one for the value one for the uncertainty) and one dropdown with the units, maybe also one input-field where you can enter something liken "500 Squaremeters" and the system recognizes the unit, or something similar. I also don't know if this kind of flexible view and inputmechanism will be available from the first version on, but even if not, there are a lot of good JavaScript-developers here, witch can quickly build an easy gadget for this. So there is no need for discussions about miles or kilometers, or for creating two properties – Wikidata will use SI-units as internal units and have an unitconversion allowing to use witch unit you like! -- MichaelSchoenitzer (talk) 19:16, 14 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Operas can have a runtime of hours and you can aproximate it to some degree, maybe ±10 min. I did not know that datetype time was could be used for time length, I thought it was only for a certain point in time. I updated the template to reflect this. I also renamed the property to "duration" instead of "runtime", since it is more appropriate considering what it can be used for. "runtime" and "length" should be the alias of this property.

Motivation

Proposing with the aim of splitting website account on (P553) (see Wikidata:Project chat#Website user names)).

There are various notable people in Wikidata who are also Wikimedians (including some who are notable for work they've done as Wikimedians), so people obviously want to link to their username. There are a variety of projects in a variety of editions but now that SUL was finalised, I think it could be stored as a single Wikimedia username.

There might be a better URL which lists all the accounts which could be used as the URL formatter, but this is the only thing I'm aware of right now.

Does anyone know which characters are/aren't allowed in usernames?

I do not know exactly, but I have seen notes that some users who adopted a username 10 years ago, today have characters that cannot be used in new usernames. no, the link between the real identity of the person and its wm identity is not already stored, except for admins or crats. A lot of considered university teachers or so, that publish in reviews, could not like to see their wm-identity displayed this way, especially, since the Global account now gives access to all contributions in all wm projects in a few clicks :/

reliable sources does not mean that it makes those info readily available to anybody, which will be the case if those are added to wikidata in a directly usable and re-usable way (through VIAF among others). Which, in my opinion, poses problems of privacy. I personally know people, who are in VIAF, ISNI, BNF, etc., and who contribute wp, but do not want, under any circumstance, this info possibly disclosed. @Soap: We will create one property Mass and this property can be used for human, animal, car or any other individual element. Then depending on the cases we can think about specific mass properties but this is dependent on the "numeric datatype with unit" features. The best is to withdraw your proposal until this datatype is created because we can't define anything about something which doesn't exist yet.   •   Support on principle, but I think that needs more thought and that it is incomplete as is, and related to the "processes" problem : process usually involves subprocesses, and for example the "biscuit" example seems incomplete as it involves other parts than the oven one. It is pretty close to the "algorithm" problem. It has input and outputs, (materials in the case of building a physical object, datas in the case of an algorithm). Two processes to build the same kind of objects exists that do not involves the same materials. Motivation

The database AcademiaNet was created and is maintained by the Robert Bosch Stiftung (Q319347). It features entries for more than 1500 excellent female scientists and will be augmented continuously. It is already used as a reference in some 250 dewiki articles (see w:de:Vorlage:AcademiaNet). I've asked the editorial board of the database if they are interested in matching our items with their database; if they reply positively, I'll ask them for a list of entries and start matching with the help of Mix'n'Match.

Update: We already have a full list of entries here: w:de:Benutzer:Berita/Academia. This list seems complete as of December 10, 2014. So all that's left to do is making sure that we update it regularly. Maybe the editorial board will help us with that.

    Sorry, that was the first real-life example I found by looking at the frwiki pages that use that template, the value was "Louis-Charles Mahé de la Bourdonnais<br />Portrait post-mortem réalisé par [[Jean Henry Marlet|Marlet]] à partir d'un moulage du visage<ref>''[[Le Palamède]], Revue mensuelle des échecs et autres jeux'', 15 décembre 1841.</ref>.". That brings up the question: is the value of the proposed property limited by Wikidata to no links and no tags? which would mean it can be used only in some of the infoboxes, making it fail the aim that the image and the legend are at one place so that one is never changed without the other.   • This property should only be used as a qualifier to one of the "image" properties so it is attached to that image. I suggest that we encourage editors to add images and mark one of them 'preferred' instead of deleting images - though you can always revert the deletion of an image with it's qualifiers.
