show/edit all labels/descriptions

as Wikidata:Tools#LabelLister, but show them directly on the page, not on popup and allow to edit them without entering the language. Help needed

Can someone help me finish the implementation of User:Waldir/autoFill.js? It's almost done, but I'm stuck at how to make the "save" link active (right now I have to manually change something in the text box to trigger the change). Any other improvement suggestions are welcome, of course. --Waldir (talk) 19:34, 15 November 2012 (UTC)

I would make an api request with ajax. If you want I can help you with that :-) --Bene* (talk) 19:37, 15 November 2012 (UTC)
Yes, I would love to do that but I had to stick to what I knew. Feel free to edit the code directly! I'm willing to learn by example :) --Waldir (talk) 01:16, 16 November 2012 (UTC)

Capitalize with slurpInterwiki

I think that need a flag to select if first letter must be capitalized or not, to be coherent with Help:Label --ValterVB (talk) 13:23, 7 December 2012 (UTC)

I think it's a good requirement. At the moment almost all the item have the wrong capitalization. :-) Restu20 14:23, 7 December 2012 (UTC)
Most of the items related to people names or geo objects and must be capitalized. Are you sure that you know the rules of all languages to use capitalization flag in other cases? --Zanka (talk) 14:56, 7 December 2012 (UTC)
What about (for example) Lojban where there are no capital letters? Not all languages use the same capitalisation rules as English: for example, in French, languages and nationalities are not capitalised (but names of countries are!). [1]. πr2 (tc) 20:24, 17 December 2012 (UTC)
Some sort of semi-automatic tooling (not necessarily in slurpInterwiki) would definitely be nice, as it isn't very efficient to change labels to lower case one by one. Maybe I'll write the tool when I retire. :) --Silvonen (talk) 18:48, 6 March 2013 (UTC)

Better arguments for WikidataInfo.js on Wikipedia?

How can we convince Wikipedia administrators to include Wikidata related gadgets such as WikidataInfo.js? It was suggested over 6 weeks ago at en:Wikipedia:Gadget/proposals, and still no response. The removal of interlanguage code from some Wikipedias have made it very difficult for the typical user to contribute, and WikidataInfo is a first step to making it easier.Mange01 (talk) 16:22, 4 March 2013 (UTC)

it has some problems:
  1. it works also on (user, talks, mediawiki, file ,...) namespaces
  2. it shows descriptions at the top of pages and some pages they have many redirects (description) so they will be messy!
  3. it has problem to showing some pages because of API bug and says this page doesn't have any item but the Item is existed.▬ Reza1615 / T 16:42, 4 March 2013 (UTC)

Planned tools

We should have a place to list all tools that aren't fully completed yet (or not released at all) but which are currently under active development by someone; so, one could avoid to create such tools, thinking that nobody hasn't created it yet. --Ricordisamoa 21:32, 12 March 2013 (UTC)

New Translation System

I recently created ScriptTranslator.js and implemented it into Archive.js and the pre-existing GeneaWiki.js.

I'd like all of you to try ScriptTranslator for your scripts and comment upon.

Feel free to ask for help. --Ricordisamoa 19:45, 13 March 2013 (UTC)

Well, I am not so familiar with this translation solution because it needs one ajax request per script so that it will take lots of time until all script are loaded completely. Why don't you wait until RL2 is ready? This will make all things much easier. --Bene* talk 16:08, 16 March 2013 (UTC)
I'm fine with RLv2 (I already knew it), but when will it be ready? --Ricordisamoa 16:12, 16 March 2013 (UTC)
That's a good question. However I think we should avoid to create something similar if it is planned to be a feature. --Bene* talk 16:16, 16 March 2013 (UTC)
OK. --Ricordisamoa 16:26, 16 March 2013 (UTC)
I was only thinking of pros (anyone could add translations without editing the script) but the cons (anyone could add malicious translations; the impact on page load would be awful) make me give up. --Ricordisamoa 16:38, 16 March 2013 (UTC)

Opinion

Is User:Ricordisamoa/Rollback.js legitimate? If not, why?

FWIW, popups provides pretty much the same thing for years (though not advertised the same way) and on the French Wikipedia we have a bunch of tools which are very similar.
My opinion is that we don't care. We can't control the tools used anyway, and we block on abuse whatever the tools are.
That being said, since the rollback group exists here and is “no big deal”, why would someone use that script instead of requesting rollback rights? If it's because the rights have been denied, I'm not sure the use of the script is wise.
Best regards — Arkanosis 18:29, 28 March 2013 (UTC)

Formatting and i18n

I noticed that all tools in WD:Tools used a similar structure for documentation, so I created Tool and started to standardize all sections. Adding Autodesc as a gadget

Autodesc is a user script created by Magnus Manske that dynamically generates descriptions from statements, which are displayed in the search results, the search box and when editing claims. It is described in more detail on this page, and it can be tested by adding mw.loader.load('//tools.wmflabs.org/wikidata-todo/autodesc.js'); to common.js. I think this script is sufficiently useful that many editors would benefit from using it, and adding it to the gadgets would give it more visibility.--Underlying lk (talk) 12:36, 18 March 2014 (UTC)

  Support Given that the number of items listed in search results is generally limited, I believe that the improvement to the user experience is worth the extra cost of these API requests. LaddΩ chat ;) 21:51, 18 March 2014 (UTC)
  Support (obviously), though we should probably use the version on English Wikipedia to avoid duplication of effort. It's part of the Wikidata search results shown on several Wikipedias.   Support the quality of many manual descriptions is abysmal. With automated descriptions statements are leveraged in ANY language and they improve as more statements (or the technology behind auto descriptions) improves. GerardM (talk) 10:18, 19 March 2014 (UTC)

Hello,

As part of the Book project, Wikisource pages are begining to be imported here, but it's impossible to quickly preview them using the gadget.

Idea: numerically sorted overview of the total number of interwiki sitelinks per article

It would be nice if there was a special page with a numerically sorted - a descending count (100, 99, 99, 99, 98, etc.) - overview of the total number of interwiki sitelinks per article. Preferably with a filter that allows editors to obtain the overview without a certain language. The reason is that this would be a good way to find subjects editors could create articles about. --82.136.210.153 12:23, 16 April 2015 (UTC)

To give you an example: if there was no article about Tom Cruise at en.wiki, I would get 84 interwiki sitelinks for Tom Cruise when I'd open the overview. I would then know: hey, Tom Cruise, yeah, he could use an article at en.wiki, let's work on that. --82.136.210.153 12:27, 16 April 2015 (UTC)

And you can add &q=claim[31:5] to the URL to get only missing articles about people. --Pasleim (talk) 12:53, 16 April 2015 (UTC)
Thanks! --82.136.210.153 13:21, 16 April 2015 (UTC)

I have a question about the use of item subsets. I've looked into it a bit and your &q=claim[31:5] appears to request a property:item combination, namely an "instance of" (P31) "human" (Q5). I tried using &q=claim[31:17] (Q17; Japan) but it gives 0 results. However, it seems unlikely there are 0 missing articles in English related to Japan. Is there not a single Japan-related thing that a non-English wiki has an article about but en.wiki hasn't? --82.136.210.153 20:47, 20 April 2015 (UTC)

Hm... or is Japan an instance of country? Where can I find a proper overview of all Q-codes I can use? The best thing I've been able to find so far is this, which isn't very useful. --82.136.210.153 20:55, 20 April 2015 (UTC)
What do you mean by statement "is a Japan" (which you pointed)? --Infovarius (talk) 12:32, 21 April 2015 (UTC)
Right now I'm looking for an overview of all Q-codes, so I know what else I can use in place of "5" in &q=claim[31:5]. It's clear that (Q)5 is human, but how would I find the Q-number of, for example, Japan? --82.136.210.153 16:32, 21 April 2015 (UTC)
May be I don't understand your question, but you can reach Q17 by writing your favourite wikiproject article about Japan in Special:ItemByTitle. --Infovarius (talk) 05:15, 22 April 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for trying to help. But the problem I'm running into is that "instance of Japan" (= &q=claim[31:17]) and "instance of country" (= &q=claim[31:6256]) return no hits. Why not? --82.136.210.153 14:40, 22 April 2015 (UTC)
claim[31:17] returns you all items with th claim instance of (P31)Japan (Q17) and apparently, no items have such a claim. In constrast, there are items with claim instance of (P31)country (Q6256) but all those items already have an English article. If you want to find all missing English articles related to Japan, you could check out claim[17:17] or claim[27:17]. P17 is the property country and P27 is country of citizenship. You may also check out the api documentation to understand these queries better. --Pasleim (talk) 17:00, 22 April 2015 (UTC)
Thanks again Pasleim. --82.136.210.153 17:11, 22 April 2015 (UTC)
@82.136.210.153: Also, some way that will work even if the class has subclasses, use which gives this link : all instances of countries. TomT0m (talk)
Unfortunately that limits the sister-project-count for each item to 1, because you're just comparing with de.wiki. --82.136.210.153 16:32, 21 April 2015 (UTC)

Gadget proposal: User:Yair rand/EditTranslatedSections.js

(I don't suppose there actually is a gadgets proposals page somewhere, is there?)

I proposed this on the project chat a few weeks ago, but I didn't really get sufficient response, so I'm trying again here. I propose that the script User:Yair rand/EditTranslatedSections.js, which fills in the /* section */ parts of edit summaries when the header contains the TranslateThis template, be made into a gadget, enabled by default. --Yair rand (talk) 22:54, 23 June 2015 (UTC)

@Yair rand: I don't get the usecase, can you be a little bit more precise ? author  TomT0m / talk page 10:30, 26 November 2015 (UTC)
@TomT0m: Currently, in property proposals, edits to a section will not have the section title or a link to the section in the diff's edit summary. This makes reading the history and understanding changes on the watchlist rather difficult. The script fixes this. --Yair rand (talk) 10:34, 26 November 2015 (UTC)
I'd support then, if that works :) I guess it's a bit hacky. author  TomT0m / talk page 10:41, 26 November 2015 (UTC)
@Yair rand: I was thinking if we could set-up a "less hacky" solution and the resut of my thought is ... would Flow work ? The topics titles are language independant. author  TomT0m / talk page 11:01, 26 November 2015 (UTC)
Flow doesn't allow wikicode in titles, so there's no way to localize section headings, unfortunately. --Yair rand (talk) 11:40, 26 November 2015 (UTC)
Hmm, Flow will soon allow plain wikilinks in topic titles by using the limited edit-summary parser (phab:T59153).
However, allowing full wikitext in topic titles, would require running the full parser, and (IIUC) that creates a whole bunch of complexity and potential problems - for example: needing to sanitize interlanguage links and category links (fr:foo and ) and file links ().
The aspect we're interested in here, template expansion, would need to be turned off in most instances (e.g. infobox person), but allowed in some instances (e.g. TranslateThis). I don't know if/how that could be done.
I'll ask the devs for more details, but most of them are out for a long-weekend, so Monday at the earliest. Hope that helps. Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 19:05, 26 November 2015 (UTC)

DuplicateReferences gadget behaves buggy

Dear - where to start?..

When you (manually) add a reference, it doesn't get that "copy" link right away. You first have to reload the page before you can use the gadget on it. This could leave me being faster with a oldfashioned manual copy and makes the gadget of questionable use.

It causes a lot of confusion by making the page content jump around because of content boxes growing and shrinking all over the page due to the "paste reference" links it puts all over the page. (Content jumps instead of performing the usual slide.) If you hit a "copy" link, the statement with the source reference jumps down and you find your mouse pointer over the next statement above.

It happily lets you paste a copied reference as a duplicate right next to the original. You do this easily in all the confusion from content jumping around.

If you instead try to paste to a different statement that has a qualifier statement with it, when you hit that "paste reference" link it first fails with an error message appearing in the upper right corner of the page. If you hit it a second time after that, it pastes just as if nothing happened. But then you find out that in the process it just swallowed that qualifier statement from the statement you pasted a reference to.

Right after entering a new claim (at least if you do it next to an existing one for the same property) you have to reload the page before you can copy a reference (from its neighbour) to it. --Frysch (talk) 00:15, 26 November 2015 (UTC)

See also WD:DEVS#Adding reference. @Lea Lacroix (WMDE): @Bene*:. author  TomT0m / talk page 10:29, 26 November 2015 (UTC)
Sorry that this gadget doesn't work very well for you. I'll try to understand and fix the issues you noticed.
> When you (manually) add a reference, it doesn't get that "copy" link right away.
When I add a reference to an existing statement, it also gets a copy link for me. Only if you create a new statement it doesn't get a copy link on its references which I will try to fix.
> It causes a lot of confusion by making the page content jump around because of content boxes growing
I don't really understand that. It only adds another button next to the [add reference] one but nothing moves or jumps for me here.
> If you instead try to paste to a different statement that has a qualifier statement with it, when you hit that "paste reference" link it first fails with an error message appearing in the upper right corner of the page.
Weird. I will try to find out what the issue is here but all I use are the standard api methods wikibase provides.
Best regards, -- Bene* talk 15:37, 1 December 2015 (UTC)

Jumping content: It adds only one line per box, but with objects that have a lengthy lists of properties it accumulates. Those extra lines appear from one moment to the other and without the animated transition that the interface otherwise shows. So it breaks with the usual behaviour of the interface. And at least in Firefox, when I've scrolled half way down the page, after the expansion of the page I end up at the same point as measured from the top of the page, not measured in relation to page lenght. So I don't find my mouse pointer over the same part of the page anymore. The content "jumped". In my case by nearly exactly as much as one box, so I ended up clicking the wrong buttons before I painfully learned to pay close attention.

If you can't reproduce right away, try changing your language settings. With english "[add reference|insert reference]" still fits the content box in one line, if it gets a little longer it breaks into a second line.--Frysch (talk) 20:14, 4 December 2015 (UTC)

globe-parameter

User:Molarus/globe.js is a small script for the problem, that it is not possible to change the globe-parameter by hand. This parameter is always the earth (Q2) if the data is inserted by hand, even if something is actual on the mars. wbEntity config variable to be deprecated

Hello,

This is an important message for people who develop gadgets or user scripts for Wikidata’s frontend.

We plan to deprecate the wbEntity javascript config variable in the next months. The variable is currently used on every page load, even if when it is not useful (for example on mobile). With that change, we will increase the load speed of the entity pages. After that the expression mw.config.get( 'wbEntity' ); will not work any more. All code that uses this config variable should be migrated towards using the Mediawiki hook wikibase.entityPage.entityLoaded.

When a user opens an entity page (item or property), as soon as the JSON representation of the entity stored on the current entity page is loaded, the Mediawiki hook wikibase.entityPage.entityLoaded is triggered. Listener callbacks should expect the entity as a native JavaScript object (the parsed JSON serialization) passed as the first (and only) argument.

Note: The entity object is completely frozen (read-only) to avoid the case when one of the clients accidentally changes it and breaks other clients.

Here are a few examples on how you can use it:

// Basic usage
mw.hook( 'wikibase.entityPage.entityLoaded' ).add( function ( entity ) {
  'use strict';
  // Your code goes here
  console.log( entity );
} );

// Convert to jQuery promise
var entityPromise = $.Deferred( function ( deferred ) {
  mw.hook( 'wikibase.entityPage.entityLoaded' ).add( function ( entity ) {
     deferred.resolve( entity );
  } );
} ).promise();

// Convert to native promise
var entityPromise = new Promise( function ( resolve ) {
  mw.hook( 'wikibase.entityPage.entityLoaded' ).add( function ( entity ) {
     resolve( entity );
  } );
} );

See also: the related ticket, the code of wikibase.entityPage.entityLoaded.

If you have any question or need support with migrating specific gadgets, feel free to write to me. Thanks, Lea Lacroix (WMDE) (talk) 09:29, 18 July 2017 (UTC)

List redesign

Per the arguments provided on phabricator:T129063 I created five new tool lists:

The tools are grouped by purpose of use. The color codes on each tool are indicataing one of the classes gadget, user script or external tool.

Feedback is welcome! --Pasleim (talk) 09:30, 2 September 2017 (UTC)

Good only if they were updated with ListeriaBot and not manual. d1g (talk) 10:18, 2 September 2017 (UTC)
Images are not aligned vertically e.g. with "Propbrowse" d1g (talk) 10:24, 2 September 2017 (UTC)
To get updates by ListeriaBot would mean that an item for each tool has to be created. This is around the same amount of work as creating a manual entry to the list.
The screenshots are already in the current list not aligned. I don't know how to fix this. --Pasleim (talk) 10:34, 2 September 2017 (UTC)
Looks good! Stryn (talk) 10:58, 2 September 2017 (UTC)

Introducing Toolhub

What does your participation on the Wikimedia projects look like? Do you edit articles? Upload files? Patrol vandalism? Translate articles? Translate interface messages? Do you organize people, online or offline? Do you train new editors, or new trainers? Do you write code?

There are many different ways to contribute to Wikimedia – more than you would expect just from reading Wikipedia articles. Over the past several years, volunteers have developed technical tools that help Wikimedians improve content, patrol vandalism, and perform many other tasks. They make it possible to do what the wiki software alone cannot accomplish. Without these tools, many of our projects would slow down to a crawl.

I am very happy to announce a new project called Toolhub which seeks to create a searchable index of these tools in all languages. We are building this tool catalog based on what our communities need. If you would like to help, please take a look at m:Toolhub and review the question at the top of the page. You can also leave feedback in any language on the talkpage. You can also email me private feedback. Harej (WMF) (talk) 23:36, 2 June 2018 (UTC)

Proposals, Wishes

Ideas for tools - but no programming skills? Put them here.

Tool: suggestion for name

If the name-field in the selected language is empty but there's already an linked Wikipedia-Article for this language, suggestion this as name for the Item and let it be set by one click. Ideally remove all brackets from the end of the Article name: foo (disambiguation) -> foo. –– MichaelSchoenitzer (talk) 21:03, 7 November 2012 (UTC)

Bene* works on a script like that (in german: User talk:Bene*#Scriptfrage). --CENNOXX (talk) 23:07, 7 November 2012 (UTC)
I thought of the same, and created something very simple at User:Waldir/autoFill.js. --Waldir (talk) 19:34, 15 November 2012 (UTC)

Tool: Also known as...

As one can see in Q25369 (Kobe Bryant), it's kinda annoying to write the same for every language in the Also known as column. A tool that would help doing this without needing 1000 edits would be useful. Lukas²³ talk in GermanContribs 23:52, 11 November 2012 (UTC)

Why are they being added at all? Many languages don't use Latin script, so they are not appropriate aliases. --Yair rand (talk) 07:13, 14 November 2012 (UTC)

Tool: Bilingual CreateItem

A lot of users know their mother tongue and a world language, such as English. At this point, when there's a huge number of items to be created, it would be useful to offer the Label and Description fields in two languages (more would be confusing) - one with the user set language and the other with a drop-down menu that would affect both fields. Alternatively, the user set language and English only would go a long way too. Anyone up to the task? — Yerpo Eh? 20:19, 12 November 2012 (UTC)

It seems a good idea. -- Yiyi (talk!) 23:09, 12 November 2012 (UTC)
I think it would not be very difficult. I will try to create the script. --Bene* (talk) 15:37, 13 November 2012 (UTC)

Tool: PD

The Persondata (Personendaten) in the German Wikipedia about nearly every person includes a short summary (Kurzbeschreibung), which could be importet with a script as german description.--CENNOXX (talk) 16:01, 24 November 2012 (UTC)

Add or edit multiple languages at once

As stated elsewhere, it would be great to be able to add or edit labels, descriptions and aliasses in multiple languages at once. I imagine having an writable table, where all changes may be saved at the end. --Leyo 18:03, 5 December 2012 (UTC)

Wikipedia-tool: highlight pages which are not at Wikidata yet

Easy tool which highlights pages which are not in Wikidata yet. Would be handy, and maybe not too hard to make? Thanks. --Stryn (talk) 11:10, 31 January 2013 (UTC)

I'm not sure what you mean. Do you mean highlight all links to articles which don't have connected Wikidata items? --Yair rand (talk) 11:37, 31 January 2013 (UTC)
Yes. --Stryn (talk) 12:00, 31 January 2013 (UTC)
User:Yair rand/HighlightUncreated.js. Probably still has some bugs. One significant issue is that most hits appear to be just links to redirects, and while they technically don't have associated Wikidata items, they're probably not what you're looking for. I don't think there's any simple way to "follow" the redirects and check whether the eventual target page has an associated entity (at least not without slowing things down a lot), but it would be simple to just have the script ignore the redirect links entirely. Would that be preferable? --Yair rand (talk) 13:09, 31 January 2013 (UTC)
Thanks a lot, really helpful tool! Looks like that it doesn't understand special letters, like "ä", "ö", "Š", "ć". Yes, maybe some other script which ignore redirects would be good, if possible. --Stryn (talk) 13:18, 31 January 2013 (UTC)

Find homonyms without description

A script could search in a given language for two (or more) items, witch have the same title (Homonym) and witch both have no description, and weekly create a list of those homonyms. Such items are problematic, because you can mix them up easily when adding them as statement. -- MichaelSchoenitzer (talk) 20:42, 3 March 2013 (UTC)

Transliteration of string properties

It would probably be useful to have strings that add, say, the Russian name of a Russian guy, but it would not be very readable to non-Russian speakers. Could we imagine a tool that would transliterate it into the user language. There are usually well defined method to transliterate from one language to another, though there are also some tricky cases. mw:Extension:Transliterator seems to do something similar. --Zolo (talk) 10:26, 7 March 2013 (UTC)

Thanks, It has a critical bug and I have some suggestions
  1. it shouldn't overwrite. maybe user wrote an id by mistake for example instead of Q123 he wrote Q1234 after that it will mess other item! it should send an alarm which says the target item has en:text interwiki are you sure to overwrite? and only overwrite when target interwiki doesn't exist (deleted from locale wiki)
  2. don't overwrite interwiki on target interwiki when the target existing. i.e. if en:A requested to overwrite to en:B if en:B existed it sent an alarm you will miss en:B before this moving take a decision for en:B!
suggestion 1: it should also accept profix and page title (working with item id number is boring and causing mistake is more that title name)
suggestion 2:have an option to move slected interwikis of an item to other ( merge two items) it will useful when number of interwikis are more that 1 and moving interwikis one by one is boring. it can offer a check box and then move the checked items at on edit▬ Reza1615 / T 09:57, 9 March 2013 (UTC)
doesn't work for me: after clicking on move there is just this waiting-wheel, but nothing else happens. --Akkakk (talk) 12:03, 9 March 2013 (UTC)
works now, thanks! --Akkakk (talk) 12:45, 9 March 2013 (UTC)
i would prefer beeing on the source page after the move instead of the target page. usually the target page is opened in another tab, and i have to do more on the source page (e.g. moving other links, request deletion) --Akkakk (talk) 13:19, 9 March 2013 (UTC)
now it works, but the popup doesn't close. it shows the waiting-wheel. --Akkakk (talk) 21:33, 9 March 2013 (UTC)

Once the new property type is available, could it do a conversion like the one discussed at Wikidata:Requests_for_deletions#Property:P222? --  Docu  at 05:39, 10 March 2013 (UTC)
that's something completly different. make a new section. --Akkakk (talk) 05:51, 10 March 2013 (UTC)
Practically, it would a merge of properties with different types and a copy of labels/descriptions from one property to the other. It might need some manual tweaks for that sample (not all strings might be in English). --  Docu  at 05:59, 10 March 2013 (UTC)
i understand the problem, but it's something completly different. therefore this is now a new section. --Akkakk (talk) 06:16, 10 March 2013 (UTC)
I don't see it that way. Sorry. Please don't edit my posts and/or move them to other sections. --  Docu  at 06:27, 10 March 2013 (UTC)

Find items to merge

A tool that compiles lists of items that have the same label in different languages and no conflicting sitelinks (conflicting: both have a sitelink for the same language). To extend it, aliases could be checked, too. To improve results, properties could be checked (matches might suggest identity, discrepancies are likely to eliminate it). To limit the number of results, must-have properties could be given, or search could be limited to a category in one Wikipedia. To allow faster human checking of the results, result page should display descriptions (and possibly a way to edit them). --93.94.65.67 13:37, 19 March 2013 (UTC)

Sounds challenging! WIP. --Ricordisamoa 17:40, 19 March 2013 (UTC)

Keyboard shortcuts

I know many languages, so for me the labels/descriptions take up more than the first screen of an item. Because of this, I think it would be nice if you could be able to just press a key to take you to various sections of a page (sort of like when you press "N" on Google Reader it takes you to the next unread post).

My suggestions for shortcuts are:

  • L to move cursor to Label box (so you can press "L" and then immediately start writing)
  • D to move cursor to Description box
  • S to navigate to "Statements" heading
  • A to highlight the "[add]" under Statements (or preferrably to have the same effect as clicking "[add]")
  • I to navigate to "List of pages linked to this item" heading

I don't have any coding skills to speak of, but if someone could make something like this I would be very grateful. :-) Jon Harald Søby (talk) 20:36, 23 March 2013 (UTC)

@Ricordisamoa: Now that the labels/descriptions interface has changed, L and D don't work. Would it be possible to make "L" work like "A" and have the same effect as clicking the "edit" link for the labels/descriptions? I experimented a bit and $(".wikibase-entitytermsview .wikibase-toolbar-button-edit").find('a').first().click(); seems to work for clicking the "edit" link. - Nikki (talk) 22:41, 2 May 2015 (UTC)

@Nikki: I experimented a bit, but couldn't manage to focus the description field with D. I've used your suggestion in Special:Diff/214057567, so at least L should work now. --Ricordisamoa 23:39, 2 May 2015 (UTC)

special watch list for item's links connection

In many cases users abuse or change or remove language links in items and no-one revert before that users could revert it in wikipedia or interwiki bots correct it based on other wikis but now it is not possible!

we need tool to monitor items which are belong to user's watched pages in wikipedia or wikidata.

for example we can define a JS tool which check if connection of predefine links are broken or changed it shows alarm to user.

user can define a list in his subpage like below and tool check the connection if they are true leave it. if they changed or removed it shows a popup alarm!

  • de:buck-en:book-it:Libro-fa:کتاب
  • it:italia-en:italy-fa:ایتالیا

Duplicate labels and aliases

I was trying to do this myself, but with no success – I'd love a tool that gives me a button next to the label edit fields and alias edit fields that lets me duplicate that label or alias to all the languages I have switched on. I was actually able to make it work locally (screenshot), but I'm not able to transfer that to live use on Wikidata. @Ricordisamoa: Maybe you can help, since you were so quick with my last request? 😊 Jon Harald Søby (talk) 02:55, 12 March 2017 (UTC)

Clear item

In some cases, I think it would be useful to have an easy way to clear an item. In my usecase I would like to be able to clear everything except sitelinks (so, labels, descriptions and statements) to prepare an item for a merge. Where I could need this is cases where an item has (wrongly?) been marked as a disambiguation page while in reality it is an item for a surname or first name, and I've created a separate item for the name. In that case they should be merged, but I don't want any of the descriptions saying it's a disambiguation page (since it isn't) to be added to the merged item. Is this something that someone could easily make? Jon Harald Søby (talk) 15:00, 25 June 2017 (UTC)

@Jon Harald Søby: admins have MediaWiki:Gadget-dataDrainer.js. --Edgars2007 (talk) 15:47, 25 June 2017 (UTC)
Yes, but very important: never merge disambiguation with other type of item, it's wrong for the history of the item. If the sitelink is wrong you can move the sitelink. --ValterVB (talk) 16:59, 25 June 2017 (UTC)
@ValterVB: I'm only talking about cases where, if you move the sitelink, the disambiguation item would have no sitelinks. Then it would qualify for deletion, but it's better to redirect it. But you don't want it to say it's a disambiguation when it's not. An example of what I mean: Q10725141 is marked as a disambiguation, while the only sitelink in that item is a surname-only disambiguation page (which is usually marked as surname in Wikidata). Therefore it should be merged with Q30512398, but before I can do that I need to remove the descriptions saying that the former is a disambiguation item, to avoid confusion in various languages. Several times I've had issues where an item was described as disambiguation in some languages and surname in others, which is what I want to avoid by emptying one item before a merge. Anyways, the gadget Edgars2007 linked seems promising for this purpose. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 21:08, 25 June 2017 (UTC)
No, it's a very big error, you can't merge an empty disambiguation item with an item about fruit, or an item about city or an item about name, they are very different things, and if a disambiguation item is without sitelink we delete it, we don't merge. You can merge disambiguation item only with disambiguation item. For disambiguation item I mean an item that has had for some time P31=Q4167410 --ValterVB (talk) 22:54, 25 June 2017 (UTC)
@ValterVB: I don't see the logic there at all… The item was always about the surname, it just had an incorrect P31 here in Wikidata (which in turn led to the disambig descriptions). I believe the sitelink that the item was created for defines what the item is about, not what P31 it was arbitrarily given later on. Do you disagree? If so, why? Jon Harald Søby (talk) 23:16, 25 June 2017 (UTC)
A disambiguation is a page with a list of "word" homographs, sometime the list can be a list of surname but if it is marked as "Disambigaution" you can't be sure that you have only a list of surname- If the sitelink is wrong you must fix the sitelink not the item. --ValterVB (talk) 23:24, 25 June 2017 (UTC)
@Edgars2007: That's perfect, thank you! Jon Harald Søby (talk) 21:08, 25 June 2017 (UTC)

I have changed "disambiguation" items into other things before, because some language Wikipedias do not distinguish between a "topical index" and a "disambiguation page". So we regularly get items that describe a well-defined topic area but are incorrectly marked as "disambiguation", but some sitelinks are actually articles about the broad topic. In that case the right thing to do is to clear all the "disambiguation" labels and descriptions and replace them with a description of the actual topic. The problem is that Wikidata is used also outside of Wikimedia projects. If some site outside use an item and this item is a disambiguation, and after some month we change the type of item, we create an error in a external site. The stability of our data is fundamental. It's better for externale site have an error, easy to detect, that have a wrong data. --ValterVB (talk) 16:47, 8 October 2017 (UTC)
Many times, I had to clean an item wrongly tagged as disambig, (through the Game for instance), many of them by the same person, many of them months ago… The problem is Valterbot then applying the description to all languages..., once, twice, thrice, and more ! cleaning it up is really long (over 10 minutes) for a single fast error, once ! Being able to clean that type of mess is necessary... --Hsarrazin (talk) 18:40, 8 October 2017 (UTC)
If an item is defined as a disambiguation at Wikidata and a sitelink on such an item is about a person, a new item for the person should be made. One should avoid re-purposing items.

Go directly to item after saving

Hi, I'm wondering if someone could help me make a script. I want a script that, when I've added a surname property, takes me to that surname item directly after I've saved. I only want this to happen with the surname property (family name (P734)), and not any other properties I save. Is this doable? Jon Harald Søby (talk) 11:38, 20 February 2018 (UTC)

Inverse properties

Could someone create a tool based on inverse property (P1696) which allows a user to add in the inverse item Q2 the inverse property P2 with one clic on the inverse property P1 in the inverse item Q1? Example: if deme (Q672490) has topic's main category (P910)Category:Demoi (Q8373159), this tool would allow me to add with one clic category's main topic (P301)deme (Q672490) in Category:Demoi (Q8373159); or viceversa. This would be really really useful! Thank you, --Epìdosis 15:44, 21 May 2018 (UTC)
