show/edit all labels/descriptions

as Wikidata:Tools#LabelLister, but show them directly on the page, not on popup and allow to edit them without entering the language. Help needed

Can someone help me finish the implementation of User:Waldir/autoFill.js? It's almost done, but I'm stuck at how to make the "save" link active (right now I have to manually change something in the text box to trigger the change). Capitalize with slurpInterwiki

Most of the items related to people names or geo objects and must be capitalized. Are you sure that you know the rules of all languages to use capitalization flag in other cases? --Zanka (talk) 14:56, 7 December 2012 (UTC)

What about (for example) Lojban where there are no capital letters? Not all languages use the same capitalisation rules as English: for example, in French, languages and nationalities are not capitalised (but names of countries are!). [1]. πr² (t • c) 20:24, 17 December 2012 (UTC)

Better arguments for WikidataInfo.js on Wikipedia?

How can we convince Wikipedia administrators to include Wikidata related gadgets such as WikidataInfo.js? It was suggested over 6 weeks ago at en:Wikipedia:Gadget/proposals, and still no response. The removal of interlanguage code from some Wikipedias have made it very difficult for the typical user to contribute, and WikidataInfo is a first step to making it easier.Mange01 (talk) 16:22, 4 March 2013 (UTC)

it has some problems:

1. it works also on (user, talks, mediawiki, file ,...) namespaces
2. it shows descriptions at the top of pages and some pages they have many redirects (description) so they will be messy!

Planned tools

New Translation System

I recently created ScriptTranslator.js and implemented it into Archive.js and the pre-existing GeneaWiki.js.

Opinion

Is User:Ricordisamoa/Rollback.js legitimate? If not, why?

FWIW, popups provides pretty much the same thing for years (though not advertised the same way) and on the French Wikipedia we have a bunch of tools which are very similar.

My opinion is that we don't care. We can't control the tools used anyway, and we block on abuse whatever the tools are.

That being said, since the rollback group exists here and is “no big deal”, why would someone use that script instead of requesting rollback rights? If it's because the rights have been denied, I'm not sure the use of the script is wise.

I noticed that all tools in WD:Tools used a similar structure for documentation, so I created {{Tool}} and started to standardize all sections. Adding Autodesc as a gadget

Autodesc is a user script created by Magnus Manske that dynamically generates descriptions from statements, which are displayed in the search results, the search box and when editing claims. It is described in more detail on this page, and it can be tested by adding mw.loader.load('//tools.wmflabs.org/wikidata-todo/autodesc.js'); to common.js. I think this script is sufficiently useful that many editors would benefit from using it, and adding it to the gadgets would give it more visibility.--Underlying lk (talk) 12:36, 18 March 2014 (UTC)

I just had a chat with a colleague yesterday who happens to maintain a genealogy software on SourceForce. We agreed that there exists no good software to show large genealogy trees (yes, plenty of graph-drawing software out there, we know; nothing that suits the purpose though). I'll have to write one. Preview gadget does not work on wikisource pages, even those not transcluded...

Idea: numerically sorted overview of the total number of interwiki sitelinks per article

It would be nice if there was a special page with a numerically sorted - a descending count (100, 99, 99, 99, 98, etc.) - overview of the total number of interwiki sitelinks per article. Preferably with a filter that allows editors to obtain the overview without a certain language. I have a question about the use of item subsets. I've looked into it a bit and your &q=claim[31:5] appears to request a property:item combination, namely an "instance of" (P31) "human" (Q5). I tried using &q=claim[31:17] (Q17; Japan) but it gives 0 results. However, it seems unlikely there are 0 missing articles in English related to Japan. claim[31:17] returns you all items with th claim instance of (P31)Japan (Q17) and apparently, no items have such a claim. In constrast, there are items with claim instance of (P31)country (Q6256) but all those items already have an English article. If you want to find all missing English articles related to Japan, you could check out claim[17:17] or claim[27:17]. P17 is the property country and P27 is country of citizenship. @TomT0m: Currently, in property proposals, edits to a section will not have the section title or a link to the section in the diff's edit summary. Flow doesn't allow wikicode in titles, so there's no way to localize section headings, unfortunately. --Yair rand (talk) 11:40, 26 November 2015 (UTC)

Hmm, Flow will soon allow plain wikilinks in topic titles by using the limited edit-summary parser (phab:T59153).

However, allowing full wikitext in topic titles, would require running the full parser, and (IIUC) that creates a whole bunch of complexity and potential problems - for example: needing to sanitize interlanguage links and category links ([[fr:foo]] and [[Category:Foo]]) and file links ([[File:massive image.jpg]]).

The aspect we're interested in here, template expansion, would need to be turned off in most instances (e.g. {{infobox person}}), but allowed in some instances (e.g. {{TranslateThis}}). I don't know if/how that could be done.

DuplicateReferences gadget behaves buggy

Dear - where to start?..

When you (manually) add a reference, it doesn't get that "copy" link right away. You first have to reload the page before you can use the gadget on it. This could leave me being faster with a oldfashioned manual copy and makes the gadget of questionable use.

It causes a lot of confusion by making the page content jump around because of content boxes growing and shrinking all over the page due to the "paste reference" links it puts all over the page. (Content jumps instead of performing the usual slide.) If you hit a "copy" link, the statement with the source reference jumps down and you find your mouse pointer over the next statement above.

It happily lets you paste a copied reference as a duplicate right next to the original. You do this easily in all the confusion from content jumping around.

If you instead try to paste to a different statement that has a qualifier statement with it, when you hit that "paste reference" link it first fails with an error message appearing in the upper right corner of the page. If you hit it a second time after that, it pastes just as if nothing happened. But then you find out that in the process it just swallowed that qualifier statement from the statement you pasted a reference to.

Right after entering a new claim (at least if you do it next to an existing one for the same property) you have to reload the page before you can copy a reference (from its neighbour) to it. --Frysch (talk) 00:15, 26 November 2015 (UTC)

Sorry that this gadget doesn't work very well for you. I'll try to understand and fix the issues you noticed.

When I add a reference to an existing statement, it also gets a copy link for me. Only if you create a new statement it doesn't get a copy link on its references which I will try to fix.

Jumping content: It adds only one line per box, but with objects that have a lengthy lists of properties it accumulates. Those extra lines appear from one moment to the other and without the animated transition that the interface otherwise shows. So it breaks with the usual behaviour of the interface. And at least in Firefox, when I've scrolled half way down the page, after the expansion of the page I end up at the same point as measured from the top of the page, not measured in relation to page lenght. So I don't find my mouse pointer over the same part of the page anymore. The content "jumped". In my case by nearly exactly as much as one box, so I ended up clicking the wrong buttons before I painfully learned to pay close attention.

If you can't reproduce right away, try changing your language settings. With english "[add reference|insert reference]" still fits the content box in one line, if it gets a little longer it breaks into a second line.--Frysch (talk) 20:14, 4 December 2015 (UTC)

globe-parameter

User:Molarus/globe.js is a small script for the problem, that it is not possible to change the globe-parameter by hand. This parameter is always the earth (Q2) if the data is inserted by hand, even if something is actual on the mars. wbEntity config variable to be deprecated

Hello,

This is an important message for people who develop gadgets or user scripts for Wikidata’s frontend.

We plan to deprecate the wbEntity javascript config variable in the next months. The variable is currently used on every page load, even if when it is not useful (for example on mobile). With that change, we will increase the load speed of the entity pages. After that the expression mw.config.get( 'wbEntity' ); will not work any more. All code that uses this config variable should be migrated towards using the Mediawiki hook wikibase.entityPage.entityLoaded.

When a user opens an entity page (item or property), as soon as the JSON representation of the entity stored on the current entity page is loaded, the Mediawiki hook wikibase.entityPage.entityLoaded is triggered. Listener callbacks should expect the entity as a native JavaScript object (the parsed JSON serialization) passed as the first (and only) argument.

Note: The entity object is completely frozen (read-only) to avoid the case when one of the clients accidentally changes it and breaks other clients.

Here are a few examples on how you can use it:

List redesign

Per the arguments provided on phabricator:T129063 I created five new tool lists:

• Wikidata:Tools/Edit items
• Wikidata:Tools/Query data
• Wikidata:Tools/Enhance user interface
• Wikidata:Tools/Visualize data
• Wikidata:Tools/For programmers

The tools are grouped by purpose of use. The color codes on each tool are indicataing one of the classes gadget, user script or external tool.

Introducing Toolhub

What does your participation on the Wikimedia projects look like? Do you edit articles? Upload files? Patrol vandalism? Translate articles? Translate interface messages? Do you organize people, online or offline? Do you train new editors, or new trainers? Do you write code?

There are many different ways to contribute to Wikimedia – more than you would expect just from reading Wikipedia articles. Over the past several years, volunteers have developed technical tools that help Wikimedians improve content, patrol vandalism, and perform many other tasks. They make it possible to do what the wiki software alone cannot accomplish. Without these tools, many of our projects would slow down to a crawl.

I am very happy to announce a new project called Toolhub which seeks to create a searchable index of these tools in all languages. Tool: Bilingual CreateItem

A lot of users know their mother tongue and a world language, such as English. At this point, when there's a huge number of items to be created, it would be useful to offer the Label and Description fields in two languages (more would be confusing) - one with the user set language and the other with a drop-down menu that would affect both fields. User:Yair rand/HighlightUncreated.js. Probably still has some bugs. One significant issue is that most hits appear to be just links to redirects, and while they technically don't have associated Wikidata items, they're probably not what you're looking for. I don't think there's any simple way to "follow" the redirects and check whether the eventual target page has an associated entity (at least not without slowing things down a lot), but it would be simple to just have the script ignore the redirect links entirely. Find homonyms without description

A script could search in a given language for two (or more) items, witch have the same title (Homonym) and witch both have no description, and weekly create a list of those homonyms. Transliteration of string properties

It would probably be useful to have strings that add, say, the Russian name of a Russian guy, but it would not be very readable to non-Russian speakers. Could we imagine a tool that would transliterate it into the user language. Thanks, It has a critical bug and I have some suggestions

1. it shouldn't overwrite. maybe user wrote an id by mistake for example instead of Q123 he wrote Q1234 after that it will mess other item! it should send an alarm which says the target item has en:text interwiki are you sure to overwrite? and only overwrite when target interwiki doesn't exist (deleted from locale wiki)
2. don't overwrite interwiki on target interwiki when the target existing. i.e. if en:A requested to overwrite to en:B if en:B existed it sent an alarm you will miss en:B before this moving take a decision for en:B!

suggestion 1: it should also accept profix and page title (working with item id number is boring and causing mistake is more that title name)

Find items to merge

A tool that compiles lists of items that have the same label in different languages and no conflicting sitelinks (conflicting: both have a sitelink for the same language). To extend it, aliases could be checked, too. To improve results, properties could be checked (matches might suggest identity, discrepancies are likely to eliminate it). To limit the number of results, must-have properties could be given, or search could be limited to a category in one Wikipedia. Keyboard shortcuts

I know many languages, so for me the labels/descriptions take up more than the first screen of an item. Because of this, I think it would be nice if you could be able to just press a key to take you to various sections of a page (sort of like when you press "N" on Google Reader it takes you to the next unread post).

My suggestions for shortcuts are:

• L to move cursor to Label box (so you can press "L" and then immediately start writing)
• D to move cursor to Description box
• S to navigate to "Statements" heading
• A to highlight the "[add]" under Statements (or preferrably to have the same effect as clicking "[add]")
• I to navigate to "List of pages linked to this item" heading

User:Denny/articlePreview.js already provides something for the text (and also the preview gadget, but only when you select it, and that in the interwiki, so rather toward the botoom of the page). When watching a lot of items, you'll have a lot of entries in your watch list saying that the label or description in an language has been changed. Get old-fashioned interwiki link list to copy & Paste

Since Wikidata does not yet include the Commons (something I really cannot understand at all), this is still needed. It has become impossible to copy & paste interwiki data from any wikipedia article to use for interwiki-linking in Commons categories and galleries. special watch list for item's links connection

In many cases users abuse or change or remove language links in items and no-one revert before that users could revert it in wikipedia or interwiki bots correct it based on other wikis but now it is not possible!

we need tool to monitor items which are belong to user's watched pages in wikipedia or wikidata.

for example we can define a JS tool which check if connection of predefine links are broken or changed it shows alarm to user.

user can define a list in his subpage like below and tool check the connection if they are true leave it. if they changed or removed it shows a popup alarm!

Tool to show how many links in items

Could be useful in Special:NewPages when checking if there is items without sitelinks. It could show how many links is in item, or highlight the item if there is no links at all. Then we should just check whether there is links to the page, and if not, then delete. Duplicate labels and aliases

I was trying to do this myself, but with no success – I'd love a tool that gives me a button next to the label edit fields and alias edit fields that lets me duplicate that label or alias to all the languages I have switched on. Clear item

In some cases, I think it would be useful to have an easy way to clear an item. In my usecase I would like to be able to clear everything except sitelinks (so, labels, descriptions and statements) to prepare an item for a merge. Where I could need this is cases where an item has (wrongly?) been marked as a disambiguation page while in reality it is an item for a surname or first name, and I've created a separate item for the name. In that case they should be merged, but I don't want any of the descriptions saying it's a disambiguation page (since it isn't) to be added to the merged item. @ValterVB: I'm only talking about cases where, if you move the sitelink, the disambiguation item would have no sitelinks. Then it would qualify for deletion, but it's better to redirect it. But you don't want it to say it's a disambiguation when it's not. An example of what I mean: Q10725141 is marked as a disambiguation, while the only sitelink in that item is a surname-only disambiguation page (which is usually marked as surname in Wikidata). Therefore it should be merged with Q30512398, but before I can do that I need to remove the descriptions saying that the former is a disambiguation item, to avoid confusion in various languages. Several times I've had issues where an item was described as disambiguation in some languages and surname in others, which is what I want to avoid by emptying one item before a merge. No, it's a very big error, you can't merge an empty disambiguation item with an item about fruit, or an item about city or an item about name, they are very different things, and if a disambiguation item is without sitelink we delete it, we don't merge. @ValterVB: I don't see the logic there at all… The item was always about the surname, it just had an incorrect P31 here in Wikidata (which in turn led to the disambig descriptions). I believe the sitelink that the item was created for defines what the item is about, not what P31 it was arbitrarily given later on. Do you disagree? If so, why? A disambiguation is a page with a list of "word" homographs, sometime the list can be a list of surname but if it is marked as "Disambigaution" you can't be sure that you have only a list of surname- If the sitelink is wrong you must fix the sitelink not the item. --ValterVB (talk) 23:24, 25 June 2017 (UTC)

I have changed "disambiguation" items into other things before, because some language Wikipedias do not distinguish between a "topical index" and a "disambiguation page". So we regularly get items that describe a well-defined topic area but are incorrectly marked as "disambiguation", but some sitelinks are actually articles about the broad topic. In that case the right thing to do is to clear all the "disambiguation" labels and descriptions and replace them with a description of the actual topic. The problem is that Wikidata is used also outside of Wikimedia projects. If some site outside use an item and this item is a disambiguation, and after some month we change the type of item, we create an error in a external site. The stability of our data is fundamental. Many times, I had to clean an item wrongly tagged as disambig, (through the Game for instance), many of them by the same person, many of them months ago… The problem is Valterbot then applying the description to all languages..., once, twice, thrice, and more ! cleaning it up is really long (over 10 minutes) for a single fast error, once ! If an item is defined as a disambiguation at Wikidata and a sitelink on such an item is about a person, a new item for the person should be made. One should avoid re-purposing items.

Go directly to item after saving

Hi, I'm wondering if someone could help me make a script. I want a script that, when I've added a surname property, takes me to that surname item directly after I've saved. Could someone create a tool based on inverse property (P1696) which allows a user to add in the inverse item Q2 the inverse property P2 with one clic on the inverse property P1 in the inverse item Q1? Example: if deme (Q672490) has topic's main category (P910)Category:Demoi (Q8373159), this tool would allow me to add with one clic category's main topic (P301)deme (Q672490) in Category:Demoi (Q8373159); or viceversa.
