Can't find a Wikidata entry

Hi I have previously made edits to a wikidata entity for luiz ildefonso simões lopes. I can't seem to find this entry any more, Could someone please help me locate it. Thanks  – The preceding unsigned comment was added by 5.62.12.166 (talk • contribs) at 14:53, 31 January 2016‎ (UTC).

I can't find it too and I also can't find any (deleted) contributions on this IP adress. Makes it difficult to find it. Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 14:55, 31 January 2016 (UTC)
Good match: Ildefonso Simões Lopes (Q10301036). Did you look for this one? —MisterSynergy (talk) 14:59, 31 January 2016 (UTC) :Another idea: pt:Luiz Ildefonso Simões Lopes was recently deleted at ptwiki due to lack of notability. Maybe the corresponding Wikidata item was deleted as well?! —MisterSynergy (talk) 15:03, 31 January 2016 (UTC)

Thanks for trying to help. The first one Ildefonso Simões Lopes (Q10301036) is a different person. pt:Luiz Ildefonso Simões Lopes is the right person. Would a wikidata entry be deleted automatically if the wikipedia page was deleted?  – The preceding unsigned comment was added by 5.62.12.166 (talk • contribs) at 15:14, 31 January 2016‎ (UTC).

Depends on the notability status. Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 17:13, 31 January 2016 (UTC)
It will not be deleted automatically, but if it lacks notability at any Wikipedia, it probably isn’t notable at Wikidata as well. Cf. Wikidata:Notability for details. —MisterSynergy (talk) 17:17, 31 January 2016 (UTC)
here, I would disagree. You could have enough info for a wikidata item, without having enough for an article on wp. And some wp are very hard on stubs :/ --Hsarrazin (talk) 17:38, 31 January 2016 (UTC)
Would be great if we could find the item that was deleted, so we can see what statements it contained. Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 08:33, 1 February 2016 (UTC)
I managed to find Q21803286, I don't see a link to the Portuguese page in the history though, so I don't know if it was just never linked or if there was another item. - Nikki (talk) 15:56, 1 February 2016 (UTC)

Examples of Wikidata in use

I'm looking for examples of data from Wikidata in use, to include in some upcoming talks. Ideally, they will be "real world" uses, but demonstrators will also help. We don't seem to have a page listing such things (or have I missed it?).

So far, I have:

Can anyone suggest others, or point to an existing list, please? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 17:00, 31 January 2016 (UTC)

I would suggest the beautiful Crotos project, that I often point out to show what's possible :) --Hsarrazin (talk) 17:20, 31 January 2016 (UTC)
@Pigsonthewing: Module:Cycling race, that is able to work on 14 Wikipedias, and that permit to display a table for stages and another for the palmares of a race, it is the fruit of a collaboration between the user Molarus for the code and me for tests and contacting users. A common infobox is currently in development, and we have start a common documentation that will can be translated by users. It works, I can get you more examples if you want. Jérémy-Günther-Heinz Jähnick (talk) 17:29, 31 January 2016 (UTC)

Thanks, all. How could I forget Histropedia! I've made a page at Wikidata:Examples, but please keep them coming. J-G-H, examples of that module in use would be good, please. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 18:20, 31 January 2016 (UTC)

  • For example, the infobox in fr:Tour de France 2015 uses fr:Module:Infobox/Descriptif course cycliste a Lua module, written by fr:Utilisateur:Zolo.
  • But Wikidata is used most of the time in infoboxes which are build with templates. This is the job of Module Wikidata (see Q12069631 which Wiki has this module).
  • A good example of Module:Cycling race is maybe the table "Palmarès" in fr:Tour de Norvège (2011) and another table in mk:Тур Даун Андер 2016 and ja:ツール・ド・フランス2016. For the infobox we will have to work some weeks, but you can already take some screenshots. Our infobox will have new features, you have never seen before.
  • About SPARQL: I don´t know if this is an examples of Wikidata in use. I used the SPARQL-Endpoint in a javascript tool (User:Molarus/SPARQL-Endpoint-01.js) to find Wikipedia articles about lakes in DE, CH and AT where I read data from infoboxes which I moved to Wikidata. I did this for the property P2044 (elevation above sea level). Maybe a similar task is possible with the tool autolist 2 from User:Magnus Manske. I have never done that, ask him if you want to know.
  • Another use of SPARQL could you see at Property_talk:P625. There are two SPARQL queries at "Lists": The first query lists globe parameters and the second query lists items with a wrong globe parameter. --> SPARQL is used for maintenance work within Wikidata.
  • A nice example is maybe [1], but I don´t speak french.

Suggestion I would recommend making a page like Wikidata:Applications that list these. —Justin (koavf)TCM 04:25, 1 February 2016 (UTC)

Dispute resolution re legislatures

On pages about cities in the Philippines, such as Naga (Q316197), I removed legislative body (P194) -> city council of a Philippines city (Q7417960) because city council of a Philippines city (Q7417960) is the type of legislature and not the name of each city's legislature proper. The property restrictions on legislative body (P194) says that it usually has a unique value, suggesting that it was intended to link to classes of legislature. Adding area in square km to an item

Is it possible to add a value for an area in square km to an item? I would like to do it for some protected areas in the UK. I'm not sure if I just can't find the right Q number or its not available (or Im doing something wrong)

Properties for museum collections?

Hi,

I'm looking for properties that links to museum collections (ID's). I wonder how many such properties we have on Wikidata, what is the easiest way to find them all? Searching "Museum" gave some results, but maybe there are more. --Stryn (talk) 18:19, 2 February 2016 (UTC)

And an additional question: If a museum has ID's for every items that are in their collections, and those have a separate page on their website (where they can tell a little bit about items), does it make sense to add those ID's to Wikidata? --Stryn (talk) 18:38, 2 February 2016 (UTC)

While "related properties" tool is broken, you could use this sparql query. This query also returns generic properties, but identifier properties are clearly distinguishable. And yes, it makes sense to add these identifiers to Wikidata. --Lockal (talk) 18:47, 2 February 2016 (UTC)
@Stryn: The properties should all be in this list. We generally use inventory number (P217) and described at URL (P973) on works, not need to have a dedicated property explosion. Multichill (talk) 22:26, 2 February 2016 (UTC)
Thank you both. I see we don't have any properties for "game museums". Maybe Videogame History Museum's Online Videogame Database could be proposed. --Stryn (talk) 16:00, 3 February 2016 (UTC)

last call for feedback on showcase item process

High-quality content and showcases are important for Wikidata. The showcase item process hasn't really worked though. A while ago Harmonia Amanda and Sjoerddebruin have been working on improving it. Wikidata w/ external Wikiba.se projects?

Hello all -- I was wondering if anyone had any experience with incorporating Wikidata with other Wikiba.se projects or could point to successful integrations. Several research projects I'm affiliated with would benefit from the Wiki-style databases, which makes Wikiba.se a logical platform, but also connecting with the data and especially the property types, unit types, of Wikidata. Obviously, if everything in the project were Wikidata-compatible statements then the obvious choice would be simply to contribute to Wikidata, but some of the database information would include expert opinions, not facts, and links to copyrighted/non-free images and music files. So a system that could store its own data but link to and query (and potentially contribute back to) Wikidata would be the ideal. Has anything of this sort been done? Best, Mscuthbert (talk) 19:07, 3 February 2016 (UTC)

While this isn't possible yet, we definitely want something like that in the future. Wikidata should serve as a central place to provide identifiers for real-world objects. Especially for Wikimedia Commons we will need that feature if that wiki also becomes a data repository. One issue that isn't solved yet is how to propagate updates made within Wikidata to other clients that don't have direct database access. Best regards -- Bene* talk 08:09, 4 February 2016 (UTC)

upcoming deployments/features

Hey folks :)

I just sat down with Katie to plan the next important feature deployments that are coming up this month. Here is the plan:

  • new datatype for mathematical expressions: We'll get it live on test.wikidata.org tomorrow and then bring it to wikidata.org on the 9th
  • Article Placeholder: We'll get it to test.wikipedia.org on the 9th
  • new datatype for identifiers: we'll bring it to wikidata.org on the 16th. We'll convert existing properties according to the list on User:Addshore/Identifiers in two rounds on 17th and 18th.
  • In Other Projects Sidebar: We'll enable it by default on 16th for all projects that do not opt-out on phabricator:T103102.
  • interwiki links via Wikidata for Wikiversity: We'll enable phase 1 on Wikiversity on the 23rd.

Lydia, is there some place to interact with the developers working on the identifiers? I really don't know how to judge whether proposed properties meet the criteria or not right now. Also as Andy indicates, it would be REALLY helpful to have a lot more eyes looking at the lists that have been generated! ArthurPSmith (talk) 20:10, 1 February 2016 (UTC)
Feel free to ask questions here. I'm reading it and will answer them as best as I can. Would it help to introduce some way to mark the things someone already went through as checked? --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 20:14, 1 February 2016 (UTC)
I guess, beyond being a string datatype, what are the key criteria for an "identifier"? Does given name (P735) qualify (I assume not) but if not why not? I was left very confused after the discussion on Addshore's talk page. ArthurPSmith (talk) 22:08, 1 February 2016 (UTC)
For me the criteria is something like "it helps us look up the same concept in some other database/website/etc". I'd say given name does not qualify. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 08:43, 2 February 2016 (UTC)
I think of identifiers as something which (more or less) uniquely identifies something. A given name does not belong to a particular person, it can be used by anyone anywhere (as long as it's allowed by local naming laws). That approach also implies to me that an identifier has some website or organisation behind it which either assigns the identifier itself (e.g. Wikidata assigns an ID to an item on creation) or decides whether an identifier chosen by a user is acceptable (e.g. a user picks a username on a site and it does not allow them to choose one which is already in use). - Nikki (talk) 10:02, 2 February 2016 (UTC)
Hi all! Per request by 2 people I have created User:Addshore/Strings which contains all properties that are of string type that are not currently listed on the Identifiers pages in my user page! Enjoy! ·addshore· talk to me! 11:14, 2 February 2016 (UTC)
Will there be a possibility to later change the datatype of either properties we forgot to list or revert properties back to string if we figure out that the identifier type was not correct? --Srittau (talk) 12:44, 2 February 2016 (UTC)
We can convert more later. Though I'd prefer to keep the disruption minimal to 3rd parties and rather do as many as we can in one round. From identifier back to string I am not sure but I will ask. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 12:49, 2 February 2016 (UTC)
What should we do if we think something which has been added to the list of identifiers is not actually an identifier? - Nikki (talk) 13:15, 2 February 2016 (UTC)
Would it work for you to move it to a "disputed" section? --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 13:17, 2 February 2016 (UTC)
Maybe adding a short note about why it meets or doesn't meet the criteria mentioned on the talk page would help.
--- Jura 14:03, 2 February 2016 (UTC)
I object to any properties in this list being converted. Probably only properties which are instance of Wikidata property for an identifier (Q19847637) or subclasses should be converted. All other properties should be looked at before thinking about converting. Multichill (talk) 22:49, 2 February 2016 (UTC)
Please join the discussion on the talk page about the criteria to be used. Merely objecting isn't going to help.
--- Jura 22:52, 2 February 2016 (UTC)
I have now added sections to the pages so that we can sort identifiers into them more easily. I'll start with doing some for the first page now. I hope this helps. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 11:22, 3 February 2016 (UTC)
Could you also complete the list of characteristics? Not much use to attempt to sort if we don't agree on those.
--- Jura 11:27, 3 February 2016 (UTC)
The list is good from my side. Let's move the things we intuitively agree on and then see what's left? --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 11:31, 3 February 2016 (UTC)
I think if we're going to sort through the lists again to pick out things which we think are definitely identifiers, it should be done based on objective criteria. Deciding intuitively is how the current lists were created, so doing the same thing again would be silly. The current characteristics list doesn't help either as it's currently written because "is a string" is the only thing which is not optional (also, some of the examples are things Multichill already objected to). I would suggest that strings which are unique values created by a single issuer (following a consistent pattern) and assigned to a single thing can definitely be considered identifiers, if people agree, we could move all of those to the "good to convert" section and then look at the ones which are left. - Nikki (talk) 16:38, 3 February 2016 (UTC)
I agree with Nikki, the criteria currently listed are not useful as they boil down to only "it is a string", which makes the distinction between string and identifier properties worthless. I don't know where "license plate number" came up as an example of an identifier, but I believe it should NOT be considered, for the same reasons Multichill gives. ArthurPSmith (talk) 16:59, 3 February 2016 (UTC)
FYI I converted many of the 'may' criteria to 'must's in the list on User:Addshore/Identifiers based on Nikki's summary statement above. ArthurPSmith (talk) 17:05, 3 February 2016 (UTC)
Could you just annotate them with the reference you have for your criteria?
--- Jura 17:10, 3 February 2016 (UTC)
The reference is this discussion. I have annotated. ArthurPSmith (talk) 18:31, 3 February 2016 (UTC)
Not sure if Nikki meant to say that ISBN is not an external identifier. Anyways, I referenced earlier discussions on commented on your criteria.
--- Jura 04:31, 4 February 2016 (UTC)
I think it's a good idea to state the criteria. I added a few samples to the characteristics. Please add more.
--- Jura 11:52, 3 February 2016 (UTC)
  • Maybe a question to ask for the definition of external identifiers is if we should bear in mind only wikidata.org or possible installations outside Wikimedia. Currently some seem to be focusing on identifiers such as VIAF which are of global interest. For a local installation of Wikibase covering, e.g. only the United Kingdom, MNC (e.g.) might simply be mapped to a uk domain. If we exclude these from external identifiers, the features associated with external identifiers can't be used on such sites.
    --- Jura 05:29, 4 February 2016 (UTC)
    • Wikidata.org decides for itself what external identifiers are. Local installations have their own properties and their own property definitions. We are switching some of our properties to another datatype. Local installations can use different datatypes for properties we use, for instance, they might store the IMDb id as a URL in a URL datatype property. I don't think it's hardcoded that any installation of Wikidata must have VIAF id as an identifier datatype property (if we decide for it to be a indentifier datatype property). Mbch331 (talk) 13:23, 4 February 2016 (UTC)
      • The idea is that they would supplement their information with a subset of Wikidata.org data. Obviously, if the installation is empty, anything can be done, but I doubt you could import Wikidata.org data into properties with another datatype.
        --- Jura 21:46, 4 February 2016 (UTC)

Linking OSM and Wikidata for World Heritage, Man and the Biosphere and Global Geopark items

Hi all

I work at UNESCO as their Wikimedian in Residence, I'm currently importing data about UNESCO inscriptions (e.g World Heritage Sites) to Wikidata through Mix n' Match. I would very much like to create a link between Wikidata and OpenStreetMap for each of the physical place inscription programmes (World Heritage, Man and the Biosphere and Global Geoparks). Here is a plan of how I think this could be done, I would very much like some feedback on the possible approach and if anyone would be interested in joining in please let me know.

  1. Import all World Heritage, Man and the Biosphere and Global Geoparks items into Wikidata, currently only the World Heritage Sites are complete but the other sites are being imported soon.
  2. Create a page to organise the importing, we can create a section on https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiProject_UNESCO
  3. Create lists for showing which of the sites for each programme do not have the link to OSM. For instance here are all the World Heritage sites with no OpenStreetMap Relation identifier This will act as a work list to know what work has and hasn't been done.
  4. Propose identifiers on OSM for Man and the Biosphere sites and Global Geoparks in the same vein as World Heritage Sites https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:heritage
  5. Find all the existing OSM objects for the sites and add the identifier and link them to Wikidata.
  6. Create any new objects that don't currently exist on OSM, add the key identifiers and add the identifiers to Wikidata.

I hope that we could involve people from both the Wikidata and OSM communities (I assume there is some overlap anyway) and encourage more people interested in Wikidata to learn about and contribute to OSM and vice versa.

I've also posted this message on the OSM forum (currently waiting for moderator approval, will update with link)

Thanks

How does Wikidata handle dates for when items were inscribed onto official lists

Hi

Is there a way of adding an inscription date for when items were added to lists? E.g a year for when a place became a World Heritage site.

Thanks

John Cummings (talk) 11:22, 5 February 2016 (UTC)

You can use point in time (P585) as a qualifier. Mbch331 (talk) 12:23, 5 February 2016 (UTC)
Thanks @Mbch331: :) I guess the other option is use start time (P580)? John Cummings (talk) 12:27, 5 February 2016 (UTC)
That depends if an item can lose it's status as a World Heritage site. If it can lose the status, then P580 is the best option, if it's expected never to lose the status than P585 is a better option. As P580 implies that one day end time (P582) will follow. Mbch331 (talk) 12:33, 5 February 2016 (UTC)
I don't think I agree with that statement. Point in time qualifier indicates that it was a heritage site for a single year, which is incorrect. See statement of domain on the talk page: "Anything that was confined to a specific time, but not a range of time". --Izno (talk) 12:45, 5 February 2016 (UTC)
@Mbch331: Yes sites can be delisted e.g Dresden, so it would need to be for a time range rather than a specific year. Does this mean start time (P580) and where needed end time (P582) should be used? John Cummings (talk) 15:13, 5 February 2016 (UTC)
Yes indeed. P580 and P582 are the properties to use. Mbch331 (talk) 17:12, 5 February 2016 (UTC)

Skin color property

Is there a skin color property in Wikidata to be assigned to instances of human (Q5)? --Jobu0101 (talk) 22:04, 30 January 2016 (UTC)

I hope such properties will never exist. --Succu (talk) 22:21, 30 January 2016 (UTC)
Why is that? By that logic properties for genders should not exist either. --Flukas (talk) 02:46, 31 January 2016 (UTC)
well, apart from rare cases (statistically speaking), gender is pretty objective ;)
skin color is not… and is certainly not a good way of classifying humans - it may change a lot in time (just getting sun-tanned may get you darker than many people considered as colored) and is racially prejudiced.
Race is not and (I hope) will never be a property on wikidata either… --Hsarrazin (talk) 09:49, 31 January 2016 (UTC)
As long as sex or gender (P21), sexual orientation (P91), ethnic group (P172) and religion or worldview (P140) properties exist, skin color property can be defined as well with the same restrictions. i.e. "reliable sources are required". Different cultures may have different opinions, but from database point of view it is just another property that can be obtained from reliable sources. But currently there is no such distinguish property. -- Vlsergey (talk) 09:50, 31 January 2016 (UTC)
Right some cultures are not really in line with what Wikipedia stands for. This is not a platform for a culture and having 'skin colour' is not excused by some culture, at most it is an excuse when it is YOUR culture. Thanks, GerardM (talk) 10:09, 31 January 2016 (UTC)
Would yo mind to move aside personal offensive and point out where exactly Wikidata rules or ideas prohibit any kind of property basing on European (ssuming) culture? Let me also remind you, that linking to image of any person is also prohibited by some cultures. Pointing out person ethnic group (P172) is also indecent in some cultures. Wikidata is not culture oriented in rules. Of course, in Wikidata (as long as i can see) rules in not everything. Too many solutions are made basing on personal or voting basis (and this is very sad). And because of that such rule will not exists in next few years (and this may be good IMHO). But not because of rules, but because of voting by Wikidata members. -- Vlsergey (talk) 10:23, 31 January 2016 (UTC)

@Succu: Such properties do already exists. See for example eye color (P1340) and hair color (P1884). In particular the latter one can also change. But that's no problem, we've got quantifiers which can tell a point in time or a timespan. --Jobu0101 (talk) 10:47, 31 January 2016 (UTC)

I think all information which can easily put into a database and is mentioned in Wikipedia should be (as a longtime goal) also represented in Wikidata. Skin color is such an information. Read for example the second sentence in the article en:Halle Berry:

She won an Academy Award for Best Actress in 2002 for her performance in the romantic drama Monster's Ball (2001), which made her the only woman of color to win a Best Actress Academy Award to date, as of 2016.

This sentence talks definitely about her skin color. So that's a relevant topic in Wikipedia and so should also be in Wikidata. --Jobu0101 (talk) 10:53, 31 January 2016 (UTC)

this sentence does not speak about her skin color, it is a polite way of telling she has african ancestors, therefore it's not a matter of color, but a racial identification :/
ethnic group (P172) is a controversial property, and I do not use it, myself…
instead of physically describing a person, putting a picture seems much better to me :) --Hsarrazin (talk) 10:58, 31 January 2016 (UTC)
PS : I think the only "objective" way to give skin color (without racial prejudice) would be to use a colour chart, which would not use words... but the variability of skin colour through the same year, just by sun action (and poor quality pictures) is too big to allow that ;) --Hsarrazin (talk) 11:02, 31 January 2016 (UTC)

@Hsarrazin: You're right. I was acutally not looking for a skin color property (you still might discuss this here and create it if you want). I was looking for a race property to which values like white, black, hispanic and so on are assigned. When you look at ethnic group (P172) you see that people assign countries there instead. --Jobu0101 (talk) 11:22, 31 January 2016 (UTC)

All that discussion is bullshit unless someone can propose an official and sourced system describing skin color or races. All other properties are well accepted because they are issued from offical identification systems provided by governements. Without that kind of caution any property will be a source of problem because everyone will do according to his point of view. Instead of losing time with that discussion start to find if you can source this kind of affirmation for a large number of humans having an element on WD. Just having a property for a small part of a elements class is useless from database point of view. Snipre (talk) 15:14, 31 January 2016 (UTC)
ethnic group (P172) is the best property to indicate a race, that gives a skin colour. Jérémy-Günther-Heinz Jähnick (talk) 16:22, 31 January 2016 (UTC)
Snipre I agree with you. Physical description on subjective and changing criteria is absurd :)
and racial description is prejudiced, since race is not scientifically proven. It's only been used to support discriminant policy.
as for ethnic group (P172) it is very controversed, being used to differentiate people from the same country on supposed different origins to justify battles that were based on language and/or culture... :( --Hsarrazin (talk) 16:42, 31 January 2016 (UTC)

Hoi, many people in India are much darker than many people in or from Africa. The notion that colour has anything to say with race is a fallacy. Thanks, GerardM (talk) 18:34, 31 January 2016 (UTC)

Not sure that skin color property is useful for real people. Many people change skin tint each half year because of sun exposure. However it could be useful for paintings. That's another example, when color of skin has nothing to say with race. --Lockal (talk) 21:11, 5 February 2016 (UTC)

Use color (P462) qualified by applies to part (P518) = skin (Q1074). --Succu (talk) 21:42, 5 February 2016 (UTC)

Accents

I'm working on the KasparBot project to migrate Persondata to Wikidata, and I have a question about aliases. Should I migrate aliases that are the same as the title, but without accents?

For example, this challenge on Lukáš Cikánek: should I add the alias "Lukas Cikanek"?

StephenWade (talk) 18:52, 4 February 2016 (UTC)

I usually will if the accentless version is mostly aliasing a good chunk of accents and those accents are in the first name. Lukas Cikanek is a good one to alias without accents. However, a Gregory Proporvi`tch isn't IMO because autocomplete will take care of getting you to the right one. Just my thoughts; I'm not sure we have any guidelines on the point. Help:Aliases says it's fine to do so either way, I think. --Izno (talk) 21:41, 4 February 2016 (UTC)
I usually accept the version without diacritics. Bowever, I would like it better, if the tool would ignore or separate those (like "aliases, only differing in the absence diacritics" and "aliases, rest". It's a bit tedious to accept hundreds of thousands of those manually (and, given the natute of the tool, compared to e.g. The Game, which preloads the nexts items while editing, ar a comparatively low pace), while that particular aspect of the task could be done much easier by a bit. If we want diacritic-free aliases for people's names (and other things) in English, a bot could create them automatically and for all at once, not just the small subset of them where enwiki persondata happen to have such a version). Similar cases are aliases that just are the surname of somone, and Asian names in the form forename surname where the natural form is the other way round. (Pinging User:T.seppelt, whom I'd like to thank for his efforts, by the way). --YMS (talk) 16:08, 6 February 2016 (UTC)
There's a ticket for ignoring accents at phab:T121863. - Nikki (talk) 19:11, 6 February 2016 (UTC)
That only helps if you type the beginning of the name manually. It doesn't help if you search for something by pasting the name (something I do a lot). It probably doesn't help many external tools/bots since they're likely to search for the whole name too. - Nikki (talk) 19:11, 6 February 2016 (UTC)
Help:Aliases says to add unaccented versions, so I don't see why not. They can always be removed later if the search is improved and we decide we don't want them any more. - Nikki (talk) 19:11, 6 February 2016 (UTC)

I could add all aliases from the persondata data set which are just accent-free versions of already existing labels or aliases automatically using my bot. What do you think about it?--T.seppelt (talk) 19:16, 6 February 2016 (UTC)

How do I indicate that someone gave a lecture

There are named lectures that are given as a celebration or an award. How best to indicate that someone presented such a lecture? Thanks, GerardM (talk) 10:55, 6 February 2016 (UTC)

For the numbers of works that I have reproduced for Wikisource, I I have used "public address" as the instance, and then used the property "speaker" for the person. Other components added have been a "point in time" as a qualifier for instance, added a location, and if part of series of lectures linked to that. As I am working on the published version, that gets linked as through "editions(s). I will try and find a reasonable example.  — billinghurst sDrewth 22:39, 6 February 2016 (UTC)

Promoting in results list for instance of (P31)?

When adding instance and typing the full word "edition" version, edition or translation (Q3331189) this identifier is not appearing in either the top 5, or the top 10. There are a lot results appearing that are never likely to be instances, and are fuller words. What can be done to promote this property in the results list?  — billinghurst sDrewth 22:35, 6 February 2016 (UTC) (UTC)

A bot should go over it and only work on items that had 1 sitelink:
  1. If the linked category was deleted -> nominate for deletion
  2. If the linked category was moved to another item -> merge with the other item
  3. If the linked category doesn't have a wikidata item -> restore the sitelink
That should clean it out. Multichill (talk) 17:50, 7 February 2016 (UTC)

Tool for finding duplicates among disambiguation pages?

Is there a tool that can identify duplicates among disambiguation pages Wikimedia disambiguation page (Q4167410)? I have a feeling that there might be a lot of duplicates. //Mippzon (talk) 12:43, 7 February 2016 (UTC)

@Mippzon: You could define, what is duplicate in your case. Sitelinks/labels? I think there would also be a lot (too much) of false positives, but you can try, of course :) Pasleim most probably can generate a list for you. --Edgars2007 (talk) 17:36, 7 February 2016 (UTC)
@Edgars2007: Sorry, I was probably a bit vague in my question :) What I mean is if there is a tool or similar for finding items that could be merged with each other when it comes to Wikimedia disambiguation page (Q4167410)? When running Duplicity for items on svwiki (which currently includes a lot of disambiguation items not linked to Wikidata) it often found multiple disambiguation items in the search results. I could then merge them and add the svwiki item to the merged one. I guess this is not the best way of finding those problems though :) //Mippzon (talk) 18:22, 7 February 2016 (UTC)
This could be a good start: tinyurl.com/jx44fgr. Matěj Suchánek (talk) 19:52, 7 February 2016 (UTC)
Please be cautious while merging, as often there is a situation, when in one item disambiguation and non-disambiguation links are mixed. In this case merging another disambiguation item will cause even more mess. --Jklamo (talk) 00:16, 8 February 2016 (UTC)

Property for applicable dates

Let's consider the following data for «heritors»:

What properties shall be used to store such dates? -- VlSergey (трёп) 09:59, 8 February 2016 (UTC)

inception (P571) and dissolved, abolished or demolished date (P576). --Yair rand (talk) 10:16, 8 February 2016 (UTC)
@Yair rand: those properties is not a good choice. It is questionable whether inception (P571) can be used to store such information (because infobox of Russia (Q159) displays not 1991 year but 862 year (and it does make sense). Also use of dissolved, abolished or demolished date (P576) for Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (Q2184) would be incorrect. It was not dissolved nether abolished, it was renamed to Russia (Q159). -- VlSergey (трёп) 10:50, 8 February 2016 (UTC)
P.S.: in practice, i would agree with any kind of solution, and personally P571 / P576 sounds good enough for me. But I would like to have consensus on such decision to be able to also put, for example, ,
⟨ Latvia (Q211)      ⟩ inception (P571)   ⟨ 4 May 1990 ⟩
, etc. Please, consider such complex example:
i.e. please notice that we have 2 different P571 for Latvia (Q211). -- VlSergey (трёп) 11:10, 8 February 2016 (UTC)
Another solution could be in Q211 (Latvia)
  • P571 (inception) 29 March 1917
  • P571 4 May 1990
  • P156 (followed by) Q192180 (Latvian Soviet Socialist Republic) Qualifier P585 (point of time) July 1940.
And in LSSR:
No, not
⟨ Latvia (Q211)      ⟩ inception (P571)   ⟨ 29 March 1917 ⟩
. It will be
⟨ Latvia (Q211)      ⟩ inception (P571)   ⟨ 18 November 1918 ⟩

Racing/racecar drivers

Hi Wikidata. I'm currently trying to help out with importing data from the Persondata templates in the English Wikipedia via KasparBot. My main area of activity is racing driver articles. I have a couple of questions:

  • I notice that both "racecar driver" and "racing driver" are currently used on Wikidata (a search for "racecar driver" returns 1627 hits; a search for "racing driver" returns 5092 hits). Would it make sense to standardise on one form or the other? (I recognise that American English typically uses "racecar driver" whereas British English typically uses "racing driver").
  • Help:Description identifies the common formula for the description of a person as "[career the person is known for][country]", e.g. "racing driver from Sweden". However the vast majority of racing driver entries I've encountered so far use the form "[country][career]", e.g. "Swedish racing driver" (which is the format typically used within the Persondata templates in English Wikipedia). Is the "[career][country]" format greatly preferred over the "[country][career]" format?

Apologies if these issues have already been discussed, but I couldn't find anything in the chat archives and there doesn't seem to be a motorsport WikiProject. Thanks in advance. DH85868993 (talk) 10:31, 8 February 2016 (UTC)

In my experience, the form "[nationality] [occupation]" is far more common for people than "[occupation] from [country]", despite what Help:Description says. - Nikki (talk) 15:06, 8 February 2016 (UTC)
The description should be enough to disambiguate a named thing and no more. Besides the use of mostly-sentence case and that it should be only as long as necessary, there aren't any real other expectations and the page should probably reflect that... In other words, don't worry about it. --Izno (talk) 16:25, 8 February 2016 (UTC)
There is a "en-gb" description field for British English and an "en-ca" description for Canadians.
--- Jura 18:12, 8 February 2016 (UTC)
OK: (if prompted by KasparBot), I'll replace an existing description of just "racing driver" with "Swedish racing driver" (for example), but I won't bother replacing "Swedish racecar driver" with "Swedish racing driver". Thanks for your help. DH85868993 (talk) 21:03, 8 February 2016 (UTC)

"save" button disabled

Yesterday noticed that any "save" button is disabled (inactive grey color). First I thought of some page protection but I see it's the same for any Q page. Page reload/purge didn't help. Is this some limitation on me or do I need to look for a tech problem on my side (any hind would be appreciated then). --NeoLexx (talk) 18:41, 4 February 2016 (UTC) UA - Chrome 48.0.2564.97 m

@Neolexx: You might want to retry now and if it still doesn't work clear your cache. The problem should be fixed, but due to caching in your browser you might still run into it. - Hoo man (talk) 10:08, 5 February 2016 (UTC)
@Hoo man: I cleared the Chrome completely (More Tools > Clear browsing data) w/o any effect. I also tried from IE11 which I didn't use for browsing at all (only for local script testing) and it is still grey disabled "save" button, say here https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q3371867 Is there anything else I or we need to look at? --5.18.228.61 10:20, 6 February 2016 (UTC)
Did you follow the steps exactly? The save button is only supposed to get blue once something actually changes. If you can still reproduce the problem, can you tell me if you see any JavaScript errors in your browser's error console (accessible probably by pressing F12, but that's browser dependent). You might also want to try appending ?debug=true to the URL and see whether it still happens then. Cheers, Hoo man (talk) 00:26, 7 February 2016 (UTC)
@Hoo man: It started to work again a few hours ago. Thank you, but do you know the exact reason of the glitch like this or at "Save button deactivated?" topic earlier? Clearing the cache of the mainly used browser is a rather big inconvenience (browser history, address prompts etc.) If there is a particular problem a more narrow fix might be found. --NeoLexx (talk) 04:05, 7 February 2016 (UTC)

Well, we fixed the problem in our JavaScript code, and that worked for most users. I don't know why your cache didn't invalidate on its own, like its supposed to do in such cases. Cheers, Hoo man (talk) 13:51, 9 February 2016 (UTC)

Link the query service more prominently

Hey folks :)

I think it is time to give the query service a bit more exposure. I encounter quite a few people who are still surprised that we have a SPARQL endpoint. It is such a central piece of our puzzle. I had asked here a while ago already but got no replies: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata_talk:Main_Page#Link_to_query_service.3F Please chime in there. Thanks! --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 17:30, 7 February 2016 (UTC)

I added a "start a query" link to property talk pages. Maybe we could put it directly on property pages.
--- Jura 17:42, 7 February 2016 (UTC)
Jura proposed a property for this; currently opposed by one and a comment or two. My inclination is that this should be probably be in Wikibase on the property page. --Izno (talk) 18:17, 7 February 2016 (UTC)
This is something else. Visit a property talk page.
--- Jura 18:20, 7 February 2016 (UTC)
Hmm? No, I think it's exactly the same thing. Lydia is looking to increase the visibility of the SPARQL endpoint, an end also reached by adding it to the property pages. --Izno (talk) 18:23, 7 February 2016 (UTC)
I think it's worth trying one of the "start a query"-links. A new property could store statements with urls of specific queries, while the current "start a query" link on property talk pages is just a generic query using that property. A similar link could be on any property page without actually requiring to be defined in a statement.
--- Jura 18:48, 7 February 2016 (UTC)
Maybe add a more technical section to the user portal, including the query service? Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 18:29, 7 February 2016 (UTC)
  • How about adding some info about/link to the SPARQL query interface on the wikidata advanced search page? ? ArthurPSmith (talk) 14:53, 8 February 2016 (UTC)
    • We could also do that yeah. I was actually thinking about a link in the sidebar. Or a link on the main page. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 19:02, 8 February 2016 (UTC)
      • Sidebar link would be great, I support that! ArthurPSmith (talk) 15:06, 9 February 2016 (UTC)
      • I also support a link in the sidebar. I often see (during events) that even people who already know Wikidata don't know about the Query service and I think such a link would greatly help. Cheers, Hoo man (talk) 15:11, 9 February 2016 (UTC)
      • I'm not sure a plain direct link is such a good idea. There are two goals here: First, that people who know what a query service is, and either know how to use one or could figure out how to use it, and would potentially want to use it, should know about the query service. Second, that a broader audience (who may not know what a query service is) should be generally aware of what Wikidata is capable of with query services. If we make progress on the latter, the former becomes a lot easier. A direct link in the sidebar is seen by everyone, but only communicates effectively to the first group, since the query service page itself doesn't communicate all that much, and the term "Query service" might not be well understood enough by the second group to even merit a click. A link in the sidebar to a more general "Using data" help page that links to the query service communicates substantially more effectively with the second group, but less effectively with the first group, for whom seeing a link titled "Query service" accomplishes a lot by itself. A simple direct link on the main page has the same issues. What would be ideal would be an opportunity to communicate simultaneously: 1, what a query service is, perhaps an example of something it can be used for, and 2, that Wikidata has one. The first thing that comes to mind would be something like a "featured query" (needs better wording) in the "Discover" section of the main page. --Yair rand (talk) 07:32, 10 February 2016 (UTC)

Incorrect birth dates set with tools or by bots

Hi,

there are items of type human with incorrect birth dates presumably often not set by vandals but through the misuse of tools or by (poorly coded?) bots. One reason may be that other dates given in toolboxes of the the respective (en.)wikipedia articles were falsely interpreted as birth dates.

I manually corrected the ones with incorrect 2015 and 2014 birth dates, but as it is likely that there are more items with wrong birth dates there should be a reparsing.

For a start: affected items for 2014 and the responsible editors / tools are:

Import wikidata into elasticsearch

Hello all,

For a personal project, I created a tool allowing to import wikidata into elasticsearch mainly to improve term search.

The project is available on github: https://github.com/pnmougel/wikidata

It is unlikely that I will maintain this project, but if anyone is interested, feel free to clone and fork :)

The developers are also busy with that. See phab:T117520 & phab:T125500. @Smalyshev (WMF), Lydia Pintscher (WMDE), Aude: Can you comment on this? Mbch331 (talk) 11:46, 10 February 2016 (UTC)
We're working on getting more fine-grained data into Elastic, but so far I'm not sure what statement data in Elastic would give us. --Smalyshev (WMF) (talk) 19:08, 10 February 2016 (UTC)
It seems to be considering "only" the labels, description and aliases. The script allows to import all wikidata.

Merging closely related property talk pages

There's a frequently annoying issue that discussions about properties get fragmented across talk pages, and duplicate discussions go on on both a property's talk page and its (bidirectional) inverse's (or "pseudo-inverse"'s) talk page. Would there be any problem with merging the talk pages of start time (P580)/end time (P582), followed by (P156)/follows (P155), inception (P571)/dissolved, abolished or demolished date (P576), student (P802)/student of (P1066), doctoral advisor (P184)/doctoral student (P185), part of (P361)/has part(s) (P527), has subsidiary (P355)/parent organization (P749), capital (P36)/capital of (P1376), parent astronomical body (P397)/child astronomical body (P398), category's main topic (P301)/topic's main category (P910), underlies (P567)/overlies (P568), replaces (P1365)/replaced by (P1366), encodes (P688)/encoded by (P702), and has edition or translation (P747)/edition or translation of (P629)? Would there be any way to do this without breaking the constraints? If not, I suppose it could wait until constraints are moved to statements. Otherwise, does anyone have any objections to merging these? --Yair rand (talk) 12:47, 10 February 2016 (UTC)

That's a good question. @Lydia Pintscher (WMDE), Ivan A. Krestinin:: What would be the impact on the current constraint system (both Krbot and Special:ConstraintReport)? Mbch331 (talk) 13:06, 10 February 2016 (UTC)
Given the constraint and property documentation system I don't think this would be helpful right now. However, rather than merging them completely, the discussions could be manually merged to one of the pair with the other left with a note to add comments only on the first? PASE ID and PASE Name property proposals

Is there any chance of some input on the PASE ID and PASE name property proposals ?

I've spent the best part of the last two weeks on en-wiki, converting and standardising 500 existing links to an easily extractable template, and looking up and adding the relevant links by hand for another 400 more articles -- every non-fictional Anglo-Saxon I could find on the site.

I'd really like to get these onto Wikidata now.

Does nobody really have anything to say about either of these property proposals ? Jheald (talk) 23:39, 10 February 2016 (UTC)

Counting uses of a property

What tool or query can I use to find how many items have a particular property? Is there (or should there be) a FAQ page with such info, and other simply query tips? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 23:13, 20 January 2016 (UTC)

@Pigsonthewing: Tabulated at Wikidata:Database reports/Constraint violations/All properties (though the report is a bit out of date).
The top of the constraint violation report (eg Wikidata:Database reports/Constraint violations/Pxxx for property Pxxx) gives a count which is usually pretty recent.
WDQ and SPARQL can also both produce counts fairly easily, eg if you want to add any specific conditions (eg counts for particular values of a particular property). Jheald (talk) 23:29, 20 January 2016 (UTC)
@Pigsonthewing: On the talk page of every property, the top-right corner of the {{Property documentation}} now displays various links, such as List of instances that shows counts & classes of items using that property. -- LaddΩ chat ;) 00:14, 21 January 2016 (UTC)

Properties awaiting use

You could use Whatlinkshere to find if properties you proposed are still unused, sample(s):
--- Jura 07:14, 25 January 2016 (UTC)
vice-county (P1887) is not a special exceptions. On Wikidata:Database reports/List of properties/all you can list all properties sorted by the number of uses. There are in fact 256 properties which are used less than 3 times. --Pasleim (talk) 09:39, 25 January 2016 (UTC)
  • I had a looking into the various economics properties and had brought this up at Wikidata_talk:WikiProject_Economics#Sample_items.3F. While the same may apply to other properties with datatype quantity, it doesn't explain unused properties with other datatypes: e.g. string and item. I think it would be worth doing some stats on properties created more than a month ago and added to only five items or less:
  1. What is the property datatype?
  2. Who requested them?
  3. Is the requester still active?
  4. Who created them?
  5. Why aren't they being used?
  6. Why have they been requested?
All these properties create overhead and going through the property creation process isn't worth it when they aren't used. If they aren't used, it's not even clear what they may be used for. This may lead to the conclusion that we need to change the property creation process.
--- Jura 10:25, 25 January 2016 (UTC)

Jura is apparently still unhappy that his call to delete vice-county (P1887) garnered no support. Meanwhile this en.Wikipedia essay is pertinent. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 12:21, 31 January 2016 (UTC)

Unused property study

An additional factor to the ones mentioned above might be:

  • 7. How long did it take between the date the proposal was made and the property was created.

Possibly people loose interest when the delay is too long.
--- Jura 07:31, 5 February 2016 (UTC)

To answer the first question:

  • string 145
  • quantity 83
  • wikibase-item 76
  • url 4
  • time 4
  • monolingualtext 2
  • wikibase-property 1

There are also 9 sample/sandbox properties. 46 created less than a month ago.

Hi. It would be possible genres of movies come out as a list on wikipedia infoboxes; It would be better than commas are removed and the items are put on the list, as is done with the language. Thank you.

Is there a property for the governing body or board of directors of an organization? We have legislative body (P194), but that's only for the government of territories. Create property with new datatype mathematical expression

Hi, me and a fellow student helped developing the new datatype for mathematical expressions (see https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikidata/2016-February/008140.html for it's functions). We did this within the scope of a project for the TU Berlin and we are required to collect user feedback for our final report. It would be very helpfull, if you could eighter

  • change the datatype of property P1993 'TeX string' to 'Mathematical expression'

or

within the next days (faster than a week would be great in any case). Otherwise we're not able to include the user reactions in our report.

Is this possible?

Kind regards, Julian

Sorry, but that won't be possible. Change of datatype is not possible, it would require that a new property will be created with the correct datatype, migrate the statements and than delete the old property. However this needs community consensus. Creating new properties also needs community consensus. The week waiting time is so everybody has the time to respond to a property proposal. Mbch331 (talk) 21:12, 11 February 2016 (UTC)
Julian, do you have some more background on the creation of the new datatype? It's interesting it sprang up without having proposed properties to use it (Quantity-with-units datatype for instance had a huge number of proposed properties waiting on that when it finally arrived). Meanwhile everybody please add any supporting or other comments to the Natural science proposal page and possibly also to the related proposals on the Generic page: Wikidata:Property_proposal/Generic#Mathematical_formula and Wikidata:Property_proposal/Generic#product_.2F_sum_.2F_power_.2F_function_application, thanks! Restrict proposed values for some properties

Hello,

When adding a value for a given property, auto-completion propositions include all elements starting by the letters entered. These propositions are often quite far from the property being completed... Would it be possible to limit the propositions in the frame of the elements being having the correct "instance of" property ? For instance, it could be quite practical for languages, which are already called in their limited set when giving a title's language. It could also be used for instance of, gender, nationality...

Of course, it could not cover every property, since some expect unique values (such as title and url). --Canaricolbleu (talk) 13:14, 12 February 2016 (UTC)

Using multiple occurences of the same property in Wikipedia - How to?

I'm sorry if this isn't the right place to ask (and doubly so if the question has already been answered), but on the Norwegian Wikipedia we've been trying to fin a way to solve a problem as exemplified by the Wikidata item Fairphone.

Under "Property 856" (official website) it lists links to several websites/addresses, such as the English, French, Dutch page aso. Now, we'd like these links to appear in a list, either with bullets or comma-delimited, e.g.:

Official website(s):
  • English,
  • French
  • German (aso.)

or

Official website(s) in English, in French, in Dutch (aso.)

Of course, the links would lead to the actual language versions of these home pages.

So far, we haven't been able to come up with a viable solution. Does anyone have code to accomplish this, or is there a help page that explains how to do this. I've searched, but haven't found any guides. Thanks in advance! Asav (talk) 15:03, 12 February 2016 (UTC)

  • Normally when a property can appear multiple times on an item, each appearance should be accompanied by a qualifier, i.e. additional property (or properties) that define the context in which the value is true. In this case you probably want a language qualifier - maybe language of work or name (P407) in this case? Your usage of the data would then need to include querying on the qualifier. -- Editing my response - now I see you have already done this. Not sure what the question is then? ArthurPSmith (talk) 15:58, 12 February 2016 (UTC)
The question is how to publish a number of properties (each with distinct qualifiers in this case) in a list, just like the ones I've posted above. I'm looking for actual template code that works with an "indefinite" number of qualifiers, as there can be several dozens of languages for global corporations, such as Sony, Apple, Microsoft and Phillips, to name just a few. Asav (talk) 17:14, 12 February 2016 (UTC)
The module:Wikidata2 on svwp automaticly prefers claims with qualifier: language:Swedish or writing system:latin when such qualifiers exists. I initially did that to not get "10 km and км" in statements with number datatype, but it should work with such things as websites too. But I do not recommend you to import that module as it is, since it is filled with spaghetti code (Q1047561). I would rather encourage you to find a way to add the same function to a module in your local project. -- Innocent bystander (talk) 09:29, 13 February 2016 (UTC)

@Multichill:, I'd also like to set up a place on here too, maybe called something like 'Data import chat'. I think some people (myself included) prefer the discussion over email rather than on wiki, I find it a lot easier to filter stuff I'm not interested in and also to forward conversations to people I think may be able to help. I assume this is why the Wikimedia public mailing lists exist too. I'm working on some pages 1, 2 for data importing as well that hopefully should kind of work along side the on wiki and mailing list discussions to answer a lot of the basic questions. After some discussion on Phabricator its been agreed that a place on the wiki would be most suitable at the moment which I have created at Wikidata:Partnerships_and_data_imports

"Tag: possible vandalism"

Can I ask why this edit got tagged as possible vandalism? I can't see how in any logical sense it could be accused of being that, since it is essentially just a copy-paste of the definition that English Wikipedia gives for the same concept, albeit with some slight rewording. SJK (talk) 01:11, 13 February 2016 (UTC)

Probably one of the words used in the description. It's just an automatic tagging by the abusefilter, I wouldn't worry about it :) Ajraddatz (talk) 02:02, 13 February 2016 (UTC)
But please note that the description is way too long, it should be short as possible. Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 08:16, 13 February 2016 (UTC)
Yes, "Nazi" is in the badwords filter. Of course there are false positives for this - like for any other badword -, but the alternative would be not to tag an edit as vandalism where e.g. some celebrity would be called a Nazi. I don't know how frequent that particular kind of vandalism is, but is sure is very rude, while the (inappropriate) tag "possible vandalism" is just a tag that has no effect on the item itself. --YMS (talk) 08:39, 13 February 2016 (UTC)
Then again, if I use Wikidata's search function to search for current descriptions (and labels, and aliases, and sitelinks, and whatever it searches for), I'm getting more than 1700 (probably) legit results right now. That's a pretty decent number. I'm going to check this for the other words in the list. As the filter details are not public, I'm not going to give detailed statistics here, but I may end up in removing some badwords that are much more frequently used in a legit way than others. --YMS (talk) 09:43, 13 February 2016 (UTC)
Update: I aborted my search. Searching those manually is tedious, especially as the regex of the abuse filter allows the badword being part of a larger word in many cases. However, while most of them are far less frequent than "Nazi", there are several that are as frequent or even more frequent. So there is no single "This potential badword is used in a legit way far more often than the others on the list" case, and thus I don't think we should remove single ones, as long as we don't want to abandon the whole badword filter. --YMS (talk) 10:31, 13 February 2016 (UTC)
It's worth having. I've exempted autoconfirmed users from the filter as well; previously it was just exempting confirmed users (though this might have hit autoconfirmed as well, I'm not sure). That might cut down on the false positives. Ajraddatz (talk) 19:44, 13 February 2016 (UTC)
@Ajraddatz: I have reverted your change. There should be either 'confirmed', or 'autoconfirmed'. Changing this to '(confirmed|autoconfirmed)' has made this condition obsolete (because in doesn't use regex). I will investigate which one we should use. Matěj Suchánek (talk) 20:56, 13 February 2016 (UTC)
Ah, didn't know that. Thanks for the fix. (looks like I'll need to fix some other filters elsewhere now... :P) Ajraddatz (talk) 03:49, 15 February 2016 (UTC)

Wikidata Property Browser

Hey everyone, it seems we're getting new properties every day. Currently there are over 2000 properties on Wikidata, and for me personally it's becoming a bit difficult to see the forest through the trees. Of course there are a couple of places where they are listed, but they're either a bit unwieldy, broken or not detailed enough.

Anyway, code is better than complaining so i hacked up a tool called Wikidata Propbrowse.

You can filter the list by typing in a couple of characters, see either a detailed or compact list and it's possible to sort the list by different properties (id, label, example, etc.).

This list is updated every night and code is available on Github (here and here).

Let me know if you think is useful and if there's anything you're missing.

Due to changes in data model...

It seems like i missed changes in time data model of Wikidata. Because of change, i would like to ask a couple of questions:

  • There was several thousands dates moved from ruwiki infoboxes to wikidata (i.e. removed from ruwiki infoboxes and pasted in wikidata). They were moved using outdated assumption (according to old datamodel) that dates are stored in Gregorian calendar. Did anyone fixed those dates after model or we have a lot of problems with dates in such entries?
  • Why noone noticed ruwiki about such change? There are a LOT of infoboxes that relies on old datamodel. Nobody cares?
  • Can someone run a bot (since mine one is blocked) to fix those data as soon as templates in ruwiki would be fixed to display dates according to new current datamodel?
  • How can I enter date "29 February 1900" which is correct date in Julian calendar?

-- Vlsergey (talk) 17:31, 10 February 2016 (UTC)

On your last point, "How can I enter date "29 February 1900" which is correct date in Julian calendar?", I don't think you can using the user interface. I suppose some more direct method of making the entry might work. But I've been looking for a direct way to enter dates without success. My motivation was wanting to enter the time zone that corresponds to the date. All the dates in Wikidata say the time zone is Universal time, so all the dates for events not near 0° longitude are wrong. Jc3s5h (talk) 21:15, 10 February 2016 (UTC)
No, direct method (API call) doesn't work neither. It seems like software doesn't know about data model "change", it's only in minds. -- Vlsergey (talk) 23:19, 10 February 2016 (UTC)
@T.seppelt: BTW apparently the API doesn't work either. Your Persondata tool should probably make sure they are penned up and excluded indefinitely.... --Izno (talk) 16:24, 11 February 2016 (UTC)
If there are lot of changes needed like the one discussed on Talk:Q307, there is some need of reviewing them.

There was a lot of additions like discussed on Talk:Q307 in 2014-15 years. Since then data model was "changed", but noone fixed data itself. -- VlSergey (трёп) 07:44, 12 February 2016 (UTC)
phab:T98194 seems to be the ticket for supporting dates like "29 February 1900". - Nikki (talk) 09:47, 12 February 2016 (UTC)
  • @Lydia Pintscher (WMDE): there are several questions above and seems like nobody can answer them. What shall i do now with templates? Shall I adjust them and change to new datamodel OR shall I leave them as they are? -- Vlsergey (talk) 16:24, 14 February 2016 (UTC)
    • I'd say adjust the template. I am still waiting for addshore's bot request to be approved... --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 19:06, 15 February 2016 (UTC)
      • I think it was approved, but I'm not sure if it covers these. For years before 1582, it shouldn't have mattered. However, the sample "Battle of Agincourt" mentioned in w:Gregorian_calendar#Proleptic_Gregorian_calendar had its date at Wikidata either defined or converted incorrectly.
When looking into the question last year, my conclusion was that people aren't interested into fixing this or using development time for it.
        --- Jura 06:40, 16 February 2016 (UTC)
        • I think the problem Jura points out is that in the past, the documentation said dates should always be stored in the Gregorian calendar. So editors would convert pre-1582 dates to Gregorian before adding them to the database. This that essentially all dates before about 1923 are suspect, although if one can take the country where an event took place into consideration, this could be narrowed. Human name disambiguation pages

I am not convinced that it makes much sense to have disambiguation pages dedicated to human names, but Wikipedias haves lots of it, see Category:Human name disambiguation pages (Q4671251). I guess we should use "instance of Wikimedia human name disambiguation page (Q22808320) for them ? It certainly beats this solution. --Zolo (talk) 07:47, 16 February 2016 (UTC)

Support, but be sure that it makes sense for all sitelinks. The solution you've linked hits constraint violations by the way (not uncommon with that user tbh). Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 08:07, 16 February 2016 (UTC)
Does that mean we have to monitor them if they change into Wikimedia disambiguation page (Q4167410)?
--- Jura 08:12, 16 February 2016 (UTC)
I think actually it's worth looking is there is a blocker to the fact we actually use those disambig pages as actual name item sitelinks. This would make things simpler. author  TomT0m / talk page 09:32, 16 February 2016 (UTC)

Wikidata weekly summary #196

New years day -- Region specific

Here's a calendar/date question that's not directly related to Julian/Gregorian calendar differences: many medieval (and earlier and later) calendars begin the new year on dates other than January 1. For instance, the feast of the Annunciation (March 25) was a common place to change the year date. I have lots of documented dates that are merely years. So a medieval source saying 1423 could mean any date from March 25, 1423 to March 24, 1424 (Julian dates). In medieval studies publications we'll usually write that date as 1423/4. Is there any way to record this without saying "between March 25, 1423 and March 24, 1424"? A difficulty there comes that different cities used different dates, so if there's uncertainty about the location of the evidence then all we can say is "1423/4". Thanks. Cross-wiki notifications available as a Beta feature on Wikidata by February 19th

Dear Wikidata community

Collaboration team is please to announce that Cross-wiki notifications will be available as a Beta feature on your wiki by February 19th at 01h00 UTC.

Cross-wiki notifications will help you know about some activity on another wiki. How does it work? Imagine someone thanks you on Commons - the next time you open a page on Wikidata, you'll see that notification from Commons! We hope this will help everyone who is active on multiple wikis. You will find more information in the documentation.

Of course, this is a Beta Feature. We have tested many possible cases, but you may experience some problems. If so (and we are sorry about that), please report it on the dedicated page (in any language).

To activate the feature, go to your preferences, Beta tab, and select the "Enhanced notifications" checkbox. You will then receive Notifications on Wikidata when they happen on any other wiki. You will receive these notifications only on Wikidata or any wiki where you have activated the feature (Beta testers: Wikidata, MediaWiki, Commons, all Hebrew and French wikis). If you do not activate it, nothing will change on your Notifications panel.

If you have any questions, please mention me!

All the best, Trizek (WMF) (talk) 17:48, 16 February 2016 (UTC)

WikiProject Religions RFC

I've just bootstraped the "Religions" project but I'm quite new to wikidata and I would want to be sure that my plans are OK before raising havoc across the database on that delicate matter.

Can anyone have a quick look at the page and tell me if the ontology is consistent? Any help would also be appreciated, of course.

Instance of twin

I thought we only apply Q5 to humans. What do you think about those 1596 twins? Is that okay? --Jobu0101 (talk) 13:43, 11 February 2016 (UTC)

The English description of twin (Q159979) explicitly mentions it to use it with P31 on individual twins. Mbch331 (talk) 19:11, 11 February 2016 (UTC)
@Mbch331: Then it should be changed.
@Jobu0101: No, it's not okay. They should only have Q5. These statements must be removed. — Ayack (talk) 10:35, 12 February 2016 (UTC)
I don't mind the change, I didn't add the text to the description. It was added in 2013 with this edit. As I can see, this item was explicitly created to show someone is one half of twins. So if we remove it from instance of (P31), where do we store it then? If we don't it's loss of data. Mbch331 (talk) 11:11, 12 February 2016 (UTC)
@Ayack: They should only have Q5 => Why ?
@Mbch331: We may need to items, one for a twin pair, subclass of human group (human pair), one for the class of humans who are members of a twin part.
Then we might have
⟨ twin 1 ⟩ part of (P361)   ⟨ our twin pair ⟩
,
⟨ twin 2 ⟩ part of (P361)   ⟨ our twin pair ⟩
,
⟨ our twin pair ⟩ instance of (P31)   ⟨ twin pair ⟩
and
⟨ twin 1 ⟩ instance of (P31)   ⟨ human who have a twin ⟩
. The corresponding constraints/sparql query should not be hard to write. WikiProject Reasoning might also be interesting by the usecase. author  TomT0m / talk page 12:57, 12 February 2016 (UTC)
The current structure is outlined at Wikidata:WikiProject Identical Twins. All humans should be a direct instance of Q5.

SPARQL query broken in fetching values?

I've been trying to track down a problem I've been seeing in wikidata SPARQL queries not returning consistent results and narrowed it down to one very specific example (half-life of uranium-233 (Q2668919)) that illustrates the problem: try tinyurl.com/hdr3jgm. Sometimes I get 1 (correct) result - half-life value = 159200. And sometimes I get TWO results, one with value 159200 and one with value = 0! The two-result response seems to happen at least half the time. What's going on? Something seems to be broken with the query service! ArthurPSmith (talk) 22:00, 16 February 2016 (UTC)

The two results is normal (due to the UNION), the one result is strange. Maybe Smalyshev (WMF) can comment on this? Mbch331 (talk) 22:05, 16 February 2016 (UTC)
No, there should NOT be two results due to the UNION as the first clause is never satisfied for uranium-233 (Q2668919). Only the second clause defines the half life parameters, so returning zero would be wrong there in any case. Here's the same query without the UNION bit or the FILTER (which are unnecessary for this specific nuclide): tinyurl.com/hhbhhmg. Same problem keeps happening - sometimes 2 results, sometimes 1. And the half-life value should never be 0. ArthurPSmith (talk) 22:10, 16 February 2016 (UTC)
Maybe you can get SPARQL to display which one of the two servers responds to the query. One might not have the deletion from February 5.
--- Jura 22:33, 16 February 2016 (UTC)
It is a bug. Or, more precisely, it is consequence of a bug (https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T126671) which was deployed briefly but unfortunately resulted in some data corruption. The symptom is 0 showing up where it shouldn't be. I've cleaned up a lot of it but may have missed some. --Smalyshev (WMF) (talk) 23:00, 16 February 2016 (UTC)
Smalyshev (WMF) - thanks for fixing uranium-233 (Q2668919). However, it's not the only case - I found tritium (Q54389), antimony-108 (Q1829387), tellurium-109 (Q2220738), and iodine-112 (Q1925726) to have the same problem. I'm not sure that's an exhaustive list - is there a plan to fix this problem generally somehow? It's a little disturbing that queries can return such wrong results, although I suppose WDQS is still listed as in beta... ArthurPSmith (talk) 00:45, 17 February 2016 (UTC)
Two more cases where I'm seeing a double response where there should be only one - but both responses are correct so maybe unrelated or maybe related? See same query as above for barium-132 (Q2752861) and zinc-64 (Q2133737). ArthurPSmith (talk) 01:14, 17 February 2016 (UTC)
I've cleaned it up a bit, so now it should be fixed. The duplicate value though is not related (the bug is when one of the values is 0) - it may be because of path resolution semantics. --Smalyshev (WMF) (talk) 06:59, 17 February 2016 (UTC)
Thanks Smalyshev (WMF), looks much better. I think I see where the duplicates are coming from maybe - two instance of (P31) statements that match. Thanks for the help! ArthurPSmith (talk) 15:11, 17 February 2016 (UTC)

List of countries

hi,

I tried to create a list of countries by calling "?country wdt:P31 wd:Q6256" (query link) in the Query Service. However, East Germany (Q16957) and Company rule in India (Q2001966) show up as well – every other item seems to be a country in present time. Should I remove P31:Q6256 from them or am I missing something?

best regards, Ambrosiani (talk) 08:26, 17 February 2016 (UTC)

@Yair rand: Thank you! Ambrosiani (talk) 08:42, 17 February 2016 (UTC)

What about P31 Q3624078? Is this also used for historical countries? --Jobu0101 (talk) 08:50, 17 February 2016 (UTC)

@Jobu0101: Yes. If a statement was true at some point, the statement should be in the database. It doesn't need to be current. Claims that were only true for a certain period of time can be qualified by start time (P580) and end time (P582). --Yair rand (talk) 12:15, 17 February 2016 (UTC)

Property for country represented by an embassy?

We don't seem to have a way of encoding the 'represented country' of an embassy. Our existing examples don't show a clear winner. Presumably country (P17) describes the host country, not the guest country. How about using allegiance (P945) (aka 'country of origin') as the guest country? --Heron (talk) 17:37, 17 February 2016 (UTC)

Toponyms

Many medieval names have toponyms. For instance: Paolo da Firenze (Q514391) implies "of Florence," and Mikołaj Radomski (Q1933821) is "of Radom". Currently, these are being imported as Place of Birth, but that's not necessarily correct: the family presumably had a connection to these cities, but the name is often still used generations later. Is there a Property for toponyms? if not, anyone mind if I create one (or helping me to create one, since it's my first P tag). Best, Mscuthbert (talk) 16:51, 17 February 2016 (UTC)

I think the closest property we have now is named after (P138) - which does have "toponym" as an alternate label. Would that be sufficient for you? Otherwise you should create a proposal under Wikidata:Property_proposal/Person - make sure to have one or two good examples. ArthurPSmith (talk) 17:20, 17 February 2016 (UTC)
Probably should be a new property. The tricky thing is what to do when the toponyms become heritable -- ie when Marco da Firenze inherits the name, despite having been born and bred in Pisa.
There's also the question of what to do with other kinds of byname, eg Thomas the Tailor, Hereward the Wake, etc. Jheald (talk) 01:39, 18 February 2016 (UTC)
What about this : put the "named after" statement to the name itself, not to the person, except if the person is actually the first to get the name after the location name. author  TomT0m / talk page 11:35, 18 February 2016 (UTC)

Wikidata editing counterintuitive or unintuitive, at least not easy or intuitive

Here are some recent examples of problems i've run into, but there have been quite a few others in the past that i can't remember right now.

  • The Wikidata item Q917264 was connected with an article on a completely different topic that happened to have the same name. Trying to remove it produced a strange error message about that kind of behavior being bad. Perhaps i only got that because i didn't realize that i wasn't signed in (and didn't get a warning about, which is also not intuitive to editors used to the opposite experience from Wikipedia), but we don't want to scare off newcomers and unregistered users either. At the very least, a link should be provided that offers to create a new Wikidata item instead of leaving the removed Wikipedia without one.
  • Not being warned about not being signed in was especially weird because i remember having had the opposite problem several times in the past, in other words being signed in but getting a warning when editing in Wikidata that i wasn't signed in. Has something been changed here recently?
Most problems at a particular Wiki* (non-Wikidata) page can be solved with a purge. --Izno (talk) 13:16, 18 February 2016 (UTC)
The third bullet point sounds like phab:T47839. The fourth bullet point sounds like a combination of phab:T47839 and phab:T122693. Could you give an example for the fifth bullet point? I've never seen anything where you have to enter a Wikidata ID. - Nikki (talk) 16:45, 18 February 2016 (UTC)

How to mark a parent taxon "obsolete"?

Hi, I have a question about Q159077. There's three parent families of the single genus. That's because they are from three different systems (APG III, APG and Cronquist). The APG III one is the latest one and should make the previous two deprecated. I want to add qualifier(s) to mark the latest one (or the obsolete ones) but don't know what property and value are proper here. So how will you handle this? Any suggestion? --PhiLiP (talk) 03:49, 17 February 2016 (UTC)

@Succu:.--GZWDer (talk) 07:32, 17 February 2016 (UTC)
All parent taxa are currently in use. E.g. FOC uses Saxifragaceae (Q2543932) (see Comparison of classifications of vascular plants of China (Q22811126)). In An update of the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group classification for the orders and families of flowering plants: APG III (Q13683362) the taxonomic concept of Celastraceae (Q135336) was broadened by the inclusion of Parnassiaceae (Q162149) for practical reasions. A natural classification of Celastraceae s.l. did not exist until now (see e.g. Phylogeny of Celastraceae Subfamilies Cassinoideae and Tripterygioideae Inferred from Morphological Characters and Nuclear and Plastid Loci (Q22811349)). So non parent taxon should be marked as "obsolete" or "deprecated". --Succu (talk) 10:13, 17 February 2016 (UTC)
@Succu: Sorry perhaps I didn't explain clearly. So no, I don't mean to mark these parent taxon "obsolete". I want to make the relationship obsolete. Since according to APG III Parnassia (Q159077) is moved to Celastraceae (Q135336) and is no longer belong to either Parnassiaceae (Q162149) or Saxifragaceae (Q2543932), but historically it was. So I think it's better to keep the references to both Parnassiaceae (Q162149) and Saxifragaceae (Q2543932) in Parnassia (Q159077) rather than just remove them. --PhiLiP (talk) 12:53, 17 February 2016 (UTC)
Read my first sentence as: All parent taxa relationships are currently in use. ;) A lot of publications follow APG III today, but not all. Flora of China (Q5460442) is an example (see Parnassia). BTW: APG I/II/III state nothing about genera and their parent taxa. ---Succu (talk)
Ok. Understandable. At least we can distinguish them by their reference property. --PhiLiP (talk) 13:28, 17 February 2016 (UTC)
Yes, it seems to me that the optimum solution would be an option to set a preference (like APG III) in the software that creates a taxobox. This would allow each Wikipedia to choose a system of classification that they like. - Brya (talk) 17:29, 17 February 2016 (UTC)
Our taxobox supports this. --Succu (talk) 17:43, 17 February 2016 (UTC)
Wow! The module is exactly what I am trying to find! I mean I tried to craft a prototype in Chinese Wikipedia yesterday since I found en:Module:Taxobox is lack of maintenance and broken. Now I'd like to help improving this one and introduce the module to zhwp (it seems works very well).;) --PhiLiP (talk) 20:14, 17 February 2016 (UTC)
You have to be careful using the data though, as non-APG relationships have been entered and coded as if they were APG relationships. Sometimes, this results in really bizarre parent offspring connections, such as putting the peristomate mosses inside the horsetails. Also, the relationships in Wikidata are based purely on the names of the taxa, and not on the content of the associated Wikipedia pages. --EncycloPetey (talk) 03:31, 18 February 2016 (UTC)
The relationships that have been entered are those that are in the literature. Not everybody may like what is in the literature, but they should take it up with the authors of the literature, rather that to advocate that Wikidata should violate core content policies. And, yes, relationships are of necessity by names of taxa, except where there is more than one page by that same name for different circumscriptions/classifications (which does happen but is rare). - Brya (talk) 06:12, 18 February 2016 (UTC)
That is incorrect. The literature describes relationships between taxa, but Wikidata deals exclusively with names. The relationships that have been entered here assume that the names are uniformly applied in the literature, which is certainly not the case. As a result, a pattern of relationships between names is generated here, rather than a pattern of relationships between taxa, whereas the relationships published in papers are between taxa rather than names. To claim that Wikidata has accurately represented the literature in this regard is to misunderstand the nature of scientific nomenclature. If the authors of the articles saw what Wikidata is claiming that they have published, they would object in the strongest terms.
The net result of this mismatch of information is that Wikidata cannot and should not be used to populate taxoboxes on Wikipedia. The kind of taxonomic information presented here is fundamentally incompatible with what Wikipedia does, which is to have articles on taxa rather than articles on names. Your failure to grasp this important difference was a key reason that you became persona non grata on the English and Dutch Wikipedias, the English and Dutch Wiktionaries, and Wikispecies. --EncycloPetey (talk) 18:14, 18 February 2016 (UTC)
Again you are assaulting Brya on personal grounds, EncycloPetey. „The relationships that have been entered here assume that the names are uniformly applied in the literature“: Are you refering to parent taxon (P171) relationship or the circumscription of a taxon? Both (= taxon concept) can vary over time. „The kind of taxonomic information presented here is fundamentally incompatible with what Wikipedia does, which is to have articles on taxa rather than articles on names.“ I assume with names you are refering to taxon name (P225) based on nomenclatural rules? But what's your understanding of taxa? According to my experience most Wikipedias don't provide the authorship and the publication in which the name was established. But any propsals to resolve this ambiguity on a larger scale than that at the level of private animosities are welcome. --Succu (talk) 23:23, 18 February 2016 (UTC)
If you believe that I am "again ... assaulting Brya on personal grounds" then you need to provide the diffs in the appropriate forum. Not here. If you do not understand what the word taxa (taxon) means, then you should look that information up. My attempts to resolve this issue were met with an edit war and accusations from you, but with no actual discussion of content. Therefore, I have to believe that your offer to consider "propsals [sic] to resolve this ambiguity on a larger scale" is disingenuous. --EncycloPetey (talk) 01:27, 19 February 2016 (UTC)
This is pretty much unanswerable. Just about all communication about taxa happens through names. Scientific names are labels, and it varies from case to case how stable their connection to a taxon is. For example, a higher-order name like Magnoliopsida has been used for so may different taxa that it is almost meaningless for purposes of communication. To say that a name like Equisetopsida refers to the horsetails (see above) is a gross distortion. The generic name Equisetum refers to the horsetails, and Equisetopsida can be used for any group that includes Equisetum. There is nothing, in principle, to prevent it being used for an even more-encompassing group, although in practice that is extremely unlikely to happen. Anyway, the authors of the relevant paper (Q13626292) are quite within their rights to put a subclass Anthocerotidae in a class Equisetopsida; scientifically and nomenclaturally this is flawless. That it proves unpopular among many people is a different matter, but history shows that there have been any number of taxonomies (with attendant naming) which have proven unpopular.
The problem with the enwiki Tree-of-Life Wikiproject is that it purports "to have articles on taxa rather than articles on names." while what actually happens is that it is creating a Tree-of-Life, composed of particular points of view on taxa. This in defiance of all core content policies (these core content policies are fine with pages organized around a name, as long as it is notable enough) and WP:NOT. And like all self-sufficient belief systems this Wikiproject is aggressive (conquers neighbouring territory) and leaves no room for discussion. - Brya (talk) 05:02, 19 February 2016 (UTC)

RC link collection

Hi all. Thanks to Yair rand's underrated DiffLists script, which directly shows the diffs of changes in the Recent Changes lists, I rediscovered the joy of RC. To optimise my own work there, I collected some links at User:YMS/admintools long ago, but I now extended this heavily to User:YMS/RC. There now are maaaany direct links to Special:RecentChanges and related pages, e.g. enabling you to find the 500 latest unpatrolled changes tagged as possible vandalism or the 50 latest changes on non-item pages. Besides these links to possible everyday RC tasks, there are all the links you might need every now and then, e.g. to the noticeboards, to guidelines and policies or to some RC-related reports. Ability for addition of an entity reference required

At the moment, one can have to repeatedly add the same reference where it applies to multiple facts. That is problematic as it is a disincentive to add references where a four or five field reference is needed to be added on multiple occasions, and I have simply stopped adding multiple occasions (takes too long!). If there was the ability to have a reference added as its own entity just the once with the multiple fields added, then each pertinent fact could be referenced to that entity.

So maybe we can do something like create a property "entity reference" (picking a term) that can have its subsidiary components (volume/property/ref url/...) that can be self-referenced within the item by the pertinent property reference fields.  — billinghurst sDrewth 02:53, 20 February 2016 (UTC)

What you are looking for from a solution standpoint (in the interim) is WD:Tools/Gadgets#DuplicateReferences, available at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets. I could not find a task on Phabricator for the problem in general. --Izno (talk) 04:00, 20 February 2016 (UTC)
Thanks. Hadn't seen the gadget and will admit to not having visited gadgets in a while. I still find the duplication of a reference rather lame, rather than the ability to have multiple links to a single (named) reference, so that you know it is a single reference, especially if going to be used at a Wikipedia.  — billinghurst sDrewth 13:35, 20 February 2016 (UTC)

Could someone plese have a look at my recent contribution history (last 10-15 items) and see whether indeed if you click on visibly same item (Q17529794) sometimes you get a church in Dover and sometimes in Canterbury? Query - genealogy sites

Hi all, I’m a long time Wikimedia (mainly enwp) contributor, new Wikidata contributor! I have a few questions regarding a new property but thought I’d get some more general info before proposing one. I can’t see any properties which relate to genealogy/family history sites. Broadly speaking, would such a property be useful? I was going to suggest a site that I use, Geni.com – an example of their profile pages is here: Queen Elizabeth II on Geni They have a “master profile” (MP) designation which is specifically for high profile individuals, and a thorough tree of over 100 million connected individuals. Now, the issues that I can see:

  • Geni is a commercial website, and one of many commercial genealogy sites. Why Geni over any other site?
  • The information in it is crowd sourced. I don’t think this is necessarily a problem – IMDb is the same.
  • I'm unaware if they have an API which can be used for automated imports (e.g. mix'n'match)
  • I don’t think it is possible to generate a list of all "MP" profiles. The 100 most popular profiles are available (note that list is dynamic).

I don't think any of these are deal breakers, but wanted to get people's thoughts? -- Chuq (talk) 00:56, 18 February 2016 (UTC)

FYI: genealogics.org person ID (P1819). Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 06:24, 18 February 2016 (UTC)
Also: Rodovid ID (P1185). --Lockal (talk) 07:34, 18 February 2016 (UTC)
Thanks @Sjoerddebruin: and @Lockal:. So I'm taking one of two messages out of this. The first that we don't need another link to a genealogy site because we already have two. The second is that there is no problem in having references to multiple sites. I'm leaning towards the second? -- Chuq (talk) 10:08, 20 February 2016 (UTC)
The second. They were pointing out that we do indeed have genealogy/family history sites, because you seemed unsure that this was the case (see "I can’t see any properties which relate to genealogy/family history sites"). --Izno (talk) 14:30, 20 February 2016 (UTC)
  • I was going to suggest this too, it is on my list. I also want to link to Familysearch.com, the only problem is there is no landing page if not logged into the free service. One logged in you are linked to actual documents like birth, marriage, and death. Geni does not link to documents, they want an addition for to do that. Here is a familysearch record (if you have a free account and are logged in): https://familysearch.org/tree/#view=ancestor&person=L4HD-T2N  – The preceding unsigned comment was added by Richard_Arthur_Norton_(1958-_) (talk • contribs).

Thanks @Izno: and @Richard_Arthur_Norton_(1958-_):. I've now submitted the proposal - Wikidata:Property_proposal/Person#Geni.com_Profile_ID -- Chuq (talk) 12:03, 22 February 2016 (UTC)

The death of non-famous people

Hello. There are items about The death of non-famous people some of them are named "Death of (The name)" and some of them are named "(The name)".Example:1,2.Can we merge these two items?Thank you --ديفيد عادل وهبة خليل 2 (talk) 07:58, 21 February 2016 (UTC)

Judging from your edits you're talking about Neda Agha-Soltan (Q326474) and Death of Neda Agha-Soltan (Q9035653). One item is about the person, the other about the event. Those are two different concepts and both have plenty of sitelinks. So no, these two items and similar items shouldn't be merged. Multichill (talk) 11:14, 21 February 2016 (UTC)
Yes, quite clear: Events are not persons and vice versa, so they should not share the same item. However, the much more common case is that there are several articles about the person, and one single Wikipedia (usually enwiki) decided to have the article about the event (death of..., murder of..., ... case, etc.). There it is hard to explain this way of separating subjects to someone who is just interested in interwiki links. Wikidata should properly support redirect sitelinks, imho. --YMS (talk) 12:52, 22 February 2016 (UTC)

New discussion board for partnerships and data imports

Hi all

As some of you may have noticed I've created a new Partnerships and imports discussion page for discussion of partnerships with external organisation and organising data imports from external databases. I did this in conjunction with Jens and Lydia from WMDE, I hope its useful. In addition I'm working on pages for providing information for potential partners and a step by step guide for importing data from external sources, I'd appreciate any feedback on them (they're still in draft).

Thanks

Rewrite of data donation page

Hi all

I have rewritten the Wikidata data donations page with the aims of:

  • Providing an attractive and professional looking page
  • Taking potential partners through the process of understanding what Wikidata is and what they can do with it without getting stuck on the technical aspects of how Wikidata works
  • Touch on the difficult topic of database copyright without going round in circles.
  • Providing information on other ways to work with the Wikimedia movement.
  • Providing a broad overview with links to more in depth resources on other subjects.
  • Is simple for people to add information to without any difficult tables or other things that may make contributing difficult.
  • Create a framework that will allow people to easily add case studies and other useful information when projects are completed.
  • Linked to the top of the new Wikidata partnerships and imports page

Here are the things that I think are still needed:

  • More examples of case studies
  • More practical examples for reuse of data that are interesting and easy to understand
  • Some attractive images of data visualisations
  • Create translation tags for the page
  • Maybe change the name to Data partnerships

And perhaps some of the information from

We now have quite a lot of experience and resources for GLAM cooperation for media but the resources are spread over various Wikimedia projects including Meta, Outreach and the Wikipedias. Because Wikidata is multilingual and a central place for data I hope that we won't suffer from as much fragmentation.

I am also working on a guide for people who want to learn how to import data from external sources which will kind of be the partner of this page but for the Wikimedians working with the GLAMs

All feedback welcome

Thanks

John Cummings - I think it is greatly improved. However, you've removed the translation tags, and the pages in other languages now have no correspondence to your updated page. Company/location confusion?

en:Philz Coffee is a small chain of coffee shops in San Francisco. The enwiki article has a geocoordinate of the first store (which may also be corporate headquarters- I don't know). Q18156812 picks up the geotag.

I think the right thing to do here is something like:

  1. (obvious) add corporate entity-related properties to the iteam
  2. Remove the geocoordinate, since a company is not a thing that has a place (?)
    1. Question: do we give companies coordinates for their headquarters/main office, if I can find that?
  3. Create a separate item for the store (?) and link it to the parent company somehow (?)

Any thoughts or comments? (Or model chain/store items I can model after?) Thanks! LuisVilla (talk) 15:48, 20 February 2016 (UTC)

  1. Yes.
  2. Yes.
    1. Coordinates of headquarters as qualifier of headquarters property (Property:P159) are welcomed.
  3. Yes, you can add coordinates of the shop to the shop item than. I am not sure, how the link items than (maybe Property:P527?).
It is a common problem that WP article combines shop/factory/building and company/institution. --Jklamo (talk) 16:22, 20 February 2016 (UTC)
Thanks! Looks like I can't give a coordinate as a qualifier of P159? Will let me save with "San Francisco", but not "37.75444°N 122.3898°W". (Possibly I'm misunderstanding, though.) —LuisVilla (talk) 23:16, 21 February 2016 (UTC)

New language

What's the procedure for proposing a new language (for labels and descriptions) be added to Wikidata? The langugae in question has an ISO code and an active community of volunteers willing to work on Wikidata. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 23:28, 21 February 2016 (UTC)

I've been adding all the requests I see to phab:T74126 in an attempt to keep them all in one place, although technically that ticket only mentions monolingual text. I see Adrian created Help:Monolingual text languages but that doesn't mention labels/descriptions so I don't know whether the process is supposed to be different for those but I expect it would be pretty much the same (after all, most of our monolingual text properties are structured and referenceable forms of labels/aliases). @Adrian Heine (WMDE): Can you clarify? Perhaps the help page should cover both and be moved to somewhere like Help:Requesting new languages. - Nikki (talk) 11:22, 22 February 2016 (UTC)
Hi, labels, descriptions and aliases are completely different than monolingual text. Currently, we cannot add new languages to labels, descriptions and aliases. Also, the requirements for both are quite different. For monolingual text, we want to allow everything that's needed to model reality. For labels, descriptions and aliases, we want a set of language codes that describe useful, unique, maintainable languages. I will work on languages for them, but only after mono, and it will take some time. Please continue opening tickets for them, though :) Adrian Heine (WMDE) (talk) 13:02, 22 February 2016 (UTC)
@Adrian Heine (WMDE): You say "Currently, we cannot add new languages to labels, descriptions and aliases" - Why not? When will this change? How is the matter being addressed? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 15:18, 23 February 2016 (UTC)
Huh? We can't? The new languages we added already (e.g. Northern Thai, see phab:T93880) can be used for labels/descriptions/aliases... - Nikki (talk) 18:27, 23 February 2016 (UTC)
I plan to work on languages for terms in the next months. I will have to do some changes to make them configurable in the first place, then I will probably start with removing bad ones, and finally, I'll add requested language codes. @Nikki:, you are right, that is a way to add a language to terms that currently works. I wasn't aware we are doing that. Adrian Heine (WMDE) (talk) 09:00, 24 February 2016 (UTC)

Nearly every video game is multi-platform these days. Because Wikidata is Wikipedia's translation map, we are stuck lumping them all together. Representation issues The Raven (Q22726) — difficulties presented for WSes by current model

I would like to bring some data issues that I believe that Wikidata needs to review and reflect upon with relation to works and editions. I draw your attention to the item for "The Raven" by Poe The Raven (Q22726). The work has its encyclopaedic articles at WPs. The work has its versions (sort of disambiguation) linked to WSes, which is an indication that some wikis have multiple versions of the work, though no indication that some wikis have a edition of the work. The has edition or translation (P747) utilised does not identify which is which version, nor which language at which site, so the data is not useful to any human reader, and have yet to find that we have any usable data extraction means to have such an association. Further, if a work is a translation, shouldn't that be represented by the name of translation rather than an inverse translation back to the original language, which seems weird. @Aubrey, Jura1: who may have an opinion from the book project side.

At this time, the interwiki component continues to be problematic for the WSes, and is set up more cleanly for the WPs. There is still no easy means to interwiki / represent different editions of work in the inter-language space. Each edition, especially as a translation, is its own entity, more problematic when there are multiple translations, and the WD system is designed to primarily represent at the "work"-level. Can this issue have some thinking to have usefulness and resolution of these difficulties around the data model. Thanks.  — billinghurst sDrewth 02:05, 26 February 2016 (UTC)

Sorry but I don't understand. There is a consensus to use the FRBR system where each edition or translation of a work has its own item. So the main problem is not the data structure but the labelling and the correct connexions between these items. Snipre (talk) 07:00, 26 February 2016 (UTC)
Any real "raven" would have one WD item with labels in different languages and sitelinks to different Wikipedia articles. The same applies to the "abstract" work by Poe and its sitelinks to any Wikipedia, although we do not completely abstract that and consider the work and its "primary expression" (e.g. Poe's manuscript or the first English language edition) as kind of unidividable. But different Wikisources represent several translations and later editions and since these have different and quite distinct properties (translators, titles, dates, ...) they all lead to different items here. They are not mutually interconnected but only star-like, "hierarchically" connected by edition or translation of (P629) and its inverse has edition or translation (P747). So s:cs:Havran (překlad Dostál-Lutinov) is (and probably will be) the only sitelink for Havran (Q15803312), s:cs:Havran (překlad Vrchlický 1881) the only for The Raven (Q15803387) but they are closely related to each other (as "other version") as well as with s:bs:Gavran (Edgar Allan Poe) / The Raven (Q18674552). It is an IMHO old and unsolved question how such "sibling" or "cousin" relations can be exploited to achieve a meaningful "in other languages" display especially in Wikisource instances. I vaguely remember older discussions (different translations of "books" of the bible) and I think the Swedish or the Russian Wikisource edition already might have a solution for it. -- Gymel (talk) 10:12, 26 February 2016 (UTC)
@Snipre: At English Wikisource, I cannot readily utilise WD data to link through interwiki. As such I have an "edition" of a work that doesn't directly link to the WP article; I have an "edition" of a work that cannot link to a translated edition at another language through WD. At WD I have a long listing of editions that do not clearly indicate what is at the end of the link, I know not the language of the work, I know not whether it links to a hosted work, I know not anything about it. So tell me how I can go from an English language edition up to the work then back down another edition(s) link with any accuracy, or knowledge of its usefulness.
@Snipre, billinghurst: This is an old problem that requires of some software development in order to fix it. I have created a task on phabricator for it, I hope @Lydia Pintscher (WMDE): can take a look.--Micru (talk) 11:13, 26 February 2016 (UTC)
I know Micru, though I haven't had a reasonable visual example to which to try and explain the complex case; and it did need other matters sorted first, and I think linking all the sister wikis has been more of a priority. [Noting that I should have recruited Gymel earlier for his clarity!] Actually I see it as two issues, the one for WSes to utilise the data, and the shortcomings on the WD page itself, it seems to be short of visual interpretative data. That an edition of a work won't normally have an article at the WPs, it will predominantly mean that they are linking to WSes.  — billinghurst sDrewth 03:27, 27 February 2016 (UTC)

How to retrieve first image (p18) by another wiki template?

When a specific item (Q5577, for instance) has more than one image, is it possible to retrieve the first, the second, etc.? I ask because this is causing some errors when used in templates, e.g. [[Image:{{#property:P18}}|thumb]] returns [[Image:Image1.jpg, Image2.png|thumb]]. Castelobranco (talk) 15:02, 24 February 2016 (UTC)

Marking one as preferred can solve this. In fact, there should be only one image. Matěj Suchánek (talk) 15:10, 24 February 2016 (UTC)

    --- Jura 15:34, 24 February 2016 (UTC)
@Jura, this code didn't work in the template or i did something wrong when trying it. First, because we didn't have a wikidata module in that wiki ("script error: the module doesn't exist"). After creating Module:Wikidata (by "copy&pasting" from wikipedia), then it gave me another message ("script error: the function specified doesn't exist"). =( @Matěj Suchánek, your solution worked well, thanks a lot! Castelobranco (talk) 03:58, 25 February 2016 (UTC)
Yes, Jura1's solution isn't from enwiki module. It looks like it's not also from Wikidata's Module:Wikidata. Well, I would slightly disagree with Matěj about only one P18 per item. OK, P18 isn't supposed to be a gallery, but some two images I think is fine, especially for old people, who have one image where they're old and one for youngster age. Or sportspeople, who have one image, where they appear in their "sportsform" and one, where their face is visible. File:Brno, Joštova, knihkupectví Dobrovský, autogramiáda Martiny Sáblíkové (04).jpg and File:Martina Sablikova 2007.jpg. OK, maybe these images are not a very good example, but I hope, you get my point. --Edgars2007 (talk) 10:29, 25 February 2016 (UTC)
Sorry @Castelobranco:. It's from cswiki (they have a fairly detailed infobox for people, I discovered some time ago). It doesn't need the qualifier parts there. In any case, it seems that #property is difficult to use with media. Maybe this should be improved.

Constraint templates

There have been a few changes to the constraint templates (Template:Constraint and Template:Constraint:*) and the module (Module:Constraint), among them is the addition of support for right-to-left languages, but these edits have made the templates look ugly (see Property talk:P570 for example). If I reverse the changes on Template:Constraint, the text is correctly aligned again, but I noticed at least for the Dutch translations of Template:Constraint:Item, there is an unneeded word wrap. So the problem is then only partially resolved. Since the reversal doesn't fix all the problems (it creates a new one), can someone else take a look? Mbch331 (talk) 20:40, 26 February 2016 (UTC)

I think the right-to-left problems are solved now. Could you show me where you can see the problem with Dutch translation? (By the way, I added more i18n to Template:Constraint.) Matěj Suchánek (talk) 10:19, 27 February 2016 (UTC)
Just check https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Property_talk:P570?uselang=nl. This is what I see now:
Element: Elementen met deze eigenschap dienen ook de eigenschap geboorteplaats (P19) te
hebben.
And there is plenty of space after "te" to have the sentence on 1 line. Mbch331 (talk) 14:58, 27 February 2016 (UTC)
Looks like I fixed it. It was same even in Czech interface. Matěj Suchánek (talk) 15:57, 27 February 2016 (UTC)

Back-links

Are statements, which have the same value as the item, OK? For example, Honduras (Q783) has country (P17)=Honduras (Q783). OK, it's kind of logical, but we have instance of (P31)=country (Q6256) there. If it's not OK, maybe somebody would like to do some clean-up or write a query? This one (assuming I'm querying the right thing there) gets a time-out. But SQL also should handle that (with pagelinks table). --Edgars2007 (talk) 12:14, 27 February 2016 (UTC)

Constraint reports include them ("self-links", first section on the reports). For the property you mention, there is a lengthy discussion on its talk page.

Query improved. Matěj Suchánek (talk) 13:36, 27 February 2016 (UTC)
Thanks Matěj for fixing the query. Honduras (Q783) was simply an example, that I encountered accidentally. Constraint reports, of course, are good, but not when you want to see the whole picture of issue. Well, found at least two items, that IMO don't need those backlinks: Argentine L-188 fleet (Q17476594) and La Azohia (Q11930258), but it most probably should stay at Radio Libertà (Q3928777). It seems to be a better task for more experienced Wikidatians than me. --Edgars2007 (talk) 15:40, 27 February 2016 (UTC)

All Coordinates to/from Russian Wikipedia Have an Error

  Move from Wikidata:Contact_the_development_team. -- LaddΩ chat ;) 18:10, 27 February 2016 (UTC)

Hello, I noticed there are many many serious problems with Wikidata coordinates which require immediate attention. It seems the Russian Wikipedia is improperly importing coordinates, and then the corrupted coordinates get imported into Wikidata. The problem is that Russian Wikipedia is confusing decimal degrees with minutes!

For example, take a look at the coordinates for Agra and Dubrovnik. I corrected both by the way so look at the history:

  • Agra - English Wikipedia = 27.18°, 78.02° (correct) while Russian Wikipedia = 27.3°, 78.033333° or 27° 18′, 78° 2′ (error)
  • Dubrovnik - same type of error as Agra

My suggestions:

  1. Block all coordinate imports from Russian Wikipedia.
  2. Delete all coordinates imported from Russian Wikipedia.
  3. Contact Russian Wikipedia and have them fix their broken systems.

Automating the list of properties

I have been checking the classification of properties and the tree starts to look quite decent. Perhaps the classification doesn't have as many examples as Wikidata:List of properties, but it is definitely more maintainable. What would be the best way to automate the listing of properties? Listeria? A bot generated list? A custom solution?--Micru (talk) 23:09, 27 February 2016 (UTC)

Update timeCalendarModel description

Currently http://wikiba.se/ontology#timeCalendarModel describes it as "Preferred calendar used to display this date to the user.".

Values are proleptic Gregorian calendar (Q1985727) or proleptic Julian calendar (Q1985786). This is linked from every date in the rdf.

Given the changes last year, I think this should read "Calendar used to store this date.".

Obviously, some work is needed to check what needs to be corrected (some dates were incorrect before the change, other became incorrect due to the definition change), but let's try to get the description right.

Wikimania 2016: call for posters, discussions and trainings

Hi people,
the calls for posters, discussions and trainings for Wikimania 2016 are officially opened, you can find all the relevant links on the conference wiki:

https://wikimania2016.wikimedia.org/wiki/Submissions

The calls will be closed on March 20.

Posters will be reviewed just to make sure that there aren't things which are too much out of scope. Since we have a whole village we will surely find places to attach them, even if we they will be a lot!

Discussions will be managed by a guiding committee who will work on the wiki to meld all the proposals and suggestions.

Trainings will be reviewed by the programme committee. Please note that we request that each training has at least 3-5 interested attendees in order to be put in the programme.

By the beginning of April we will have a first list of all the accepted proposals.

If you have questions we suggest you to ask them on the discussion pages on wiki, so that everyone will be able to see them (and their answers, of course).

We are looking forward to read your ideas! --Yiyi .... (talk!) 12:41, 28 February 2016 (UTC)

Wikidata tours

Hi all

The two existing Wikidata tours are really cool, I'd there to be more but it seems as though they aren't being made. Can someone explain what the blockers are? I'd be very happy to write some of the explanatory text if someone is interested in doing the coding bits. John Cummings (talk) 09:31, 23 February 2016 (UTC)

I don't believe there are any blockers besides someone sitting down and writing the content. @Bene*: Would you be up for helping John with the coding side? --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 21:52, 23 February 2016 (UTC)
Hi John Cummings, the current blocker for creating more tours is that a ui redesign is in progress since more than a year now and one year ago I thought it doesn't make sense to create tours if the ui is outdated anyways after some months. As you see we finally got to the point where we moved identifiers into their own section and perhaps some more steps will follow.
While there is already quite some content created, I think some parts of it are already outdated and it needs some work to improve and update the steps as well as the code to execute the steps. Imo it makes most sense to wait until the new UI has settled and won't change that much. However, I don't know how long that will take and we may want to have more tours before already. -- Bene* talk 18:56, 24 February 2016 (UTC)

There seems to be a bug, or at least a need for increased clarity in the Item Tour. I took this tour today, and followed the example of creating item "Earth." The tour overlay UI clearly states that the sample page behind it is a sandbox, and changes there will not be saved in the actual Wikidata. However, the item I created, Q16943273, did save. I did notice on two occasions that behind the overlay was a Creative Commons acceptance link, which I seemed to have to click in order to proceed. Perhaps this is new, and interfered with the overlay logic. However, since most people who take the tour are probably new, this would be a commonly-encountered problem. Anyway, I am unhappy that I have created a spurious page concerning "the most popular inhabited planet." — Christopher.ursich (talk) 03:11, 29 February 2016 (UTC)

Nevermind, I guess, about the duplicated page. My version definitely did appear in the auto-complete of the search box, but now seems to be gone. I think the usage needs to be clearer. — Christopher.ursich (talk) 03:16, 29 February 2016 (UTC)

Doing massive search-replace actions on string values?

Hi everyone. I may not have looked well enough; is it correct that we have no tool to do large-scale find & replace actions for specific string values of a given property? Use case: in the upload of the Flemish museum data project we were given some wrong URLs that have been used in references and described at URL (P973). I'd like to replace part of those URLs with the correct ones (e.g. described at URL (P973) http://mskgent.be/collection/work/id/$1 must become described at URL (P973) http://mskgent.be/collection/work/data/$1). On Commons we have VisualFileChange.js to do such tasks... maybe here it's only possible by bot? Thanks, Spinster (talk) 16:44, 26 February 2016 (UTC)

@Spinster: Post a request at Wikidata:Bot requests explaining what needs to be done, and a bot operator will take a look. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 18:41, 26 February 2016 (UTC)
Looking at the urls and the site, it would seem that we are are utilising it as an authority base. If that is the case, then it may be worthwhile requesting a property for data for mskgent.be.  — billinghurst sDrewth 03:35, 27 February 2016 (UTC)
Actually that's already there: MSK Gent work PID (P2511). (Changed the formatter URL of that property to the new one). Mbch331 (talk) 08:01, 27 February 2016 (UTC)
Indeed, but there the old formatter URL was good. I can imagine it might be confusing, so I tried to explain the distinction between the different formatter URLs on the property's talk page. I hope it is clear! By the way, as soon as we have this whole recently uploaded collection doublechecked here, I'll start filling that property so that it's being used (see discussion about unused properties above). Thanks for the suggestion about filing a bot request, I'll do that (but it's quite a bit of work, it's not just this one URL pattern that needs changing, so if anyone knows of a tool so that I can do it myself, that would probably be even better). Spinster (talk) 19:37, 28 February 2016 (UTC)

Lok sabha constituencies

  1. i have added topics main category to category:16th lok sabha members to around 500 items. Is it correct or i need to use different statement. Some one advised to remove the property, if so how can i revert in 500+ pages.
  2. i have developed a module in enwiki for infobox lok sabha constituency which fetch data from wikidata (see en:Thiruvallur (Lok Sabha constituency), for that i have prepared data in excel to insert in to constituencies & member items. I am still not in conclusion what properties should have to be added. It have details such as constituency, electors, successful candidates, election date, party name etc

. these data will be added for each elections. (data i populated is from enwiki &eco.nic.in) - thanks -Mdmahir (talk) 15:33, 28 February 2016 (UTC)

Why do this? Many of the last Lokh Sabha elections are already included. It is in the date that they started representing a constituency. A category makes no sense on Wikidata. Yes, changes can easily be removed. Thanks, GerardM (talk) 19:33, 28 February 2016 (UTC)

Kasparbot

Kasparbot tells us, that moving the persondata from en:WP to WD will be finished on "Thursday, 19 Jul 2018." I´m afraid it is a bad solution doing all that by hand. --Molarus 19:38, 20 February 2016 (UTC)

+1. What's the limiting factore there - do we know? —LuisVilla (talk) 23:17, 21 February 2016 (UTC)
Kaspar (@T.seppelt:) is simply doing an extrapolation based on the number of challenges decided by users divided by the number of days since Kaspar made the database available (or possibly since he started the bot run, I'm unsure). --Izno (talk) 12:12, 23 February 2016 (UTC)
Yes, it's a simple extrapolation based on the amount of decisions between the timestamp of the first decision and the current timestamp. I am afraid that the decision rate will decrease a lot more. Recently about 100 decisions are made every day. The value bigger than 1,000 is caused by checking automatically which challenges were already accepted not with the tool and marking them as accepted. The project is going to take much longer. I can't come up with options to make it faster apart from promoting the project. There were strong objections againt an automatic import in the community. --T.seppelt (talk) 14:49, 23 February 2016 (UTC)
I don´t think that an automatic import is the right option, but there are some challenges that could be done by bot. For example, if there is the information "death_place = xxx" / "birth_place = xxx" and WD has no such information. I would propose that such rules could be tested by comparing hand input and rule. If the rule is as good as the hand input for the same challenge, the rule can be used. I guess that 100.000+ challenges could be done like that. By the way, mix and match and freebase have the same problem. And we developed bot input three years ago, because typing WP info by hand into WD didn´t get us anywhere. I was around three years ago, we wouldn´t have 15 mio items doing all that by hand. What does that mean in practice? It would be nice if our bots could work with the Kaspa data, mix and match data and the freebase data. This way, bots and editors could work together. But I´m no bot owner, I don´t know if that is possible. --Molarus 18:05, 23 February 2016 (UTC)
Is the KasparBot providing the data to the Primary Sources Tool? If yes this would be an option to accept data for users who are not familiar with the Persondata challenge. Queryzo (talk) 10:19, 25 February 2016 (UTC)
@T.seppelt: Furthermore I suggest to link a new challenge in the summary of the edit so unparticipated users can easily join the project. Queryzo (talk) 12:29, 29 February 2016 (UTC)
This is a good idea, Molarus. I will import the infobox values from enwiki and check the challenges afterwards. This should help us a lot. Queryzo: I thought about donating the data to the PST. It doesn't support calendar models. This is why I decided to keep everything in one place and build the tool. I'll implement the links to new challenges. -- T.seppelt (talk) 14:29, 29 February 2016 (UTC)

New data donation from TED

I am starting to upload TED talk items which you can observe here. If you have any tips or suggestions let me know. They only have about 2000 items total and photo's, media, or data on TEDx talks are not part of this initial data donation. Jane023 (talk) 15:18, 25 February 2016 (UTC)

Good idea though I am not a big fan of them. Maybe each item should be classified with instance of (P31): TED talk and the item defined is subclass of (P279): convention (Q625994) or such and part of (P361): TED (Q189021)? Matěj Suchánek (talk) 15:45, 25 February 2016 (UTC)
Thanks! I hesitated about creating a TED talk item, because IF we ever start uploading TEDx talks do we give those the same item? Also, there is probably a precedent for making a generic item for a speech that is recorded and becomes a film and thus have two dates (inception and publication). Do you know of any examples that look like your suggestions? --Jane023 (talk) 15:52, 25 February 2016 (UTC)
I also noticed in the data that not all of them were at a convention, but at something called TED University and one is at the BBC (!). --Jane023 (talk) 15:55, 25 February 2016 (UTC)
I would say TED talks are speeches (events), so they should be classified as events. The recordings could be linked using properties (if they are availible). Matěj Suchánek (talk) 18:21, 25 February 2016 (UTC)
I was thinking along the same lines, because the events are anchored in time and space, whereas the (sometimes heavily edited) films can be published months later. This is also why I have not used the creator property for these "films". The film is not exactly part of an event, but a documentation of an event. I am disinclined to think of a single TED talk as an event, which is technically not true, as the entire gathering is the event, sometimes going on for more than a day. Thanks for thinking along! --Jane023 (talk) 18:41, 25 February 2016 (UTC)
I don't think inception (P571) is really the right property to use for these. --Yair rand (talk) 20:29, 25 February 2016 (UTC)
Have you got a suggestion what I should use? I just noticed there are iMDB identifiers for these too, so I was looking at what they use: "star" for the speaker and "release date" for the speech date. Jane023 (talk) 21:31, 25 February 2016 (UTC)
I'm not sure what you're currently using them for. If the items were being treated as events, and you wanted a property for when they took place, the right property would be point in time (P585). Since they currently have instance of (P31) film (Q11424), presumably you want to add something about a particular event with regards to the item, so you should probably use significant event (P793), with point in time (P585) as a qualifier. --Yair rand (talk) 22:13, 25 February 2016 (UTC)
That means that you choose to see them as speeches anchored in place and time, while I believe some of the films were created and published several months or a year later. It helps to look at the iMDB setup. --Jane023 (talk) 12:55, 26 February 2016 (UTC)

Rather than using inventory number (P217) and described at URL (P973), I was planning to propose a "TED talk ID" property. We should have separate items for "TED talk", "TEDx talk" and so on. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 04:27, 26 February 2016 (UTC)

OK and what would that TED talk item be an instance of - speech or film? How do you feel about an item for the convention like "TED2010" or "TEDxSUMMIT" that these could be part of? That's how it looks on iMDB so I was considering that. --Jane023 (talk) 12:53, 26 February 2016 (UTC)

Update: I am going to make convention items and make the films part of the convention items. See TEDMED 2009 (Q22976107) and use what links here to find items. This gives context to the talks (that occasionally refer to others in the same TED conference) and anchors them in time and place. --Jane023 (talk) 09:52, 29 February 2016 (UTC)

Chemical elements

Hi, I'm new here and I was looking for info on chemical elements - and surprised to find that there's not very much here (only atomic number). But the infobox on wikipedia is chock full :D. So I was wondering whether this is for some certain purpose, or whether it's just pretty work intensive to import all that info into Wikidata, (or of course, the ontology for chemical elements is not worked out yet, and so import is stalled). Thanks and kind regards, 149.172.42.242 10:20, 27 February 2016 (UTC)

Huh, anon question not worth answering or something? 149.172.42.242 22:11, 27 February 2016 (UTC)
There are many properties that are still missing, you can propose them at wd:pp.--Micru (talk) 23:11, 27 February 2016 (UTC)
It should be noted that atomic number was an easy property from the start because it's only a number. Most other chemical properties require physical units, which were not available in wikidata until October 2015. So I would definitely recommend somebody work on adding the needed properties as proposals under Wikidata:Property_proposal/Natural_science. Also you should review what's been done in Wikidata:WikiProject_Chemistry (many relevant properties have been created already, maybe nobody's gotten around to doing an import.) Identifiers to utilise external identifier

Is there a program to update the identifiers to change their property type to external identifier from string? I am only seeing a small number of them having been updated, and, a couple of weeks along, I would have hoped that this restricted task could have been done.  — billinghurst sDrewth 04:46, 28 February 2016 (UTC)

As I understand it the limiting factor is determining which properties are external identifiers and which are not. It seems that finding a definition that includes all external identifiers but excludes all that are not is tricky. The discussions seem to be happening at User:Addshore/Identifiers. Thryduulf (talk: local | en.wp | en.wikt) 10:56, 28 February 2016 (UTC)
Wouldn't be easier to call them "external sources" and put everything into that section without so many complications?--Micru (talk) 11:01, 28 February 2016 (UTC)
Yeah, either that or called it "globally unique identifiers" or "Freebase keys" so everybody is happy. The current header isn't really helping.
--- Jura 11:17, 28 February 2016 (UTC)
The problem isn't the name, the problem is that a new data type has been added which overlaps significantly with an existing data type, without any guidance on when the new data type should be used and when it shouldn't. We can't just convert everything because any string property can be turned into an external-id property. - Nikki (talk) 13:45, 28 February 2016 (UTC)
Then it would be easier to convert all the strings to ext-id and decide which ones should stay string. The point of having external id's was to reduce clutter in items, not to waste so much time in finding the perfect criteria. Btw, I don't understand why the discussion is happening in a user page instead of a RFC.--Micru (talk) 14:03, 28 February 2016 (UTC)
<deskthunk> that this wasn't sorted prior to the change; that a discussion is taking place tucked away on a user subpage (transparency! not); and that the identifiers that are clear should just be done (all the authority controls for instance).  — billinghurst sDrewth 22:38, 28 February 2016 (UTC)
I think there is a connection with the Wikidata:UI redesign input. --Molarus 01:51, 29 February 2016 (UTC)
Folks, point taken about user page. But it has been linked to in many places among them the weekly summary. It was announced well in advance and I even delayed the conversion on request. The world isn't ending. Let's get it done and move on :) Imho items are already looking much cleaner. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk) 08:53, 29 February 2016 (UTC)

People born on the 29th of February

Wikidata:Database reports/birthday today is much shorter than usually ;)

Since they only have birthday once every four year, I know two persons that became grandparents as teenagers. ;) -- Innocent bystander (talk) 07:49, 29 February 2016 (UTC)
About Wikidata:Database reports/birthday today, do you think that this page could be translated? Pamputt (talk) 17:11, 29 February 2016 (UTC)
There is fr:Projet:Wikidata/Listes/Anniversaire aujourd'hui and a version in Catalan. It's harder to do at Wikidata without accessing too many items.
--- Jura 17:16, 29 February 2016 (UTC)
BTW, ruwiki has categories for date of birth. Feb 29, if somedoby wants to cross-check (and some more languages: Category:February 29 births (Q7020902)). --Edgars2007 (talk) 17:18, 29 February 2016 (UTC)
We could use that for Wikidata:Bot_requests#Too_many_people_born_on_January_1.

Bulk minusculization of labels

Hi,

while browsing through items I find large amount of items that have improperly capital letter in their label. I feel competent to evaluate these in my native Czech language, but I guess many labels in different languages require a check as well.

These items need relabeling since if I pretend that the label is appearing in the middle of a normal sentence (as in Help:Label#Capitalization), they should not be capitalized.

Before I start working on some way of fixing this, I would like to ask if there have been any attempts to address this problem in the past, so I dont have to reinvent the wheel again. If you have any suggestions on how to do these in least tedious way, the advice would be welcome. --Wesalius (talk) 09:03, 24 February 2016 (UTC)

Michiel1972 worked on this for Dutch labels in the beginning of Wikidata. Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 09:11, 24 February 2016 (UTC)
Yes, I also wanted to clean-up capitalization of labels in my native Latvian, but have many other things to do as well, so haven't started yet :) --Edgars2007 (talk) 15:20, 24 February 2016 (UTC)
@Michiel1972: Would you be kind and tell us how you handled the relabeling? --Wesalius (talk) 18:26, 24 February 2016 (UTC)
When I did this task for Italian language, I followed this way:
  • MySQL: make a list with wikipedia pages that are linked to wiktionary and the wiktionary page title is lower case
  • MySQL: exclude from the list above pages that are in certain categories (depend of the specific project)
  • PywikiBot: elaborate the list with a bot for changing labels

--β16 - (talk) 10:14, 25 February 2016 (UTC)

Thank you β16. I see that you ran this task back in 2013, do you happen to have the SQL query for generating the list of wikipedia pages that are linked to wiktionary and the wiktionary page title is lower case still available? --Wesalius (talk) 15:55, 25 February 2016 (UTC)
I do not found it, I think it's dead with the old toolserver. But it's not complicated, something like (MySQL):
SELECT DISTINCT(page.page_title)
FROM page INNER JOIN iwlinks ON page.page_id = iwlinks.iwl_from
 WHERE page.page_namespace = 0
   AND iwlinks.iwl_prefix = 'wikt'
   AND iwlinks.iwl_title RLIKE '^[a-z].*';

Do you have access to database? --β16 - (talk) 09:32, 26 February 2016 (UTC)

There is quarry:. --Edgars2007 (talk) 23:26, 26 February 2016 (UTC)

Thank you for the help so far. Can I ask some basic questions about the SQL you posted? I ran the quarry and I am not entirely sure what the results say. Which wiki did the query run against if there is not database specified (does it default to en.wiki?)? With help of SQL reference sheet I figured out the individual statements, but I dont understand yet why the character set for iterwikilinks titles (iwlinks.iwl_title RLIKE '^[a-z].*';) is negated (I would be happy to learn why).

I ran the query against cs.wiki and it seems to be giving the results I am looking for - w:cs:Turistika has an equivalent of wikt:cs:turistika and Czech label of "Turistika" at tourism (Q49389) that needs relabeling. --Wesalius (talk) 20:29, 29 February 2016 (UTC)

Wikidata weekly summary #198

What should item types be called?

I am referring to the items that other items are instances of. These are themselves items, but they have the special property "subclass". This would indicate that they are to be called "classes". The top level of the hierarchy (which has the subclass property, but is not a subclass of anything) is called "entity". What is the standard term used for all items of this kind?  – The preceding unsigned comment was added by Jimbelton (talk • contribs). 05:05, 28 February 2016 (UTC)
