In some languages there exist different pages on projections and orthogonal projections which is fine. The English wikipedia, however, redirects from "Orthogonal projection" to "Projection (Linear Algebra)" which makes sense if one just wants to have one page that covers both. But it should then be this page that becomes the English link both for Q980329 and for Q519967. --Scherben (talk) 09:57, 17 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

This is not an interwiki conflict, but a mistake in adding de.wikipedia link to the wrong item:
  1. molecular model (Q2196961) is about molecular models (not only models built using plastic balls and sticks)
  2. molecular model set (Q1943408) is an item created exclusively for the commons:Category:Chemical structures built with molecular model sets, there won't be any useful statements in this item ever
  3. de:Molekülbaukasten = commons:Category:Molecular model sets.
We are not linking 'similar' in WD, there should be a third item for de.wiki article. Such interwiki link can be placed locally in de.wiki. Wostr (talk) 12:58, 25 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

There are indeed 2 different entities:
  • The municipality (or commune, or 4th order administrative division), which may contain several populated places
    • GeoNames: 6437291 (fourth-order administrative division)
    • Who's on First: 404404633 (localadmin)
  • The populated place (or human settlement), which is located inside a municipality
    • GeoNames: 2998298 (populated place)
    • Who's on First: 101763525 (locality)
As Cebuano Wikipedia uses bots to generate articles from GeoNames and Who's on First, they usually have two different articles, for the municipality and for the populated place, respectively. The problem is that the rest of Wikipedias normally have one single article, and the corresponding Wikidata item usually mixes GeoNames and Who's on First IDs! I have found this error many times. I propose that if there is only 1 single article, this should be associated with the municipality item, and not with the populated place item. Why? For example, statements about population (P1082) and office held by head of government (P1313) refer to the municipality, not to the populated place.
Therefore:

The German Wikipedia article "Kurort" is currently linked to the English Wikipedia article "spa town" and the Japanese Wikipedia article "温泉街". In Germany "Kurort" is legally defined as a place where people can take a cure for medical purposes. Such a cure can be prescribed by a medical doctor and health insurances usually pay for such a cure. The English article "spa town" and the Japanese article "温泉街" describe holiday destinations, whose main attractions are hot springs, but are not recognized as medical cures. The Japanese article "クアオルト" on the other hand, describes the concept of "Kurort" in Germany, with its medical and legal implications. I therefore propose to disconnect "温泉街" from object Q4946461 ("Kurort"), and replace it with "クアオルト" from object Q28067896. --Doktork (talk) 05:54, 4 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Wotheina, Iso10970, Loup and Law, Tekeonin, JapaneseA: Opinions? --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 15:48, 4 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose. I suggest you move German "Kurort" to Q28067896("クアオルト"). Reason:The creator of Q4946461("spa town : specialized resort town situated around a mineral spa")[1] appears not limiting it to healings nor German-government-regulated version, and I bet all Wikipedias (including de.wikipedia) will eventually need an article about all those non-German (typically American) "spa town/resort" concept. Now, most, if not all, articles linked from Q28067896 seems more general, not restricted to German-government-regulated version even if their titles use the word "Kurort". So, keep all of them in Q4946461, and move only the few articles of narrower sense to Q28067896. By the way, I wonder what to do with the "Weltbad" section, and could de:Kurpark be filled into Q4946461? (Well, the appropriateness of putting the Japanese "温泉街"(or which else among the chaotic pile of articles) in Q4946461 is another huge question, but that's a different issue.) Wotheina (talk) 06:08, 5 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Wotheina: But then, both English and Chinese articles mentioned both, is your comments meaning that both en and zh should also be another separated item? --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 04:58, 17 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Liuxinyu970226: The articles you mentioned: English and Chinese both does not contain even a single occurence of word "Kurort" or mention any German law. Perhaps you meant to quote different articles? Anyway, articles that mention both the broader ("any kind of spa-like things") and/or narrower meanings can stay in Q4946461 as it is now. Just move articles that are dedicated to the narrower German-government-licenced-only meaning into Q28067896. No need to artificially split any existing articles. Most of the 36 articles(languages) that are currently bound to Q4946461 (including non-german articles titled "Kurort") seems generic, and aren't restricted to German licence. So we only need to move one article, de:Kurort. The remaining 35 articles can stay in Q4946461. --Wotheina (talk) 07:16, 17 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Wotheina: Well, here is what I've looked from zh:温泉镇: "温泉镇是一类以温泉及水疗法为卖点的旅游型城镇,中西方均存在许多直接以“温泉”或“温泉镇”命名的城镇,较著名者包括斯帕及巴斯,而日本则有类似的温泉街。" (lit. Kurort is a kind of travel town that seels spa and hydrotherapy, China and Western countries are having towns that named "spa" or "kurort" directly, for example Spa and Bath, while Japan has a likely type called Onsen street). --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 12:07, 20 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Liuxinyu970226: Ah, if you are responding to my remarks "(Well,..." on 06:08, 5 February 2020 (UTC)), then I'm really sorry, those remarks about "温泉街" were off-topic, so I shouldn't have said that here. May I strike them out to avoid confusion? Next, I suggest you not translate "温泉镇" to "kurort" here. Doktork's definition of "Kurort" is very strict — only German-law-certificated facilities can be called "Kurort", and others shouldn't. I guess Chinese word "温泉镇" is not limited to German-law-certificated facilities, so you'd better translate it to a more generic English term such as "hot-spring town", not "kurort". Now, I repeat my opinion: Move only de:Kurort article to Q28067896. Keep en:Spa town, zh:温泉镇 to Q4946461, regardless of what they say or not about Japan. --Wotheina (talk) 04:43, 21 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The accepted name is that of Eucalyptus clelandiorum (Q65066343). English wikipedia has two articles (one for each) So there seems to be some merging needed in enwiki. And the rest of the world for some reason has used the name Eucalyptus clelandii together with its wrongly attached ids. Thanks @Succu:That will resolve the issue with respect to enwiki but not with respect to wikidata and the fact that all the non-English wikipedia articles for E. clelandii (and wikidata) are using all the E. clelandiorum ids). I guess we just attach the ids to the correct wikidata item and hope that no-one reinstates them? MargaretRDonald (talk) 12:40, 27 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@MargaretRDonald, Succu: I guess so, yes. Perhaps it would help if we point out the taxon name in the WD item Eucalyptus clelandii (Q5405561) as a synonym of Eucalyptus clelandiorum? Is there a WD property suitable for that? –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 13:06, 27 March 2020 (UTC).[reply]
Perhaps it is worth considering to create a qualifier "orthographic variants" and/or "misspelling" to taxon name (P225)? Lymantria (talk) 15:12, 27 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I've made some changes. Please have a look. --Succu (talk) 19:47, 27 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Lymantria: Not a bad idea, but we need to remember that the term "synonym" has a very precise and scientifically valid status within the fields of taxonomy and biological nomenclature, while misspellings are just... wrong. Hence, most often misspellings are not considered synonyms, and as a result they are very rarely mentioned at all (since contrary to synonyms they are of no value in the research). Analogous to this, synonyms are not misspellings and should always be mentioned.
Lastly, we need of course also remember that "taxon" and "taxon name" are two different things. One is the actual species, and the other the name of that species. As an example the taxon name Eucalyptus clelandi and the taxon name Eucalyptus clelandiorum are both names of the same taxon. But both taxon names are unique and have their own merit, therefore their WD items shouldn't be merged. Sort of in the same way we don't merge human (Q5) with Homo sapiens (Q15978631). I fully believe that you, Lymantria, know this, but I also know that many other Wikidata users struggle with it.
@Succu: It looks a lot better than before, but the "taxon name" statements in Eucalyptus clelandii (Q5405561) renders an "allowed qualifiers constraint" error. Also, the nomenclatural status (P1135) property doesn't accept orthographical variant (Q2491016) as a value (which I guess is good, since orhography has nothing to do with officially accepted nomenclatural statuses). A good start though, so thanks! –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 03:52, 29 March 2020 (UTC).[reply]
The comment "As an example the taxon name Eucalyptus clelandi and the taxon name Eucalyptus clelandiorum are both names of the same taxon" is false. What would be possible is Eucalyptus clelandiorum is the name of a taxon". As Eucalyptus clelandii is only an orthographical variant/misspelling, it cannot be the name of a taxon, or be a synonym. In nomenclatural terms: Eucalyptus clelandii has no nomenclatural status. It could be phrased as "Eucalyptus clelandii and Eucalyptus clelandiorum are the same name for a taxon" or more conventionally "Eucalyptus clelandii is a misspelling of Eucalyptus clelandiorum".
There are many users at Wikidata who like to use "taxon name" for anything that catches their attention (in this approach, basically three men that meet in a bar and write a name on a beermat can coin a new "taxon name"); at best they are willing to add a qualifier that this taxon name can not be the name of a taxon. Given that there are long-standing international agreements on what can be, and what can not be, the name of a taxon, this is Original Research at its worst. - Brya (talk) 07:40, 3 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Wow. I’m more used to animal names where the original form sticks even if it is ungrammatical or downright misspelled. Is there a technical term for this (invalid or replaced because of grammar) that could be used as a qualifier (if not a property)? “Orthographical variant” is close, but something more particular would be nice. The merge was done by User:Gambo7 (even before I created this IC report). Succu reverted it in one hour, but didn't sort interwiki links appropriately. --ŠJů (talk) 19:49, 22 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Still waiting for responds from WikiProjects Taxonomy and COVID-19. --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 04:37, 17 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Liuxinyu970226: Since the merger attempt was reverted, I tried to sort and separate wikilinks by article/category title. Unfortunately, I am not able to distinguish links which are not in Latin, Cyrillic or Greek scripts. There is (was) a big chaos in wikilinks: some "Coronavirus(es)" articles and categories were matched to Orthocoronavirinae, some to Coronaviridae. In addition, several languages use titles like Orthocoronavirus (which should be perceived as equivalents of Coronavirus, as well as equivalents of Orthocoronavirinae). --ŠJů (talk) 08:58, 21 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
article items affected: Coronavirus (Q290805)/Coronavirus (Q57751738)/Coronaviridae (Q1134583)
corresponding category items affected: Category:Coronaviruses (Q9535147)/Category:Orthocoronavirinae (Q91302879)/Category:Coronaviridae (Q6212688)

@Liuxinyu970226: To make things even more complicated, Succu created a new item Coronavirus (Q91470112) with identical name (label) as Coronavirus (Q290805) recently. Thus, now we have two items for coronaviruses (on of them for the abolished genus, the second one for the persisting meaning of the word), and we can hardly tell which of the existing articles and categories belongs to which of the "two meanings". Besides, some of the articles and categories on coronaviruses (especially in non-Latin writings) remain probably linked to Coronavirus (Q57751738) or Coronaviridae (Q1134583). Many of the articles were originally created for the genus. The genus was abolished and removed from the official taxonomy (divided to several new genuses), but names and item of the articles in many languages remain identical. The meaning of the word remains relevant and identical, but the word ceased to be a systematic name of the genus. What are the persisting articles about? Coronavirus (Q91470112), or Coronavirus (Q290805)? --ŠJů (talk) 19:34, 22 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

"Coronavirus" is not a family, not even a genus. It is a colloquial common name for all the "Orthocoronavirinae" viruses.
It is not related to the Coronaviridae family, because it includes both the Orthocoronavirinae and the Letovirinae subfamilies, and the latter are not "coronaviruses".
So again, the term strictly refers to Orthocoronavirinae only. --Gambo7 (talk) 21:17, 22 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I think taht somebody should contact some people in those wikis (most if not all of them are cirillic languages) and tell them they are just doing wrong calling "Coronavirus" the all the Coronaviridae family. --Gambo7 (talk) 16:21, 24 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Gambo7: Another way is to try creating redirects for Wikidata-linking, as I can confirm that doing so isn't possible for zhwiki zh:冠状病毒. --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 10:31, 13 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  Notified participants of WikiProject Railways ^^ --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 01:32, 9 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure. I would keep both items, since the tube station and the railway station can obviously be considered separate entities, but maybe a new approach would be appropriate. London Waterloo station (Q795691) (mainline) and Waterloo tube station (Q13141057) (tube, part of the other item) exist, which gives us a baseline for how to deal with this but I think it might make more sense to either have one item which "has part" both the mainline station and the tube station (three items total), or to remove the part of (P361) relationships (ignoring article content which is structured otherwise) and indicate interchange through interchange station (P833) (two items total). For both I would move the sitelinks that are about the tube station to the new item, but I'm not sure about the others. In OpenStreetMap you would have a separate relation to indicate that both stations are part of the same station group. Jc86035 (talk) 09:05, 9 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Umm @Jc86035: I would instead plan to remove has part(s) (P527) on those National Rail stations which point to Underground stations (as interchange station (P833) already enough), but not part of (P361)London station group (Q1311711) because that's another umbrella transport-related topic. I'm not familiar with OSM data in the United Kingdom, since they use more complex tags than Asian and American countries. --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 03:41, 10 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

There is no interwiki conflict here: for example enwiki has pages on both concepts. There need to be two items. In addition, these are clearly two distinct concepts. There are lots and lots of strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae (some of them commercial secrects), and there is a vast amount of literature on these strains. Baker's yeast is a set of strains, and, in a way, viewed from a certain angle, is a subset of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. - Brya (talk) 14:14, 2 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
-
The commercial strains are often classified into either “bakers' yeast” or “brewers' yeast”. Wild S. cerevisiae would be a separate (paraphyletic) subgroup. Laboratory strains can be derived from either. Does German have something like brauhefe? (Google Translate gives me Bierhefe.) But in other contexts, the terms brewers or bakers yeast may both be used as synonymous common names for the species in general. (To complicate things: it may also be possible to brew with other species, so “brewing yeast” could have a wider meaning?). I found beer yeast (Q23817632), which only has a couple of labels, a sitelink to w:fr, and no other statements. Both Q911712 and Q23817632 are subclasses of nutritional yeast (Q1786540), but the description of the latter is “deactivated yeast” and the former two are used for their active qualities. Deactivated nutritional yeast should be distinct from dried yeast, plus brewers' bakers' and "nutritional" yeasts may all be purchased dry or moist. For 'pedia articles, it should be possible to determine the scope, but for photos that you haven’t taken yourself, it could be difficult. Pelagic (talk) 21:32, 16 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Argh, according to #Alcoholic beverages, bottom-fermenting yeast is a different species. Seems like the brewers yeast vs. S. cerevisiae question is the easier aspect, compared to brewers yeasts, S. carlsbergensis / S. pastorianus, nutritional yeast, and some kind of practical category of commercial/culinary yeast products (yeast extract is in there somewhere also). Honestly this is more than a Wikidata problem. Pinkwashing originated as a breast cancer-related term, but then became used for a different LGBT reasons. As the two terms have different histories and information, there should really be two articles for the two separate concepts in each language. (I personally am saddened to see that only English Wikipedia has an article for the original breast cancer term, but so it goes.) As it stands, I just went through each language article, and they are primarily translations of each other, and mention the term was originally coined by breast cancer activists but only talk about the LGBT-related information. So only the sv: Pinkwashing article is a challenge here. If the Swedish article cannot be split in two, perhaps it should be switched to a disambiguation page instead. • All of the items should be kept. They are different works with different authors, and this kind of item structure is normal for translated creative works. I don't know if the interwiki links are appropriate; I think it could make sense to assign all of the links to the original. Jc86035 (talk) 05:48, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Interwiki links are definitively appropriate: hymns are commonly translated. See for example w:A mighty fortress is our God and w:de:Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott - effectively the same piece of music, but in English it is better known to an English translation. I find it confusing that such works would be classified as a different item; this seems counter-intuitive and does not help with inter-language links, which is avowedly the principal use of this kind of information on Wikipedia. In any case, as with Ein feste Burg, the article on this hymn in English, and justly so, also has content about the original German version... There is one watercourse named Fiery Creek in Victoria. I have recently created en:Fiery Creek (Victoria) and OSM relation 11156149 (a relation with two parts that flow from one to the other). However, there are two articles in CEB and SV Wikipedia, and they use different Geonames and GNS identifiers. I have linked the English article to the item closest to the mouth of the creek. I am not sure how to safely merge these items, or how to distinguish them if not merged. --ScottDavis (talk) 12:48, 3 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@ScottDavis: Hard one, but I fear quite common. Path of least resistance: treat them as two items, then make a third item about the dyad (link with "has part"), which your article would be linked to. Harder option: delete one item in Geonames (or can you merge?), then try to ask for the same in GNS, then request deletion in ceb,sv (I've done this many times - don't bother with "request merge", just skip straight to deletion), then finally you can merge WD items. --99of9 (talk) 23:44, 3 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I have come across hundreds of these in my Aus/NZ geo-rummaging. As far as I can tell, Geonames splits a river or similar that sits over multiple local government areas/territorial districts, which is quite common in Australia and New Zealand (but there could be other reasons it happens), then Lsjbot generated articles on ceb and sv wikis for each Geonames entry. Sometimes I have unlinked the ceb/sv duplicate and merged the items, but that's not ideal as GDWFlood bot or whatever will probably just recreate another item for the (now unlinked) CEB/SV article, so you are probably best trying to get it fixed properly. It's a pain in the arse if you're trying to resolve hundreds or thousands of these, but if it's just the one stream you are concerned about it might be worth getting GN/GNS/cebwiki/svwiki AND Wikidata all fixed by following 99of9's method. --Canley (talk) 06:11, 4 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I am not trying to solve the general case at the moment. I got here from family history research that a relative was born at Fiery Creek in 1855 and I had no idea where it was. It looks like I'll have to learn Cebuano and Swedish. --ScottDavis (talk) 07:48, 4 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@ScottDavis: the good news is that the templates {{delete}} and {{merge}} still work in those languages. --99of9 (talk) 03:48, 5 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@ScottDavis: What's in SV/CEB Wikipedias is pretty much crap automatically generated (without evidence of a human in the loop) from a non-authoritative source for Australian place naming which means Wikidata is full of similar crap. This is why I am hesitant to trust content in Wikidata until some kind of standards are implemented in terms of reliable sources. Just look at the Victorian official place names and be guided by it. It is of course entirely possible there are two Fiery Creeks in Victoria, certainly in Queensland we never worry about having dozens of creeks with the same name ..., but, wearing my genealogy hat, if you are discussing a birth, I'd be inclined to think you are looking for a settlement/property name rather than a watercourse name. Kerry Raymond (talk) 04:02, 5 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Kerry Raymond: I agree about those two Wikipedia languages. I traced the creek in OpenStreetMap and confirmed that there is only one before I created the English Wikipedia article. I am not familiar with GNS or GeoNames to know how to merge or delete the duplicate entry there, assuming that one Wikidata item can't have two identifiers from those indexes. The Fiery Creek post office was an early name for the one at Streatham, but my genealogy issue appears to refer to the Fiery Creek goldfields north of Beaufort (the family appears to have visited several goldfields). Thanks @99of9: I will try the merge tags on the foreign wikipedias and see what happens. --ScottDavis (talk) 07:08, 6 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

In Swedish wikpedia there are two separate articles for salute "Salut" and for a specific royal salute "Kungliga salut" which is more thorough article for how salute is done in Sweden. However in Finnish there is only one term for both, both are salute "kunnialaukaus" and ther is no term for specific type of salute. The term "kunnialaukaus woul be the accurate translationa nad correct article to refer to from both Swedish wikipedia articles. This is why there should be a link to FInnish wikipedia aerticle "kunnianlaukaus" from both.

My understanding was that “Hindu-Arabic numerals” referred to the derived European forms 0123456789, and “Arabic numerals” to those used with Perso-Arabic scripts ٩٨٧٦٥٤٣٢١٠. But English Wikipedia uses “Arabic” for the former and “Eastern Arabic” for the latter (Eastern Arabic numerals (Q61744)). The argument is that the European forms derive proximally from Western Arabic. It uses “Hindu-Arabic numeral system” to cover the whole group [European + Arabic + Indic]. But the treatment in other language Wikipedias may be quite different, and hard to untangle.

It’s also notable that w:en lumps Western Arabic and modern European into a single article, but has separate ones for Bengali, Devanagari, Gujarati, Gurmukhi, Sinhala, and Tamil, rather than a single article for Indic numerals. And so we end up with Bengali–Assamese numeral (Q15939920), Devanagari numeral (Q2721451) (what, “Indian numerals”?), Gujarati numeral (Q28757937), Gurmukhi numerals (Q24943341), Sinhala numerals (Q19738800), Tamil numerals (Q7681423). Yes, w:en:Devanagari numerals is linked from Devanagari numeral (Q2721451) [2] not Devanagari numeral (Q68202932) [3]. What’s more important, interwiki links or semantic correctness?

Many of these scripts have alternate numeration systems that predate the decimal place system and introduction of zero, for example Sinhala Illakkan, similar to how Western Europe used “Roman numerals” before “Hindu-Arabic numerals”. So it’s not 100% correct to state “Sinhala numerals instance of Hindu-Arabic numerals”. Separate items for “Sinhala digits”, etc. would be more accurate, but is there any benefit in creating them?

Sorry for the long rant, but it’s a case of the more one looks, the more problems one finds. Pelagic (talk) 21:49, 17 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi gang! The German WP "Vergesellschaftung" is linked to English WP "Social ownership". This is wrong -- the two words *could* mean the same thing, but the German article describes "socialization" in the sociological sense, not in a *political/economic* sense. Hence this German article should be linked to English WP "Socialization". I tried to make that change, but was prevented because that English article is already linked to German WP "Sozialisierung". Which is correct, because "Sozialisierung" and "Vergesellschaftung" are synonyms in German *in this particular sense*. (Both also have other senses.) (It happens frequently in German that you have two words for something -- one with Germanic roots and one borrowed from Romance languages. As in English for that matter -- but in English, the Romance words are no longer considered foreign, and the Germanic words for some modern abstract concepts have not developed.) Anyway -- merging "Vergesellschaftung" and "Sozialisierung" in German WP might be a solution, but would be a non-trivial operation because of the multiple senses of both words. I tried to add the German page "Belgisches Niederländisch" as a link from English "flemish". In enwiki they use the colloquial term, in dewiki they use the professional linguistic term, but it's on the same subject. I got the error message: "Site link dewiki:Belgisches Niederländisch is already used by item Belgian Dutch (Q1404296). Perhaps the items should be merged. Ask at d:Wikidata:Interwiki conflicts if you believe that they should not be merged." Which is interesting since "Belgian Dutch" is indeed a redirect to flemish. Please fix.

CAGR is a business term for measuring growth. The German Wikipedia and some others lists it together growth rates in other contexts (mathematical, biological, …) in one article growth rate (Q3516239). This is about the "Hugo" series of video games which was also a call-in TV show in various countries during the 1990s. I was puzzled to find only one translation on the original Wikipedia page. So I wanted to add to it and found some more listed on the second item above. It seems like, the English Wikipedia is more granular, as it has a seperate page for the "original series" part of the games franchise, whereas other languages just list them all on a single page.--Kebap (talk) 17:28, 11 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Actually I cannot really see much of a difference here. It apperas the only reason that there are two concepts is that the Polish wikipedia has two articles about it. I do not speak Polish, but grasping from the automated deepl translations I figured that these Polish articles neither have a clear distinction. The only clue I have is that the Polish entry for defensive tower says that the difference of the defensive tower (wieża obronna) to the fortified tower (baszta) is "that it is integrally connected with the defensive circuit and serves its defense." But the pictures do not really support this difference. Maybe someone from Poland can determine whether this really is a different concept, or could be merged. --H005 (talk) 15:54, 13 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

One entry refers to a process (Q1/17 links), the other to the matter (Q2/55 links) created from the process. While the distinction (and the choice for either) is valid and justifiable, as a result readers from wikis using Q2 won't find the interwikilinks referring to Q1. This examplifies the dilemma that emerges when wiki projects describe some matter which is the result of a process: The choice for either will be arbitrary. --Drahkrub (talk) 10:23, 15 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

In English, a dyad is a set of two notes or pitches that, in particular contexts, may imply a chord (except you say chord starting at three simultaneous pitches, not just two). In French, you say intervalle for that. I wanted to link both, because both articles exist, but the french article intervalle is already linked to the english article interval, which describes the difference in pitch between two sounds, so kind of the same but not really, since a dyad are simultaneous pitches, and an interval (English) is two pitches (wether simultaneous or not). So a dyad is specific interval in English, but you say intervalle for both in French. Except that the french article describes more a dyad than an interval, in my opinion.

--Litdayss (talk) 15:34, 15 August 2020 (UTC) Due to imprecise translation between language and redirects that are not 100% correct, there is now a bit of an issue with the 'Languages' linking between several pages, and linking to pages that really need not exist.[reply]

The Norwegian 'døgn' normally translates to Dutch as 'etmaal' (and German as 'Etmal'). To English it would translate as nychthemeron.

Apparently the term nychthemeron is also used in medical professions, and therefore the English nychthemeron page links to pages on Dutch and German wikipedia as nychthemeron.

At the same time 'etmaal' redirects to the Dutch page for 'day' ('dag'), where it is explained that an 'etmaal' is a 24-hour period, which could be the same as a day, but need not be a day. Because of this redirect, the Norwegian 'døgn' page cannot language-link to the Dutch 'etmaal'. At the same time it could not link to the German Etmal, because Etmal was linked from 'a day's run' (if I remember correctly - which is really an odd link to begin with).

I started trying to fix these things, I unlinked the German page to link it to døgn (NO bokmal) and nychthemeron (EN), but I cannot link the Dutch because etmaal redirects to 'dag', and 'dag' is obviously already linked where it should be ('day').

My ideas for potential solutions: The Dutch 'nychthemeron' is a stub. Either we also redirect that to 'dag' as well, or (more precise and preferred) we make a page for 'etmaal' (the common word used for a 24-hour period), and redirect nychthemeron there to add the medical translation.

There are two terms in Wikidata for canvas, as listed above. Here is some additional info - 1. Q12321255 is defined as a sub-class of Q4259259, while Q12321255 also has a statement for "said to be the same as (P460)" assigned to that term (Q4259259).

2. The photo shown in the English Wikipedia article (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canvas) associated with Q4259259 does not match the "image (P18)" statement for this Wikidata term. However, the photo in the said Wikipedia article matches the image for the other term (Q12321255). Note that Q12321255 does not have an English Wikipedia article associated.

I can see a reason to separate between the material and its use as a painting surface, although it isn't currently defined properly via these terms: a) they shouldn't be sub-class of each other, b) they shouldn't be considered to be the same (P460), c) the Wikipedia articles should be verified to be correctly associated with one of these terms, etc.

Please advise if these terms should be merged and the best way to proceed. Also, if these terms shouldn't be merged, which of them should be used when specifying the material used for a painting?

Thank you! --Sartle az (talk) 02:48, 19 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

They can't be merged, because dewiki, and possibly others, have pages linking to both. And those pages clearly discuss two related but different concepts: a material, and a product commonly made using that material. I realise this isn't quite as obvious in English, but when a painter tells you to "grab me a canvas from the store", you'd probably understand him, even though the request wouldn't make sense for a material that doesn't have a natural unit that could be referred to with "a".
The relation is identical to to glass (Q11469) and drinking glass (Q56369598), both of which are commonly referred to as just "glass".
There is probably a fair amount of confusion in the sitelinks and some statement, as well as the images you mention. The relation also shouldn't be one of subclass/parent class, but rather material used, or similar. Those would need to be cleaned up individually. --Matthias Winkelmann (talk) 23:09, 19 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The term "Cro-Magnon Man" can either be in reference to all Stone Age people in Europe, or just the 4 skeletons from the Cro-Magnon rock shelter. Because this is confusing, the English Wikipedia called the former topic "European early modern humans". The correct links for this topic are under Q179234 (which is attached to 0 English Wikipedia articles), and only 3 of the links are listed on Q24300417 which is currently attached to "European early modern humans" Dunkleosteus77 (talk) 16:05, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The English page for the Hussite Wars has no link to the Swedish page. The Hussite War is incorporated within the Swedish page (Husiter) for the Hussites. -- Just stumbled upon this inconsistency going from English article on "water heating" to Russian version. The problem, as it seems, that English article covers both water heating boilers and space heating by means of water, e.g. centralised heating, while Russian has two distinct pages(Водонагреватель for water, Водяное отопление for space heating). I tried connecting the articles "Stoptrein" from the Dutch Wikipedia & "Train omnibus" from the French Wikipedia because I personally think they're talking about the same concept but the French article seems to be linked to a German, Norwegian and Swedish page about "local" trains, while the Dutch page is linked to a bunch of other wikis, which seem to be talking about "regional" trains. Even though the Dutch page is in the "regional train" set, the first sentence of the page literally states "lokale trein" (= local train). The question here is what we should do with these 2 Wikidata items? Should they be merged? Probably not because the German, Norwegian and Swedish wikis have 2 separate pages already. The difference (if there is one) between regional & local trains should be explained first before this matter can be resolved. --MrLeopold (talk) 18:44, 14 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Polish Wikipedia article pl:plik obiektowy is linked in object code (Q157965), but it would be more fitting in object file (Q14902318). In turn, pl:kod wynikowy linked in Q11740769 is very similar to object code (Q157965). There might be some subtle differences and nuances and I lack the expertise to make the judgement call. In particular I'm not sure if "kod wynikowy" is the same as "kod obiektowy" or if the former is a more general concept. Please take a look at it. Tengwar (talk) 16:39, 20 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

On the German Wikipedia it's called RGT rule, where RGT is some german-specific abbreviation, and in English it's known as Q10. Both describe a change of 10 degrees metric (though one calls it Kelvin, the other Celcius) causing a 2-3x increase in reaction speed and use the same formula (though slightly different formatting). It seems like parallel work but the exact same thing, and I can't link the english to the german page because they're different wikidata items. The en link currently points to Galatheidae, which is only a subgroup of "Squat lobster", so the link should consequently point to "Squat lobster". The problem probably comes from the fact that in the de wiki, an autolink of Galatheidae was set to Jumpcrabs because de Galatheidae was empty. In the en Wiki, you can find both (Squat lobster + Galatheidae), in the de Wiki only the crayfish, but no Galatheidae. It is even more complicated because in en Squat lobster there is no link to the wiki, and if I want to link to the crayfish there, I can't, because en Galatheidae already points there. By the way, a merge would not make sense... it would be like merging "Car" and "Volkswagen". (Autotranslated by deepl)

I cannot link Commons:Category:Charles Frémine at Charles Frémine (Q2959138)--Havang(nl) (talk) 10:16, 20 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I know, an article and a category are two distinct concepts and aren’t ment to be merged. The statement "category's main topic" (in the Category-based item) and the statement "Commons category" (in the article-based item) make the link between them. (and if I’m wrong, then there are probably millions of items that should be merged!) 2A02:2788:22A:100D:4169:D178:FCCC:5DDD 21:07, 20 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

This item is mostly about balls (as used in ball games, what we Spaniards call pelota) but it also includes billiard balls (very hard, very rigid balls, we call them bolas).

Some languages like English use the same term for both concepts, so images of billiard balls appear in ball (Q18545) and in the English Wikipedia, and objects like billiard ball (Q862747) and golf ball (Q919777) are wrongly categorized as pelotas.

I don't really know how many extra items are needed to catalogue these new divisions (do “game ball” and “rigid hard ball” merit a page?) so I'd appreciate some guidance in that matter, too. --ArenaL5 (talk) 13:16, 2 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Also, please remember to change the Wikidata IDs in the section title next time.
I found one item with the name “Zakho technical institute” (Q97352593), no items with the exact name “Duhok university”, and three items about a university in Duhok (Q18162019/Q3666468/Q20181523). Its my first time proposing an edit like this, so I don't know the convention. Regardless, my discussion is based on the language links of the items in question.
In Q11415564 the dutch "eredoctoraat" is linked as an alternative language and the german "Ehrendoktor". In Q209896 the German "Ehrendoktor" links to the English "honorary degree". The dutch "eredoctoraat" and the english "honorary degree" do not link to each other. As far as the dutch language is concerned, these two words (the Dutch and English versions) are literal translations of one another.
No Dutch person ever uses "honoris causa", although it may have been the olden way of saying "eredoctoraat". Hope you don't mind me maybe not responoding again as I'll lose track of this comment. I'll try to find it again!31.21.71.229 23:14, 9 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The problem is with the links in the Latvian and English Wikipedias. The Latvian, Russian and Estonian Wikipedia articles Pētersala-Andrejsala and should be transferred from Q4360264 to Q16866868; whereas Q4360264 could be supplemented with a link to "Andrejsala" in the Latvian Wikipedia (even though it currently results in a redirect).

P.S. would a merge, which could be due, on the English Wikipedia solve this issue? --Ivario (talk) 11:14, 9 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'm new here (Apologies! :).

There is a book, it had an item already: Q98686638 The book has a Spanish translation. I created a new item for the translation: Q104245408

What is an alternative solution to avoid creating a 2nd item for the translation? Can I just add ISBN, etc. of the translation to the original item?

Thanks for any help! --Ricocotamo (talk) 14:55, 18 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Some of the interwiki links of Dirichlet function (Q948386), at least EN and FR, point to articles about nowhere continuous functions in general, of which the Dirichlet function is an example. I couldn't find an item for such functions, only for a paper about them. --Sense Amid Madness, Wit Amidst Folly (talk) 06:59, 19 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The Wikipedia page for the name "Ilya" doesn't have a link to the Russian Wikipedia article for this name, because the wikidata item for it was created much later. The original Wikidata item says its a "first name or given name", are those not the same thing? These two items should be merged and the description should be changed to "male given name". --Akeosnhaoe (talk) 21:16, 21 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

At least for the Russian wikipedia, this is not the case, they are about the same name. If you click on all the people mentioned in the Russian article, then go to the English version of that article, all of them have the name Marcellus. Akeosnhaoe (talk) 02:40, 31 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
