Welcome to Wikidata, The chemistds!

Wikidata is a free knowledge base that you can edit! It can be read and edited by humans and machines alike and you can go to any item page now and add to this ever-growing database!

Need some help getting started? Here are some pages you can familiarize yourself with:

  • Introduction – An introduction to the project.
  • Wikidata tours – Interactive tutorials to show you how Wikidata works.
  • Community portal – The portal for community members.
  • User options – including the 'Babel' extension, to set your language preferences.
  • Contents – The main help page for editing and using the site.
  • Project chat – Discussions about the project.
  • Tools – A collection of user-developed tools to allow for easier completion of some tasks.

Please remember to sign your messages on talk pages by typing four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically insert your username and the date.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask on Project chat. If you want to try out editing, you can use the sandbox to try. Once again, welcome, and I hope you quickly feel comfortable here, and become an active editor for Wikidata.

Best regards! --Tobias1984 (talk) 17:29, 4 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

Babel edit

Babel lets you view and edit more than one language on Wikidata. Just add e.g. {{#babel:de-N|en-3|es-1|fr-2|nl-3|it-4|da-0}} to your user page. With the same language codes you can add links to your userpage on Wikipedia e.g. de:User:User123. --Tobias1984 (talk) 17:29, 4 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

Linking edit

In order to link to a page use:

  • [[:en:|Royal Society of Chemistry]]
  • {{Q|Q905549}} or {{Q|905549}}

The same also works for properties Property:P31 or instance of (P31). --Tobias1984 (talk) 14:29, 10 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

Chemspider edit

Hello, is there any plan from Chemspider to include Q numbers or Wikidata identifiers in their list of identifiers ? Snipre (talk) 08:39, 30 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

It is something that we would like to do - if you can supply a mapping of Q numbers to InChIs that would allow us to see if we can do this. Ideally, it would be better if the data used the non-standard InChI field that occurs in many Wikipedia chem/drugboxes these InChIs make use of the reconnected layer which ensures that structures like phenylmagnesium bromide are encoded as covalently bonded and not as ions cf CSID 10254417 and CSID 13861109.
With an eye to how we (and the rest of the world) understand the relationship between a ChemSpider record and manage/correct these relationships - there is a need for a chemical registration system - has there been any progress on this? I don't see much regarding this on the m: Wikidata:WikiProject Chemistry/ChemID pages. An example problem I can see is trying to answer the question does Q170545 represent stereo-undefined/rac-Phenylalanine CSID 969 or L-phenylalanine CSID 5910. Do you have any thoughts on this? We would be happy to have a discussion with you about this. --The chemistds (talk) 12:58, 30 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
Using PubChem as source for the InChIs, I can provide a list of 3345 chemicals with Q number (see Wikidata:WikiProject_Chemistry/ChemID#Analysis 27.3.2015). I don't know if using InChIs from WP is a good idea: currently there is no guarantee that all identifiers from a WP article are common to the same chemical (and I don't speak about article which mix racemics). The only good solution is to use a reference database and to map chemicals from WD in order to extract sets of commons IDs like SMILE, InChI and formula.
For the racemic you need a policy on WD. But it is clear that we need 3 different items for L-phenylalanine, D-phenylalanine and DL-phenylalanine compounds. And even for each isotopic molecule like heavy water. But for that we need a simple ontology to organize items and to link them in order to avoid duplicates. Tool of the week

  • Wikidata periodic table - Tool by User:Ricordisamoa, to browse all chemical elements available on Wikidata, with atomic number, chemical symbol, and localized label. It also includes two charts of the nuclides, with links to every isotope in Wikidata, colored by half-life or decay mode.

Other Noteworthy Stuff

  • A new UI mode is available for the online validator for EntitySchemas. It represents validation reports as a table rather than a very long string, and replaces most links with hyperlinks with some of the text behind them; making them easier to read. Currently being tested at https://shex-validator.toolforge.org/packages/shex-webapp/doc/shex-simple-improved.html, we are looking for participants to evaluate this tool. Some experience with editing Wikidata is appreciated, but no experience working with Schemas is required. If you are interested, you can sign up here. We hope to begin interviews around May 13.
